Icons And Genre: The Affordances Of Livejournal.Com, Jennifer Grouling Cover, Tim Lockridge

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

[First paragraph]

The proliferation of Internet discourse - texts ranging from personal publishing platforms to comment-driven conversations - has led to the explosion of new genres. But will this explosion of genre also lead to the implosion of genre theory? In this paper, we seek to play with genre theory, to explore its relevance and test its limits by dealing with one particular type of online text: the blog. We ask not only what are the affordances of the blogging medium, but also what are the affordances of genre theory? What view of these texts does it offer us, and …

Eliza R. Snow's Poetry, Jill Mulvay Derr, Karen L. Davidson Jul 2009

Eliza R. Snow's Poetry, Jill Mulvay Derr, Karen L. Davidson

BYU Studies

As plural wife of two prophets and sister of a third, as an admired leader of women, and as an acknowledged voice of the Saints to the outside world, Eliza R. Snow was as close to the center of formative events and ideas as any woman of early Mormondom. More than her let- ters, discourses, or journals, her poems are comprehensive in their scope and as immediate as snapshots in their depiction of Mormon culture. The more than five hundred poems written by Snow capture the lived Mormonism of the nineteenth century, where revelation and history intersected and Latter-day Saints …

Occurrence Of Rumination: Effects Of Feedback Valence, Self-Disclosure, And Social Anxiety, Chun Han Chen Jul 2009

Occurrence Of Rumination: Effects Of Feedback Valence, Self-Disclosure, And Social Anxiety, Chun Han Chen

Student Work

Rumination, defined as repetitive and automatic thought reviewing of negative experiences, was the major object to explore. The research contemplated the mechanism facilitating the occurrence of ruminative thoughts. The hypothesis was that negative emotion from depreciated performance as well as the task requiring self-disclosure might instigate the intense discomfort within which rumination might occur. The researcher examined the potential interaction effect of Performance Feedback x Self-disclosure on rumination. In addition, stable individual characteristics of social anxiety might affect rumination. The statistical analysis explored the predictive effect of social anxiety on rumination. When the situation required one to disclose the self …

Sex Differences And Mechanisms Of Task-Specific Muscle Fatigue, Sandra K. Hunter Jul 2009

Sex Differences And Mechanisms Of Task-Specific Muscle Fatigue, Sandra K. Hunter

Exercise Science Faculty Research and Publications

Women can be less fatigable than men due to sex-related differences within the neuromuscular system that impact physiological adjustments during a fatiguing task. The involved mechanism(s) for the sex difference, however, is task specific. This review explores the novel hypothesis that variation of the task will alter the magnitude of the sex-difference in muscle fatigue and the contribution of involved mechanisms.

Applied Environmental Research

Cadmium contamination in cultivated soils and rice grain grown in Mae Sot District, Tak Province, Thailand was brought to public attention in 2003. Cadmium is considered highly toxic to plants, animals and microbes. However, some bacteria have developed the ability to detoxify cadmium and other heavy metals there by conferring resistance on these microbes. The aims of this research were to study the quantities and dispersion of viable soil bacteria and cadmium-resistant found in cadmium contaminated soils at Mae Sot District. Cadmium-resistant bacteria were isolated and further investigated for their cadmium-resistance ability. Cadmium and zinc concentrations were found in 15 …

Background—Metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been linked with an increased risk of developing cancer; however the association between MetS and cancer mortality remains less clear. Little research has focused on pre-cancer risk factors that may affect the outcome of treatment. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between MetS and all-cancer mortality in men. Methods—The participants included 33,230 men aged 20-88 years who were enrolled in the Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study and free of known cancer at baseline. Results—At baseline 28% of all the participants had MetS. During an average of 14 years followup there were a total …

Feeding Phishers, Nicholas J. Lynch Jul 2009

Feeding Phishers, Nicholas J. Lynch

Master's Theses

Phishing campaigns continue to deceive users into revealing their credentials, despite advancing spam filters, browser and toolbar warnings, and educational efforts. Recently, researchers have begun investigating how fake credentials --- or honeytokens --- can be used to detect phishing sites and protect users. BogusBiter, one such work, creates sets of honeytokens based on users' real credentials and sends them alongside real user submissions to phishing sites. In this paper, we present Phish Feeder, an anti-phishing tool which extends the BogusBiter honeytoken generation algorithm in order to create more realistic and authentic-looking credentials. Phish Feeder also employs a ``honeytoken repository'' which …

Optimal "Image-Based" Weighting For Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt Jul 2009

Optimal "Image-Based" Weighting For Energy-Resolved Ct, Taly Gilat Schmidt

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

This paper investigates a method of reconstructing images from energy-resolved CT data with negligible beam-hardening artifacts and improved contrast-to-nosie [sic] ratio (CNR) compared to conventional energy-weighting methods. Conceptually, the investigated method first reconstructs separate images from each energy bin. The final image is a linear combination of the energy-bin images, with the weights chosen to maximize the CNR in the final image. The optimal weight of a particular energy-bin image is derived to be proportional to the contrast-to-noise-variance ratio in that image. The investigated weighting method is referred to as “image-based” weighting, although, as will be described, the weights can …

The Dna Of An Argument: A Case Study In Legal Logos, Colin Starger Jul 2009

The Dna Of An Argument: A Case Study In Legal Logos, Colin Starger

All Faculty Scholarship

This Article develops a framework for analyzing legal argument through an in-depth case study of the debate over federal actions for post-conviction DNA access. Building on the Aristotelian concept of logos, this Article maintains that the persuasive power of legal logic depends in part on the rhetorical characteristics of premises, inferences, and conclusions in legal proofs. After sketching a taxonomy that distinguishes between prototypical argument logo (formal, empirical, narrative, and categorical), the Article applies its framework to parse the rhetorical dynamics at play in litigation over post-conviction access to DNA evidence under 42 U.S.C. § 1983, focusing in particular on …

How Color Affects Food Choices, Costa Magoulas Jul 2009

How Color Affects Food Choices, Costa Magoulas

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Color has a very strong influence in the hospitality industry. How much thought has been given to food choices because of color, and how influential is that on customers’ satisfaction of a food product? Staff that prepares food must understand how color and taste work together through presentation and eye appeal to create the WOW factor since customers eat with their eyes first. People associate different foods with different colors. When this perception changes it often has a detrimental effect on the customer’s perception of how that food should taste. Scientific information was gathered on the history of food, the …

Kosovo's Hope: Stories Of Renewal And Despair In An Independent Nation, Clay Lomneth, Michael Mason-D'Croz, Lindsay Demarco, Karen Schmidt, Vanessa Skocz, Shannon Smith, Kate Veik, Joel Gehringer, Bruce Thorson, Scott Winter

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Student Media

During spring break of 2008, five photojournalists, one reporter, one videographer and two faculty members spent eight days in the newly independent state of Kosovo. The purpose of the trip was to document issues of poverty. What greeted them was a town with litter everywhere; roads pocked with potholes; power outages because the power plant is archaic; and residents who are dying from the pollution because they live near the power plant. But what the journalists discovered was Kosovo's people have big smiles, warm hearts and plates of great, great food. … And they love Americans.

Taking notes is of uttermost importance in academic and commercial use and success. Different techniques for note-taking utilise different cognitive processes and strategies. This experimental study examined ways to enhance cognitive performance via different note-taking techniques. By comparing performances of traditional, linear style note-taking with alternative non-linear technique, we aimed to examine the efficiency and importance of different ways of taking notes. Twenty-six volunteer adult learners from an information management course participated in this study. Cognitive performance scores from a traditional linear note-taking group were compared with another group by using a commercially available non-linear note-taking technique. Both groups were …

Th2 Specific Immunity And Function Of Peripheral T-Cells Is Regulated By The P56lck Sh3 Domain, Margaret Mccoy Jul 2009

Th2 Specific Immunity And Function Of Peripheral T-Cells Is Regulated By The P56lck Sh3 Domain, Margaret Mccoy

Theses and Dissertations

Proper T-cell activation and effector function are essential for effective immunity. T-cell antigen receptor (TCR) signals are known to regulate the outcome of differentiation, but the mechanisms remain unclear. Recent work from our lab demonstrates that the Src family protein tyrosine kinase, p56Lck, is able to specifically link TCR signals to activation of the Mitogen Activated Protein Kinase (MAPK) pathway through the function of its SH3 domain. The MAPK pathway is known to be involved in T-cell activation downstream of TCR ligation and has previously been implicated in T-helper type 2 (Th2) effector function. We have utilized an Lck SH3 …

The Influence Of Environmental Factors On The Activity And Movement Of Bufo Nebulifer (Coastal Plain Toad) In A Disturbed Area, Crystal Salinas

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Toads in the family Bufonidae are poorly studied in southern Texas. Bufo nebulifir, a native bufonid, has been studied in its northern and southern range limits (east Texas and northern Mexico). South Texas' sub-tropical climate could impact the length of the activity period for B. nebulifer in yet unrecorded ways. This study resolves whether environmental factors correlate to Bufo nebulifer's activity, presence, and movement, using a mark-recapture method. The study was conducted for one year during February 2008 to March 2009. Environmental factors, especially rainfall and temperature were significantly correlated (PB. nebulifer . The active period of B. …
