Bolivia: Novel Rocket Stoves, Mike Naleid, Erik Reiersen Sep 2009

Bolivia: Novel Rocket Stoves, Mike Naleid, Erik Reiersen

ETHOS Technical Reports

Upon arrival in Cochabamba on May 17th 2009, Mike Naleid and Erik Reiersen primarily took on the task of two large projects during their stay, both dealing with the design of new wood burning ecological stoves. Before leaving for CEDESOL in May, they were in contact with David Whitfield and briefly discussed his ideas for a new rocket stove that would be used for making chicha, a native drink of the Andes Mountain regions. Considering the pot size for a typical batch of chicha is around 500L, the design of the stove consisted of the same principles for a small …

Why Horses? Why Not Horses? : Equine-Facilitated Therapy As It Applies To Mental Health, Katie Ann Worms Sep 2009

Why Horses? Why Not Horses? : Equine-Facilitated Therapy As It Applies To Mental Health, Katie Ann Worms

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study explored the general benefits of equine-facilitated therapy and for whom this treatment is appropriate. Utilizing interviews of ten equine therapists and therapeutic riding instructors, who have an advanced degree in the areas of social work, psychology, education or therapeutic recreation, as well as at least one year of professional equine experience, this study explored the participants' perception of the use of equine-facilitated therapies as it applies to mental health treatment. Secondly, through this perspective, the study looked to identify a "preferred client profile" that participants felt would be best suited to engage in equine-facilitated therapy (EFT). The findings …

Rumen Fermentation Pattern Of Dairy Heifers Fed Restricted Amounts Of Low, Medium, And High Concentrate Diets Without And With Yeast Culture, G. J. Lascano, A. J. Heinrichs Sep 2009

Rumen Fermentation Pattern Of Dairy Heifers Fed Restricted Amounts Of Low, Medium, And High Concentrate Diets Without And With Yeast Culture, G. J. Lascano, A. J. Heinrichs

Dairy Science

Restricted feeding and highconcentratediets are potential strategies for growing dairyheifers. Ruminal manipulation with additives such as Saccharomyces cerevisiaeyeastculture (YC) has been shown to alter digestibility when added to this type of diet. An experiment was conducted to investigate the ruminal fermentation and in situ digestibility of diets with 3 different levels of forage to concentrate (F:C) fed at restricted intake without and with YC addition. Three cannulated post-pubertal Holstein heifers (age 18.0 ± 1.2 months; body weight 449.6 ± 19.7 kg) were feddiets consisting of corn silage as the sole forage source in a 3 period (35-day) Latin square …

Ontogenetic Patterns Of Agonistic Behavior In A Guild Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, Cy L. Mott, Donald W. Sparling Sep 2009

Ontogenetic Patterns Of Agonistic Behavior In A Guild Of Larval Ambystomatid Salamanders, Cy L. Mott, Donald W. Sparling

Publications

Agonistic behavior is a common feature of larval amphibians inhabiting temporary ponds. Given the temporally staggered sequence of hatching by pond-breeding amphibians, ontogenetic patterns of aggression can influence coexistence if larvae of certain species or ages are subject to increased aggression. To determine whether aggression changes through larval ontogeny, we observed agonistic behavior of Ambystoma opacum, Ambystoma tigrinum, and Ambystoma maculatum at four stages of development spanning the larval period. We tracked aggression rates among individual larvae to determine whether previous success, in the form of increased aggression, facilitated success in subsequent contests. All species exhibited distinct ontogenetic …

Seed Germination, Foliar Vestiture And Stem Anatomical Features Of Urena Lobata L. (Malvaceae): An Ethnobotanical And/Or Ethnomedicinal Plant Genetic Resource In Nigeria, Gordian C. Obute, Tessy O. Nwaru Sep 2009

Seed Germination, Foliar Vestiture And Stem Anatomical Features Of Urena Lobata L. (Malvaceae): An Ethnobotanical And/Or Ethnomedicinal Plant Genetic Resource In Nigeria, Gordian C. Obute, Tessy O. Nwaru

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The seed germination enhancement, foliar vestiture studies and stem anatomical features of Urena lobata L. were investigated against the backdrop of its ethnobotanical and ethnomedicinal applications. Results show that the plant branches profusely thus yielding much of the vegetative parts used for various purposes. Germination of the seeds was enhanced by mechanical scarification and sulphuric acid treatments and the acid treatment elicited greater effects than the mechanical scarification. Leaf morphology especially the type and depth of lobes varied within the species while stellate and sharply pointed trichomes were observed on the abaxial and adaxial foliar surfaces. The possible roles of …

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder-Associated Depression: Evidence For Reductions In The Levels Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In A Mouse Model, Kevin Caldwell, S. Sheema, Rodrigo D. Paz, Sabrina Samudio-Ruiz, Mary Laughlin, Nathan Spence, Michael Roehlk, Sara Alcon, Andrea Allan Sep 2009

Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder-Associated Depression: Evidence For Reductions In The Levels Of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor In A Mouse Model, Kevin Caldwell, S. Sheema, Rodrigo D. Paz, Sabrina Samudio-Ruiz, Mary Laughlin, Nathan Spence, Michael Roehlk, Sara Alcon, Andrea Allan

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with an increased incidence of depressive disorders in patient populations. However, the mechanisms that link prenatal ethanol exposure and depression are unknown. Several recent studies have implicated reduced brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels in the hippocampal formation and frontal cortex as important contributors to the etiology of depression. In the present studies, we sought to determine whether prenatal ethanol exposure is associated with behaviors modeling depression, as well as with reduced BDNF levels in the hippocampal formation and/or medial frontal cortex, in a mouse model of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). Compared to control adult …

Mapping Race: Historicizing The History Of The Color-Line, Ryan Irwin Sep 2009

Mapping Race: Historicizing The History Of The Color-Line, Ryan Irwin

History Faculty Scholarship

This study examines scholarship about the global color-line. It unfolds in two sections. The first traces how understandings of race and racism were encoded within university environments in the mid-twentieth century. The second shows how this epistemology influenced early academic comparisons of the United States and South Africa in the 1980s and why the literature diversified in the post-apartheid era.

The Other Forgotten War: Understanding Atrocities During The Malayan Emergency, Christi Siver Sep 2009

The Other Forgotten War: Understanding Atrocities During The Malayan Emergency, Christi Siver

Political Science Faculty Publications

In this chapter, I briefly outline the dependent variable in this case, the various units actively engaged in combat in Malaya between 1948 and 1952. I then explore the most common explanations for the Scots Guards’ actions and reveal why they are not helpful in explaining why other units did not similarly kill civilians. To better understand this variation, I explore three alternative explanations: Did the military socialize units in the laws of war and appropriate behavior toward civilians? Did government leaders encourage units to kill civilians? Finally, did different units’ subcultures make them more likely to kill civilians? I …

Justice In Time, Robert C. Hockett Sep 2009

Justice In Time, Robert C. Hockett

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Challenges raised by the subject of intergenerational justice seem often to be thought almost uniquely intractable. In particular, apparent conflicts between the core values of impartiality and efficiency raised by a large and still growing number of intertemporal impossibility results derived by Koopmans, Diamond, Basu & Mitra, and others have been taken to foreclose fruitful policy assessment done with a view to the distant future.

This Essay aims to dispel the sense of bewilderment, pessimism and attendant paralysis that afflicts intertemporal justice assessment. It works toward that end by demonstrating that the most vexing puzzles raised by questions of intergenerational …

Wilderness Serendipity: Planning And Assessing Learning During An Experiential Field Course, Larkin A. Powell, Andrew J. Tyre, Scott E. Hygnstrom, David A. Wedin, P. R. Hanson, Mark S. Kuzila, James B. Swinehart

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Experiential learning opportunities promote skill in problem-solving and critical thinking, but they require unique assessment methods because traditional approaches are difficult to implement in the field. We have conducted a study tour course involving a canoe trip in a wilderness area in northern Minnesota since 2004. Here, we describe how we developed our course's learning experiences, ensured the learning experiences materialized, and assessed the student learning objectives. Proper planning can result in valuable, spontaneous learning experiences. We used a student journal, field-based quiz, and participation grade to effectively assess the breadth of student learning that was inherent in our course. …
