Nitrate Contaminated Groundwater In Albuquerque's South Valley: Is Monitored Natural Attenuation An Appropriate Strategy?, Christina L. Keleher Apr 2009

Nitrate Contaminated Groundwater In Albuquerque's South Valley: Is Monitored Natural Attenuation An Appropriate Strategy?, Christina L. Keleher

Water Resources Professional Project Reports

Nitrate-contaminated groundwater in the South Valley of Albuquerque has been documented since the early 1960s. Over the past four decades, nitrate concentrations have declined, but are still significantly greater than the groundwater standard of 10 mg/L. In 1980, a case of methemoglobinemia in an infant prompted the city to extend city water lines into the residential areas of Mountain View, where residents were previously dependent upon private domestic wells for drinking water. Although the nitrate-contaminated water no longer presents a human health threat to the residents of Mountain View, all groundwater in New Mexico that contains less than 10,000 mg/L …

Attractors In Dynamics With Choice, Sanja Zivanovic Apr 2009

Attractors In Dynamics With Choice, Sanja Zivanovic

Open Access Dissertations

Dynamics with choice is a generalization of discrete-time dynamics where instead of the same evolution operator at every time step there is a choice of operators to transform the current state of the system. Many real life processes studied in chemical physics, engineering, biology and medicine, from autocatalytic reaction systems to switched systems to cellular biochemical processes to malaria transmission in urban environments, exhibit the properties described by dynamics with choice. We study the long-term behavior in dynamics with choice. We prove very general results on the existence and properties of global compact attractors in dynamics with choice. In addition, …

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

The City of Las Vegas, Detention and Enforcement is a law enforcement organization that is significantly unique in its mission and organization. On March 15, 1982, the City of Las Vegas determined that, due to extreme overcrowding at the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Departments holding facility, it was time to create the Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services. As the population of Las Vegas continued to grow, the Las Vegas Department of Detention and Correctional Services also increased in both size and degree of responsibilities. In 1986, the Las Vegas Park Rangers were absorbed and became the law …

Software Simulation And Emergency Response Training: A Case Study, Heather Burke Apr 2009

Software Simulation And Emergency Response Training: A Case Study, Heather Burke

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Emergency response training has several shortcomings that affect its effectiveness. Full-scale exercises are effective, but expensive, cumbersome and time consuming to plan and conduct. Discussion based trainings are much more cost effective and easy to plan, but the retention rate is lower on covered material. It is important to get the most out of limited training budgets by finding a way to be both efficient and effective with time and money. In this case study, the problems of the 2002 New Mexico Public Health ICS training are analyzed. This training provides good examples of how traditional training tools, style and …

Analyzing The Interconnectedness Between Space, Place, And Human Interaction With The Natural Environment: "Ecological Reawakening: Organic Dna And Evolution", Sarah Moos

Scripps Senior Theses

I have organized this paper into four chapters: "The Environmental Situation," "Space and Place," "Art and the Natural Environment," and "Creating Work of My Own." Chapter 1 explains human beings' intrinsic interconnection to the natural environment, outlining why humans should be concerned about the current degraded state of the natural world. Chapter 2 discusses the concepts of space and place. It analyzes how human beings interact with and experience spaces, developing their sense of place - within physical, theoretical, and spiritual realms. It finally illustrates the importance that spaces and places have in humans' lives. Chapter 3 describes the Land …

An Analysis Of The Environmental And Hormonal Effects On The Growth And Development Of The Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Megan Knight Apr 2009

An Analysis Of The Environmental And Hormonal Effects On The Growth And Development Of The Moss Ceratodon Purpureus, Megan Knight

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

Ceratodon has not been documented in scientific literature as thoroughly as other species of moss such as Funaria or Tortula. Commonly known as fire moss or purple horned moss, Ceratodon is often reddish or yellow-brown and the spore capsules are usually purple (Crum, 1983). A picture of the species growing in its natural habitat is shown in Figure 4. Ceratodon often grows in tufts and is considered a weed, often thriving in polluted or disturbed areas and frequently invading after a fire (Crum 1983). Ceratodon belongs to the class Bryopsida, which also contains the previously mentioned Funaria and Tortula species. …

Real Life, Invented Selves: An Analysis Of Online Self-Portraiture, Nicole E. Greene Apr 2009

Real Life, Invented Selves: An Analysis Of Online Self-Portraiture, Nicole E. Greene

Scripps Senior Theses

The Internet has been a mystifying and nebulous concept since its birth in the early 90s (Kelly). Just two years ago in an infamous public address, former Senator Ted Stevens attempted to explain the internet to the masses, calling it a series of tubes (Doctorow). This statement was followed by a flurry of blog postings, YouTube videos and general mockery from the computer savvy communities, thus confirming the fact that most people, besides the geeks, still don't fully comprehend what the Internet is. At its inception, PHDs, scientists and professors of anthropology alike hailed the Internet as a potential "gaia …

The Role Of The Viewer In The Gallery Space, Meghan Berliner Apr 2009

The Role Of The Viewer In The Gallery Space, Meghan Berliner

Scripps Senior Theses

My installation, "The Viewers", consists of three life-sized figures and a projected video feed. The figures are placed in and around the gallery space, and the video originates from a hidden camera installed in one of the figures eyes. The first figure that the viewer encounters upon entering the gallery space is hyper-realistic security guard. His position behind the gallery circulation desk, a space which is traditionally assumed not to be an 'art space' allows him to view those entering the gallery while remaining relatively unnoticed. A camera that is installed in his one of his eye sockets and hidden …

Lead Bullet Fragments In Venison From Rifle-Killed Deer: Potential For Human Dietary Exposure, W. Grainger Hunt, Richard T. Watson, J. Lindsay Oaks, Chris N. Parish, Kurt K. Burnham, Russell L. Tucker, James R. Belthoff, Garret Hart

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Human consumers of wildlife killed with lead ammunition may be exposed to health risks associated with lead ingestion. This hypothesis is based on published studies showing elevated blood lead concentrations in subsistence hunter populations, retention of ammunition residues in the tissues of hunter-killed animals, and systemic, cognitive, and behavioral disorders associated with human lead body burdens once considered safe. Our objective was to determine the incidence and bioavailability of lead bullet fragments in hunter-killed venison, a widely-eaten food among hunters and their families. We radiographed 30 eviscerated carcasses of White-tailed Deer (Odocoileus virginianus) shot by hunters with standard …

Justice Above Profit, Sustainability Above Growth, Humanity Above Economy: Vandana Shiva And The Alternative Development Movement, Julia Magon Braker Apr 2009

Justice Above Profit, Sustainability Above Growth, Humanity Above Economy: Vandana Shiva And The Alternative Development Movement, Julia Magon Braker

Pomona Senior Theses

Multiple activists challenge the established development paradigm, prioritizing issues such as human rights, economic justice and environmental sustainability, as opposed to neoliberal development’s focus on macroeconomics and corporations. These activists include Dr. Vandana Shiva. Well-renowned activists, academics and politicians criticize the stances that Shiva takes on globalization and development issues, claiming that they are uninformed, too radical or misguided. These thoughts provoke the core question of this thesis—do Vandana Shiva’s theories and practices promote just, sustainable development?

"The Earth Nourishing Itself": Bodies And Theology In American Food Production Systems, Katherine M. Dutcher Apr 2009

"The Earth Nourishing Itself": Bodies And Theology In American Food Production Systems, Katherine M. Dutcher

Pomona Senior Theses

The industrial food production system is a head-on collision of ecology, morality, and human health, and their respective bodies of earth, animal and human. This thesis is an attempt to grapple with that damage from a theological perspective. What would it mean for a theology to answer to the degradation of American soil that sustains nothing but oil-drenched monoculture? to the horrifying conditions under which we as a nation raise, feed, and slaughter the animals for our consumption? to the dizzying array of food-related diseases that now affect our country in staggering frequency, particularly among lower socioeconomic classes? And what …

Sociological And Psychological Predispositions To Serial Murder, Katie Marie Krueger Apr 2009

Sociological And Psychological Predispositions To Serial Murder, Katie Marie Krueger

Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection

This paper looks specifically at the true definition of a serial killer, attempting to clarify the misleading depiction that has come from the media influence. Twenty-one people, including infamous murderers such as Ted Bundy and Jeffrey Dahmer, as well as more obscure killers, such as Carl Panzram, were studied in depth. Data was gathered from a variety of published sources on each convicted serial killer focusing on his/her life prior to the beginning of the killing spree. Unlike previous research on the topic, this investigation looked at a larger sample of serial killers, as well as a more complete set …

Ray, Pastor, Bronx African American History Project

Oral Histories

The Bronx African-American History Project conducted this interview with an entourage representing the Ashanti King. Topics discussed included a fund for schools in Ghana, the relationship between different Ghanaian ethnic groups, and the royal protocol surrounding the Ashanti King.

The interviewees talked to the BAAHP about their efforts to establish a fund to support Ghanaian education. According to the interviewees, $500 can support two or three students in Ghana, a fact which led to their decision to assist in Ghanaian education. The interviewees have also sought to increase the technological presence in Ghanaian classrooms by sending computers and printers to …

Developmental Changes In Zebrafish Embryos Exposed To Bisphenol A Leeched From Commonly Used Plastics, David L. Ortiz Apr 2009

Developmental Changes In Zebrafish Embryos Exposed To Bisphenol A Leeched From Commonly Used Plastics, David L. Ortiz

Senior Honors Theses

Bisphenol A, an estrogen mimicker, is found in the commonly used plastic, polycarbonate. Zebrafish embryos were raised in water that had been heated in polycarbonate water bottles by either microwaving for 5 minutes, or boiling for one hour. Near total mortality was seen in 7 days for the embryos growing in bottle-microwaved water, and 9 days for those raised in bottle-boiled water. Zebrafish embryos were also grown in the following known concentrations of BPA: 2mg/l, 14mg/l, 16mg/l, 50mg/l, 135mg/l, and 235mg/l. A stepwise relationship between concentration of BPA and embryo lifespan was seen, and the lowest observed adverse effect level …
