Truth About Wicca, Emily Heiden Dec 2009

Truth About Wicca, Emily Heiden

Verbum

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay's first paragraph.

"Wicca. A five letter word that is many of a time mistaken for another five letter word; witch. Yet in present definitions the two are far from interchangeable. Wicca is a religious practice that is slowly being recognized in the United States and other areas around the world. It’s not a form of association with the devil, nor do Wiccans even believe in the devil. In truth Wicca is more about nature and the beauty of nature than anything else."

Forest Change And Balsam Woolly Adelgig Infestation In High Elevation Forests Of Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina., Laura Lusk Dec 2009

Forest Change And Balsam Woolly Adelgig Infestation In High Elevation Forests Of Mt. Mitchell, North Carolina., Laura Lusk

Undergraduate Honors Theses

The Black Mountain range of western North Carolina supports some of the most extensive, but threatened high elevation forests in the southern Appalachians. Of particular note, the insect pathogen, balsam woolly adelgid (Adelges piceae Ratzeburg) has been present on Mt. Mitchell for over fifty years. In anticipation of potential changes in forest composition, vegetation surveys were first conducted in 1966 on nine one-acre plots near the summit of Mt. Mitchell. These plots were re-surveyed in 1978, 1985 and 2002. The purpose of this study was to re-census those plots and use those data to analyze long-term trends in forest …

Seeds Of Truth: The Importance Of C. S. Lewis's Interactions With Child Readers In The Chronicles Of Narnia, Joseph Thouvenel Dec 2009

Seeds Of Truth: The Importance Of C. S. Lewis's Interactions With Child Readers In The Chronicles Of Narnia, Joseph Thouvenel

Seminary Masters Theses

This paper explores the ways in which C.S. Lewis's interactions with child readers in The Chronicles of Narnia provide important insight for communicating theological and spiritual truths to children. Through a brief examination of Lewis's own childhood as well as a concise analysis of his writings to and about children, important insights regarding the place of imagination and wonder within The Chronicles of Narnia will be revealed. This paper also inspects the seven books that comprise The Chronicles of Narnia, paying specific attention to Lewis's use of first- and second-person narrative within this series as a means of demonstrating his …

Exercise Power Grid Display And Web Interface, Alexander (Alex) Chernetz

Computer Engineering

The 2008-2009 expansion of the Recreation Center at Cal Poly includes three new rooms with cardiovascular fitness equipment. As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable development, the new machines connect to the main power grid and generate power during a workout. This document explains the process of quantifying and expressing the power generated using two interfaces: an autonomous display designed for a television with a text size and amount of detail adaptable to multiple television sizes and viewing distances, and an interactive, more detailed Web interface accessible with any Java-capable computer system or browser.

Understanding Folk Dance And Gypsy Style In Selected Pieces For Clarinet And Piano By 20th Century Hungarian Composers: An Interpretive Guide, Jessica Vansteenburg Dec 2009

Understanding Folk Dance And Gypsy Style In Selected Pieces For Clarinet And Piano By 20th Century Hungarian Composers: An Interpretive Guide, Jessica Vansteenburg

Glenn Korff School of Music: Dissertations, Theses, Student Creative Work, and Performances

Hungary has a long and rich history of folk music and dance. The clarinet has played a part in this history and remains a popular instrument in the country. Clarinet is most often associated with the verbunkos and is a regular member of the Gypsy band. The desire for composers of art music to compose in the folk tradition grew out of Hungarian nationalism in the 19th century and continued into the 20th century partly due to political pressures and the value of tradition in Hungarian music education.
Following a historical overview of the folk music and dance tradition in …

The Presence Of The Absent, Verónica Peña-Martínez Dec 2009

The Presence Of The Absent, Verónica Peña-Martínez

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis, The Presence of the Absent, is an autobiographical recounting of the production of my major works from 2006 through 2009. This period was marked by my separation from family and from my native country, Spain — and by my father's suicide. Since I left Spain, I have compensated for the physical absence of my loved ones through the creation of works that, through confining my body, function as thresholds between the (me) here and the (they) there. These works comprise a series of installations and performance pieces. Among my more important influences are the works of the visual …

Individual Responsibility As Explained In The Odyssey, Jill Britten Dec 2009

Individual Responsibility As Explained In The Odyssey, Jill Britten

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This thesis attempts to explain the relevance of teaching the Odyssey in the contemporary classroom. Although it is arguable that the rift between today‟s world and the world of the ancient Greeks is too great, accessible connections can be made. A close reading of the text reveals that one of the major themes in the Odyssey pertains to the concept of individual responsibility and how the individual plays a vital role to the wellbeing of a healthy society. Through the depiction of various societies that range from hypercivilized to savage, the reader can begin to form a solid idea of …

Behavioral Changes In Aging But Not Young Mice After Neonatal Exposure To The Polybrominated Flame Retardant Decabde, Deborah C. Rice, W. Douglas Thompson, Elizabeth A. Reeve, Kristen D. Onos, Mina Assadollahzadeh, Vincent P. Markowski Dec 2009

Behavioral Changes In Aging But Not Young Mice After Neonatal Exposure To The Polybrominated Flame Retardant Decabde, Deborah C. Rice, W. Douglas Thompson, Elizabeth A. Reeve, Kristen D. Onos, Mina Assadollahzadeh, Vincent P. Markowski

Applied Medical Sciences [Discontinued]

BACKGROUND: After several decades of commercial use, the flame-retardant chemicals polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) and their metabolites are pervasive environmental contaminants and are detected in the human body. Decabrominated diphenyl ether (decaBDE) is currently the only PBDE in production in the United States. OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the health effects of decaBDE. In the present study we examined the effects of neonatal decaBDE exposure on behavior in mice at two ages. METHODS: Neonatal male and female C57BL6/J mice were exposed to a daily oral dose of 0, 6, or 20 mg/kg decaBDE from postnatal days 2 through 15. Two …

A Christian Apologetic To A Buddhist Christ, David James Forbes Dec 2009

A Christian Apologetic To A Buddhist Christ, David James Forbes

Masters Theses

This is a paper that expands on the concept that Jesus may have been a Buddhist "bodhisattva". It then gives a Christian apologetic as to why this cannot be true. This is accomplished by referencing the historical origins of Christianity and the differences between the lives of a bodhisattva and Jesus Christ.

Stimuli-Responsive Hydrogel Microdomes Integrated With Genetically Engineered Proteins For High-Throughput Screening Of Pharmaceuticals, Sylvia Daunert, Sapna K. Deo, Jason Douglas Ehrick, Tyler William Browning, Leonidas G. Bachas

Chemistry Faculty Patents

A hydrogel microdome that can swell in response to a stimuli or target molecule is formed by polymerizing a mixture comprising a monomer capable of forming a hydrogel with a biopolymer. An array of hydrogel microdomes can be formed on a substrate by microspotting the mixture and polymerizing. The array can be used for high-throughput screening of analytes as well as for use as an actuator and biosensor using the swelling property of the hydrogel.

Sustained Release Of Multiple Growth Factors From Injectable Polymeric System As A Novel Therapeutic Approach Towards Angiogenesis, Qinghua Sun, Eduardo A. Silva, Aixia Wang, James C. Fritton, David J. Mooney, Mitchell B. Schaffler, Paul M. Grossman, Sanjay Rajagopalan

Publications and Research

Purpose The aim was to investigate that a bio-degradable alginate and poly lactide-co-glycolide (PLG) system capable of delivering growth factors sequentially would be superior to single growth factor delivery in promoting neovascularization and improving perfusion. Methods Three groups of apoE null mice underwent unilateral hindlimb ischemia surgery and received ischemic limb intramuscular injections of alginate (Blank), alginate containing VEGF165 (VEGF), or alginate containing VEGF165 combined with PLG microspheres containing PDGF-BB (VEGF/PDGF). Vascularity in the ischemic hindlimb was assessed by morphologic and immunohistochemical end-points, while changes in blood flow were assessed by Laser Doppler Perfusion Index. Muscle VEGF and PDGF content …

Fall Field Report, August-November 2009, W. Ross Silcock Dec 2009

Fall Field Report, August-November 2009, W. Ross Silcock

Nebraska Bird Review

This was probably the most "normal" fall season in a while, as measured by the small number of late departure dates among summer residents and migrants, early arrival dates among winter residents and migrants, high counts, and rarities. In other words, very little of significance happened. Indeed, in order to provide a spark, I'll even mention three exotics that were reported: a Swan Goose at Fremont 26 November (JRo), a Common Peafowl in Dodge Co 5 August (JWe), and a White-faced Cockatiel caught in a Dixon Co yard 24 August (JJ). None is likely to be a threat to our …
