Neuropeptide Y Is Expressed By Osteocytes And Can Inhibit Osteoblastic Activity, John C. Igwe, Xi Jiang, Frane Paic, Li Ma, Douglas J. Adams, Carol C. Pilbeam, Ivo Kalajzic

UCHC Articles - Research

Osteocytes are the most abundant osteoblast lineage cells within the bone matrix. They respond to mechanical stimulation and can participate in the release of regulatory proteins that can modulate the activity of other bone cells. We hypothesize that neuropeptide Y (NPY), a neurotransmitter with regulatory functions in bone formation, is produced by osteocytes and can affect osteoblast activity. To study the expression of NPY by the osteoblast lineage cells, we utilized transgenic mouse models in which we can identify and isolate populations of osteoblasts and osteocytes. The Col2.3GFP transgene is active in osteoblasts and osteocytes, while the DMP1 promoter drives …

Animal-Assisted Therapy As A Pain Relief Intervention For Children, Carie Braun, T. Stangler, J. Narveson, S. Pettingel Oct 2009

Animal-Assisted Therapy As A Pain Relief Intervention For Children, Carie Braun, T. Stangler, J. Narveson, S. Pettingel

Nursing Faculty Publications

Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a healing modality involving a patient, an animal therapist, and handler with a goal of achieving a specified therapeutic outcome. Despite the myriad of studies documenting the benefits of AAT, no studies have yet determined the impact of animals on alleviation of pain in children. Therefore, a quasi-experimental intervention design was used to capture the change in pain and vital signs with (n = 18) or without (n = 39) AAT in children ages 3–17 in one acute care pediatric setting. The AAT intervention group experienced a significant reduction in pain level compared to …

An Archaeological Perspective On The Andean Concept Of Camaquen: Thinking Through Late Pre-Columbian Ofrendas And Huacas, Tamara L. Bray Oct 2009

An Archaeological Perspective On The Andean Concept Of Camaquen: Thinking Through Late Pre-Columbian Ofrendas And Huacas, Tamara L. Bray

Anthropology Faculty Research Publications

Ethnohistoric sources suggest that the indigenous inhabitants of Andean South America saw both people and things as animated or enlivened by a common vital force (camaquen). In approaching the subject of camaquen archaeologically, I attempt to place objects and their materiality at the analytical center, rather than the normally privileged ethnohistoric or ethnographic data, in order to see what new insights into the nature of precolumbian ontologies might be gained from ‘thinking through things.’ In this, I follow recent theories premised on the idea that the traditional segregation of concepts and things may hinder understanding of alternative worlds. The study …

Trudi Schoop: Passing On Her Legacy, Jeff Gilbert Oct 2009

Trudi Schoop: Passing On Her Legacy, Jeff Gilbert

Creative Arts Therapies Theses

The purpose of this thesis project was to create a documentary style recording of a panel of dance/movement therapy professionals talking about their work with, or study of, noted dance/movement therapy pioneer Trudi Schoop at a workshop during the 2009 American Dance Therapy Association (ADTA) Conference. My research questions for the panel and its audience were: “What were the qualities about Trudi Schoop that so many people appreciated about her (what was that light)?” “What did she do to cultivate those qualities?” and “How did she pass that on to others?” (Results in Appendix C).

The audience was invited to …

Acetaminophen Combinations Protect Against Iron-Induced Cardiac Damage In Gerbils, Ernest M. Walker Jr., Ryan G. Morrison, Lucy Dornon, Joseph P. Laurino, Sandra M. Walker, Mark Studeny, Paulette S. Wehner, Kevin M. Rice, Miaozong Wu, Eric R. Blough Oct 2009

Acetaminophen Combinations Protect Against Iron-Induced Cardiac Damage In Gerbils, Ernest M. Walker Jr., Ryan G. Morrison, Lucy Dornon, Joseph P. Laurino, Sandra M. Walker, Mark Studeny, Paulette S. Wehner, Kevin M. Rice, Miaozong Wu, Eric R. Blough

MIIR Faculty Research

This study tested if acetaminophen, N-methyl-D-glucamine dithiocarbamate (NMGDTC), deferoxamine, and combinations of these agents reduce excess iron content, prevent iron-induced pathology, reduce cardiac arrhythmias, and reduce mortality in iron-overloaded gerbils. Eight groups of 16 gerbils received iron dextran injections (ferric hydroxide dextran complex, 120 mg/kg, ip) or saline solution (controls) twice/wk for 8 wk. The 8 groups were treated every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday with one of the following: saline control, acetaminophen, 150 mg/kg, ip), acetaminophen (150 mg/kg, po), deferoxamine, 83 mg/kg, ip), NMGDTC (200 mg/kg, ip), or combinations of acetaminophen (75 mg/kg) with deferoxamine (42 mg/kg, each ip, separately) …

Flarr Pages #68: Autobiography And Travel: Motivation For Writing In World Languages Classes, Thomas C. Turner Oct 2009

Flarr Pages #68: Autobiography And Travel: Motivation For Writing In World Languages Classes, Thomas C. Turner

FLARR Pages

My idea for motivating compositional skill is to have students write about questions that they will surely be asked when they travel, especially, in my classes, when they travel to Latin America and Spain Students are most commonly asked about their families; about studies and future plans; about jobs, which are usually Summer jobs; and shortly thereafter about their views on love, courtship, and marriage. I have students write composition about these topics, drafts to be revised three times, and then students arrange the statements on one page, front and back. with illustrations. I then laminate the page for them and …

Drug research has enriched human life in many ways. The health care and resulting social and economic benefits of new drugs to society are most remarkable, are quite well recognized. The Uttarakhand Himalayas have a great wealth of medicinal plants and traditional medicinal knowledge. The medicinal plant that has been widely used as veterinary ethno-medicine in Uttarakhand region has been studied. These …

Small Is The New Biglaw: Some Thoughts On Technology, Economics, And The Practice Of Law, Glenn Harlan Reynolds Oct 2009

Small Is The New Biglaw: Some Thoughts On Technology, Economics, And The Practice Of Law, Glenn Harlan Reynolds

Scholarly Works

This paper looks at technological and economic changes affecting lawyers, and their effect on the competitiveness of large law firms. It explores methods of unbundling big law firm features, and providing similar services on a more ad hoc basis. In addition, it considers whether current legal education is properly preparing students for a world in which large law firms will be much less dominant. Based on a talk given at Hofstra Law School in March of 2009.
