A Defense Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Gregory Dolin Oct 2009

A Defense Of Embryonic Stem Cell Research, Gregory Dolin

All Faculty Scholarship

On November 21, 2007, sensational scientific developments were reported by major newspapers, both in the United States and abroad. The media reported a new breakthrough in the area of stem cell research. According to two articles published in Science and Cell (both highly respected scientific journals), two teams of scientists were able to “reprogram” adult stem cells into embryonic stem cells, without actually having to experiment on embryos. The discovery was immediately hailed by the White House and other opponents of embryonic stem cell research. The New York Times gushed that the “stem cell wars” may be at an end. …

Scared Sick? Predator-Pathogen Facilitation Enhances The Exploitation Of A Shared Resource, Ricardo A. Ramirez, W E. Snyder Oct 2009

Scared Sick? Predator-Pathogen Facilitation Enhances The Exploitation Of A Shared Resource, Ricardo A. Ramirez, W E. Snyder

Biology Faculty Publications

Resource use generally increases with greater consumer diversity, an effect often attributed to resource partitioning. Pathogens and predators are two classes of consumer that exhibit differences in ecologically important traits (e.g., size, resource acquisition strategy, foraging location) that could lead to complementary effects on shared prey/hosts. To examine this possibility, we manipulated diversity among a community of predators and pathogens that together attack an herbivorous beetle, Leptinotarsa decemlineata, and measured resulting effects on herbivore suppression and resulting plant damage. We found that herbivore mortality increased, and plant damage decreased, when more natural enemy species were present. However, closer examination revealed …

A Novel Protocol For Inter-Vehicular Video Transmission, Kevin O'Flynn, Hrishikesh Venkataraman, Gabriel-Miro Muntean

9th. IT & T Conference

Over the recent years, there has been an extraordinary increase in the demand for real-time multimedia and infotainment services in vehicular domain. The availability of multimedia services over mobile phones and the tremendous success of low-cost Laptops have given rise to the expectation of providing multimedia services while on the move in vehicles. However, there are significant technological challenges in establishing continuous high-rate communication between the Internet/Multimedia server and the vehicles. The main problem is that it is difficult to provide direct communication between the server and the vehicles especially when the vehicles are moving at a very high speed. …

Exploring The Spatial Dimensions Of Rural Development Models In Malaysia 1957-2007, L.J. Fredericks Oct 2009

Exploring The Spatial Dimensions Of Rural Development Models In Malaysia 1957-2007, L.J. Fredericks

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Malaysia, a relatively small country, gained independence from Britain in 1957 after a lengthy colonial rule and the national government began an economic restructuring process to become a developed country. The initial rural development push to rectify the colonial policy of benign neglect of the Malay, rural, peasant sector rested on the urban industrial growth models in neoclassical growth theory. Integrated rural development was the second approach, conceptually fuzzy and diffuse. Broader policy formulations followed anchored on multiple policy interventions approximately focused on rural poverty. In these policy formulations, the notions of geography, space, place and territory the Spatial dimensions- in …

An Initial Report On The Impact Of Multiple Technical Degree Programs On Undergraduate Recruitment, Amber Settle, Liz Friedman Oct 2009

An Initial Report On The Impact Of Multiple Technical Degree Programs On Undergraduate Recruitment, Amber Settle, Liz Friedman

Technical Reports

In this paper, we describe initial results of a survey taken by freshman and first-year transfer students at DePaul University during the 2009-2010 academic year. While DePaul is unusual in offering a large number of technically-oriented degree programs and this information is prominent in promotional literature, no study of the impact of multiple degree programs on the recruitment of first-year students had been conducted. The results of this initial study show that while a large majority of students indicate that the number of degree programs is a positive factor for application and enrollment at DePaul, more important factors include the …

Chinese Painting: Philosophy, Theory, And The Pursuit Of Cultivation Through The Dao, Elizabeth Reynolds Oct 2009

Chinese Painting: Philosophy, Theory, And The Pursuit Of Cultivation Through The Dao, Elizabeth Reynolds

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Chinese painting and painting theory have roots within China’s major philosophies significantly including Confucianism, Buddhism, and Daoism. Chinese painting while not exclusively adherent to the beliefs and practices of a single belief system instead reveals to overlap these beliefs in the thought process and execution of painting. There is a strong precedent of Chinese painters and their styles embodying Daoist philosophy in not only the appearance and practice of painting but in painting theory as well. Searching for the truth, or the Dao, was a key goal of many artists who through cultivation of one’s intellect or artistic skill could …

Unjustified: The Practical Irrelevance Of The Justification/Excuse Distinction, Gabriel J. Chin Oct 2009

Unjustified: The Practical Irrelevance Of The Justification/Excuse Distinction, Gabriel J. Chin

University of Michigan Journal of Law Reform

In recent decades, the distinction between justification and excuse defenses has been a favorite topic of theorists of philosophy and criminal law. Notwithstanding the impressive intellectual efforts devoted to the task, no single scholar or viewpoint appears to be on the verge of generating practical consensus about the concepts of justification and excuse, categorization of the defenses, or categorization of difficult individual cases. This Essay suggests that none of these goals can be usefully advanced through the justification/excuse distinction.

Waste To Enzymes Through Solid State Fermentation, Pariatamby Agamuthu, A. Nithiya

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

Malaysia is facing tremendous challenges in minimizing the 8 million tonnes of municipal and agricultural waste thrown into landfill every year. Waste disposal is a major problem, as the costs associated with waste management are skyrocketing. Annually around 998 million tonnes of agricultural wastes are being produced globally. Only 15% is used as animal feed, particularly as cattle supplement, plant fertilizer or soil conditioner, while the rest are dumped in landfills; which leads to adverse environmental impacts including global warming. In order to minimize the waste, one option is to convert the waste to value-added products. Brewery spent grain (BSG), …

The Effect Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid And Fatty Acids On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Progression, David A. Brown Oct 2009

The Effect Of All-Trans Retinoic Acid And Fatty Acids On Mcf-7 Breast Cancer Cell Progression, David A. Brown

Master's Theses

Vitamin A metabolites and retinoids may slow the progression of breast cancer and elicit anti-neoplastic properties similar to those of omega-3 fatty acids. Studies using animal models show a decrease in the incidence, growth and metastisis of mammary tumors in the presence of specific fatty acids. This effect is also seen with use of retinoids, specifically all-trans retinoic acid (AtRA). Thus, fatty acids may also alter retinoid homeostasis in mammary carcinoma cells (MCF-7s). The potential for inter/co dependency among fatty acids and retinoids is considerable, and here it has been hypothesized that a decrease in cancer progression will occur in …
