Cultural Mapping With A View Towards Discipleship In Cayambe, Ecuador, Kathryn L. Northey Dec 2009

Cultural Mapping With A View Towards Discipleship In Cayambe, Ecuador, Kathryn L. Northey

Senior Honors Theses

God is a global God. He has a desire for all the nations to hear His Word. This is realized through discipleship. To effectively create disciples, it is necessary that the missionary understands the culture. Cultural mapping is a systematic way to observe and grow to understand a culture. It is beneficial to see how a model is applied to grasp this concept. This thesis examines the example of the culture of Cayambe, Ecuador, to see cultural mapping at work in an actual ministry. It will use the four layers of culture as presented by Donald K. Smith in his …

Identification Of Eurycea Using Cytochrome B, Karis A. Myers Dec 2009

Identification Of Eurycea Using Cytochrome B, Karis A. Myers

Senior Honors Theses

Genomic sequencing is a powerful tool that has many applications for research, one of which is in the field of taxonomy and the identification of species. This thesis discusses the mitochondrial gene cytochrome b and its utility in population genetics and identification of larval amphibians. The development of the Polymerase Chain Reaction and primers are an integral part of the modern DNA sequencing process. The Polymerase Chain Reaction is used to amplify a target DNA sequence, and the protocol for this procedure must be optimized for the specific sequence of target DNA. Primers must also be designed and modified for …

Ecophysiological Mechanisms Underlying Aspen To Conifer Succession, William J. Calder Dec 2009

Ecophysiological Mechanisms Underlying Aspen To Conifer Succession, William J. Calder

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis includes three studies. The first study examined how reductions in light availability and changes in soil chemistry that occur as conifers establish in aspen stands, differentially affects the regeneration success of aspen and conifers. We found that aspen were more sensitive to changes in light and soil then subalpine fir. For aspen, reduced light and conifer influenced soils significantly reduced height, biomass, photosynthesis and the production of secondary defense compounds. Subalpine fir seedlings were significantly reduced in photosynthesis, biomass and R:S under lower light conditions but showed no differences in physiology or growth when grown on the contrasting …

Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors And Innate Immunity In Septic Shock, Joseph Bertsche Dec 2009

Histone Deacetylase Inhibitors And Innate Immunity In Septic Shock, Joseph Bertsche

Theses and Dissertations

Innate immunity depends on pattern recognition receptors, which recognize pathogen associated molecular patterns (PAMPS), such as Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4), which detects the gram-negative bacterial toxin, lipopolysaccharide. Engagement of TLR4 by LPS sets off a cascade ending in the activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines and interferon-β (IFN-β) which alerts the host to the infection. However, these responses can be mal-adaptive, especially in the context of bacterial sepsis, where a "cytokine storm" results in death of the host. Pharmacological modulation of these responses may therefore be a promising treatment modality. Inhibition of classic pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-1β and TNF-α has been …

United States Environmental Protection Agency: Publications

Ecological risk assessments typically are organized using the processes of planning (a discussion among managers, stakeholders, and analysts to clarify ecosystem management goals and assessment scope) and problem formulation (evaluation of existing information to generate hypotheses about adverse ecological effects, select assessment endpoints, and develop an analysis plan). These processes require modification to be applicable for integrated assessments that evaluate ecosystem management alternatives in terms of their ecological, economic, and social consequences. We present 8 questions that define the steps of a new process we term integrated problem formulation (IPF), and we illustrate the use of IPF through a retrospective case …

College Students And Stress Management: Utilizing Biofeedback And Relaxation Skills Training, Shannon Jones Anstead Dec 2009

College Students And Stress Management: Utilizing Biofeedback And Relaxation Skills Training, Shannon Jones Anstead

Theses and Dissertations

This study was undertaken to evaluate the effectiveness of biofeedback and relaxation skills training to help alleviate college students' stress symptoms. Data was collected from 659 full-time college students who attended a total of 1,170 biofeedback sessions over the course of two years. Results of the study indicated that the top three stress-related symptoms students experienced were (a) feeling overwhelmed, (b) feeling anxious, and (c) difficulty concentrating. Furthermore, the top three stressors rated by students were (a) too much to do, (b) homework, and (c) classes and school. In addition, the top three coping strategies utilized by students to manage …

Gamma Motor Neurons Express Distinct Genetic Markers At Birth And Require Muscle Spindle-Derived Gdnf For Postnatal Survival, Neil A. Shneider, Meghan N. Brown, Courtney A. Smith, James Pickel, Francisco J. Alvarez Dec 2009

Gamma Motor Neurons Express Distinct Genetic Markers At Birth And Require Muscle Spindle-Derived Gdnf For Postnatal Survival, Neil A. Shneider, Meghan N. Brown, Courtney A. Smith, James Pickel, Francisco J. Alvarez

Neuroscience, Cell Biology & Physiology Faculty Publications

Background: Gamma motor neurons (γ-MNs) selectively innervate muscle spindle intrafusal fibers and regulate their sensitivity to stretch. They constitute a distinct subpopulation that differs in morphology, physiology and connectivity from α-MNs, which innervate extrafusal muscle fibers and exert force. The mechanisms that control the differentiation of functionally distinct fusimotor neurons are unknown. Progress on this question has been limited by the absence of molecular markers to specifically distinguish and manipulate γ-MNs. Recently, it was reported that early embryonic γ-MN precursors are dependent on GDNF. Using this knowledge we characterized genetic strategies to label developing γ-MNs based on GDNF receptor expression, …

The Design Brief: Conceptual Tool For Visual Resolution Of Professional Design Problems, Jason Andrew Neal Dec 2009

The Design Brief: Conceptual Tool For Visual Resolution Of Professional Design Problems, Jason Andrew Neal

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I show how I have integrated the design brief concept with my art philosophy to help guide the exploration and visual resolution of three academic visual projects. The design brief is the most significant project management tool I have added to my design philosophy and production approach during my graduate studies. It has not changed the art I create, but rather has changed how I plan for and manage the production of my art. The brief consists of a series of questions that I can apply to all design decisions to make sure those decisions remain consistent …

Seeing Through The Clouds, Sandra Louise Bakke Dec 2009

Seeing Through The Clouds, Sandra Louise Bakke

Theses and Dissertations

A memoir written in vignettes shows how the writer's childhood, family, and faith connect the past with the present. In searching for words to express memory, the writing uncovers and discovers what needs to be said. The selected narratives attest to events and influences that reveal the ever hovering shadow of the past as I see it. Through the clouds of memory, the stories mold themselves until they become the truth, a portrait of the author's self identity as daughter, mother, wife, Christian, and storyteller.
