Securing An Effective Voice For Citizens In Intergovernmental Administrative Decision Making, Maria J. D'Agostino
Securing An Effective Voice For Citizens In Intergovernmental Administrative Decision Making, Maria J. D'Agostino
Publications and Research
Intergovernmental administrative arrangements, often obscured from public view, are responsible for public decisions and their consequences. After European Union citizens expressed dissatisfaction with the disconnected administrative decision-making process by rejecting the European Constitution, the European Commission called for a period of reflection to develop tools and processes in order to involve citizens in the decision-making process.
This article examines collaborative efforts by the European Union to involve citizens in the shaping of national priorities. In-depth interviews were conducted with the heads of nonprofit organizations and staffers at nonprofits involved with organizing the European Citizens’ Consultations (ECC). All the organizations are …

Intracellular Targets Of Sphingosine-1-Phosphate, Graham Michael Strub
Intracellular Targets Of Sphingosine-1-Phosphate, Graham Michael Strub
Theses and Dissertations
The bioactive lipid mediator sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P) has emerged as a key regulator of a variety of important physiological functions, including cell growth, cell survival, cell motility, angiogenesis, lymphocyte trafficking, and mast cell function. S1P is formed by two different sphingosine kinases (SphKs) and binds to a family of 5 differentially expressed G-protein coupled receptors (S1PRs). The majority of research to date has focused on the activation of these receptors, but there is compelling evidence to suggest that S1P exerts intracellular functions independent of S1PRs. However no bona fide intracellular targets of S1P have been identified. In my dissertation, I have …

Motivation In Learners Of Japanese As A Foreign Language: An Analysis Of Profiles And Behaviors, Britainy Dawn Sorenson
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis examines motivation in English L1 learners of Japanese as a Foreign Language (JFL) by analyzing the students' responses to a questionnaire modeled after Dörnyei's research and an observational instrument called the Motivation Behaviors of Language Learning (MBLL) modeled after Guilloteaux and Dörnyei's (2008) research on motivational teaching strategies on behaviors. The data from the questionnaires were subjected to a discriminative analysis of students answers in relation to a high grade (receiving a B- or higher) or lower (C+ or lower) in their Japanese classes. A Factor Analysis of the data was also carried out. The discriminative results could …
Co-Occurrence With A Congeneric Species Predicts Life History And Morphological Diversification In The Mexican Livebearing Fish Poelicopsis Baenschi, Laura E. Scott
Theses and Dissertations
Understanding why some species coexist and others do not remains one of the fundamental challenges of ecology. While several lines of evidence suggest that closely related species are unlikely to occupy the same habitat because of competitive exclusion, there are many cases where closely related species do co-occur. Research comparing sympatric and allopatric populations of co-occurring species provides a framework to understand the role of phenotypic diversification in species coexistence. In this study I focus on the livebearing fish Poeciliopsis baenschi and ask if differences in phenotypic traits among populations can be explained by the presence or absence of the …
Glycosylation Modulates Cardiac Excitability By Altering Voltage-Gated Potassium Currents, Tara A. Schwetz
Glycosylation Modulates Cardiac Excitability By Altering Voltage-Gated Potassium Currents, Tara A. Schwetz
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Neuronal, cardiac, and skeletal muscle electrical signaling is achieved through the highly regulated activity of several types of voltage-gated ion channels to produce an action potential (AP). Voltage-gated potassium (Kv) channels are responsible for repolarization of the AP. Kv channels are uniquely and heavily glycosylated proteins. Previous reports indicate glycosylation modulates gating of some Kv channel isoforms; often, terminal sialic acid residues alter Kv channel gating. Here, we questioned whether alterations in glycosylation impact Kv channel gating, thus altering APs and cardiac excitability. ST3Gal-IV, a sialyltransferase expressed at uniform levels throughout the heart, adds …
The Hyphenated Playwright: A Speculation On Opportunities For An Emerging Mfa, Terry Davis
The Hyphenated Playwright: A Speculation On Opportunities For An Emerging Mfa, Terry Davis
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Few playwrights in the history of theater have earned a living from their writing. Certainly contemporary playwrights append other theatrical duties to their title to make a living. How, then, will the current crop of MFAs function in today's theater with their newly-minted degrees in dramatic writing? The author suggests that finding suitable role models could help clarify the post-graduate path and, using himself as a model, compares his own work and theatrical history to two working playwrights, Steven Dietz and Emily Mann. In those two examples, he finds encouraging possibilities as a writer as well as potential models for …
Writing The Warrior: A Latina Writes Latinas, Patricia S. Crespin
Writing The Warrior: A Latina Writes Latinas, Patricia S. Crespin
Theatre & Dance ETDs
This paper discusses the relationship between Latina writer and her warrior woman character on the stage. It defines the warrior woman from an extrapolated viewpoint and it reveals the motivations behind the inspiration to create a Latina woman who has many distinct attributes and nuances. It investigates the idea of a silent warrior and a vixen/victim warrior and how she comes to the stage through the mind of the writer and challenges the idea that even writer's who are aware of the stereotypical identities given to Latina women, use these distinctive identities for the sake of drama.

Ccm2 Molecular Signaling Pathway, Arianne J. Boylan
Ccm2 Molecular Signaling Pathway, Arianne J. Boylan
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) are a central nervous system vascular malformation often responsible for hemorrhagic strokes. Molecular genetic studies have identified three genes (CCMl KRITI, CCM2 Malcavernin, and CCM3 PDCDIO) and four possible loci responsible for the pathogenesis of these lesions. CCMl functions through integrin signaling and regulation of RACl activity and may be involved in the MAPK and JNK signaling cascades. We hypothesized that CCM2 likely functioned through the same pathways and that CCM3 expression is regulated by these stress-induced signaling cascades. We showed that CCM2 likely functions through the MAPK pathway as the mouse homolog, osmosensing scaffold protein …

An initial 32-question survey addressing HPV knowledge, beliefs and vaccine acceptability was completed, followed by an eight-minute video about HPV and the vaccine. An additional 11-question post assessment was …
Electrical Stimulation And Glutamate In The Hippocampus Of Epilepsy Patients, Gabriel Widi
Electrical Stimulation And Glutamate In The Hippocampus Of Epilepsy Patients, Gabriel Widi
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Electrical brain stimulation has been proposed as a promising treatment option for patients with medically resistant epilepsy disorder. Glutamate levels in the epileptogenic human hippocampus are elevated interictally and increase with seizures. Fifty Hz stimulation is a candidate therapeutic stimulation that is also used for clinical cortical mapping. We examined the effects of 50 Hz stimulation on glutamate efflux in the hippocampus of patients with medically refractory epilepsy. Subjects (n = 10) underwent intracranial EEG (icEEG) evaluation for possible therapeutic resection. Electrical stimulation was delivered through implanted hippocampal electrodes (n = 11) and microdialysate samples were collected every 2 mins. …
Palmitic Acid Increases Enac Expression And Contributes To Insulin Resistance In Renal Distal Tubule, Timmy Sullivan
Palmitic Acid Increases Enac Expression And Contributes To Insulin Resistance In Renal Distal Tubule, Timmy Sullivan
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Insulin resistance and obesity are two conditions associated with hypertension. Although the causes of hypertension are likely to be multifactorial, dysregulation of renal distal tubule sodium reabsorption may play a role. It has been shown that insulin increases sodium reabsorption in the distal tubule through the increased expression of epithelial sodium channels (ENaC); and obesity has been shown to cause insulin resistance in various tissues. Thiazolidinediones (TZDs) are insulin-sensitizing drugs whose use can be limited by a side effect of fluid-retention leading to edema and congestive heart failure. We set out to determine if the expression of ENaC in distal …

"Sparks From Law's Anvil": The Evolution Controversies In New Mexico, 1925-2008, Peter Incaudo
History ETDs
After attaining statehood in 1912, New Mexico witnessed an influx of American people, culture and controversies. This thesis tracks the development of controversies over the theory of evolution in the public schools of the state of New Mexico during the twentieth century and into the twenty-first century. Beginning with the states reaction to the 1925 Scopes trial, I discuss the reasons that the evolution controversy remained largely muted in 1920s New Mexico. Next, I examine the brief, but unique, 1927 evolution controversy sparked by a rumor of legislation to mandate the teaching of evolution. From there, I describe New Mexico's …
The 'Uncanny' And The Android, Noah Cooperstein
The 'Uncanny' And The Android, Noah Cooperstein
Foreign Languages & Literatures ETDs
The character of the android is found widely in film and literature. While she appears across the entire spectrum of genres, she most often makes her appearance in the uncanny text. This appearance is nearly always accompanied by some variation of the vision motif. Despite wide spread interest in both the Uncanny' and the android, to date, there is not a theory which accounts for the uncanny nature of the android and the prevalence of the vision motif in the android text. This paper will attempt to develop just such a theory. Any paper that addresses the 'Uncanny' must begin …

Participatory Development And Its Emergence In The Fields Of Community And International Development, Yossef Ben-Meir
Sociology ETDs
Since World War II, participatory development (PD), part of the alternative development movement, has evolved from a fringe approach to meeting basic human needs, to a globally recognized paradigm that is informing the strategic decisions regarding community and international development by governments and multi-lateral and indigenous NGOs, as well as management practices in the private sector. This is a study of 1) the evolution of this phenomenon since the 1940s in the context of historical events and dominant theories that inform most development (modernization-globalization and dependency-world-system), and 2) PD itself, including its basic features, methods, case examples, and roots in …

Salmonella Enterica Serovar Typhimurium Adhesion And Cytotoxicity During Epithelial Cell Stress Is Reduced By Lactobacillus Rhamnosus Gg, Kristen Burkholder, Arun K. Bhunia
Department of Food Science Faculty Publications
Background
Physiological stressors may alter susceptibility of the host intestinal epithelium to infection by enteric pathogens. In the current study, cytotoxic effect, adhesion and invasion of Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium (S. Typhimurium) to Caco-2 cells exposed to thermal stress (41°C, 1 h) was investigated. Probiotic bacteria have been shown to reduce interaction of pathogens with the epithelium under non-stress conditions and may have a significant effect on epithelial viability during infection; however, probiotic effect on pathogen interaction with epithelial cells under physiological stress is not known. Therefore, we investigated the influence of Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG and Lactobacillus gasseri …
The Effect Of Aging On The Innate Immune Response Of Vascular Smooth Muscle, Christopher Winterbottom
The Effect Of Aging On The Innate Immune Response Of Vascular Smooth Muscle, Christopher Winterbottom
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
As our understanding of atherosclerosis has become more sophisticated, a picture of the disease has emerged which emphasizes the role of inflammation in the pathogenesis of the disease, including signaling cascades mediated by toll-like receptors (TLRs). Data has also emerged suggesting that the process of aging plays an important role in atherogenesis, through pathways at least partially mediated by changes in the function of vascular smooth muscle cells. The purpose of this study was to elucidate the role that aging might play in the TLR-dependent innate immune response of vascular smooth muscle. Ex vivo cell and tissue culture models were …

Modeling Riparian Groundwater Depth As A Function Of River Flow For The Rio Grande At Albuquerque, Nm, Kelly Isaacson
Modeling Riparian Groundwater Depth As A Function Of River Flow For The Rio Grande At Albuquerque, Nm, Kelly Isaacson
Civil Engineering ETDs
Riparian corridor ecological health is strongly tied to river streamflow. As climate change threatens to significantly reduce monthly streamflows in semi-arid regions, riparian groundwater will be similarly reduced, impacting native and non-native flora. This paper presents a geographic information system (GIS) based approach for creating comprehensive riparian water surfaces from point surface water and groundwater measurements. These water surfaces are used to calculate depth to groundwater as a function of river discharge for the study reach in Albuquerque, NM, USA. A one dimensional hydraulic model, calibrated with USGS streamflow data, was used to interpolate streamflow measurements throughout the study reach …
Sphingosine Kinase 1 Inhibitor, A Novel Inducer Of Autophagy, Daniel Meza
Sphingosine Kinase 1 Inhibitor, A Novel Inducer Of Autophagy, Daniel Meza
Theses and Dissertations
Autophagy is the process of “cell self-eating” which has been implicated both in cell survival and cell death. Sphingosine kinase 1 (SphK1) regulates the intracellular balance between ceramide and sphingosine, bioactive lipids associated with cell death, and sphingosine-1-phosphate (S1P), whose actions are associated with survival and proliferation. Previous studies have implicated upregulation of SphK1 in the induction of autophagy. In this study, SK1-I, a SphK1 specific competitive inhibitor, induced autophagy in a concentration and time dependent manner in HCT116 colorectal carcinoma cells. This autophagic response was observed to be more intense in wild type p53 expressing HCT116 cells than in …

Dramatis Pupae: The Special Agency Of Puppet Performances, Casey Mráz
Dramatis Pupae: The Special Agency Of Puppet Performances, Casey Mráz
Theatre & Dance ETDs
Puppets have been used in performance by many cultures for thousands of years. Their roles in performance are constantly changing and evolving. Throughout the twentieth century there has been much contention between performance theorists over what defines a puppet. I aim toward a definition that emphasizes the puppet/audience and puppet/puppeteer relationship: Puppet: Any performing object that mechanizes human facial/bodily structures and features through movement and animates emotion. Puppets make us laugh because they are larger than life, playful and tend to employ comic mannerisms. Therefore, performing their sexuality, gender or race and placing them in violent situations magnifies their comic …

Eligibility For Organ Donation: A Medico-Legal Perspective On Defining And Determining Death, Jocelyn Downie, Matthew R. Kutcher, Chantelle Rajotte, Alison Shea
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
Purpose: In the context of post-mortem organ donation, there is an obvious need for certainty regarding the legal definition and determination of death, as individuals must be legally pronounced dead before organs may be procured for donation. Surprisingly then, the legal situation in Canada with regard to the definition and determination of death is uncertain. The purpose of this review is to provide anesthesiologists and critical care specialists with a medico-legal perspective regarding the definition and determination of death (particularly as it relates to non-heart-beating donor protocols) and to contribute to ongoing improvement in policies, protocols, and practices in this …
