Being rational and Cartesian, the detective novel is often bound by powerful constraints which seem not very compatible with the supernatural and the fantastic often defining West Indian writing. Through the analysis of Martinican Patrick Chamoiseau’s Solibo Magnifique (1988) and Haitian Gary Victor’s Les cloches de la Brésilienne (2006), we will nevertheless see how well they work together, the irrational taking hold of the detective novel, leading paradoxically to the progressive elimination of Cartesian practices and challenging an exclusively rational portrayal of the world.

Boundless Fluids Using The Lattice-Boltzmann Method, Kyle J. Haughey Jun 2009

Boundless Fluids Using The Lattice-Boltzmann Method, Kyle J. Haughey

Master's Theses

Computer-generated imagery is ubiquitous in today's society, appearing in advertisements, video games, and computer-animated movies among other places. Much of this imagery needs to be as realistic as possible, and animators have turned to techniques such as fluid simulation to create scenes involving substances like smoke, fire, and water. The Lattice-Boltzmann Method (LBM) is one fluid simulation technique that has gained recent popularity due to its relatively simple basic algorithm and the ease with which it can be distributed across multiple processors. Unfortunately, current LBM simulations also suffer from high memory usage and restrict free surface fluids to domains of …

A Nonsense Mutation In A Cinnamyl Alcohol Dehydrogenase Gene Is Responsible For The Sorghum Brown Midrib6 Phenotype1[W][Oa], Scott E. Sattler, Aaron J. Saathoff, Eric J. Haas, Nathan A. Palmer, Deanna L. Funnell-Harris, Gautam Sarath, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

Department of Plant Pathology: Faculty Publications

brown midrib6 (bmr6) affects phenylpropanoid metabolism, resulting in reduced lignin concentrations and altered lignin composition in sorghum (Sorghum bicolor). Recently, bmr6 plants were shown to have limited cinnamyl alcohol dehydrogenase activity (CAD; EC 1.1.1.195), the enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of hydroxycinnamoyl aldehydes (monolignals) to monolignols. A candidate gene approach was taken to identify Bmr6. Two CAD genes (Sb02g024190 and Sb04g005950) were identified in the sorghum genome based on similarity to known CAD genes and through DNA sequencing a nonsense mutation was discovered in Sb04g005950 that results in a truncated protein lacking the NADPH-binding and C-terminal …

Fisheries Occasional Publication No. 68 - A Quota Management System For The Western Rock Lobster Fishery, Rock Lobster Industry Advisory Committee (Rliac), Department Of Fisheries, Western Australia

Fisheries Occasional Publications

There has been much debate over the past two decades on the most appropriate long-term management framework for Western Australia’s Western Rock Lobster Fishery. More recently a debate over whether the fishery would be best managed under a Quota Management System (QMS) or the continuation of the current Input Control Management System (ICMS) culminated in an industry vote coordinated by the Western Rock Lobster Council (WRLC) in 2006 . The outcome of this vote resulted in industry support to retain the existing management system based on input controls2 , however, shortly after the vote there was a renewed level of …

The Herpes Simplex Virus Type 1 Glycoprotein D (Gf) Cytoplasmic Terminus And Full-Length Ge Are Not Essential And Do Not Function In A Redundant Manner For Cytoplasmic Virion Envelopment And Egress, Cheol Lee Hyun, Vladimir N. Chouljenko, Dmitry V. Chouljenko, Marc J. Boudreaux, K. G. Kousoulas

Faculty Publications

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) acquires its final envelope by budding into cytoplasmic vesicles thought to be derived from trans-Golgi network membranes. This process is facilitated by interactions among the carboxyl termini of viral glycoproteins and tegument proteins. To directly investigate the relative importance of the carboxyl terminus of glycoprotein D (gD) in the presence or absence of gE, a recombinant virus (gDΔct) was constructed to specify a truncated gD lacking the carboxy-terminal 29 amino acids. Furthermore, two additional recombinant viruses were constructed by mutating from ATG to CTG the initiation codons of gE (gEctg) or both gE and …

Becoming A Real Woman: Alterity And The Embodiment Of Cashinahua Gendered Identity, Cecilia Mccallum

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

As they grow, Cashinahua boys and girls acquire gendered human agency through their embodied experiences and the conscious work of their kin and close affines. Men and women come to occupy specific relations with the interior and the exterior of the social domain they construct through their daily productive and consumptive activities, such that women are associated with the former and men with the latter in the constitution of sociality. A classic ethnological depiction might say that, in the first instance, relations with the exterior are conducted by men, take the form of predation or of exchange and use the …

High-Throughput Single Cell Arrays As A Novel Tool In Biopreservation, Kenneth L. Roach, Kevin R. King, Korkut Uygun, Steven C. Hand, Isaac S. Kohane, Martin L. Yarmush, Mehmet Toner

Faculty Publications

Microwell array cytometry is a novel high-throughput experimental technique that makes it possible to correlate pre-stress cell phenotypes and post-stress outcomes with single cell resolution. Because the cells are seeded in a high density grid of cell-sized microwells, thousands of individual cells can be tracked and imaged through manipulations as extreme as freezing or drying. Unlike flow cytometry, measurements can be made at multiple time points for the same set of cells. Unlike conventional image cytometry, image analysis is greatly simplified by arranging the cells in a spatially defined pattern and physically separating them from one another. To demonstrate the …

Faculty Publications

The extract of plant Shilianhua (SLH; Sinocrassula indica Berge) is a component in a commercial product for control of blood glucose. However, it remains to be investigated whether the SLH extract enhances insulin sensitivity in a model of type 2 diabetes. To address this question, the SLH crude extract was fractionated into four parts on the basis of polarity, and bioactivities of each part were tested in cells. One of the fractions, F100, exhibited a strong activity in the stimulation of glucose consumption in vitro. Glucose consumption was induced significantly by F100 in 3T3-L1 adipocytes, L6 myotubes, and H4IIE hepatocytes …

Ethics, Evidence And International Debt, Julie A. Nelson Jun 2009

Ethics, Evidence And International Debt, Julie A. Nelson

Economics Faculty Publication Series

The assumption that contracts are largely impersonal, rational, voluntary agreements drawn up between self-interested individual agents is a convenient fiction, necessary for analysis using conventional economic methods. Papers prepared for a recent conference on ethics and international debt were shaped by just such an assumption. The adequacy of this approach is, however, challenged by evidence about who is affected by international debt, how contracts are actually made and followed, the behavior of actors in financial markets, and the motivations of scholars themselves. This essay uses insights from feminist and relational scholarship from several disciplines to analyze the reasons for this …

Restrictive Trade Measures Based On Extraterritorial Human Rights Violations: An Analysis Under Allocation Of Regulatory Jurisdiction And Transaction Costs, Gustavo Ferreira Ribeiro Jun 2009

Restrictive Trade Measures Based On Extraterritorial Human Rights Violations: An Analysis Under Allocation Of Regulatory Jurisdiction And Transaction Costs, Gustavo Ferreira Ribeiro

Maurer Theses and Dissertations

Are states entitled to take unilateral or collective trade measures in cases of extraterritorial human rights violations? Are states obligated to do so? The debate is often blurred by a multitude of legal, political, economic, and moral arguments that have, so far, produced many misunderstandings. On one hand, the human rights community alleges that the superiority of human rights resolves any conflict. On the other hand, the trade community fears the intrusion of human rights language and power within the trade regime, including multilateral regimes like the World Trade Organization.

While exploring the above issue, this dissertation unfolds in three …

Human Dispersals: Mathematical Models And The Archaeological Record, James Steele Jun 2009

Human Dispersals: Mathematical Models And The Archaeological Record, James Steele

Human Biology

The theoretical literature on human population dispersal processes at the large time and space scale is reviewed, including references to and discussions of relevant empirical data. The basic Fisher-KPP reaction-diffusion system is summarized for the single population situation, and developments relating to the Allee effect, density-dependent dispersal, time delay, advection, spatial and temporal heterogeneity, and anomalous and stratifi ed diffusion are reviewed. Two- and three-population competitive reaction-diffusion systems of Lotka-Volterra type are also reviewed, as are dynamic approaches to carrying capacity that incorporate predator-prey instabilities, ecosystem engineering, and gene-culture coevolution.

Evolutionary Demography And The Population History Of The European Early Neolithic, Stephen Shennan Jun 2009

Evolutionary Demography And The Population History Of The European Early Neolithic, Stephen Shennan

Human Biology

In this paper I propose that evolutionary demography and associated theory from human behavioral ecology provide a strong basis for explaining the available evidence for the patterns observed in the fi rst agricultural settlement of Europe in the 7th–5th millennium cal. BC, linking together a variety of what have previously been disconnected observations and casting doubt on some long-standing existing models. An outline of relevant aspects of life history theory, which provides the foundation for understanding demography, is followed by a review of large-scale demographic patterns in the early Neolithic, which point to rapid population increase and a process of …
