Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

The ubiquitin/26S proteasome system (UPS) is conserved in all eukaryotic species. The 26S proteasome serves as the protease in this pathway and is responsible for the degradation of abnormal and short-lived proteins after their modification with a polyubiquitin tag. It consists of one or two ATP-dependent, 19S regulatory particles and an ATP-independent 20S core protease. PAG1 serves as one of at least 14 different subunits of the 20S core protease. In this study, the role of the 20S core protease in general and PAG1, the α7 subunit of the 26S proteasome, in particular during Arabidopsis growth and development was investigated …

Pollution Swapping: The Effect Of Phosphorus Sequestration On Denitrification In Wetland Sediments, Nathaniel Femi Adegboyega Jan 2009

Pollution Swapping: The Effect Of Phosphorus Sequestration On Denitrification In Wetland Sediments, Nathaniel Femi Adegboyega

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Surface water quality is currently one of the most important environmental issues facing the state of Iowa since the ecological and recreational health of water bodies are threatened by non-point pollution. Most of Iowa's lakes are polluted because of their high concentration of nutrients, often phosphorus (P), which leads to excessive algal growth (eutrophication). To prevent eutrophication, it is necessary to prevent P from entering surface waters or to sequester (make unavailable to algae) the P that is already in the water body. One method to achieve this is to introduce substances that can tightly fix P (sorption).

The Work Product Doctrine And Tax Accrual Workpapers, Steve R. Johnson Jan 2009

The Work Product Doctrine And Tax Accrual Workpapers, Steve R. Johnson

Scholarly Publications

In its rehearing of Textron, the First Circuit has an opportunity to rectify an error and curb unwise recent expansion of work product protection for tax accrual workpapers. In August 2007, a district court denied the government’s petition for enforcement of an IRS summons on Textron Inc. and its subsidiaries for tax accrual workpapers in connection with IRS examinations of the taxpayers’ 1998 to 2001 income tax returns. A divided panel of the First Circuit affirmed in January 2009. In March 2009, the First Circuit withdrew the panel opinion and dissent, and it set the case for en banc hearing …

Flipping The Script: Contra Proferentem And Standard Form Contracts, David Horton Jan 2009

Flipping The Script: Contra Proferentem And Standard Form Contracts, David Horton

University of Colorado Law Review

Virtually all modern contracts are standard forms. Although courts have long interpreted ambiguities in such agreements strictly against the drafter, they have struggled to explain why they do so. Under sustained academic fire, states are beginning to abandon the strict against-the-drafter doctrine. Recent cases have even refused to certify class actions on the grounds that a corporate defendant's nonnegotiated, unilaterally-dictated contract is ambiguous and thus cannot be construed without individualized extrinsic evidence. This Article claims that the rejection of the strict against-the-drafter rule stems from confusion about its normative foundation. Judges and commentators have offered three rationales for the doctrine: …

Toward A Net-Zero Carbon Planet: A Policy Proposal, Matthew J. Kiefer Jan 2009

Toward A Net-Zero Carbon Planet: A Policy Proposal, Matthew J. Kiefer

University of Colorado Law Review

The effort to address climate change is global in scale and increasingly urgent, yet it lacks an effective policy framework. President Obama's determination to elevate clean energy to a national policy priority, Congress's consideration of a federal cap-and-trade regime for greenhouse gases, and the upcoming revisions to the Kyoto Protocol all provide an opportunity to move toward adopting a globally balanced carbon budget. A balanced carbon budget could replace the current, somewhat arbitrary greenhouse gas reduction targets with a scientifically derived calibration limiting global carbon emissions to the rate of carbon absorption. Carbon sub-budgets could then be allocated to each …

EP in vivo enhances transfer of DNA vaccines and therapeutic plasmids to the skin, muscle, tumors, and other tissues resulting in high levels of expression, often with serological and clinical benefits. the recent interest in nonviral gene transfer as treatment options for a vast array of conditions has resulted in the refinement and optimization of EP technology. current research has revealed that EP can be successfully used in many species, including humans. clinical trials are …

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Single Stranded Peptide Nucleic Acids, Anna K. Manukyan Jan 2009

Molecular Dynamics Study Of Single Stranded Peptide Nucleic Acids, Anna K. Manukyan

Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences

A PNA molecule is a DNA strand where the sugar-phosphate backbone has been replaced by a structurally homomorphous pseudopeptide chain consisting of N(2-aminoethyl)-glycine units. PNA binds strongly to both DNA and RNA. However, an analysis of the X-ray and NMR data show that the dihedral angles of PNA/DNA or PNA/DNA complexes are very different from those of DNA:DNA or RNA:RNA complexes. In addition, the PNA strand is very flexible. One way to improve the binding affinity of PNA for DNA/RNA is to design a more pre-organized PNA structure. An effective way to rigidify the PNA strand is to introduce …

Panarchy: Discontinuities Reveal Similarities In The Dynamic System Structure Of Ecological And Social Systems, Ahjond S. Garmestani, Craig R. Allen, Lance Gunderson

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

In this paper, we review the empirical evidence of discontinuous distributions in complex systems within the context of panarchy theory and discuss the significance of discontinuities for understanding emergent properties such as resilience. Over specific spatial-temporal scale ranges, complex systems can configure in a variety of regimes, each defined by a characteristic set of self-organized structures and processes. A system may remain within a regime or dramatically shift to another regime. Understanding the drivers of regime shifts has provided critical insight into system structure and resilience. Although analyses of regime shifts have tended to focus on the system level, new …

Focal Acidosis In The Pre-Bötzinger Complex Area Of Awake Goats Induces A Mild Tachypnea, K. L. Krause, Hubert V. Forster, S. E. Davis, T. Kiner, Joshua M. Bonis, Lawrence Pan, B. Qian

Physical Therapy Faculty Research and Publications

There are widespread chemosensitive areas in the brain with varying effects on breathing. In the awake goat, microdialyzing (MD) 50% CO(2) at multiple sites within the medullary raphe increases pulmonary ventilation (Vi), blood pressure, heart rate, and metabolic rate (Vo(2)) (11), while MD in the rostral and caudal cerebellar fastigial nucleus has a stimulating and depressant effect, respectively, on these variables (17). In the anesthetized cat, the pre-Bötzinger complex (preBötzC), a hypothesized respiratory rhythm generator, increases phrenic nerve activity after an acetazolamide-induced acidosis (31, 32). To gain insight into the effects of focal acidosis (FA) within the preBötzC during physiological …

5-Aminoimidazole-4-carboxamide-1-beta-D-ribofuranoside (AICA riboside) has been extensively used in vitro and in vivo to activate the AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK), a metabolic sensor involved in both cellular and whole body energy homeostasis. However, it has been recently highlighted that AICA riboside also exerts AMPK-independent effects, mainly on AMP-regulated enzymes and mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation (OXPHOS), leading to the conclusion that new compounds with reduced off target effects are needed to specifically activate AMPK. Here, we review recent findings on newly discovered AMPK activators, notably on A-769662, a nonnucleoside compound from the thienopyridone family. We also report that A-769662 is able to activate …

Symbiotic Effects Of The Fungus Glomus Sp. On Chromium(Iii), Chromium(Vi), And Lead(Ii) Uptake By Mesquite (Prosopis Sp.): A Novel Method To Remediate Heavy Metals, Jack A. Arias

Open Access Theses & Dissertations

The indiscriminate disposal of lead (Pb) and chromium (Cr) containing wastes has resulted in a detrimental impact on environmental health. Lead and Cr are in the EPA priority list due to their degree of toxicity on humans, animals, plants, and other living organisms. The removal of toxic wastes involves technologies that are expensive, sometimes incomplete, and could represent health hazards. In addition, site restoration after contaminant removal encompasses time and technological resources. Phytoremediation, the use of plants alone or associated with microorganisms, represents a potentially cost-effective option in the long term management of contaminated sites. Various plants known as "hyperaccumulators" …
