Using Patents To Protect Traditional Knowledge, Jay Erstling Mar 2009

Using Patents To Protect Traditional Knowledge, Jay Erstling

Texas Wesleyan Law Review

The role that intellectual property can play in the protection of traditional knowledge (TK) has been on the international agenda for more than ten years, with little to show for it. For example, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has provided a forum for international policy debate on the subject since 1998, and the WIPO Intergovernmental Committee on Intellectual Property and Genetic Resources, Traditional Knowledge and Folklore (IGC) has held meetings on draft provisions for the protection of TK against misappropriation and misuse since 2001. Similarly, since 1999 the World Trade Organization (WTO) has been examining the most effective means …

Sphingosine-1-Phosphate/Sphingosine-1-Phosphate Receptor 2 Signaling Induces Cox-2 Expression In Wilms Tumor, Mei-Hong Li, Teresa Sanchez, Timothy Hla, Fernando Ferrer

UCHC Articles - Research

Purpose

Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) has been reported to be ubiquitously expressed in Wilms tumor, the most common malignant renal tumor in children. However, the regulation mechanism of COX-2 expression remains unexplored.

Materials and Methods

Quantitative real-time PCR and western blot analysis were performed to detect COX-2 mRNA and protein expression in WiT49 cells upon the stimulation by sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) as well as S1P2 and COX-2 mRNA expression in 10 fresh frozen Wilms tumor tissues and their matched normal tissues. Overexpression, blockade and downregulation of S1P2 were performed using adenoviral transduction, S1P2 antagonist JTE-013 and siRNA transfection, respectively. The …

Retention Of Polarization Signatures In Shg Microscopy Of Scattering Tissues Through Optical Clearing, Oleg Nadiarnykh, Paul J. Campagnola

UCHC Articles - Research

Polarization responses in Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) imaging microscopy are a valuable method to quantify aspects of tissue structure, and may be a means to differentiate normal and diseased tissues. Due to multiple scattering, the polarization data is lost in turbid tissues. Here we investigate if this information can be retained through the use of optical clearing which greatly reduces the scattering coefficient and increases the corresponding mean free path. To this end, we have measured the SHG intensity as a function of laser polarization and the SHG signal anisotropy in murine tendon and striated muscle over a depth range …

USAID Mali Mission Awards

Introduction

This report details the recent progress achieved under the Cooperative Agreement # 688-A- 00-007-00043-00. The report covers progress in the Production-Marketing, Food Processing and Décrue Sorghum components from January1 to March 31, 2009.

The noted scientist Carl Sagan has stated that “Advances in medicine and agriculture have saved vastly more lives than have been lost in all the wars in history (see box below). This project promotes advances in agriculture by moving sorghum and millet production technologies onto farmers’ fields, linking farmers’ organizations to food and feed processors and by commercializing processing technologies so as to enhance markets. Youth Media Democracy: Perceptions Of New Literacies, Jan Pettersen

Reports

The conference ‘Youth Media Democracy’ was a two day event held in April of 2008. It set out to explore the effects that new media have on the younger generation with a focus on the tremendous opportunities that new media brings. The event had the ambitious aim to offer an integrated experience of a traditional academic conference, presenting recent research on topics like; new media; emerging literacies; the digital divide; new media as a platform for democracy in the lives of young people, and at the same time also engaging the participation of Youth through a series of workshops across …

Itsembabwoko ‘À La Française’? Rwanda, Fiction And The Franco-African Imaginary, Madelaine Hron Mar 2009

Itsembabwoko ‘À La Française’? Rwanda, Fiction And The Franco-African Imaginary, Madelaine Hron

English and Film Studies Faculty Publications

This article explores the literary representation of the genocide in Rwanda, and by extension, that of the Franco-African imaginary. Since the horrific events in 1994, “Rwanda” has become a discursive epiphenomenon, be it in global human rights, African or francophone contexts. Literary works about itsembabwoko, mostly published in France, now represent both a varied and a substantial corpus in Francophone literature. Problematically, however, France played a critical, if not insidious, role in the 1994 Tutsi genocide. This paper therefore examines to what extent Francophone literature about Rwanda is shaped by French politics. Specifically, it contrasts Franco-African texts produced as part …

Acetaminophen Prevents Aging-Associated Hyperglycemia In Aged Rats: Effect Of Aging-Associated Hyperactivation Of P38-Mapk And Erk1/2, Miaozong Wu, Devashish H. Desai, Sunil K. Kakarla, Anjaiah Katta, Satyanarayana Paturi, Anil K. Gutta, Kevin M. Rice, Ernest M. Walker Jr., Eric R. Blough Mar 2009

Acetaminophen Prevents Aging-Associated Hyperglycemia In Aged Rats: Effect Of Aging-Associated Hyperactivation Of P38-Mapk And Erk1/2, Miaozong Wu, Devashish H. Desai, Sunil K. Kakarla, Anjaiah Katta, Satyanarayana Paturi, Anil K. Gutta, Kevin M. Rice, Ernest M. Walker Jr., Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

Background

Aging-related hyperglycemia is associated with increased oxidative stress and diminished muscle glucose transporter-4 (Glut4) that may be regulated, at least in part, by the mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPK).

Methods

To test the possibility that aging-related hyperglycemia can be prevented by pharmacological manipulation of MAPK hyperactivation, aged (27-month old) Fischer 344/NNiaHSD × Brown Norway/BiNia F1 (F344BN) rats were administered acetaminophen (30 mg/kg body weight/day) for 6 months in drinking water.

Results

Hepatic histopathology, serum aspartate aminotransferase and alanine aminotransferase analyses suggested that chronic acetaminophen did not cause hepatotoxicity. Compared with adult (6-month) and aged (27-month) rats, very aged rats (33-month) …

Music As A Mirror: The ‘‘Choosing My Personal Theme Song’’ Exercise, Nathan S. Hartman, Thomas A. Conklin Mar 2009

Music As A Mirror: The ‘‘Choosing My Personal Theme Song’’ Exercise, Nathan S. Hartman, Thomas A. Conklin

Organization Management Journal

When asked to describe their strengths people rarely refer to their natural knowledge, skills, abilities, and talents. From this we may assume that many are unaware of their individual strengths or at the very least take them for granted. Music lyrics are particularly salient symbols available in the minds of students and can be powerful tools for learning more about themselves and others. This knowledge is valuable as they continue in their own personal evolution as they discern greater distinctions between themselves and the world around them. The interactive exercise presented here uses music to help students look in the …

Effect Of Processing Parameters On Texture, Composition And Applicability Of High Protein Dairy Food, Maulik Shah Mar 2009

Effect Of Processing Parameters On Texture, Composition And Applicability Of High Protein Dairy Food, Maulik Shah

Master's Theses

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of key process parameters on the flow properties of a novel High Protein Dairy Food (HPDF). HPDF was manufactured by an approach similar to that of manufacture of Halloumi cheese (a semi hard cheese originally from Cyprus). The effect of pasteurization condition, pH of acidification and homogenization were investigated on flowability, composition and texture of the HPDF. The study consisted of three different stages. After each stage of experimentation, the HPDF was analyzed for compositional, textural (by texture profile analysis) and flow properties during heating by microwave, oven and hot …

Parent And Student Experiences With Choice In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Thomas Stewart, Patrick J. Wolf Mar 2009

Parent And Student Experiences With Choice In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Thomas Stewart, Patrick J. Wolf

School Choice Demonstration Project

Scholars, advocates of various positions, and policymakers have fiercely debated whether the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program (MPCP), also known as the voucher or “Choice” program, has been a godsend or a scourge for the city’s children. Wisconsin policymakers, concerned about that question, identified the School Choice Demonstration Project (SCDP) as the organization to help provide the answers.1 The SCDP is a national research organization, based in the University of Arkansas’s Department of Education Reform, dedicated to the comprehensive, objective, and nonpartisan evaluation of school choice programs. We are drawn together for this project by the opportunity to examine what effects …
