Synthesis And Biochemical Studies On Sulfated Monomers Of Low Molecular Weight Lignins, Jenson Verghese Jul 2009

Synthesis And Biochemical Studies On Sulfated Monomers Of Low Molecular Weight Lignins, Jenson Verghese

Theses and Dissertations

Anticoagulants are used as the first line therapy for management and prevention of thrombotic disorders. Thrombin and factor Xa have been the prime targets for regulation of the coagulation cascade. In this work, a small library of 17 benzofuran derivatives were synthesized and screened against thrombin and factor Xa. The derivatives that displayed inhibitory potential were docked on the exosite-II of factor Xa using a docking protocol that was developed in our research group. These compounds were based on the β-5 structural unit found in the oligomer -'CDSO3‘, which was prepared in our lab and was found to inhibit both …

Development Of A Mangrove Quality Index In Tampa Bay, Florida, Monetta S. Wilson Jul 2009

Development Of A Mangrove Quality Index In Tampa Bay, Florida, Monetta S. Wilson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Mangroves are an important resource. They provide a breeding ground for commercially and recreationally important fish, protect shorelines from erosion and improve coastal water quality. Historically, mangroves were undervalued, leading to a loss of 35% of mangroves worldwide and 44% in Tampa Bay due to anthropogenic stressors. Efforts to protect and restore mangroves have led to a variety of management programs. In Tampa Bay the main management program is the Tampa Bay Estuary Program (TBEP). The program has identified the need for simple and easy to use assessment tools to track mangrove quality and aid in mangrove quality. There are …

Evolution And Maintenance Of Plumage Polymorphism: The Case Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sula Sula), Patricia Carvalho Baiao Jul 2009

Evolution And Maintenance Of Plumage Polymorphism: The Case Of The Red-Footed Booby (Sula Sula), Patricia Carvalho Baiao

Dissertations

The red-footed booby (Sula sula) is considered one of the most polymorphic seabirds, with three recognized major adult plumage types: (1) white; (2) white-tailed brown; and (3) brown, and several degrees of intermediates. The ratio of these color morphs varies among populations, with the white morph typically predominating. However, there are a few populations that present an inversed ratio of color morphs, such as Isla Europa in the Indian Ocean and the Galapagos archipelago, with the white-tailed brown or brown morphs predominating. I studied natural populations of red-footed boobies from three geographic locations, namely, the Galapagos archipelago, Johnston Atoll in …

The Role Of Education On Awareness Of Ammunition-Dismantling Risks, Brunilda Zenelaga

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

The blasts from an ammunition dismantling factory in Gërdec, Albania, an accident caused by untrained employees at the facility, resulted in deaths and injuries and damaged homes for factory workers and nearby villagers in March 2008. This article suggests that training employers and workers to follow necessary safety procedures, as well as raising village awareness of the dangers of these ammunitions facilities, will help prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.

Prostheses For Pachyderm Landmine Survivors, Cisr Journal Jul 2009

Prostheses For Pachyderm Landmine Survivors, Cisr Journal

The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction

Many times the only landmine survivors considered candidates for prostheses are humans; however, there are also pachyderm victims in need of assistance. Along the Thai-Burmese border, a heavily mined area, elephants that are used for logging, as well as wild elephants, often fall victim to landmines. Lacking other options and unable to care for the animals in this condition, their caretakers frequently opt to end the animals’ lives.

Asymptotic Dynamics Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew J. Leverentz '08, Chad M. Topaz, Andrew J. Bernoff Jul 2009

Asymptotic Dynamics Of Attractive-Repulsive Swarms, Andrew J. Leverentz '08, Chad M. Topaz, Andrew J. Bernoff

All HMC Faculty Publications and Research

We classify and predict the asymptotic dynamics of a class of swarming models. The model consists of a conservation equation in one dimension describing the movement of a population density field. The velocity is found by convolving the density with a kernel describing attractive-repulsive social interactions. The kernel’s first moment and its limiting behavior at the origin determine whether the population asymptotically spreads, contracts, or reaches steady state. For the spreading case, the dynamics approach those of the porous medium equation. The widening, compactly supported population has edges that behave like traveling waves whose speed, density, and slope we calculate. …

Predictive Archaeological Modeling Using Gis-Based Fuzzy Set Estimation: A Case Study In Woodford County, Kentucky, Philip B. Mink, John Ripy, Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt Jul 2009

Predictive Archaeological Modeling Using Gis-Based Fuzzy Set Estimation: A Case Study In Woodford County, Kentucky, Philip B. Mink, John Ripy, Keiron Bailey, Ted H. Grossardt

Kentucky Transportation Center Faculty and Researcher Publications

Analytic predictive archaeological models can have great utility for state Departments of Transportation, but it is difficult to model the likelihood of prehistoric settlement using geographical proxy predictor variables because of the complexity of how settlement choices were actually made, and the complex interaction between these variables using GIS. In many cases classic statistical modeling approaches require too much data to be useful. This research reports on a preliminary predictive model that combines Spatial Analyst and fuzzy logic modeling to capture expert archaeological knowledge and convert this into predictive surface. A test area was defined in Woodford County, KY and …

Discriminating Pulmonary Hypertension Caused By Monocrotaline Toxicity From Chronic Hypoxia By Near-Infrared Spectroscopy And Multivariate Methods Of Analysis, Simon Duri, Robert C. Molthen, Chieu D. Tran Jul 2009

Discriminating Pulmonary Hypertension Caused By Monocrotaline Toxicity From Chronic Hypoxia By Near-Infrared Spectroscopy And Multivariate Methods Of Analysis, Simon Duri, Robert C. Molthen, Chieu D. Tran

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A new method has been developed for the determination of tissue pathology caused by chronic hypoxia and monocrotaline toxicity. The method is based on the use of near-infrared (NIR) spectrophotometry to measure spectra of lung tissue from normal chronic hypoxia (CH) and monocrotaline (MCT) models of pulmonary hypertension (PH), followed by analysis using multivariate methods, that is, principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares (PLS). Synergistic use of NIR with the PCA/PLS method makes it possible, for the first time, not only to divide different lung tissue samples into their respective groups (normal, CH, and MCT) but also to …

Portrayal Of Older People In Disney Live Action Films From The 1990s And 2000s, Jennifer Gail Martin Jul 2009

Portrayal Of Older People In Disney Live Action Films From The 1990s And 2000s, Jennifer Gail Martin

Theses and Dissertations

Children as young as three years old are scared of the idea of growing old, and negative stereotypes about older people have started to develop by the time children enter elementary school. Negative stereotyping of older characters has been found to be prevalent in all forms of media. Because children use media to figure out who they are and what the world is like, this study looks at some of the most popular films of the past two decades aimed toward children. This study is a content analysis of older major and minor characters from the 60 top grossing Disney …

Subdivided By Faith? An Historical Account Of Evangelicals And The City, Mark T. Mulder, James K.A. Smith Jul 2009

Subdivided By Faith? An Historical Account Of Evangelicals And The City, Mark T. Mulder, James K.A. Smith

University Faculty Publications and Creative Works

In an echo of Michael Emerson and Christian Smith’s study of evangelicals and the racialized society (detailed vividly in Divided by Faith), Mark T. Mulder and James K. A. Smith attempt to trace the history and literature concerning evangelicals and their relationship to the city. While there exists an interesting literature about general urban antipathy in the U.S., the authors contend religion remains a salient and under-examined component within that phenomenon. This paper calls for more theologically-nuanced studies regarding evangelicals, anti-urban bias, and geographical habits. Mr. Mulder is Assistant Professor of Sociology and Mr. Smith is Associate Professor of Philosophy …

Environmental Remediation Of Tnt Using Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Metal, Erica Echols Jul 2009

Environmental Remediation Of Tnt Using Nanoscale Zero-Valent Iron Metal, Erica Echols

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research focused on the use of nanoscale zero-valent iron (NZVI) to remediate trinitrotoluene (TNT). Zero-valent iron has demonstrated effective degradation of TNT, however, these particles themselves have significant problems in treating sorbed phase TNT in the aerobic environment. This research was comprised of four areas: degradation studies of neat nano-iron with aqueous TNT, degradation studies of nanoiron emulsion with aqueous TNT, characterization of TNT in Vieques, Puerto Rico sediment, and Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) technique interface with HPLC. Both neat and emulsion NZVI studies showed TNT degradation. More degradation was seen in studies using fresher iron. The results from …

Teaching Children With Reactive Attachment Disorder: A Review Of The Literature, Shawn Travis Arnold Jul 2009

Teaching Children With Reactive Attachment Disorder: A Review Of The Literature, Shawn Travis Arnold

Special Education Masters Program Theses

Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD) has been examined by the psychological community for many years, but only in recent years has it entered the realm of education and recognizing students with RAD has occurred. Disagreements continue to take place over what types of assessments or interventions may work for children with RAD. Often children with RAD are not diagnosis [sic] because the symptoms reflect other dysfunctional behaviors and teachers reject these students as unwilling to accept instruction. This paper is a literature review of professional articles available with bearing on teaching children with RAD. In addition, this article presents behaviors of …

The Effects Of Obesity And Surgically-Induced Weight Loss On Exercise Ventilation: Influence Of Central Adiposity And Serum Leptin, Jeffrey Herrick Jul 2009

The Effects Of Obesity And Surgically-Induced Weight Loss On Exercise Ventilation: Influence Of Central Adiposity And Serum Leptin, Jeffrey Herrick

Theses and Dissertations

Truncal adiposity impairs ventilation in obese adults by altering normal ventilatory mechanics. Leptin, an inflammatory adipocytokine, is elevated in obesity and has been shown to alter ventilatory responses to exercise. Leptin’s bioavailability appears to be regulated by its soluble receptor (LRe), which is reduced in obesity. Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery (RYGBS) is a weight loss intervention that reduces total fat mass and improves several obesity related co-morbidities including pulmonary dysfunction. The purpose of this study was to first evaluate the differences between ventilatory responses to carbon dioxide (VE/VCO2 slope) during progressive treadmill walking in morbidly obese and normal weight females. …

Genetic Structuring At A Fine Scale In The Russet-Crowned Motmot (Momotus Mexicanus) In A Tropical Dry Forest In Central Mexico, Dolores Reyes, Raúl E. Alcalá, Dulce Arias, Marcela Osorio-Beristain Jul 2009

Genetic Structuring At A Fine Scale In The Russet-Crowned Motmot (Momotus Mexicanus) In A Tropical Dry Forest In Central Mexico, Dolores Reyes, Raúl E. Alcalá, Dulce Arias, Marcela Osorio-Beristain

Western North American Naturalist

Because of their high dispersal abilities, birds are expected to manifest marked genetic structuring only at relatively large geographic scales. However, it is not well known how factors like nest site fidelity in a largely resident species could limit gene flow and increase genetic structuring in birds. In this study we use RAPD markers to estimate genetic structuring in a strongly sedentary species of the American tropics, the Russet crowned Motmot (Momotus mexicanus), within a tropical dry forest in central Mexico. Genetic structuring was assessed among 3 populations separated by a mean distance of only 25 km. We …

Range Expansion Of The Collared Peccary In New Mexico: Potential For Interactions Between Historically Separate Subspecies, Louis J. Lamit, Marguerite N. Hendrie Jul 2009

Range Expansion Of The Collared Peccary In New Mexico: Potential For Interactions Between Historically Separate Subspecies, Louis J. Lamit, Marguerite N. Hendrie

Western North American Naturalist

The collared peccary (Tayassu tajacu) is undergoing range expansion in the southwestern United States. Here we report sightings of the collared peccary from locations outside the known ranges of either of the subspecies, T. t. sonoriensis and T. t. angulatus, in south central New Mexico. Sightings include multiple individuals of different ages. This indicates that the collared peccary is expanding into previously unoccupied areas between the documented ranges of the 2 subspecies. We suggest that the possibility of gene flow between the 2 historically separate subspecies may have important evolutionary consequences.
