Laterality Enhances Cognition In Australian Parrots, Maria Magat, Culum Brown
Laterality Enhances Cognition In Australian Parrots, Maria Magat, Culum Brown
Sentience Collection
Cerebral lateralization refers to the division of information processing in either hemisphere of the brain and is a ubiquitous trait among vertebrates and invertebrates. Given its widespread occurrence, it is likely that cerebral lateralization confers a fitness advantage. It has been hypothesized that this advantage takes the form of enhanced cognitive function, potentially via a dual processing mechanism whereby each hemisphere can be used to process specific types of information without contralateral interference. Here, we examined the influence of lateralization on problem solving by Australian parrots. The first task, a pebble-seed discrimination test, was designed for small parrot species that …

Incorporating Remotely Sensed Tree Canopy Cover Data Into Broad Scale Assessments Of Wildlife Habitat Distribution And Conservation, Sebastián Martinuzzi, Lee A. Vierling, William A. Gould, Kerri T. Vierling, Andrew T. Hudak
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Remote sensing provides critical information for broad scale assessments of wildlife habitat distribution and conservation. However, such efforts have been typically unable to incorporate information about vegetation structure, a variable important for explaining the distribution of many wildlife species. We evaluated the consequences of incorporating remotely sensed information about horizontal vegetation structure into current assessments of wildlife habitat distribution and conservation. For this, we integrated the new NLCD tree canopy cover product into the US GAP Analysis database, using avian species and the finished Idaho GAP Analysis as a case study. We found: (1) a 15-68% decrease in the extent …

Developing A Community Clinic To Address The Health Needs As Experienced By A Small Rural Village In Sierra Leone, Doris K. Acton
Developing A Community Clinic To Address The Health Needs As Experienced By A Small Rural Village In Sierra Leone, Doris K. Acton
Theses and Graduate Projects
Developing countries experience a disproportionate amount of health care inequities due to extreme poverty, lack of education, minimal resources and marginalization from health care services. Additionally, barriers such as access, availability and affordability prevent people from seeking care. Development of community based clinics can help to address the health disparities that the people of these countries often experience. Utilizing Madeleine Leininger's Culture Care Theory and the Sunrise Enabler provide a framework on which to develop clinics and health care programs in ways that are culturally congruent and acceptable. This paper addresses the health needs of Manonkoh, a small village in …

How Scholars Work: Panning For Gold In Libraries, Judith M. Nixon, Marianne Ryan
How Scholars Work: Panning For Gold In Libraries, Judith M. Nixon, Marianne Ryan
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
How do liberal arts scholars work? For example, where do they get their ideas? When beginning a research project, do they start with a Google search or the library's home page? How and when do scholars utilize libraries and library resources—especially library-funded databases? How has research changed since the advent of the World Wide Web? These are questions that the social science and humanities librarians at Purdue University Libraries have been asking. To begin to find answers, we invited selected faculty members and students to a How Scholars Work series. This article summarizes their comments.
Automatic Exposure Control And Estimation Of Effective System Noise In Diffuse Fluorescence Tomography, Dax L. Kepshire, Hamid Dehghani, Frederic Leblond, Brian W. Pogue
Automatic Exposure Control And Estimation Of Effective System Noise In Diffuse Fluorescence Tomography, Dax L. Kepshire, Hamid Dehghani, Frederic Leblond, Brian W. Pogue
Dartmouth Scholarship
A diffuse fluorescence tomography system, based upon time-correlated single photon counting, is presented with an automated algorithm to allow dynamic range variation through exposure control. This automated exposure control allows the upper and lower detection levels of fluorophore to be extended by an order of magnitude beyond the previously published performance and benefits in a slight decrease in system effective noise. The effective noise level is used as a metric to characterize the system performance, integrating both model-mismatch and calibration bias errors into a single parameter. This effective error is near 7% of the reconstructed fluorescent yield value, when imaging …
Vitamin B6 Metabolism And Regulation Of Pyridoxal Kinase, Amit Gandhi
Vitamin B6 Metabolism And Regulation Of Pyridoxal Kinase, Amit Gandhi
Theses and Dissertations
Pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP) is the cofactor for over 140 vitamin B6 (PLP)-dependent enzymes that are involved in various metabolic and biosynthetic pathways. Pyridoxal kinase (PL kinase) and pyridoxine 5’-phosphate oxidase (PNP oxidase) are the two key enzymes that metabolize nutritional forms of vitamin B6, including pyridoxal (PL), pyridoxine (PN), and pyridoxamine (PM) to the active cofactor form, PLP. Disruption of the PLP metabolic pathway due to mutations in PNP oxidase or PL kinase result in PLP deficiency, which is implicated in several neurological pathologies. Several ingested compounds are also known to result in PLP deficiency with concomitant neurotoxic effects. How …

Developing The Nomological Network Of Perceived Corporate Affinity For Technology: A Three Essay Dissertation, David Earl Fleming
Developing The Nomological Network Of Perceived Corporate Affinity For Technology: A Three Essay Dissertation, David Earl Fleming
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Technology is changing the face of both the sales and service domains. Honebein and Cammarano (2006) note that properly implemented self-service technologies serve dual purposes of decreasing firm overhead costs, while simultaneously engaging the customer in a way encourages the co-create of value for both parties. To get these benefits stakeholders must be willing to adopt and use the technologies that are available.
Traditionally, this has lead to the research question "How do firms do this?" However, according to a recent article by Woodall, Colby and Parasuraman (2007), consumers are now demanding more technology-based options and becoming more technologically savvy. …
Nocturnal Fish Distribution, Feeding And Predation Risk In Relation To A Mangrove-Seagrass Ecotone, Neil Hammerschlag
Nocturnal Fish Distribution, Feeding And Predation Risk In Relation To A Mangrove-Seagrass Ecotone, Neil Hammerschlag
Open Access Dissertations
The combined effects of food availability and predation risk on fish foraging behavior have been investigated via both laboratory and field experiments, primarily in temperate, freshwater systems and during daylight hours. In contrast, relatively little attention has been directed towards fish foraging decisions along subtropical shorelines, which serve as nursery grounds for a variety of economically important fishes, as well as at night, when many species emerge from refuges to feed. The mangrove-seagrass ecotone and adjacent seagrass beds constitute nocturnal feeding grounds for fish secondary-tertiary consumers. In subtropical Biscayne Bay, Florida (USA), I investigated the influences of food and risk …
A Pedagogical And Educational Examination Of The First Month At The Piano By Mana-Zucca, Laura Helene Keith
A Pedagogical And Educational Examination Of The First Month At The Piano By Mana-Zucca, Laura Helene Keith
Open Access Dissertations
The First Month at the Piano by Mana-Zucca, published in 1935, is a pioneering piano method to be taught by rote, supporting sound before sight learning theories, to the pre-school student. It differs from the Suzuki method in that The First Month at the Piano uses short, repetitive patterns, intrinsic to the Edwin Gordon Music Learning Theory. The First Month at the Piano has been compared to educational theories and has been found to follow Lev Vygotsky's theory of scaffolding and Jerome Bruner's principles of structure, readiness for learning, and motivation. The First Month at the Piano has been shown …
Functional Deficits In Motor Terminals And Their Mitochondria In Mouse Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Khanh Tu Nguyen
Functional Deficits In Motor Terminals And Their Mitochondria In Mouse Models Of Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Khanh Tu Nguyen
Open Access Dissertations
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease in which the upper and lower motor neurons die. Most studies aimed at elucidating the cause of this disease have focused on the motor neuron cell body. However, recent work has suggested that the disease may begin in motor nerve terminals. The experiments described in Chapters 2-4 of this dissertation studied functional defects in motor nerve terminals of mice expressing mutant human superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1-G93A, SOD1-G85R), models of familial ALS. In Chapter 2, the proximal hind limbs of SOD1-G93A mice were subjected to varying durations of a tourniquet-induced ischemia/reperfusion injury to …
