Jing: More Bang For Your Instructional Buck, Maria Brandt, Pete Mcdonnell
Library Technology Conference
Jing is a free, online screen capture and sharing tool that makes it very easy to create and share screen recordings from your desktop. At SMSU Library, we jumped at the chance to use Jing as an addition to librarians' instructional and communication toolbox. In this hands-on, "sandbox" session, participants will get the chance to explore their own ideas for using Jing in their day-to-day work.
Technology Workshops With A Twist: Using Scratch For Youth Technology Workshops, Jennifer Nelson, Keith Braafladt
Technology Workshops With A Twist: Using Scratch For Youth Technology Workshops, Jennifer Nelson, Keith Braafladt
Library Technology Conference
Gaming's all the rage in libraries, but we've taken things a step further in technology programming for teens. We teach teens how to use Scratch to create multi-media content including animation, stories, and even games as a way to teach 21st century literacy skills. Why Scratch? It's free, it's accessible and it's fun. It also connects youth with a worldwide community of users. This workshop will introduce you to the wonders of Scratch and relate our experiences in rolling out the program to a set of national libraries as part of an IMLS funded Nation of Leaders Demonstration Grant.
Reading For Digital Natives, Carol Soma
Reading For Digital Natives, Carol Soma
Library Technology Conference
You can call them Digital Natives or the Net Generation, but you probably won't call them readers. With good reason, educators today are concerned about young people who can't or won't read. This presentation examines recent brain research, shedding light on exciting new methods that can be used for students with dyslexia, other learning disabilities, or even just plain apathy. It will offer ideas to improve your collection, your media program, and possibly your attitude..

The Effect Of Simulated Nodules On Vocal Fold Movement In A Two Layer Synthetic Model, Rachelle Nevitt Rauma
The Effect Of Simulated Nodules On Vocal Fold Movement In A Two Layer Synthetic Model, Rachelle Nevitt Rauma
Theses and Dissertations
This study examined the differences between normal vocal fold vibration and the movement patterns of vocal folds with mass lesions by means of a synthetic model. The experimenter molded and cast three sets of vocal folds, representing normal structure, small nodules, and larger nodules. Acoustic, aerodynamic, and digital video signals were recorded and analyzed in order to quantify air flow and pressure, measure vibratory stability, and visually assess closure patterns across the three structural conditions. Statistical analysis revealed that the presence of vocal nodules resulted in a significantly higher onset pressure, fundamental frequency, airflow at onset, and offset pressure. However, …
Economy Hard On Beef And Pork Demand, Darrell R. Mark
Economy Hard On Beef And Pork Demand, Darrell R. Mark
Cornhusker Economics
The inventory of all cattle and calves reached a 50-year low at the end of 2008. Pork producers reduced the size of the breeding herd late in 2008. Imports of feeder cattle, feeder pigs and slaughter cattle and hogs from Canada have dropped dramatically since the fourth quarter of 2008. And, never before seen drops in broiler production occurred in the last few months of 2008. With production of nearly all sectors of the meat industry lower than year-ago levels, why haven’t livestock prices rallied in response? The economic times we’re in have reduced demand. People haven’t been willing or …

Photoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Bioconjugated Quantum Dots And Their Application For Early Cancer Detection, Ganna Chornokur
Photoluminescence Spectroscopy Of Bioconjugated Quantum Dots And Their Application For Early Cancer Detection, Ganna Chornokur
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Most of the bio-applications of semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) show and utilize their superior optical properties over organic fluorophores. An estimated 3-35% of all cancer deaths could be avoided through early detection, therefore, there is a critical need to develop sensitive probes.
The objectives of this work are:
Research the phenomena of "blue" photoluminescence (PL) spectral shift on the dried bioconjugated QDs and develop the relevant mechanism;
Develop a methodology that will allow successful confirmation of the bioconjugation reaction between biomolecules and QDs;
Propose a modification of an existent method or approach to employ the "blue" spectral shift of bioconjugated …
