This film's technical aspects focus on texturing, lighting and compositing to represent an illustration-style animation. The following …

Past With Present: A Design Process, Spencer Knape Biegler Mar 2009

Past With Present: A Design Process, Spencer Knape Biegler

Theses

The design process detailed in this thesis addresses how a designer brings a design that is both relevant but dated into the present. Four stages make up the design process: investigation, scattered design, design réseau, and focused design, and the process covers the choice of artifact, historical and cultural research, and the conclusions derived from research. The chandelier acts as artifact in this design process iteration. The goal of the thesis project is a process that stresses both innovation as well as the cultural and symbolic importance of older designs; the outcome of this design iteration is honed chandelier concepts …

Restoring Rluipas Equal Terms Provision, Sarah Keeton Campbell Mar 2009

Restoring Rluipas Equal Terms Provision, Sarah Keeton Campbell

Duke Law Journal

The Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act's (RLUIPA) equal terms provision prohibits government from implementing a land-use regulation in a manner that treats religious assemblies and institutions less favorably than secular assemblies and institutions. Lower courts have only begun to interpret and apply RLUIPA's equal terms provision, but already they have significantly weakened its protections of religious liberty by giving the provision unnecessarily restrictive interpretations. Not surprisingly, in light of the Supreme Court's invalidation of the Religious Freedom Restoration Act of 1993 (RFRA), the lower courts' restrictive readings seen? driven by concerns that a broader interpretation would exceed Congress's …

Abandonment And Reconciliation: Addressing Political And Common Law Objections To Fetal Homicide Laws, Douglas S. Curran Mar 2009

Abandonment And Reconciliation: Addressing Political And Common Law Objections To Fetal Homicide Laws, Douglas S. Curran

Duke Law Journal

Fetal homicide laws criminalize killing a fetus largely to the same extent as killing any other human being. Historically, the common law did not generally recognize feticide as a crime, but this was because of the evidentiary "born-alive" rule, not because of the substantive understanding of the term "human being." As medicine and science have advanced, states have become increasingly willing to abandon this evidentiary rule and to criminalize feticide as homicide. Although most states have recognized the crime of fetal homicide, fourteen have not. This is largely the result of two independent obstacles: (judicial) adherence to the born-alive rule …

Study Design. An experimental study investigating osteoclastic activity induced by rhBMP-2 in sheep.

Objective. To examine the effects of increasing local rhBMP-2 concentration on osteoclastic response and peri-implant bone resorption.

Summary of Background Data. Level I clinical studies have established the safe and effective volume and concentration of rhBMP-2 delivered on an absorbable collagen sponge. However, peri-implant bone resorption appearing as decreased mineral density has been observed radiographically in rare instances after implantation of rhBMP-2 on an absorbable collagen sponge (rhBMP-2/ACS).

Methods. Bilateral corticocancellous defects were created in the distal femora of 30 adult sheep. Combinations of rhBMP-2/ACS implant volume …

"Mad Laughter" In Federman's The Twofold Vibration, Menachem Feuer Mar 2009

"Mad Laughter" In Federman's The Twofold Vibration, Menachem Feuer

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In his article "'Mad Laughter' in Federman's The Twofold Vibration" Menachem Feuer discusses one of the central questions in the debate over post-Holocaust representation with regard to comedy and laughter. Several authors and filmmakers including Mel Brooks, Lina Wertmüller, Roberto Benigni, Michael Chabon, or Jonathan Safran Foer employ comedy in work. Although the books and films of these authors and filmmakers certainly test the limits of representation through the use of comedy in post-Holocaust art, the use of "mad laughter" in the work of Raymond Federman to represent the Holocaust stands out as the most important exploration of post-Holocaust comedy …

From Cells To Coastlines: How Can We Use Physiology To Forecast The Impacts Of Climate Change?, Brian Helmuth Mar 2009

From Cells To Coastlines: How Can We Use Physiology To Forecast The Impacts Of Climate Change?, Brian Helmuth

Faculty Publications

The interdisciplinary fields of conservation physiology, macrophysiology, and mechanistic ecological forecasting have recently emerged as means of integrating detailed physiological responses to the broader questions of ecological and evolutionary responses to global climate change. Bridging the gap between large-scale records of weather and climate (as measured by remote sensing platforms, buoys and ground-based weather stations) and the physical world as experienced by organisms (niche-level measurements) requires a mechanistic understanding of how ‘environmental signals’ (parameters such as air, surface and water temperature, food availability, water flow) are translated into signals at the scale of the organism or cell (e.g. body temperature, …

Network Security Using Self Organized Multi-Agent Swarms, Eric M. Holloway, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson Mar 2009

Network Security Using Self Organized Multi-Agent Swarms, Eric M. Holloway, Gary B. Lamont, Gilbert L. Peterson

Faculty Publications

Computer network cyber-security is a very serious concern in many commercial, industrial, and military environments. This paper proposes a new computer network security approach defined by self organized agent swarms (SOMAS) which provides a novel computer network security management framework based upon desired overall system behaviors. The SOMAS structure evolves based upon the partially observable Markov decision process (POMDP) formal model and the more complex interactive-POMDP and decentralized-POMDP models. Example swarm specific and network based behaviors are formalized and simulated. This paper illustrates through various statistical testing techniques, the significance of this proposed SOMAS architecture.

District Of Columbia V. Heller And Originalism, Lawrence B. Solum Mar 2009

District Of Columbia V. Heller And Originalism, Lawrence B. Solum

Faculty Scholarship

On June 26, 2008, the United States Supreme Court handed down its 5-4 decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, striking a District of Columbia statute that prohibits the possession of useable handguns in the home on the ground that it violated the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. Justice Scalia's majority opinion drew dissents from Justice Stevens and Justice Breyer. Collectively, the opinions in Heller represent the most important and extensive debate on the role of original meaning in constitutional interpretation among the members of the contemporary Supreme Court.

This Article investigates the relationship between originalist constitutional theory …

Role Of No In The Regulation Of Cortisol Synthesis In Long-Term Hypoxic Sheep Fetal Adrenal, Tshepo Rothi Monau Mar 2009

Role Of No In The Regulation Of Cortisol Synthesis In Long-Term Hypoxic Sheep Fetal Adrenal, Tshepo Rothi Monau

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Our laboratory has demonstrated that sheep fetuses adapt to long-term hypoxia (LTH) by maintaining normal level of basal plasma cortisol despite increased adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH). But the mechanisms involved are not fully understood. Studies have shown that nitric oxide (NO) inhibits synthesis of steroid hormones in a variety of tissues, and in different animal species. Studies also showed that hypoxia increases both expression and activity levels of the nitric oxide (NO) generating enzyme, nitric oxide synthase (NOS), in certain tissues. We have here investigated the expression level and localization of NOS isoforms in sheep fetal adrenals. We also investigated the …

How The Diversity Rationale Lays The Groundwork For New Discrimination: Examining The Trajectory Of Equal Protection Doctrine, Michael A. Helfand Mar 2009

How The Diversity Rationale Lays The Groundwork For New Discrimination: Examining The Trajectory Of Equal Protection Doctrine, Michael A. Helfand

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

This Article advocates differentiating between two distinct categories of equal protection cases. The first-what I have termed indicator cases-are instances where courts consider whether there are sufficient factual indications to demonstrate the existence of aprimafacie equal protection violation. The second-violation casesare instances where courts consider, having already determined the existence of an equal protection violation, whether there is a good enough justification for a prima facie equal protection violation. Unfortunately, the Supreme Court has not differentiated between these two different types of cases. This has led to a string of decisions where the Supreme Court has erroneously looked for justifications …

Increasing Your Calf Crop By Management, Pregnancy Testing, And Breeding Soundness Examination Of Bulls, George Perry, Russ Daly, Tyler Melroe Mar 2009

Increasing Your Calf Crop By Management, Pregnancy Testing, And Breeding Soundness Examination Of Bulls, George Perry, Russ Daly, Tyler Melroe

SDSU Extension Extra Archives

Percent calf crop weaned is influenced more by man¬agement decisions than by any other single factor in a cow herd, and therefore can be a very important factor in annual returns for a cow-calf operation. Percent calf crop weaned is calculated by dividing the number of calves weaned by the total number of females exposed during the breeding season. As shown in Table 1, as percent calf crop weaned increases, pounds of calf weaned per cow exposed increas¬es and production cost per hundred pounds of calf produced decreases. Increasing weaning weights approximately 50 pounds is equal to an increase of …
