A New Model Of 4-H Volunteer Development In Science, Engineering, And Technology Programs, Bradley S. Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent Apr 2009

A New Model Of 4-H Volunteer Development In Science, Engineering, And Technology Programs, Bradley S. Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent

Teacher Education Faculty Publications

New initiatives centered on science, engineering, and technology (SET) in 4-H may be moving away from the long-established adult volunteer delivery model. This shift in delivery may be due to a lack of availability of adult volunteers who possess the necessary SET competencies to effectively lead 4-H clubs. One way to offset this trend may be to blend traditional face-to-face training with continuous training efforts that include asynchronous on-line training modules, synchronous Web-based meetings, and self-directed learning. This new 4-H SET Volunteer Competencies Training Model is being tested in the Nebraska 4-H Robotics and GPS/GIS program.

Enhancing Mathematical Literacy, Jennifer Mullen Apr 2009

Enhancing Mathematical Literacy, Jennifer Mullen

Mathematical and Computing Sciences Masters

Many students struggle on standardized tests simply because they do not have the reading skills or vocabulary knowledge base to understand what a test question is asking them to do. This is particularly true with standardized mathematics testing. This study examines vocabulary instruction and its connection to improving mathematical literacy and improving standardized test performance. A vocabulary strategy was implemented that required students to connect mathematical terms, with common everyday language, formalized mathematical definitions, and mathematical symbols. After being exposed to this new strategy, students were given assessments that tested their knowledge of vocabulary and ability to perform on a …

Water As A Public Good: The Status Of Water Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, Bryant Walker Smith Apr 2009

Water As A Public Good: The Status Of Water Under The General Agreement On Tariffs And Trade, Bryant Walker Smith

Cardozo Journal of International and Comparative Law

The article argues that water is not a "product" under the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) due to the widespread and consistent assertion of public ownership over water resources through municipal and international law, which precludes its treatment as a tradable commodity under GATT. This "public-ownership consensus" implies that water resources remain under state control, and GATT's trade disciplines should not apply to water in its natural state.

Groundwater samples were obtained from two shallow municipal water wells also; one on the Grand River and one on the Kalamazoo River. The wells were sampled to determine if PPCPs in the river water were being drawn in by …

An Exploratory Analysis Of Public Resource Online Auctions, Chunxiang Zhang Apr 2009

An Exploratory Analysis Of Public Resource Online Auctions, Chunxiang Zhang

Dissertations, Theses and Capstone Projects (Full IR Collection)

The purpose of this study is to provide an exploratory analysis of public resources’ allocation through online auctions. Online auctions are new ways of public resource allocation in China, but they are promising because of its broad participation and low transaction costs. In addition, compared to traditional administrative allocation mechanisms, auction methods could resolve the rent-seeking problem. One important point for an online auction is to design a certain set of rules to attract the targeted people to realize the rule-maker’s goal. But why can a certain set of rules affect the participants’ actions? To answer this question, it is …

From the fourth paragraph of the Editor's Introduction:

In this new logic we must formulate new ways of learning about art and its relation to space, which is a primary goal of the Pack Observation collective headed by Walter K. Lew. In this special section-- a prelude to a complete print version to be co-published by Reconstruction, Canal_138, and Autotypograph-- which documents the collectives; "representation" of Art Basel Miami Beach, often characterized as a "bake-sale" of modern art, the P.O. combines art, found material, photography, poetry, and narrative as a means of simultaneously interrogating Art Basel and meditating on …

Invalidity Of Covenants Not To Compete In California Affects Employers Nationwide, Sheri Wardwell Apr 2009

Invalidity Of Covenants Not To Compete In California Affects Employers Nationwide, Sheri Wardwell

Washington Journal of Law, Technology & Arts

In Edwards v. Arthur Andersen LLP, the Supreme Court of California rejected the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals’ “narrow restraint” exception to California Business and Professional Code section 16600 regarding the unenforceability of covenants not to compete (CNCs). Edwards affirms that, unless the agreement falls within a statutory exception, CNCs in employment agreements are invalid as a matter of law in California because of California's strong interest in protecting employee mobility as codified in section 16600. Despite California’s strong public policy against CNCs, an employee who wins the race to a California courthouse may not necessarily benefit from section …

Vietnamese Water Puppet Theatre: A Look Through The Ages, Derek Gaboriault

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Through scenes depicting heroism, courage, perseverance, and others, Vietnamese Water Puppet Theatre serves as a tool for fostering nationalism, creating and solidifying a cultural identity, and serving as a reminder to the Vietnamese of their agrarian past. Water puppetry has endured many setbacks like the Vietnam War for example, however troupes like the Thăng Long Theatre Troupe and Central Puppet Theatre Troupe are able to dually serve to attract tourists and have a strong connection with many of the Vietnamese. Tuồng and Chèo Theatre have coexisted alongside Water Puppet Theatre and has helped reiterate the importance of traditional theatre within …

Brissette, Amy Bowman, Matthew L. Rotondi, M. Clarke Miller, Edward Demoll, Kap Lim, Michael G. Fried, Brian Stevenson

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

The Lyme disease spirochete, Borrelia burgdorferi, encodes a novel type of DNA-binding protein named EbfC. Orthologs of EbfC are encoded by a wide range of bacterial species, so characterization of the borrelial protein has implications that span the eubacterial kingdom. The present work defines the DNA sequence required for high-affinity binding by EbfC to be the 4 bp broken palindrome GTnAC, where ‘n’ can be any nucleotide. Two high-affinity EbfC-binding sites are located immediately 5′ of B. burgdorferi erp transcriptional promoters, and binding of EbfC was found to alter the conformation of erp promoter DNA. Consensus EbfC-binding …

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Simple polyglutamine (polyQ) peptides aggregate in vitro via a nucleated growth pathway directly yielding amyloid-like aggregates. We show here that the 17-amino-acid flanking sequence (HTTNT) N-terminal to the polyQ in the toxic huntingtin exon 1 fragment imparts onto this peptide a complex alternative aggregation mechanism. In isolation, the HTTNT peptide is a compact coil that resists aggregation. When polyQ is fused to this sequence, it induces in HTTNT, in a repeat-length dependent fashion, a more extended conformation that greatly enhances its aggregation into globular oligomers with HTTNT cores and exposed polyQ. In a second …

Linking Mine Action And Development | Official Development Cooperation Agencies, Gichd

Global CWD Repository

Mine action programmes often are not linked early and strongly enough with key development actors. Despite the availability of extensive research documenting the need for greater coordination between mine action and development organisations, concrete guidance for practitioners and policy-makers on how to link mine action with development has been lacking. In response, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Development has published guidelines on how to ensure mine action promotes development in mine-affected countries. More specifically, the guidelines seek to:

  • Increase awareness that landmines and other remnants of conflict block development in many affected countries
  • Strengthen coordination between mine action and …

The Effects Of Salvinorin A On The Novel Object Recognition Task In Male Rats, Larissa A. Haliw

Masters Theses

A recent increase in the recreational use of the plant Salvia divinorum and its derivative salvinorin A, an atypical naturally occurring kappa opioid receptor ag onist with hallucinogenic properties, by teens and young adults has contributed to a growing concern regarding the psychological effects of this drug. Salvia divinorum is presently a legal alternative to illegal hallucinogens and it is widely available over the Internet and in stores for a nominal cost making it a potential candidate as a drug of abuse. To date, no investigations have ex plored the effects of salvinorin A in memory assays. The novel object …
