Medicinal Plants For Snake Bite Treatment - Future Focus, Kuntal Das Apr 2009

Medicinal Plants For Snake Bite Treatment - Future Focus, Kuntal Das

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Snake bite is a major health hazard that leads to high mortality and great suffering in victims. The remedies are of great interest since they may have recognizable therapeutic or toxic effects and are steeped in cultural beliefs that invariably conflict with formal health care practices. The study of the interaction between plants and people is invaluable in discovering new herbal medicines and plant-derived drugs. The present study was aimed at conserving largely herbal drug knowledge and availing to the scientific world the plant therapies used as antivenom in the society. The long-term goal is to actualize conventional snake bite …

Island Area And Species Diversity In The Southwest Pacific Ocean: Is The Lizard Fauna Of Vanuatu Depauperate?, Alison M. Hamilton, Joseph H. Hartman, Christopher C. Austin

Faculty Publications

One island group suggested to be an exception to the species-area Relationship is the Vanuatu Archipelago, a group of 13 large and 80 small islands in the southwest Pacific Ocean. To test the hypothesis that the lizard fauna of the Vanuatu Archipelago does not meet the predictions of the species-area relationship, and thus is depauperate, we compare diversity among several island groups in the southwest Pacific: Fiji, the Loyalty Islands, New Caledonia, Samoa, the Solomon Islands, Tonga, and Vanuatu. We found that the lizard diversity of Vanuatu meets the pattern of diversity predicted by the species-area relationship. The Solomon Islands, …

In December 2008 the Hon Norman Moore MLC, Minister for Fisheries Western Australia appointed two independent experts to assess separately 1) the validity of scientific advice to management and 2) options to manage recreational fishing of west coast demersal scalefish. The following review (1) assesses the validity of research outlining the status of baldchin groper (Choerodon rubescens), West Australian dhufish (Glaucosoma hebraicum) and snapper (Pagrus auratus) as described in the terms of reference. In addition to the terms of reference, an opinion was requested regarding the current appropriateness of the research advice (Wise et al 2007) and the resulting management …

Artistry And Aesthetics In Contemporary Mormon And Iranian Film, Travis T. Anderson Apr 2009

Artistry And Aesthetics In Contemporary Mormon And Iranian Film, Travis T. Anderson

BYU Studies

Almost from their inception, cinematic media and technologies have been accepted and appropriated with surprising enthusiasm by Iranians and Mormons alike. Both cultures appear to have embraced cinema as a natural outgrowth of their lively and longstanding appreciation for art and family-oriented entertainment in general. The author finds that the artistic progress and quality of Mormon cinema as of 2009 has thus far, with few exceptions, fallen short of its potential, while Iranian film artists have made an astonishing number of spiritually profound, culturally insightful, and cinematically sophisticated films despite having formidable obstacles. The author encourages Mormon filmmakers to attain …

Mormon Scientist: The Life And Faith Of Henry Eyring, Ned C. Hill, Henry B. Eyring

BYU Studies

Henry Eyring (1901-1981) is undoubtedly the most celebrated scientist produced within the Mormon faith to date. He published over six hundred scientific papers and about a dozen books, and he received almost every prize science has to offer. His theories form the core of modern chemistry. One of his colleagues said, "The contributions of Dr. Henry Eyring touch practically every field of chemical science and technology in a very fundamental manner." Not only was he a brilliant scientist, he was also a man with deep faith in God and in the restoration of the gospel in modern times. This biography …

Romancing The Difference: Kenneth Burke, Bob Jones University, And The Rhetoric Of Religious Fundamentalism, Camille K. Lewis, Brian Jackson

BYU Studies

In February 2000 George W. Bush made an early campaign stop at Bob Jones University, an institution that until that very year had prohibited its students from interracial dating. The school's community had no idea his visit would thrust BJU into the national gaze, making it a scapegoat for public political anxieties. Republicans (like Bush's opponent John McCain), Democrats, and journalists alike jumped into the mix to assault BJU publicly and thereby make Bush guilty by association. Though revisions of the interracial policy had already been in the works, Bob Jones III, president of BJU at the time, went on …

Wal-Mart In The Garden District: Does The Arbitrary And Capricious Standard Of Review In Nepa Cases Undermine Citizen Participation?, Dawn E. Jourdan, Kevin Gifford

UF Law Faculty Publications

The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), enacted in 1969, requires that agencies of the U.S. government or those seeking to use federal funds to construct projects study the environmental and social impacts of said projects. Under the provisions of NEPA, a first-level review must be conducted for all projects not otherwise exempted. If the entity conducting the review deems that the project will result in a significant impact on humans or the environment, an environmental impact statement (EIS) must be prepared. The decision about whether or not to prepare an EIS can be controversial due to the fact that the …

Judicial Discretion In Talmudic Times And The Modern Era, A. David Pardo Apr 2009

Judicial Discretion In Talmudic Times And The Modern Era, A. David Pardo

Cardozo Public Law, Policy & Ethics Journal

The article explores the concept of judicial discretion within the Talmud, particularly comparing the approaches of the Palestinian Talmud (Yerushalmi) and the Babylonian Talmud (Bavli). It highlights how the Yerushalmi adheres to a stricter, more unified interpretation of the Halakhah, while the Bavli adopts a more flexible approach, incorporating extralegal considerations and societal context. The analysis demonstrates that these differences reflect broader jurisprudential theories about the role of discretion in legal decision-making.

Proteomic Comparison Of Entamoeba Histolytica And Entamoeba Dispar And The Role Of E. Histolytica Alcohol Dehydrogenase 3 In Virulence, Paul H. Davis, Minghe Chen, Xiaochun Zhang, C. Graham Clark, R. Reid Townsend, Samuel L. Stanley

Biology Faculty Publications

The protozoan intestinal parasite Entamoeba histolytica infects millions of people worldwide and is capable of causing amebic dysentery and amebic liver abscess. The closely related species Entamoeba dispar colonizes many more individuals, but this organism does not induce disease. To identify molecular differences between these two organisms that may account for their differential ability to cause disease in humans, we used two-dimensional gel-based (DIGE) proteomic analysis to compare whole cell lysates of E. histolytica and E. dispar. We observed 141 spots expressed at a substantially (.5- fold) higher level in E. histolytica HM-1:IMSS than E. dispar and 189 spots showing …
