A Rapid Prototyping Method For Constructing A Complex Three-Dimensional Substrate, Kathryn Jacoba Hart
A Rapid Prototyping Method For Constructing A Complex Three-Dimensional Substrate, Kathryn Jacoba Hart
Master's Theses
Cell culturing on three-dimensional structures has increased the possibilities in tissue engineering and bioreactor research. These structures enable cells to differentiate, proliferate, mobilize, and function in a conformation that more accurately mimics in vivo conditions. Computer generated models aid in development and rapid alteration of three-dimensional cell substrates, defining their internal structure as well as their external morphology. The rapid transition from substrate design to a viable culture is imperative to quickly advance research in biomedical and tissue engineering applications.
The aim of this thesis is to investigate the feasibility of a rapid prototyping process by selectively cross-linking and assembling …

Characterization Of Arsenic-Tolerant Bacterial Cultures From The Lower Laguna Madre Of South Texas, Gemma A. Berlanga, Michael W. Persans, Thomas Eubanks, Kristine L. Lowe
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Two forms of arsenic are found in the environment: As(V) and As(III), the latter being more toxic, water-soluble, and mobile. Microorganisms may increase the mobility of arsenic by reducing As(V) to As(III); however, detoxification and immobilization can occur via the oxidation of As(III) to As(V). The US EPA has set a minimum contaminant level of 10 parts per billion (ppb) for arsenic in drinking water. The research objective was to confirm the presence of arsenic-tolerant bacteria in the Lower Laguna Madre of south Texas. Sediment samples were collected and inoculated into growth media which contained either 2 mM As(III) or …

Department of Radiation Oncology Faculty Papers
PURPOSE: The tumor growth kinetics of the human LoVo colorectal xenograft model was assessed in response to vandetanib, an orally available receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor, radiotherapy (RT), or irinotecan (CPT-11), as single therapies and in combination. METHODS AND MATERIALS: LoVo cells were injected subcutaneously into the right hind limb (5 x 10(6) cells in 100 microL phosphate-buffered saline) of athymic NCR NUM mice and tumors were grown to a volume of 200-300 mm(3) before treatment. Vandetanib was administered at 50 mg/kg daily orally for 14 days starting on Day 1. RT was given as three fractions (3 x 3 Gy) …
A Novel Protein Arginine Methyltransferase Interacts With The Rna Induced Silencing Complex Component, Mut70, And Is Required For Rna Interference In Chlamydomonas Reinhardtii, James Becker
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
RNA interference (RNAi) is an important gene regulatory mechanism. It involves 21-24 nucleotide small RNA molecules that downregulate complementary, or near complementary, mRNA sequences through transcript degradation or translation repression. The non-coding small RNA molecules act through an effector complex known as the RNA induced silencing complex (RISC). The components of RISC are evolutionarily conserved and consist of DICER and AGO proteins as well as several other polypeptides. These include, among others, MUT70, an RNA binding protein that has an RGG rich domain. Protein arginine methyltransferases typically methylate RGG rich regions, affecting protein stability, localization, and/or interactions. Here, we report …
Policy Networks And The Juvenile Court: The Reform Of Youth Justice, C. 1905-1950, Anne Logan
Policy Networks And The Juvenile Court: The Reform Of Youth Justice, C. 1905-1950, Anne Logan
SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)
This article examines in detail the construction of government policy for juvenile courts during the first half of the twentieth century. The Children Act 1908 required that criminal charges against children and young persons be heard by a court sitting at a different time or in a different place from the summary court hearings held for adults. Later government legislation (for London, in 1920) and guidance (for the rest of England and Wales) added that children's cases should be dealt with by specially selected justices, specifically chosen for their knowledge and understanding of young people. Drawing on policy networks theory, …

5-Ht And Gaba Modulate Intrinsic Excitability Of Type I Interneurons In Hermissenda, Nan Ge Jin, Lian-Ming Tian, Terry Crow
Faculty, Staff and Student Publications
The sensory neurons (photoreceptors) in the visual system of Hermissenda are one site of plasticity produced by Pavlovian conditioning. A second site of plasticity produced by conditioning is the type I interneurons in the cerebropleural ganglia. Both photoreceptors and statocyst hair cells of the graviceptive system form monosynaptic connections with identified type I interneurons. Two proposed neurotransmitters in the graviceptive system, serotonin (5-HT) and gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), have been shown to modify synaptic strength and intrinsic neuronal excitability in identified photoreceptors. However, the potential role of 5-HT and GABA in plasticity of type I interneurons has not been investigated. Here …

Sustainable Planning And Design For Ecotourism: Ecotecture Embraced By The Essence Of Nature On Amboro National Park, Santa Cruz-Bolivia, Claudia P. Gil
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The concern for the environment and social aspects have been emphasizing in the concept of ecotourism. Tourism is the world's largest industry. "It accounts for more than 10% of total employment, 11% of global GDP, and total tourist trips are predicted to increase to 1.6 billion by 2020". As such, it has a major and increasing impact on both people and nature. The increase of travels and tourists in the world, has led to the acknowledgement of tourism as part of the emissions of greenhouse gases. Therefore, the framework of sustainable development in tourism has been developed as well as …

Heller's Gridlock Economy In Perspective: Why There Is Too Little, Not Too Much, Private Property, Richard A. Epstein
Coase-Sandor Institute for Law & Economics Research Paper Series
This Article critiques Michael Heller's important contribution in the Gridlock Economy. At no point does it take the position that gridlock, or the associated anticommons, is not a serious issue in the design of a legal system. But it does insist that gridlock is not the major source of social dislocation, or that private ownership is the major source of gridlock. More concretely, the articles examines the other important sources of economic distortion that are unrelated to economic gridlock from private action. These include the use of excessive government subsidies (as with health care), misguided government licenses (as with broadcast …

Quantification Of Abnormal Repetitive Behaviour In Captive European Starlings (Sturnus Vulgaris), Bo Brilot, L Asher, G Feenders, M Bateson
School of Biological and Marine Sciences
Stereotypies are repetitive, unvarying and goalless behaviour patterns that are often considered indicative of poor welfare in captive animals. Quantifying stereotypies can be difficult, particularly during the early stages of their development when behaviour is still flexible. We compared two methods for objectively quantifying the development of route-tracing stereotypies in caged starlings. We used Markov chains and T-pattern analysis (implemented by the software package, Theme) to identify patterns in the sequence of locations a bird occupied within its cage. Pattern metrics produced by both methods correlated with the frequency of established measures of stereotypic behaviour and abnormal behaviour patterns counted …

Using Hidden Markov Models (HMMs) as a recognition framework for automatic classification of animal vocalizations has a number of benefits, including the ability to handle duration variability through nonlinear time alignment, the ability to incorporate complex language or recognition constraints, and easy extendibility to continuous recognition and detection domains. In this work, we apply HMMs to several different species and bioacoustic tasks using generalized spectral features that can be easily adjusted across species and HMM network topologies suited to each task. This experimental work includes a simple call type classification task using one HMM per vocalization for repertoire analysis of …

Gestural Interaction Of In‐Vehicle Tasks: Audio And Climate Controls, Chongyoon Chung
Theses
I thought if in-vehicle interaction were as easy and spontaneous as our language, it would ensure safe driving. Through this research, I found drivers preferred gestural language to voice language when the control was simple and repetitive. This study investigates gestural interaction of secondary in-vehicle tasks while driving. I researched
functions that were most distractive to drivers and applied those to my new interaction. According to Paul Green, the most distractive in-vehicle interaction was audio and climate controls. Based on this research, I then applied audio and climate controls gestures as input for the interactions. The best eyes and hands …
Making Amends: Amending The Icsid Convention To Reconcile Competing Interests In International Investment Law, Kate M. Supnik
Making Amends: Amending The Icsid Convention To Reconcile Competing Interests In International Investment Law, Kate M. Supnik
Duke Law Journal
Globalization has increased international investment activity, but no unified legal framework governs international investments. After several attempts to establish a multilateral investment framework, prospective parties remain unable to reach a consensus on a viable system to address investor and state rights. Developed, capital-exporting states wish to protect their citizens' investments, whereas developing states simultaneously seek to attract investments and maintain regulatory autonomy. In the absence of a comprehensive agreement, bilateral investment treaties serve as the primary legal instruments setting forth the terms of cross-border investments. These treaties often grant private investors the right to file claims before the International Centre …

Flowers, Queens, And Goons: Unruly Women In Rural Pakistan, Lubna N. Chaudhry
Journal of International Women's Studies
This article focuses on girls and women perceived as deviant, difficult, or different by their communities in rural Punjab, even as it pluralizes and historicizes performances of rebellious, unruly selves. Specifically, the paper uses fieldwork interactions with girls who enjoyed wanderings in out-of-bound spaces, women who claimed a position of authority as headmistresses in village schools, and women who troubled the social imaginary through their acts of intimidation and involvement in local politics in order to examine defiance of gendered norms within the context of material, structural, and discursive realities framing individual lives. The analysis illustrates how regional differences among …
Historicizing Garment Manufacturing In Bangladesh: Gender, Generation, And New Regulatory Regimes, Shelley Feldman
Historicizing Garment Manufacturing In Bangladesh: Gender, Generation, And New Regulatory Regimes, Shelley Feldman
Journal of International Women's Studies
The contemporary Bangladesh economy is marked by sustained increases in women’s paid employment, a rise that began in the 1980s with complex and contradictory effects on the lives of women and communities. Today this increase in the numbers of employed women recasts gender relations and the gender and social contract, with wage employment leading to new sources of mobility and social, economic, and political freedoms for women, but also to contestation over rights and security, and, in some cases, to declines in women’s welfare. In this paper, I offer a window on the relationship between macro-economic changes in the Bangladesh …

Chascript: A Chinese Interactive Typographic Drawing Application, Yiyi Lu
Theses
Chinese characters have a complex beauty as well as individual meanings. People, like artists and designers, are often drawn to this. But it is not easy for non-Chinese people to use these characters to design. This work explores how interactive multimedia can be utilized as a tool for users in type drawing. Divided in to four main sections, this thesis will offer general information about Chinese characters, will explain what stroke and stroke order is, will offer a pictograph form, and will allow the user to try and play with Chinese characters interactively in order to get the art work …
Normative Conflict In International Law, Carmen Pavel
Normative Conflict In International Law, Carmen Pavel
San Diego Law Review
In Part II, I will illustrate the problem of conflict in international law by drawing on two cases in international trade law. I will then argue in Parts III and IV that legal conflict often represents a genuine normative conflict grounded in our multiple, incommensurable, and potentially conflicting moral commitments. In doing so, I will deflect potential skepticism about the reality of normative conflict in international law. Drawing from existing international legal practice, I will show in Part IV that we can resort to a substantial toolbox of rules and principles to reconcile legal norms that are in tension with …

Urbanization, The Intelligentsia, And Meaning Change: A Comment On Horacio Spector's Value Pluralism And The Two Concepts Of Rights, Christopher T. Wonnell
San Diego Law Review
In my view, Professor Spector's paper is more persuasive in identifying the rhetorical change that has taken place than in providing a causal account of its genesis. The traditional rights of private property and freedom of contract do seem a long way from the new rights to receive medical care or safe and affordable housing. However, the rural-to-urban hypothesis for the cause of this change is not especially persuasive. Laissez-faire thinking of autonomous private spheres was at its height in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, among conditions far more urban and commercial than had historically been the case …
Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Novel Fatty Acid Derivatives And Other Natural Antimicrobials, Patricia Nobmann
Antimicrobial Evaluation Of Novel Fatty Acid Derivatives And Other Natural Antimicrobials, Patricia Nobmann
Doctoral
The food industry has shown increased interest for novel natural antimicrobials due to consumer demand for foods with fewer synthetic additives, increased safety, quality and shelf-life. Concurrently, the emergence of drug resistant bacteria substantiates the need for newer antimicrobial agents. Alternative strategies include the use of novel antimicrobials, such as fatty acid derivatives, essential oils and bacteriocins, with proven antimicrobial properties against a diverse range of bacteria. This study investigated novel carbohydrate fatty acid (CF A) derivatives for their antibacterial activity against a range of pathogenic and spoilage bacteria. A series of mono-substituted CF A derivatives using lauric and caprylic …

Searching For Genes That Matter In Acute Kidney Injury: A Systematic Review, Jonathan Lu
Searching For Genes That Matter In Acute Kidney Injury: A Systematic Review, Jonathan Lu
Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library
Identifying patients who may develop acute kidney injury (AKI) remains challenging as clinical determinants explain only a portion of individual risk. Another factor that likely affects risk is intrinsic genetic variability. Therefore, we performed a systematic review of studies that related the development or prognosis of AKI to genetic variation. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, HuGEnet, SCOPUS and Web of Science for articles from 1950 to Dec 2007. Two independent researchers screened articles using predetermined criteria. Studies were assessed for methodological quality via an aggregate scoring system. The 16 included studies were of cohort or case-cohort design, and investigated 35 polymorphisms …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Nutrient uptake capacity is an important parameter in modeling nutrient uptake by plants. Researchers commonly assume that uptake capacity measured for a species can be used across sites. We tested this assumption by measuring the nutrient uptake capacity of intact roots of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmanni Parry) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt.) at Loch Vale Watershed and Fraser Experimental Forest in the Rocky Mountains of central Colorado. Roots still attached to the tree were exposed to one of three concentrations of nutrient solutions for time periods ranging from 1 to 96h, and solutions were analyzed for ammonium, …
