Donnie Darko And The Messianic Motif, Kevin V. Dodd Oct 2009

Donnie Darko And The Messianic Motif, Kevin V. Dodd

Journal of Religion & Film

Savior or deliverer movies are a staple in today’s theaters. Often they are action/adventure films where they tend to substitute action for character development. In the first background section I will use an ancient Hindu epic to demonstrate that this is by no means novel. But there have also been richer films that are psychologically, religiously, and often politically, savvy. Many have been examined in this journal, including Cool Hand Luke, One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest, and the highly provocative Breaking the Waves. The last especially points to a particular category of savior film, the Messianic, …

Versatile Reactive Navigation, Robert P. Burton, Luther A. Tychonievich, Louis P. Tychonievich

Faculty Publications

Most autonomous mobile agents operate in a highly constrained environment. Despite significant research, existing solutions are limited in their ability to handle heterogeneous constraints within highly dynamic or uncertain environments. This paper presents a novel maneuver selection technique suited for both 2D and 3D environments with highly dynamic maneuvering constraints and multiple mobile obstacles. Agents may have any arbitrary set of nonholonomic control variables; maneuvers can be constrained by a broad class of function inequalities, including time-dependent constraints involving nonlinear relationships between controlled and agent-state variables. The resulting algorithm has been implemented to run in real time using only a …

Federalism, Forum Shopping, And The Foreign Injury Paradox, Elizabeth T. Lear Oct 2009

Federalism, Forum Shopping, And The Foreign Injury Paradox, Elizabeth T. Lear

William & Mary Law Review

This Article explores the contours of state regulatory power in the foreign injury context. The Supreme Court has long declined to question forum choice in domestic cases, apparently concluding that any other response would be inconsistent with our federalism. But move the injury offshore and the judicial deference to state regulatory supremacy evaporates. Federal judges subject forum choice in transnational tort actions to exacting scrutiny, routinely dismissing such claims on forum non conveniens grounds with no examination of the state interests at stake. This Article first considers whether the offshore nature of a foreign injury diminishes or even extinguishes traditional …

Structures For Environmental Action, Katherine Bunting-Howart, Avi Brisman, Willett Kempton, Dorothy C. Holland, Peggy F. Bartlett Oct 2009

Structures For Environmental Action, Katherine Bunting-Howart, Avi Brisman, Willett Kempton, Dorothy C. Holland, Peggy F. Bartlett

Southern Anthropologist

This article develops a typology of what we term “structures for action”—strategies, mechanisms, and means—used by local environmental groups to facilitate actions such as lifestyle shifts, civic protest, and environmental preservation. Based on data from nineteen groups in several states, we distinguish between internal structures that facilitate action for members of the groups and external structures that facilitate action among nonmembers and other groups. Within both internal and external structures, we identify three dimensions: knowledge, meaning, and praxis. Our typology of structures for action is designed to stimulate further research and to be useful for environmental groups, as well as …

(Ad)Dressing Masculinity: Male Cosplay Performance At Fan Cons, Jonathan Broussard Oct 2009

(Ad)Dressing Masculinity: Male Cosplay Performance At Fan Cons, Jonathan Broussard

Southern Anthropologist

The costumed science fiction, fantasy gaming, or anime fan, dressed as his favorite character, holds a place within the popular imagination as a “true” representation of the fan community, creating an image of this exotic other. That generalized image also contains stereotypes about male fans as being “unmanly” with regard to the understood conception of masculinity in the United States in general and the South in particular. I suggest that through cosplay, the practice of costumed role-play, male fans perform their masculinity in such a way that both acknowledges and subverts the dominant American conceptions while appropriating their power to …

An Error Threshold Criterion For Singular Value Decomposition Modes Extracted From Piv Data, Brenden P. Epps Oct 2009

An Error Threshold Criterion For Singular Value Decomposition Modes Extracted From Piv Data, Brenden P. Epps

Link Foundation Ocean Engineering and Instrumentation Fellowship Reports

Singular value decomposition (SVD) is often used as a tool to analyze particle image velocimetry (PIV) data. However, experimental error tends to corrupt higher SVD modes, in which the root mean square velocity value is smaller than the experimental error. Therefore, we suggest that the threshold criterion, sk [ ffiffiffiffiffiffiffi DT p ; can be used as a rough limit of the validity of SVD modes extracted from experimental data (where sk is the singular value of mode k, D and T are the number of data sites and time steps, respectively, and is the root mean square PIV error). …

Intracellular Bacteria Encode Inhibitory Snare-Like Proteins., Fabienne Paumet, Jordan Wesolowski, Alejandro Garcia-Diaz, Cedric Delevoye, Nathalie Aulner, Howard A Shuman, Agathe Subtil, James E Rothman

Department of Microbiology and Immunology Faculty Papers

Pathogens use diverse molecular machines to penetrate host cells and manipulate intracellular vesicular trafficking. Viruses employ glycoproteins, functionally and structurally similar to the SNARE proteins, to induce eukaryotic membrane fusion. Intracellular pathogens, on the other hand, need to block fusion of their infectious phagosomes with various endocytic compartments to escape from the degradative pathway. The molecular details concerning the mechanisms underlying this process are lacking. Using both an in vitro liposome fusion assay and a cellular assay, we showed that SNARE-like bacterial proteins block membrane fusion in eukaryotic cells by directly inhibiting SNARE-mediated membrane fusion. More specifically, we showed that …

Comparative Life Cycles And Life Histories Of North American Rhabdias Spp. (Nematoda: Rhabdiasidae): Lungworms From Snakes And Anurans, Gabriel J. Langford, John J. Janovy Jr.

John J. Janovy, Jr. Publications

The present study used experimental infections to compare the life cycles and life histories of 6 Rhabdias spp. infecting snakes and anurans. Free-living development of anuran lungworms was primarily limited to heterogonic reproduction, and females utilized matricidal endotoky exclusively, whereas snake lungworms primarily reproduced homogonically and, when heterogonic reproduction occurred, females used a combination of releasing eggs and matricidal endotoky. Infective snake lungworms survived for longer periods in fresh water compared to anuran worms. Infective anuran lungworms penetrated into the skin of frogs and toads; few infections resulted from per os infections. In contrast, snake lungworms were unable to penetrate …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications

Fifty-two fecal samples from the Plateau pika, Ochotona curzoniae, collected in the Haibei Area, Qinghai Province, China, were examined for the presence of coccidia (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae). Five distinct morphotypes, all Eimeria species, were distinguished based on the structure of their sporulated oocysts. Three of these included Eimeria banffensis, Eimeria calentinei, and Eimeria cryptobarretti, all of which have been described previously from other Ochotona species. We also studied 2 morphotypes that we feel have sufficient qualitative and quantitative characters to distinguish them from all previously described species; herein, we identify them as putative new species. Eimeria qinghaiensis …

Alteration Of The Gastrointestinal Microbiota Of Mice By Edible Blue-Green Algae, H. E. Rasmussen, I. Martínez, J. Y. Lee, J. Walter

Department of Nutrition and Health Sciences: Faculty Publications

Aims: To characterize the effect of edible blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) on the gastrointestinal microbiota of mice. Methods and Results: C57BL⁄6J mice were fed a diet supplemented with 0% or 5% dried Nostoc commune, Spirulina platensis, or Aphanizominon flos-aquae (w⁄w) for 4 weeks. Molecular fingerprinting of the colonic microbiota using denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis revealed that administration of N. commune induced major alterations in colonic microbiota composition, while administration of S. platensis or A. flos-aquae had a more subtle impact. Community profile analysis revealed that administration of N. commune did not reduce microbial diversity indices of the colonic microbiota. …

Airway Smooth Muscle As An Immunomodulatory Cell., Gautam Damera, Omar Tliba, Reynold A. Panettieri, Jr. Oct 2009

Airway Smooth Muscle As An Immunomodulatory Cell., Gautam Damera, Omar Tliba, Reynold A. Panettieri, Jr.

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

Although pivotal in regulating bronchomotor tone in asthma, airway smooth muscle (ASM) also modulates airway inflammation in asthma. ASM myocytes secrete or express a wide array of immunomodulatory mediators in response to extracellular stimuli, and in chronic severe asthma, increases in ASM mass may also render the airway irreversibly obstructed. Although the mechanisms by which ASM secretes cytokines and chemokines are shared with those regulating immune cells, there exist unique ASM signaling pathways that may provide novel therapeutic targets. This review provides an overview of our current understanding of the proliferative as well as synthetic properties of ASM.

Transcriptional Regulation Of Cytokine Function In Airway Smooth Muscle Cells., Deborah Clarke, Gautam Damera, Maria B. Sukkar, Omar Tliba Oct 2009

Transcriptional Regulation Of Cytokine Function In Airway Smooth Muscle Cells., Deborah Clarke, Gautam Damera, Maria B. Sukkar, Omar Tliba

College of Pharmacy Faculty Papers

The immuno-modulatory properties of airway smooth muscle have become of increasing importance in our understanding of the mechanisms underlying chronic inflammation and structural remodeling of the airway wall in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). ASM cells respond to many cytokines, growth factors and lipid mediators to produce a wide array of immuno-modulatory molecules which may in turn orchestrate and perpetuate the disease process in asthma and COPD. Despite numerous studies of the cellular effects of cytokines on cultured ASM, few have identified intracellular signaling pathways by which cytokines modulate or induce these cellular responses. In this review we …

Deep Rationality: The Evolutionary Economics Of Decision Making, Douglas T. Kenrick, Vladas Griskevicius, Jill M. Sundie, Norman P. Li, Jessica Yexin Li, Steven L. Neuberg Oct 2009

Deep Rationality: The Evolutionary Economics Of Decision Making, Douglas T. Kenrick, Vladas Griskevicius, Jill M. Sundie, Norman P. Li, Jessica Yexin Li, Steven L. Neuberg

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

What is a “rational” decision? Economists traditionally viewed rationality as maximizing expected satisfaction. This view has been useful in modeling basic microeconomic concepts, but falls short in accounting for many everyday human decisions. It leaves unanswered why some things reliably make people more satisfied than others, and why people frequently act to make others happy at a cost to themselves. Drawing on an evolutionary perspective, we propose that people make decisions according to a set of principles that may not appear to make sense at the superficial level, but that demonstrate rationality at a deeper evolutionary level. By this, we …
