San Diego Natural History Museum Strategic Planning Project, Stephanie Delong, Maureen Guarcello, Anna Plaster, Jim Stone

Strategic Planning

In January 2009, a team of students from the University of San Diego’s (USD) Nonprofit Leadership and Management conducted a pre-planning exercise to help prepare the San Diego Natural History Museum (SDNHM) for its 2012-2022 strategic plan. With an annual attendance last year of more than 600,000 visitors, the Museum is one of the largest cultural institutions in Balboa Park. The consulting team engaged in an extensive discovery process, including a review of the Museum’s current strategic plan1 and preliminary key informant interviews. The results of this discovery process pointed towards a number of themes from which, three key strategic …

Karst Regions Of The World (Krow): Global Karst Datasets And Maps To Advance The Protection Of Karst Species And Habitats Worldwide, Emily Hollingsworth May 2009

Karst Regions Of The World (Krow): Global Karst Datasets And Maps To Advance The Protection Of Karst Species And Habitats Worldwide, Emily Hollingsworth

KIP Theses and Dissertations

Historically, many people dealing with caves and karst have tended to be guarded about sharing information. They have sought to protect their property, their resources, liability risk, and special interests by keeping details about karst (especially caves) secret. This has resulted in inconsistent, localized, and hard-to-access knowledge and data, in highly generalized large-scale maps of widely varying consistency and quality.

The Effects Of Stream Discharge And Channelization On The Macroinvertebrate Community In A Semi-Arid Landscape, Thomas L. Kennedy May 2009

The Effects Of Stream Discharge And Channelization On The Macroinvertebrate Community In A Semi-Arid Landscape, Thomas L. Kennedy

Biology ETDs

The Middle Rio Grande is the second largest watershed in the southwestern United States and is a vitally important component for the biodiversity in the region. Similar to many other rivers, the MRG is a temporally dynamic system that unfortunately, has been subjected to river regulation. As a result, the river has become channelised in many reaches disconnecting it from the surrounding floodplain. The effects of river regulation on the MRG and its surrounding riparian zone were largely unknown. I tested three main hypothesis with regards to the macroinvertebrates in the MRG: 1) Does flow variability structure the aquatic macroinvertebrate …

Controls On Microbial Community Structure In Thermal Environments: Exploring Bacterial Diversity And The Relative Influence Of Geochemistry And Geography, Kendra Renee Mitchell May 2009

Controls On Microbial Community Structure In Thermal Environments: Exploring Bacterial Diversity And The Relative Influence Of Geochemistry And Geography, Kendra Renee Mitchell

Biology ETDs

Community wide molecular surveys have revealed incredible hidden phylogenetic and metabolic diversity in microbial habitats. We have conducted the first microbial survey of Yellowstone National Park thermal environments, sampling 103 communities from across the park and across the range of conditions found. Yellowstone is particularly suited for this type of research because of the large number and wide variety of thermal springs, which are naturally occurring chemostats enabling examination of the factors that control microbes and drive community structure. In addition to samples for molecular microbial analysis, we collected water for extensive geochemical analysis in order to begin to deduce …

Hauntings In The Church: Counterfeit Christianity Through The Fin De Siècle Gothic Novel, Melissa Ann West May 2009

Hauntings In The Church: Counterfeit Christianity Through The Fin De Siècle Gothic Novel, Melissa Ann West

Masters Theses

The lengthy Victorian period, extending from 1832 until 1901, was a time of cultural turmoil. New scientific discoveries were being made daily, and Christianity was forced to deal with issues of Darwinism, occultism, and growing disbelief in God. By the start of the fin de siècle, God was an impartial deity sitting on His almighty throne, and man was nothing more than a highly evolved animal. The church, both Catholic and Anglican, did not exist to lead man toward salvation, but existed because of a dated adherence to cultural tradition.

No one genre captured the religious upheavals of the age …

Migration And Mixing Between Populations In Disease Models, David Burger May 2009

Migration And Mixing Between Populations In Disease Models, David Burger

Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects

The goal of this thesis is to model the spread of disease between populations and find ways to prevent its continued epidemic. This thesis studies disease spread as a function of migration in epidemiological models. The models are constructed using the compartmental approach, and we compare discrete and continuous time approximations. In the discrete model, we will look at ways that induced migration can cause an epidemic case to turn into a dieout case. It will be shown that migration can only effect the size of an outbreak, but cannot create or destroy one. For the continuous cases, we will …

Motivations For Us Foreign Direct Investment, Christina Buoninfante May 2009

Motivations For Us Foreign Direct Investment, Christina Buoninfante

Honors College Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to determine US firms’ motivations for foreign direct investment and to explore to what extent US firms continue to invest into China and India. I first correlate the agricultural, industrial, and service sectors in the United States with those of China and India. I find that there is a positive relationship between the correlation of US sectors and the host country’s sectors and foreign direct investment into each sector. This supports the theory of Vernon’s product life cycle hypothesis, which explains that firms expand into lesser developed countries when their product becomes more sensitive …

Girl Empowerment And Unspoken Discourses On Girl Sexuality In Stephanie Meyer's Twilight Saga, Caitlin Gulliford

Honors College Theses

In this paper, I explore how Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight saga employs a form of girl sexual citizenship that recognizes girls as sexualized, but maintains unspoken structures of compulsory heterosexuality, regressive gender norms, and hyperconsumerism in order to police girls as a protection of patriarchy.

The Politics Of 'Giving Back' And Its Effects On The Autonomy Of Women After Sex Trafficking, Amanda N. Ferrandino May 2009

The Politics Of 'Giving Back' And Its Effects On The Autonomy Of Women After Sex Trafficking, Amanda N. Ferrandino

Honors College Theses

In the field of humanitarian service, advocates have the intentions of speaking on behalf of those they represent. Many activists and organizations seek to ‘give back’ to those in need of food, shelter and social services. But, does ‘giving back’ really help? This essay explores the politics and hierarchies of humanitarian aid to discover if independence and agency for aid recipients can be achieved. On the path to independence, what are the obstacles that non-governmental organizations (NGOs) and activists create for the underprivileged? Are there effective frameworks and methods for advocate organizations to approach the underprivileged?

Authors such as Columbia …

Anti-Inflammatory Activity Of Calotropis Gigantea And Tridax Procumbens On Carrageenin-Induced Paw Edema In Rats, S. Awasthi, M. Irshad, M. K. Das, S. S. Ganti, Moshahid A. Rizvi

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The anti-inflammatory activities of extract of Calotropis gigantea R.Br. and Tridax procumbens Linn., were assessed on carrageenin-induced paw edema along with standard drug, Ibuprofen. The Ibuprofen significantly reduced paw edema at the dose of 200mg/Kg bw orally. The oral administration equi-effective dose (ED50) of C. gigantea (600mg/Kg bw) and T. procumbens (400 mg/Kg bw) individually revealed about 20-35% more activity than the one rendered by administration of 50mg/Kg bw of Ibuprofen. The effect of C. gigantea and T. procumbens along with various dose regimen of Ibuprofen showed greater anti-inflammatory activities than the Ibuprofen alone.

“Who Hath The World In Honde”: Conflicts Of Agency In Three Canterbury Tales, Samantha Anne Streger May 2009

“Who Hath The World In Honde”: Conflicts Of Agency In Three Canterbury Tales, Samantha Anne Streger

English Honors Papers

This thesis examines the subject of conflicting agency in three of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, and discusses the ways in which confusions of power shed light on the issues inherent in governing medieval social ideologies. In the Knight’s Tale, conflicting agency between the humans and the gods is evidence of the Knight’s failure to bring order to his tale. Because the Knight is unable to rationally explain the universe by employing the noble ideals of chivalry, honor, and faith in higher power, the confusion of power in the Knight’s Tale highlights the failure of noble pursuits. In the Wife of Bath’s …

Management Of Grassy Balds Communities In The Roan Highlands, James T. Donaldson, Nora Schubert, L. C. Huff

ETSU Faculty Works

The Highlands of Roan Mountain best exemplify that which is rare and unique within high elevation communities of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The Roan Highlands are protected through a landscape-level conservation initiative originally established by the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy (SAHC) and the U. S. Forest Service (USFS) in 1974. The Roan massif rises more than 6,000 feet above mean sea level and straddles the border of North Carolina and Tennessee in the Pisgah and Cherokee National Forests, respectively. Among its unique aspects, the Roan supports at least 800 known plant species, 27 rare plant communities, and 33 federally or …

Personality And Leader Emergence In Groups, Rhett M. Smith May 2009

Personality And Leader Emergence In Groups, Rhett M. Smith

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Trait-based approaches to leadership have been around for a long time. Starting out as one of the original theories of leadership, research in the area of trait- based perspectives began to slow and give way to other, different domains of predicting leadership in the 1950s. Only recently has there been a revived interest in the trait approaches to leadership. Building on this resurgence, the present study examined the relationship between leader emergence and the Five Factor Model of personality (Extraversion, Agreeableness, Openness to Experience, Neuroticism, and Conscientiousness).

Exploding Anthropocentrism: Understanding Optical Democracy In Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian, Jeremy Kevin Locke May 2009

Exploding Anthropocentrism: Understanding Optical Democracy In Cormac Mccarthy's Blood Meridian, Jeremy Kevin Locke

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In this study, I will attempt to synthesize the aesthetic and metaphysical conceptions of optical democracy. While several critics contend that the concept of optical democracy influences all of McCarthy’s novels, I will limit this treatment to Blood Meridian. By focusing one this one text, I will be able to move beyond the definitional treatments of this concept offered by previous critics and demonstrate how optical democracy works to produce meaning in two particular subjects explored in the novel: history and race. I will suggest that McCarthy uses optical democracy as an aesthetic technique, as described by Holloway, to abolish …
