Indirect Effects Of Invasive Species:Community Effects Of Invasive Aquatic Plant Control And Direct And Indirect Effects Of Non-Native Peacock Bass, Ekaterina Kovalenko Aug 2009

Indirect Effects Of Invasive Species:Community Effects Of Invasive Aquatic Plant Control And Direct And Indirect Effects Of Non-Native Peacock Bass, Ekaterina Kovalenko

Theses and Dissertations

Biological invasions are one of the main factors responsible for the imperiled status of freshwater ecosystems, but much remains to be learned about their indirect effects on native communities. The first part of this dissertation examines community effects of long-term efforts to selectively control invasive Eurasian watermilfoil. Results of the first study show that native plants immediately recolonized treated areas and habitat complexity was unaffected. Fish community was not influenced by invasive plant control. Macroinvertebrate communities were highly variable and part of their variability could be explained by plant community attributes. Both fish and macroinvertebrates used invasive watermilfoil, which emphasizes …

Mobility And Population Change In Northeast Mississippi: An Object-Based Seriation Of Projectile Points As A Relative Paleodemographic Indicator, Jason L. Edmonds Aug 2009

Mobility And Population Change In Northeast Mississippi: An Object-Based Seriation Of Projectile Points As A Relative Paleodemographic Indicator, Jason L. Edmonds

Theses and Dissertations

Archaeological considerations of mobility have primarily focused on the differences in and among the kinds or degrees of mobility itself, rather than addressing the underlying issue of why human settlement patterns were or are mobile. The focus of this study is to address such questions within Darwinian evolutionary theory. Using the concepts of bet-hedging, as used in biology, and waste, as used in archaeology, it is argued that mobility was selectively favored for its population limiting properties. Relative changes in the numbers of projectile points in each assigned class, ordered chronologically by seriation, were taken to indicate relative population change …

X-Ray Crystallographic Studies Of Complexes Of Human Myeloperoxidase With Hydroxamic Acids And Nitrite, Corneliu Sologon Aug 2009

X-Ray Crystallographic Studies Of Complexes Of Human Myeloperoxidase With Hydroxamic Acids And Nitrite, Corneliu Sologon

Open Access Dissertations

Compound I of myeloperoxidase is capable of both one-electron oxidation and two-electron oxidation reactions. Halides and pseudohalides are the substrates for the two-electron oxidation and other compounds including a large variety of aromatic alcohols and amines can be oxidized via the single electron oxidation pathway. To investigate the catalytic mechanism of myeloperoxidase four structures of complexes of myeloperoxidase were solved. Two of them are complexes with hydroxamic acids and the other two are complexes with nitrite. Hydroxamic acids (salicylhydroxamic acid and benzylhydroxamic acid) can function as structural analogues for the aromatic alcohol and amine substrates of myeloperoxidase. The crystal structures …

Executive Perks: Compensation And Corporate Performance In China, Ilan Alon, Pattarin Adithipyangkul, Tianyu Zhang Aug 2009

Executive Perks: Compensation And Corporate Performance In China, Ilan Alon, Pattarin Adithipyangkul, Tianyu Zhang

Faculty Publications

Many studies have examined CEO compensation in developed countries, where a long tradition of disclosure renders data readily available. In emerging economies, particularly in China, where market-based compensation is a relatively new phenomenon, there are few studies of CEO compensation. In addition, information on the use of non-cash compensation is almost absent. Building on the general literature on CEO compensation, and Chinese economic and management studies, this article singularly contributes to the extant literature by (1) examining the motivational determinants of CEO perk compensation, on the one hand, and (2) exploring the relative contribution of perks to performance. We anticipate …

Stable Carbon Isotope Evidence Of Ancient Maya Agriculture At Tikal, Guatemala, Richard Lee Burnett

Theses and Dissertations

Stable carbon isotope analyses of the humin fraction of the soil organic matter were conducted on more than 160 soil profiles from Tikal, Guatemala. The profiles were collected from near areas associated with the earthworks of Tikal; an ancient ditch and parapet construction hypothesized to have formed ancient boundaries of the polity. In addition to the isotope analyses, the physical and chemical characteristics of the horizons were determined. Maize, a C4 plant, formed an integral part of the ancient Maya diet and is the only known C4 plant cultivated by the Maya. Prior to and subsequent to the ancient Maya …

The Role Of Recn In Stationary Phase Mutagenesis In Bacillus Subtilis, Lauren E. Johnson, Katherine R. Ona, Eduardo A. Robleto, Ronald E. Yasbin

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Here, we examine mutagenic programs that are independent of growth, such aspects of the evolutionary process are novel and have been implicated in the formation of cancers in animal cells and the acquisition of antibiotic resistance in animal pathogens. Adaptive or stationary phase mutagenesis is a genetic program to in increase diversity in cells under conditions of stress whereby cells escape non-dividing conditions. Previous research has shown that recombination functions are required to generate mutations that promote growth in Escherichia coli cells starved for carbon. This project tests the hypothesis that recombination functions are required for the generation of mutations …

Role Of Ecdysone Signaling In Fat Body Remodeling, Marsha Kristel Bernardo, N. Bond, Allen G. Gibbs Aug 2009

Role Of Ecdysone Signaling In Fat Body Remodeling, Marsha Kristel Bernardo, N. Bond, Allen G. Gibbs

Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program (UROP)

Climate change is fundamentally connected to animal development and survival, and the life history of an organism must be coordinated with predictable seasonal changes of the environment. Climate change affects the life cycle of plants, a major food source for insects. If photoperiod, the primary environmental queue that insects utilize to determine the proper emergence time, and food availability becomes out of sync, many populations of insects and other animals could be threatened. Understanding animal development can provide insight into this issue and could provide clues that may help the scientific community predict how insect populations may respond to climate …

The Effects Of Snap-25 Deficits And Pre-Natal Nicotine In A Mouse And Adhd Model, Jarrod Adcock, Michaela Haney, D. Leonard, Andrea Allan Aug 2009

The Effects Of Snap-25 Deficits And Pre-Natal Nicotine In A Mouse And Adhd Model, Jarrod Adcock, Michaela Haney, D. Leonard, Andrea Allan

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

It has been recognized that the foundation of most, if not all, complex disease processes, particularly neuropsychiatric disorders, is due to the interactions between subtle genetic deficits and environmental insults. One of the most studied neuropsychiatric disorders shown to contribute from both heritable-related factors and environmental stressor sensitivity is Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Of the heritable issues involved, meta-analysis of genetic linkage studies has shown that the SNARE protein SNAP-25, is one of many possible proteins that may provide answers to the genetic component. In contrast to this genetic factor, studies have shown that prenatal nicotine exposure causes a …

Copper Toxicity And Accumulation: Physiology, Chemistry, And Molecular Biology, Jonathan Blanchard Aug 2009

Copper Toxicity And Accumulation: Physiology, Chemistry, And Molecular Biology, Jonathan Blanchard

Open Access Dissertations

Our knowledge of aquatic Cu toxicity has increased greatly over the past several years culminating with the incorporation of a model (the Biotic Ligand Model (BLM)) into the regulatory framework which allows for the site specific adjustment of water quality criteria based on water chemistry. However, our understanding of Cu toxicity in the aquatic environment is limited mostly to freshwater (FW). Because of this limited knowledge, this dissertation set out to examine the affect of salinity on Cu toxicity and accumulation across salinities from FW to sea water (SW). First, this work examined tissue specific Cu accumulation in five salinities …

Interleukin-21 Induces Apoptosis Of Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphomas Via Activation Of The Stat3 - C-Myc Intracellular Signaling Pathway, Kristopher A. Sarosiek Aug 2009

Interleukin-21 Induces Apoptosis Of Diffuse Large B Cell Lymphomas Via Activation Of The Stat3 - C-Myc Intracellular Signaling Pathway, Kristopher A. Sarosiek

Open Access Dissertations

Interleukin-21 (IL-21), a recently discovered member of the IL-2 cytokine family, has been shown to have diverse regulatory effects on B cells including the induction of antibody secretion, differentiation, or apoptosis depending on the cell milieu and activation status. However, the effects of IL-21 on B cell neoplasms such as diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) are largely unknown. Our research uncovered the widespread expression of the IL-21 receptor (IL-21R) in B cell lymphomas including DLBCL and that IL-21 stimulation resulted in potent phosphorylation of STAT1 and 3 and weak activation of STAT5. However, our findings also showed that treatment …

Molecular Aspects Of Nitrogen Metabolism In Fishes, Tammy Laberge Macdonald Aug 2009

Molecular Aspects Of Nitrogen Metabolism In Fishes, Tammy Laberge Macdonald

Open Access Dissertations

Molecular aspects of nitrogen metabolism in vertebrates is an interesting area of physiology and evolution to explore due to the different ways in which animals excrete nitrogenous waste as they transition from an aquatic to a terrestrial lifestyle. Two main products of nitrogen metabolism in fishes are ammonia and urea. Ammonia is produced during protein catabolism and build up of ammonia is toxic. Some aquatic vertebrates convert ammonia into a less toxic compound urea via de novo synthesis through the ornithine-urea cycle (O-UC). Five enzymes are involved in the O-UC: carbamoyl phosphate synthetase (CPS), ornithine carbamoyl transferase (OCT), argininosuccinate synthetase …

An Analysis Of Netcdf-Fastbit Integration And Primitive Spatial-Temporal Operations, David Marks

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

A process allowing for the intuitive use of SQL queries on dense multidimensional data stored in Network Common Data Format (netCDF) files is developed using advanced bitmap indexing provided by the FastBit bitmap indexing tool. A method for netCDF data extraction and FastBit index creation is presented and a geospatial Range and pseudo-KNN search based on the haversine function is implemented via SQL. A two step filtering algorithm is shown to greatly enhance the speed of these geospatial queries, allowing for extremely efficient processing of the netCDF data in bitmap indexed form.
