Dispersal And Establishment Both Limit Colonization During Primary Succession On A Glacier Foreland, Chad C. Jones, Roger Del Moral Jan 2009

Dispersal And Establishment Both Limit Colonization During Primary Succession On A Glacier Foreland, Chad C. Jones, Roger Del Moral

Botany Faculty Publications

Plant colonization can be limited by lack of seeds or by factors that reduce establishment. The role of seed limitation in community assembly is being increasingly recognized, but in early primary succession, establishment failure is still considered more important. We studied the factors limiting colonization on the foreland of Coleman Glacier, Washington, USA to determine the importance of seed and establishment limitation during primary succession. We also evaluated the effects of seed predation, drought and existing vegetation on establishment. We planted seeds of seven species into plots of four different ages and found evidence that both seed and establishment limitation …

Two Ways To Think About The Punishment Of Corporations, Albert Alschuler Jan 2009

Two Ways To Think About The Punishment Of Corporations, Albert Alschuler

Faculty Working Papers

This article compares the criminal punishment of corporations in the twenty-first century with two ancient legal practices—deodand (the punishment of animals and objects that have produced harm) and frankpledge (the punishment of all members of a group when one member of the group has avoided apprehension for a crime). It argues that corporate criminal punishment is a mistake but that viewing it as frankpledge is less ridiculous than viewing it as deodand. The article considers the implications of the choice between these concepts for standards of corporate guilt and for the sentencing of corporate offenders. After a brief historical description …

Valuing Foreign Lives And Civilizations In Cost-Benefit Analysis: The Case Of The United States And Climate Change Policy, David A. Dana Jan 2009

Valuing Foreign Lives And Civilizations In Cost-Benefit Analysis: The Case Of The United States And Climate Change Policy, David A. Dana

Faculty Working Papers

This Article explores the case for including losses of foreign (non-U.S.) lives and settlements in the estimated cost to the United States of unmitigated climate change in the future. The inclusion of losses of such foreign lives and settlements in cost benefit analysis (CBA) could have large implications not only for U.S. climate change policy but also for policies adopted by other nations and the practice of CBA generally. One difficult problem is how to assess U.S. residents' willingness to pay to prevent the losses of foreign lives and settlements. This Article discusses internet-based surveys that are a first step …

Selection Neglect In Mutual Fund Advertisements, Jonathan Koehler, Molly Mercer Jan 2009

Selection Neglect In Mutual Fund Advertisements, Jonathan Koehler, Molly Mercer

Faculty Working Papers

Mutual fund companies selectively advertise their better-performing funds. However, investors respond to advertised performance data as if those data were unselected (i.e., representative of the population). We identify the failure to discount selected or potentially selected data as selection neglect. We examine these phenomena in an archival study (Study 1) and two controlled experiments (Studies 2 and 3). Study 1 identifies selection bias in mutual fund advertising by showing that the median performance rank for advertised funds is between the 79th and 100th percentile. Study 2 finds that both novice investors and financial professionals fall victim to selection neglect in …

Swordfish Vertical Distribution And Recreational Fishery In The Florida Straits, Justin D. Lerner Jan 2009

Swordfish Vertical Distribution And Recreational Fishery In The Florida Straits, Justin D. Lerner

Open Access Theses

This thesis is composed of two studies: (1) an assessment of the vertical habitat use of swordfish Xiphias gladius in the Florida Straits; and (2) a systematic description of the southeast Florida recreational swordfish fishery. First, the vertical distribution of swordfish (Xiphias gladius) was assessed in relation to diel cycles and lunar phase from data gathered utilizing popup satellite archival tags (PSATs). Seven tags were deployed in the Florida Straits during this study from recreational and commercial fishing vessels; two fish died shortly after deployment, and the remaining five were included in the analysis. Tags were deployed for periods ranging …

The Effects Of Fruit And Vegetable Extracts On Surrogate Endpoint Biomarkers In Curatively Treated Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients, Daniel Munoz Jan 2009

The Effects Of Fruit And Vegetable Extracts On Surrogate Endpoint Biomarkers In Curatively Treated Head And Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients, Daniel Munoz

Open Access Theses

Dietary factors have been implicated in the risk of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Much interest has been placed upon the effects of suspected chemopreventative agents found in fruit and vegetables associated with low HNSCC risk. However, studies investigating specific uptake of these agents have failed to show positive results. The possibility exists that single chemopreventative agents fail to provide the same beneficial effect as the various compounds found in a fruits and vegetables is examined. Curatively treated head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients ingested Juice Plus, a F&V extract supplement containing multiple chemopreventative agents, for 12 …

Culturally Identifying The Performance Practices Of Astor Piazzolla's Second Quinteto, Kacey Quin Link

Open Access Theses

Astor Piazzolla (1921-1992) captivated Argentine and international audiences with his innovative works in a nuevo tango style and his bandoneón performances. Piazzolla?s success culminated during the 1980s with his second Quinteto, which performed remarkable concerts in venues such as the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires and the Central Park Bandshell in New York, in addition to the performances at the Montreal and Montreux Jazz Festivals. His music also grew popular with a plethora of internationally acclaimed classical and jazz artists as well as with Argentine musicians themselves. However, Piazzolla?s music poses a challenge today, because nuevo tango represents a synthesis …

Aesthetic Practices In My Live Electronic Music, Adam Sheppard Jan 2009

Aesthetic Practices In My Live Electronic Music, Adam Sheppard

Open Access Theses

Live music has the ability to unite individuals and affect them on both cognitive and emotional levels. Its time-honored tradition remains the true test of a musical work?s strength and longevity. Electronic music in particular has had some difficulty in establishing well-formed performance practices in its relatively short life span. The problem may not be one of sonic, but rather visual inhibition and general discontinuities between the audience and performers. In this paper I raise three questions of aesthetic value concerning live performance. Why do we go to live musical performances? How do we perceive sound? How do we correlate …

The Hom-School, Malik Benjamin Jan 2009

The Hom-School, Malik Benjamin

Open Access Theses

During the second half of the 20th century, there was an epic deterioration of the urban fabric of the typical American neighborhood. Starting with the fleeing of city dwellers into the outskirts of suburbia in the 1950s and the exodus of commercial institutions in the 1970s, neighborhood sprawl hit its stride with the elimination of the neighborhood school in the 1980s. With this community-defining component being replaced by giant, remote educational facilities, the American neighborhood was finally a shell of its former self. If the neighborhood represents the cell, then the home represents the nucleus. In 2003, 1.1 million children …

After The Towers Fell: Musical Responses To 9/11, Andrew Robertson Claassen Jan 2009

After The Towers Fell: Musical Responses To 9/11, Andrew Robertson Claassen

Open Access Theses

The tragic and devastating September 11 attacks resulted in a variety of original musical responses. Exemplary works expressed their reactions through overt 9/11-concentric dialogues to express themes of mourning, military retribution, dissent and commemoration. An examination of such works concludes that effective musical responses express a direct message clarified by supporting musical and/or textual materials. Musical materials can accentuate the specific thematic message of the responsive work as they often evoke images and emotions reminiscent of the attacks and their aftermath. Compositional techniques used in these works are often reminiscent of historical works written in similar circumstances. The recurrence of …

Use Of Gallery And Non-Gallery Forest By Ungulates Inhabiting The Loma Mountains Non-Hunting Forest Reserve, Sierra Leone, West Africa, Aaron Peter Kortenhoven Jan 2009

Use Of Gallery And Non-Gallery Forest By Ungulates Inhabiting The Loma Mountains Non-Hunting Forest Reserve, Sierra Leone, West Africa, Aaron Peter Kortenhoven

Open Access Theses

This 11-month study examined rates of encountering dung pellet groups, dung piles and ungulates in gallery forests and non-gallery forests during diurnal surveys in the Loma Mountains Non-Hunting Forest Reserve (LMNHFR) in Sierra Leone, West Africa. These indices of relative abundance were then used to infer relative habitat use by the seven ungulate species on which data were collected. This study also examined the differences in rates of encountering duikers during nocturnal surveys with rates of encountering duikers during diurnal surveys to determine which time of day produces higher rates of encounter, and thereby a more accurate estimate of duiker …

Articular cartilage lines the surfaces of load bearing joints and has limited capabilities for self-repair due to its alymphatic and avascular structure. Attempts at making repairs to this tissue has resulted in substandard materials and/or causing further injury to the patient making this tissue a prime candidate for tissue engineering studies incorporating adult stem cells. These studies have given rise to some answers and many more questions including a search for alternative stem cell sources and what biochemical changes the cells undergo during the differentiation of these stem cells into chondrocytes, the cells which make up articular cartilage. Recently, periodontal …

The Salta Trilogy Of Lucrecia Martel, Oscar Jubis Jan 2009

The Salta Trilogy Of Lucrecia Martel, Oscar Jubis

Open Access Theses

During the past decade, Lucrecia Martel has emerged as the most respected filmmaker from South America. This thesis is motivated by my conviction that Martel's films are worthy of serious engagement and critical scrutiny. It is also motivated by my curiosity about the seemingly inexhaustible pleasure and edification I derive from them. Martel describes her filmmaking as "cine de autor" (auteur cinema). Indeed, her films evidence a personal involvement in every aspect of filmmaking. This thesis will define and explore the characteristics and conditions of her authorship. This thesis constitutes an expression of the enduring usefulness of auteurist criticism. In …
