Why Some Species Of Birds Do Not Avoid Inbreeding: Insights From New Zealand Robins And Saddlebacks, Ian G. Jamieson, Sabrina S. Taylor, Lisa N. Tracy, Hanna Kokko, Doug P. Armstrong Jun 2009

Why Some Species Of Birds Do Not Avoid Inbreeding: Insights From New Zealand Robins And Saddlebacks, Ian G. Jamieson, Sabrina S. Taylor, Lisa N. Tracy, Hanna Kokko, Doug P. Armstrong

Faculty Publications

When dispersal options are limited and encounters with relatives are likely, individuals need to recognize and avoid mating with kin to avoid the fitness costs of close inbreeding. New Zealand robins and saddlebacks are genetically monogamous and possess life-history traits that predict they should show zero tolerance of close inbreeding. However, of 11 population-years of pedigree data, there was evidence of inbreeding avoidance in only 1 year. We also found no indication that incestuous pairings were avoided or that individuals were choosing genetically dissimilar mates based on microsatellite DNA analysis. Furthermore, a review of the literature revealed that inbreeding avoidance …

Phylogenetic Analyses Reveal Monophyletic Origin Of The Ergot Alkaloid Gene Dmaw In Fungi, Miao Liu, Daniel G. Panaccione, Christopher L. Schardl Jun 2009

Phylogenetic Analyses Reveal Monophyletic Origin Of The Ergot Alkaloid Gene Dmaw In Fungi, Miao Liu, Daniel G. Panaccione, Christopher L. Schardl

Plant Pathology Faculty Publications

Ergot alkaloids are indole-derived mycotoxins that are important in agriculture and medicine. Ergot alkaloids are produced by a few representatives of two distantly related fungal lineages, the Clavicipitaceae and the Trichocomaceae. Comparison of the ergot alkaloid gene clusters from these two lineages revealed differences in the relative positions and orientations of several genes. The question arose: is ergot alkaloid biosynthetic capability from a common origin? We used a molecular phylogenetic approach to gain insights into the evolution of ergot alkaloid biosynthesis. The 4-γ,γ-dimethylallyltryptophan synthase gene, dmaW, encodes the first step in the pathway. Amino acid sequences deduced …

The Incorporation Of Direct Democracy : Populism And Initiative Practices As Contested Terrain, Larry Galizio Jun 2009

The Incorporation Of Direct Democracy : Populism And Initiative Practices As Contested Terrain, Larry Galizio

Dissertations and Theses

What are the democratic implications of the increasing professionalization of direct democracy?

The dissertation takes a critical approach to the "initiative-industrial complex" and offers a counter-thesis to prevailing scholarly research on the substantial growth in the use of political consultants in initiative campaigns. The political economic analysis approaches direct legislation campaigns and elections as constituent parts of a system of legitimation for the existing set of social relations.

An historical analysis reveals that the contemporary era of initiative activity rivals that of its frequent use during the populist and progressive eras; and that in the early 21st century direct legislation …

Rfid Tag Readability Issues With Palletized Loads Of Consumer Goods, Jay Singh, Eric Olsen, Keith Vorst, K. Tripp Jun 2009

Rfid Tag Readability Issues With Palletized Loads Of Consumer Goods, Jay Singh, Eric Olsen, Keith Vorst, K. Tripp

Industrial Technology and Packaging

Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is an automatic identification technology, relying on storing and remotely retrieving data using devices called RFID tags. This technology is being used in enterprise supply chain management-related applications to improve the efficiency of inventory tracking and management. However, this technology has not been able to realize its promised potential because of several factors, such as lack of congruous worldwide standards, privacy issues and less than perfect read rates in supply chain applications. This research aimed to evaluate the readability issues commonly faced by tagged cases of palletized consumer products. The variables studied in this research were …

New Play Dramaturgy: Finding Sunsets In Nantucket, Ian Tweedie Jun 2009

New Play Dramaturgy: Finding Sunsets In Nantucket, Ian Tweedie

Theses and Dissertations

This is an outline of the journey of James Campese’s La Vita Nuova. It began as a raw script entitled Sunsets in Nantucket, which I originally encountered during the spring of 2006. After edits, research and meetings it became a successful work which was presented as a staged reading on March 1st, 2009. This thesis describes how I worked with James to transform the script into its final product, managing both the delicacy of the script and the writer. Included is research on New Play Dramaturgy that helped me find the most effective way to work with the script, then …

Evaluation Of A Level System With A Built In Token Economy To Decrease Inappropriate Behaviors Of Individuals With Mental Retardation, Ashley Tomaka Jun 2009

Evaluation Of A Level System With A Built In Token Economy To Decrease Inappropriate Behaviors Of Individuals With Mental Retardation, Ashley Tomaka

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The level system is a behavioral procedure that alters the status of a participant contingent on his or her behaviors; within each level the amount of reinforcement is different. In most cases, level systems are paired with another form of treatment such as a token economy. In the current study, the effectiveness of a level system with a built in token economy was evaluated within three intensive residential group homes with 3 male participants. Each participant was diagnosed with mental retardation and behavioral issues. The level system was comprised of 5 different levels, each having different privileges and reinforcers. Each …

Rhinovirus-Associated Wheezing And Asthma In Young Children, Zofia Piotrowska Jun 2009

Rhinovirus-Associated Wheezing And Asthma In Young Children, Zofia Piotrowska

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Human rhinoviruses (HRV) are a common cause of the common cold, and are thought to be associated with asthma exacerbations in both children and adults. Recently, HRV have been identified as a major cause of hospitalization in children < 5 years old. The purpose of this study was too determine whether HRV are a cause of either wheezing and/or hospitalization in children < 2 years old. We used a PCR assay to screen for HRV infection in children < 2 years old: 1) with symptoms of upper or lower respiratory tract disease without wheezing; 2) with wheezing; 3) who were asymptomatic. A group of children who had a respiratory specimen submitted to a diagnostic laboratory for whatever reason and who tested negative for four common viruses in the clinical lab were also screened. All specimens were collected between January 1 and December 31, 2004. Phylogenetic analyses were performed on a majority of HRV isolates. Overall, 28 (17%) of 165 children with symptoms of respiratory traction infection without wheezing; 21 (26.3%) of 80 children with symptoms of respiratory tract infection and wheezing; 3 (3%) of 93 asymptomatic children and 47 (23.3%) of 202 children with specimens submitted to the diagnostic laboratory tested positive for HRV. The difference between the rate of infection in the asymptomatic group and each of the three other groups was statistically significant (p<0.01). Among children with samples submitted to the diagnostic laboratory in whom HRV was the only identified pathogen, 55% were hospitalized. This rate was similar to that observed for respiratory syncytial virus (52.7%) among children of a similar age group and time period (P=0.85). Diverse groups of HRV were circulating during the one-year study period. We conclude that HRV are important pathogens among young children < 2 years old and are responsible for a significant proportion of wheezing this age group. Among a group of children with a respiratory specimen submitted to the diagnostic laboratory in whom a rhinovirus was the only identified pathogen, a majority were hospitalized.

Influence Of A Serotonin Transporter Promoter Polymorphism (5-Httlpr) On Corticolimbic Abnormalities In Bipolar Disorder An Integrated Genetics And Functional Mri Study, Maulik Shah Jun 2009

Influence Of A Serotonin Transporter Promoter Polymorphism (5-Httlpr) On Corticolimbic Abnormalities In Bipolar Disorder An Integrated Genetics And Functional Mri Study, Maulik Shah

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

Bipolar disorder (BD) is associated with abnormalities of the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC) and the amygdala, components of a corticolimbic neural system that subserves emotional regulation. The short s allele - as opposed to the long l allele - of a serotonin transporter promoter (5-HTTLPR) polymorphism is associated with more severe course features of BD and impaired functional connectivity between the sgACC and amygdala in healthy control (HC) individuals. This study tests the hypothesis that the s allele influences the dysfunction in the sgACC-amygdala neural system in BD. Twenty-six euthymic BD participants (17 s carriers, 9 ll) and 43 …
