Impairments In Attention In Occasionally Snoring Children: An Event-Related Potential Study., Maria E. Barnes, Elizabeth A. Huss, Krista N. Garrod, Eric Van Ray, Ehab Dayyat, David Gozal, Dennis L. Molfese

Faculty and Staff Scholarship

Objective: To determine whether minimal snoring is benign in children. Procedure: 22 rarely snoring children (mean age = 6.9 years, 11 females) and age- and sex-matched controls participated in an auditory oddball task wearing 128-electrode nets. Parents completed the Conners Parent Rating Scales–Revised Long (CPRS–R:L). Results: Snorers scored significantly higher on four CPRS-R:L subscales. Stepwise regression indicated that two ERP variables from a region of the ERP that peaked at 844 msec post-stimulus onset predicted CPRS-R:L Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) Index scores. Conclusions: Occasional snorers, according to parental report, do exhibit ADHD-like behaviors. Basic sensory processing is longer than …

Deriving Optimal Composite Scores: Relating Observational/Longitudinal Data With A Primary Endpoint, Rhonda Ellis Sep 2009

Deriving Optimal Composite Scores: Relating Observational/Longitudinal Data With A Primary Endpoint, Rhonda Ellis

Theses and Dissertations

In numerous clinical/experimental studies, multiple endpoints are measured on each subject. It is often not clear which of these endpoints should be designated as of primary importance. The desirability function approach is a way of combining multiple responses into a single unitless composite score. The response variables may include multiple types of data: binary, ordinal, count, interval data. Each response variable is transformed to a 0 to1 unitless scale with zero representing a completely undesirable response and one representing the ideal value. In desirability function methodology, weights on individual components can be incorporated to allow different levels of importance to …

The Properties Of Planning: An Evolving Landscape, Alexandra Flynn, Donald Leffers Sep 2009

The Properties Of Planning: An Evolving Landscape, Alexandra Flynn, Donald Leffers

Journal of Law and Social Policy

The theme of this special volume is “Challenging Traditional Notions of Property in Land Use Planning.” Property in the common law tradition is conceived as a right to something, whether physical or not, that is disconnected from the object or idea itself. Property interests are almost always hierarchical and exclusionary. An emerging body of property law scholarship is challenging the basic tenets of the discipline. For example, Nicole Graham argues that property law must be rooted in a time and place, and Sarah Keenan suggests that property law is a form of spatial and temporal order that can function as …

Planning As Property: Uncovering The Hidden Racial Logic Of A Municipal Nuisance By-Law, Heather Dorries Sep 2009

Planning As Property: Uncovering The Hidden Racial Logic Of A Municipal Nuisance By-Law, Heather Dorries

Journal of Law and Social Policy

In her landmark essay, Whiteness as Property, Cheryl Harris powerfully demonstrates how racial identity and property claims are co-produced in law. Through a genealogy of law starting with American slave law, Harris reveals how whiteness has evolved from a form of racial identity into a legally acknowledged and protected form of property. In this article I apply Harris’ framework to an analysis of two by-laws passed by the City of Brantford (Ontario) in 2008, in order to reveal a hidden racial logic within the statutory powers vested in municipalities. By analyzing these by-laws, as well as the litigation which followed, …

Learning With The Kids, Daniel A. Bell Sep 2009

Learning With The Kids, Daniel A. Bell

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

China, as everybody knows, is not a politically free country. There are constraints on political activity and many social critics fall afoul of the system. The foreign press often reports on those cases, leading to the impression that it’s impossible to do any good outside of official channels. What is less well known, however, is that some areas of social life that were once politically taboo – such as the plight of migrant workers and environmental concerns – are now openly discussed in the Chinese media. There are also a growing number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) that do good work …
