Upregulation Of Defensins In Burn Sheep Small Intestine, Brian J Poindexter, Gordon L Klein, Stephen M Milner, Roger J Bick Jan 2009

Upregulation Of Defensins In Burn Sheep Small Intestine, Brian J Poindexter, Gordon L Klein, Stephen M Milner, Roger J Bick

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to visualize and localize the sheep antimicrobials, beta-defensins 1, 2, and 3, (SBD-1, SBD-2, SBD-3), sheep neutrophil defensin alpha (SNP-1), and the cathelicidin LL-37 in sheep small intestine after burn injury, our hypothesis being that these compounds would be upregulated in an effort to overcome a compromised endothelial lining. Response to burn injury includes the release of proinflammatory cytokines and systemic immune suppression that, if untreated, can progress to multiple organ failure and death, so protective mechanisms have to be initiated and implemented.

METHODS: Tissue sections were probed with antibodies to the antimicrobials …

Structure Altering Effects Of A Multicomponent Reading Intervention: An Application Of The Direct And Inferential Mediation (Dime) Model Of Reading Comprehension In Upper Elementary Grades, Georgios Kalantzis, Harel Z Shouval Jan 2009

Structure Altering Effects Of A Multicomponent Reading Intervention: An Application Of The Direct And Inferential Mediation (Dime) Model Of Reading Comprehension In Upper Elementary Grades, Georgios Kalantzis, Harel Z Shouval

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: Synaptic plasticity underlies many aspect of learning memory and development. The properties of synaptic plasticity can change as a function of previous plasticity and previous activation of synapses, a phenomenon called metaplasticity. Synaptic plasticity not only changes the functional connectivity between neurons but in some cases produces a structural change in synaptic spines; a change thought to form a basis for this observed plasticity. Here we examine to what extent structural plasticity of spines can be a cause for metaplasticity. This study is motivated by the observation that structural changes in spines are likely to affect the calcium dynamics …

Molluscan Memory Of Injury: Evolutionary Insights Into Chronic Pain And Neurological Disorders, Edgar T Walters, Leonid L Moroz Jan 2009

Molluscan Memory Of Injury: Evolutionary Insights Into Chronic Pain And Neurological Disorders, Edgar T Walters, Leonid L Moroz

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Molluscan preparations have yielded seminal discoveries in neuroscience, but the experimental advantages of this group have not, until now, been complemented by adequate molecular or genomic information for comparisons to genetically defined model organisms in other phyla. The recent sequencing of the transcriptome and genome of Aplysia californica, however, will enable extensive comparative studies at the molecular level. Among other benefits, this will bring the power of individually identifiable and manipulable neurons to bear upon questions of cellular function for evolutionarily conserved genes associated with clinically important neural dysfunction. Because of the slower rate of gene evolution in this molluscan …

Is Paromomycin An Effective And Safe Treatment Against Cutaneous Leishmaniasis? A Meta-Analysis Of 14 Randomized Controlled Trials, Dae Hyun Kim, Hye Jin Chung, Joachim Bleys, Reza F Ghohestani Jan 2009

Is Paromomycin An Effective And Safe Treatment Against Cutaneous Leishmaniasis? A Meta-Analysis Of 14 Randomized Controlled Trials, Dae Hyun Kim, Hye Jin Chung, Joachim Bleys, Reza F Ghohestani

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

BACKGROUND: High cost, poor compliance, and systemic toxicity have limited the use of pentavalent antimony compounds (SbV), the treatment of choice for cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL). Paromomycin (PR) has been developed as an alternative to SbV, but existing data are conflicting.

METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, without language restriction, through August 2007, to identify randomized controlled trials that compared the efficacy or safety between PR and placebo or SbV. Primary outcome was clinical cure, defined as complete healing, disappearance, or reepithelialization of all lesions. Data were extracted independently by two investigators, and pooled …

Ethical Challenges And Opportunities At The Edge: Incorporating Spirituality And Religion Into Psychotherapy, John C. Gonsiorek, P. Scott Richards, Kenneth I. Pargament, Mark R. Mcminn Jan 2009

Ethical Challenges And Opportunities At The Edge: Incorporating Spirituality And Religion Into Psychotherapy, John C. Gonsiorek, P. Scott Richards, Kenneth I. Pargament, Mark R. Mcminn

Faculty Publications - Doctor of Psychology (PsyD) Program

Incorporating spirituality and religion into psychotherapy has been controversial, but recent contributions have argued the importance and provided foundations for doing so. Discussions of ethical challenges in this process are emerging, and this contribution discusses several preliminary issues, relying on the Resolution on Religious, Religion-Based and/or Religion-Derived Prejudice adopted by the American Psychological Association in 2007, as guidance when used with the American Psychological Association’s (2002) Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct. Specifically, this discussion of preliminary challenges addresses competence, bias, maintaining traditions and standards of psychology, and integrity in labeling services for reimbursement. Commentators deepen the discussion, …

Resolving Young Adult Attrition, Martin Weber Jan 2009

Resolving Young Adult Attrition, Martin Weber

180 Symposium Publications

Many Seventh-day Adventist clergy suffer the loss of their adult children to denominational attrition, and their pain is shared throughout the general population of North American Adventist parents. To identify the causative factors and design remedies, I devoted a Doctor of Ministry project involving active and retired clergy couples in the Mid-America Union. A 111-point questionnaire was mailed to each of 222 active and retired clergy who have adult children. Data requested was based on the research question: What influences from Seventh-day Adventist clergy parents in Mid-America may affect whether their children experience attrition from that denomination upon becoming adults? …

Detection Of Free-Ranging West Indian Manatees Trichechus Manatus Using Side-Scan Sonar, Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske, Leon David Olivera-Gomez, Robert E. Ford Jan 2009

Detection Of Free-Ranging West Indian Manatees Trichechus Manatus Using Side-Scan Sonar, Daniel Gonzalez-Socoloske, Leon David Olivera-Gomez, Robert E. Ford

Faculty Publications

Turbid and tannin-stained waterways are difficult habitats to study and present problems with respect to the management of aquatic fauna, and especially of endangered and cryptic animals such as manatees Trichechus spp. Linnaeus. Throughout much of the range of the extant trichechid species (T. inunguis, T. manatus, and T. senegalensis), the scientific approaches that are used successfully to document the status of the Florida subspecies (T. m. latirostris) are not feasible, due either to constraints associated with habitat or to the high costs involved. We examined the use of side-scan sonar as a novel way to acoustically detect free-ranging West …

A Rhetorician's View Of Religious Speech In Civic Argument, Jack L. Sammors Jan 2009

A Rhetorician's View Of Religious Speech In Civic Argument, Jack L. Sammors

Seattle University Law Review

I first examine and reject liberal political methods of addressing the question of religious speech in civic argument, all of which depend upon norms external to the argument that are then excluded from it. Next, in proposing a method that relies only upon the constitutive norms of civic argument itself, I offer a description of civic argument as rhetoric, examine the risks of religious rhetoric in this civic argument, and examine the constitutive norms of civic argument. I address whether the constitutive norms of civic argument are sufficient restraints upon religious rhetoric such that reliance upon external norms is not …

Electrified Law: A Brief Introduction To The Workshop On The Future Of The Legal Course Book, David M. Skover Jan 2009

Electrified Law: A Brief Introduction To The Workshop On The Future Of The Legal Course Book, David M. Skover

Seattle University Law Review

This unique venture brought scholars at the forefront of pedagogical reform together with key representatives of the print and electronic law book industry and the National Conference of Bar Examiners to explore the options available for transforming the existing prototypes of legal education and course materials. The Workshop participants engaged deeply in thoughtful dialogues about promising and pragmatic paths for the future of electrified law. Over the course of four sessions, they discussed, at different levels of abstraction, the proposition that real reform in legal education is best served by the marriage of innovative ideas with innovative media.

Minimalism And Deliberative Democracy: A Closer Look At The Virtues Of “Shallowness”, Matthew Steilen Jan 2009

Minimalism And Deliberative Democracy: A Closer Look At The Virtues Of “Shallowness”, Matthew Steilen

Seattle University Law Review

Judicial minimalism is an account of how judges should, and sometimes do, decide the cases before them. Generally speaking, minimalist judges prefer to resolve difficult cases in a modest way. They favor narrow decisions, confined to the facts of the case; and they favor shallow decisions, avoiding any large account of the problem at hand and how it should be resolved. “Instead of adopting theories,” Cass Sunstein says, minimalist judges “decide cases.” The central claim of this Article is that minimalism does not “spur” or “promote” democracy, as Sunstein has long argued it does. Sunstein’s basic idea is that a …

Epitope-Based Vaccination Against Pneumonic Tularemia, Stephen H. Gregory, Stephanie Mott, Jennifer Phung, Jinhee Lee, Leonard Moise, Julie A. Mcmurry, William Martin, Anne S. De Groot Jan 2009

Epitope-Based Vaccination Against Pneumonic Tularemia, Stephen H. Gregory, Stephanie Mott, Jennifer Phung, Jinhee Lee, Leonard Moise, Julie A. Mcmurry, William Martin, Anne S. De Groot

Institute for Immunology and Informatics Faculty Publications

Francisella tularensis, the etiological agent of tularemia, is one of the most infectious bacterial pathogens known. No vaccine is currently approved for public use. Previously, we identified epitopes recognized specifically by T cells obtained from individuals following infection with F. tularensis. Here, we report that a subunit vaccine constructed based upon these epitopes elicited protective immunity in “humanized” HLA class II (DRB1*0401) transgenic mice. Vaccinated mice challenged intratracheally with a lethal dose of F. tularensis (Live Vaccine Strain) exhibited a rapid increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine production and diminished number of organisms in the lungs, and a concurrent increased …

From Bush V. Gore To Namudno: A Response To Professor Amar, Ellen D. Katz Jan 2009

From Bush V. Gore To Namudno: A Response To Professor Amar, Ellen D. Katz

Articles

In his Dunwody Lecture, Professor Akhil Amar invites us to revisit the Bush v. Gore controversy and consider what went wrong. This short essay responds to Professor Amar by taking up his invitation and looking at the decision through a seemingly improbable lens, the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision last June in Northwest Austin Municipal Utility District No. One (NAMUDNO) v. Holder. Among its many surprises, NAMUDNO helps illuminate the Court’s fundamental error nine years ago. Professor Amar forcefully argues that the mistrust with which the Justices in the Bush v. Gore majority viewed the Florida Supreme Court was both unjustified …
