Differential Reliance On Feelings In The Present Vs. The Future (Or Past): Affect As A Decision Making System Of The Present, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Michel Tuan Pham Oct 2009

Differential Reliance On Feelings In The Present Vs. The Future (Or Past): Affect As A Decision Making System Of The Present, Hanwen Hannah Chang, Michel Tuan Pham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

We posit that compared to the cognitive system, the affective system of judgment and decision making is relatively more engaged in the present. Specifically, we hypothesize that even if their accessibility is held constant, affective feelings are weighted more heavily in consumer judgments and decisions set in the present than in equivalent judgments and decisions set in the future or in the past. Consistent with this proposition, results from six experiments show that (a) compared to a more distant future, a nearer future increases consumers’ relative preferences for options that are superior in terms of integral affect over options that …

Distance Metric Learning From Uncertain Side Information With Application To Automated Photo Tagging, Lei Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Jianke Zhu, Nenghai Yu Oct 2009

Distance Metric Learning From Uncertain Side Information With Application To Automated Photo Tagging, Lei Wu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Rong Jin, Jianke Zhu, Nenghai Yu

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

Automated photo tagging is essential to make massive unlabeled photos searchable by text search engines. Conventional image annotation approaches, though working reasonably well on small testbeds, are either computationally expensive or inaccurate when dealing with large-scale photo tagging. Recently, with the popularity of social networking websites, we observe a massive number of user-tagged images, referred to as "social images", that are available on the web. Unlike traditional web images, social images often contain tags and other user-generated content, which offer a new opportunity to resolve some long-standing challenges in multimedia. In this work, we aim to address the challenge of …

Using The Sixth Edition Of The Apa Manual: A Guide For Students, John H. Hummel, Mark A. Whatley, David M. Monetti, Deborah S. Briihl, Katharine S. Adams

Georgia Educational Researcher

Teachers, school counselors, and educational leaders should learn, or become familiar with, APA style because of their important role as consumers and authors of research. By consuming and sharing the results of research in a standardized format, educators are able to efficiently share best practices to a broad audience which in turn helps other educators meta-analyze results and use those findings to coordinate their efforts in improving student learning. The sixth edition of the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (2010) provides the means by which students and educators can communicate. This manual contains considerable information for the student …

A Surprise Triggered Adaptive And Reactive (Star) Framework For Online Adaptation In Non-Stationary Environments, Truong-Huy Dinh Nguyen, Tze-Yun Leong Oct 2009

A Surprise Triggered Adaptive And Reactive (Star) Framework For Online Adaptation In Non-Stationary Environments, Truong-Huy Dinh Nguyen, Tze-Yun Leong

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

We consider the task of developing an adaptive autonomous agent that can interact with non-stationary environments. Traditional learning approaches such as Reinforcement Learning assume stationary characteristics over the course of the problem, and are therefore unable to learn the dynamically changing settings correctly. We introduce a novel adaptive framework that can detect dynamic changes due to non-stationary elements. The Surprise Triggered Adaptive and Reactive (STAR) framework is inspired by human adaptability in dealing with daily life changes. An agent adopting the STAR framework consists primarily of two components, Adapter and Reactor. The Reactor chooses suitable actions based on predictions made …

Flexor Reflex Decreases During Sympathetic Stimulation In Chronic Human Spinal Cord Injury, Mark Kevin Garrison, Brian D. Schmit Oct 2009

Flexor Reflex Decreases During Sympathetic Stimulation In Chronic Human Spinal Cord Injury, Mark Kevin Garrison, Brian D. Schmit

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

A better understanding of autonomic influence on motor reflex pathways in spinal cord injury is important to the clinical management of autonomic dysreflexia and spasticity in spinal cord injured patients. The purpose of this study was to examine the modulation of flexor reflex windup during episodes of induced sympathetic activity in chronic human spinal cord injury (SCI). We simultaneously measured peripheral vascular conductance and the windup of the flexor reflex in response to conditioning stimuli of electrocutaneous stimulation to the opposite leg and bladder percussion. Flexor reflexes were quantified using torque measurements of the response to a noxious electrical stimulus …

Modulation Of Mitochondrial Bioenergetics In The Isolated Guinea Pig Beating Heart By Potassium And Lidocaine Cardioplegia: Implications For Cardioprotection, Mohammed Aldakkak, David F. Stowe, Edward J. Lesnefsky, James S. Heisner, Qun Chen, Amadou K.S. Camara Oct 2009

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Mitochondria are damaged by cardiac ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury but can contribute to cardioprotection. We tested if hyperkalemic cardioplegia (CP) and lidocaine (LID) differently modulate mitochondrial (m) bioenergetics and protect hearts against I/R injury. Guinea pig hearts (n = 71) were perfused with Krebs Ringer's solution before perfusion for 1 minute just before ischemia with either CP (16 mM K+) or LID (1 mM) or Krebs Ringer's (control, 4 mM K+). The 1-minute perfusion period assured treatment during ischemia but not on reperfusion. Cardiac function, NADH, FAD, m[Ca2+], and superoxide (reactive oxygen species) were assessed at baseline, during the 1-minute perfusion, …

Aims/hypothesis: TNF-alpha levels are increased in obesity and type 2 diabetes. The regulation of TNF-alpha converting enzyme (TACE) and its inhibitor, tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 3 (TIMP3), in human type 2 diabetes is unknown.

Methods: We examined TACE/TIMP3 regulation: (1) in lean and obese normal glucose tolerant (NGT) individuals and in type 2 diabetes patients; (2) following 6 h of lipid/saline infusion in NGT individuals; and (3) in cultured human myotubes from lean NGT individuals incubated with palmitate. Insulin sensitivity was assessed by a euglycaemic clamp and TACE/TIMP3 was evaluated by confocal microscopy, RT-PCR, western blotting and an in vitro …

Water Bathing Alters The Speed–Accuracy Trade-Off Of Escape Flights In European Starlings, Bo Brilot, L Asher, M Bateson Oct 2009

Water Bathing Alters The Speed–Accuracy Trade-Off Of Escape Flights In European Starlings, Bo Brilot, L Asher, M Bateson

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Birds of most species regularly bathe in water, but the function of this behaviour is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that water bathing is important in feather maintenance, and hence should enhance flight performance. We manipulated European starlings', Sturnus vulgaris, access to bathing water in a 2 × 2 design: birds were housed in aviaries either with or without water baths for a minimum of 3 days (long-term access) before being caught and placed in individual cages either with or without water baths for a further 24 h (short-term access). We subsequently assessed the speed and accuracy of escape flights …

4-H agents face increasing demands to support traditional 4-H programs while adding new programming for new audiences. Without increased funding to hire additional staff, it becomes essential to streamline the facilitation of activities. To address this situation, the Union County 4-H program implemented fair management software to create efficiencies in the facilitation of the 4-H county fair and regional livestock show. The new software has reduced staff labor by over 60%, reduced pre-show preparation by 34%, and improved problem solving and increased accuracy.

Trials And Triumphs: Piloting A Web Conference System To Deliver Blended Learning Across Multiple Sites, Marty Laubach, Laura J. Little

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Research

Barriers to classroom-based education such as high gas prices, inclement weather, and job and family requirements often make travel to campus more difficult for people who want to continue their educations (Fletcher, 2008). The promise of synchronous tools such as Wimba LiveClassroom can provide a cost-effective alternative to a real-time classroom experience by allowing students to attend a class wherever they are, thus allowing a classroom experience despite geographic barriers. Indeed, other reports have also indicated that hybrid learning can result in increased student outcomes when compared to traditional classroom learning (Brunner, 2006; McFarlin, 2008). To attempt to overcome these …

41 | Horbat ‘Uza: The 1991 Excavations Volume I: The Early Periods, Nimrod Getzov, Ronny Lieberman-Wander, Howard Smithline, Danny Syon

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This is the first of two volumes documenting the IAA excavations at this site in the ‘Akko Plain. This volume presents the early periods, including occupation during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic to the Chalcolithic periods, with significant pottery and flint finds, then a substantial EB IA settlement, an Intermediate Bronze Age settlement and an ephemeral presence in the Late Bronze Age, as evidenced by the pottery finds. The site lay in ruins throughout the Iron Age until an extensive resettlement in the Persian period and a small Hellenistic-period presence.
