“Imprólogo” De Octavio Paz. Apuntes Poético-Poetológicos Sobre La Poesía De Vasko Popa, Ilka Kressner
Languages, Literatures and Cultures Faculty Scholarship
This study is a close-reading of Octavio Paz' "Imprólogo" (Árbol adentro), a poem that served as prologue to the fi rst anthology of poetry of the Serbian poet Vasko Popa. I propose to analyze the text under three aspects: first, it is a poetic practice that evolves through the examination of the poetry of Paz' friend and colleague. Second, "Imprólogo" is a study of the value of negation, a lyrical exercise carried out through the repeated deferral to being carried out. Thirdly, the poem offers a new, poetological reflection on intertextuality, conceived as a poetic dialogue in suspense. Thus, Paz …

Nutrient And Bacterial Transport In Runoff From Soil And Pond Ash Amended Feedlot Surfaces, John E. Gilley, Jason R. Vogel, Elaine D. Berry, Roger Eigenberg, David B. Marx, Brian L. Woodbury
Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications
The addition of pond ash (fly ash that has been placed in evaporative ponds and subsequently dewatered) to feedlot surfaces provides a healthier environment for livestock and economic advantages for the feedlot operator. However, the water quality effects of pond ash amended surfaces are not well understood. The objectives of this field investigation were to: (1) compare feedlot soil properties, and nutrient and bacterial transport in runoff, from pond ash amended surfaces and soil surfaces; (2) compare the effects of unconsolidated surface materials (USM) (loose manure pack) and consolidated subsurface materials (CSM) (compacted manure and underlying layers) on nutrient and …

The Enmeshment Of Five Worlds, 1710-1713: The Making Of New Bern In Southern Iroquoia, Leo Schelbert
Swiss American Historical Society Review
On September 29, 1710, a hundred and three people - among them their leader Christoph von Graffenried and his son Christoph jr. - arrived at a river the Tuscarora called Gow-ta-no, meaning "pine water." 1 When in 15 84 reconnoitering the coast between what his people named Cape Fear and Cape Lookout, the English captain Arthur Barlowe (?-?) called it Neus River, possibly derived from the name of the Neusiok people living at its mouth,.2 The newcomers were from Canton Bern, a leading member state of the Swiss Confederacy, and they intended to settle in a region located on the …

HANS RUEGSEGGER: I am in hopes that within a year I'll have over 100 head of horses, cattle, and pigs.
Next to my friendly greetings I report to you that I and my household arrived in Carolina safe and sound, and luckily at that, but on the 26th of Hornung [February] my son HanB died with great longing for the Lord Jesus. However on the last of Haying-Month [July] 1710, my daughter gave birth to a beautiful young son. We are on truly good and fat land; I am in hopes that within the year I'll have over 100 head …
The Abundance Of The Vector Insect, Triatoma Dimidiata (Reduviidae) And The Ecology Of Infection With Trypanosoma Cruzi, November 2009, Erica Vargas
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
A study was conducted in the Monteverde region to determine patterns of infection in Triatoma dimidiata with Trypanosoma cruzi. It was predicted that proximity to domestic animals and looking at the sex ratio would reveal patterns of infection in T. dimidiata. This study was conducted in San Luis, and 12 properties were searched for T. dimidiata. Fourteen individuals were found overall at four sites with two infected individuals. However, the two infected individuals were found in close association with dogs. Fewer nymphs than expected were found this year. Weather patterns of the region could account for the low abundance of …
Effect Of The Parasite Ophryocystis Elektroscirrha On Asymmetry And Wing Color Of The Monarch Butterfly, Danaus Plexippus, November 2009, Emily Landeck
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Ophryocystis elektroscirrha, a protozoan parasite, can have many different effects on the Monarch Butterfly, Danaus plexippus, including difficulty emerging from the pupal case and spreading their wings, and increased mortality within 24 hours of eclosion. Color in the wings of the butterfly is a strong indicator of fitness in terms of reproductive success. In this study I test if parasite load has an effect on the fitness of individuals of D. plexippus using color of the wings as a proxy for fitness. I measured the wingspan; asymmetry of forewings; color hue, saturation, and brightness; and parasite load on 15 individuals …
Alteration Of Crickets Songs Due To Competition Via Playbacks, November 2009, Katie Ehlers
Alteration Of Crickets Songs Due To Competition Via Playbacks, November 2009, Katie Ehlers
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
In many animal species, females do not mate randomly but rather they choose males based on their courtship signals. With crickets, calls may not be used soley for attracting a mate; they can also be used to reduce a competitor’s reproductive success. It was thus predicted that crickets would both respond to playbacks in an attempt to compete with the singing male and also alter their song in some way when singing competitively. Two different playbacks were created with one having a single cricket’s song and the other having a cricket chorus, and individuals received each treatment to determine its …
Impact Of Intraspecific And Interspecific Competition On Aggression And Foraging Of Hummingbirds (Family Trochilidae), November 2009, Whitney Tsai
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Hummingbirds have high metabolic needs and many aggressively compete for food. Competition is a potentially important component of resource defense but its impact on aggression and foraging of hummingbirds is not well understood. I manipulated the perception of competition by using the playback of the Coppery-headed Emerald (Elvira curpeiceps), a territorial hummingbird, and of the Violet Sabrewing (Campylopterus hemileucurus), a traplining hummingbird, to assess the impact on number of aggressive chases and foraging success of hummingbirds at feeders. This study was performed in Monteverde at the Monteverde Cloud Forest Preserve and Selvatura Park. The playbacks caused some but not all …
Effects Of Satiation On Pit-Trap Structure In The Larval Antlion Myrmeleon Crudelis (Neuroptera Myrmeleontidae), November 2009, Zack Newman
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Sit-and-wait predators have many strategies to deal with food scarcity. Some predators become more active, while others conserve energy by becoming more sedentary. I decided to test the effects that starvation has on the larval antlion Myrmeleon crudelis. Myrmeleon crudelis build pit-traps, conical structures built in sand, to capture prey. These pit-traps vary in diameter, depth, and angle for each larva. Seven individuals in one group were fed every other day, while seven other individuals were starved for all ten days this study took place. The pit-traps of both groups were then compared to each other. The results show that …
Relevance And Simulation In Metaphor, L. David Ritchie
Relevance And Simulation In Metaphor, L. David Ritchie
Communication Faculty Publications and Presentations
Recent writings have done much to develop and extend Relevance Theory as an account of metaphors and other "loose" language use. However, it is argued in this essay that Relevance Theory still leaves important gaps in its explanation and does not adequately address the "circularity" issue that has been raised. It is proposed that Perceptual Simulation Theory usefully extends Relevance Theory by providing a detailed cognitive mechanism for the "broadening" and "narrowing" specified by Relevance Theory. Extending Relevance Theory to include the cognitive mechanisms posited by Perceptual Simulation Theory also extends the reach of Relevance theory and enhances its ability …

A 2009 Supplement To Birds Of The Rocky Mountains, Paul A. Johnsgard
Birds of the Rocky Mountains by Paul A. Johnsgard
More than 20 years have elapsed since the publication of Birds of the Rocky Mountains, and many changes have occurred in that region’s ecology and bird life. There has also been a marked increase in recreational bird-watching, and an associated need for informative regional references on where and when to look for rare or especially appealing birds. As a result, an updating of the text seemed appropriate, especially as to the species accounts and the technical literature. The following update includes all those species that have undergone changes in their vernacular or Latin names, have had important changes in ranges, …

Birds Of The Rocky Mountains—Introduction, Paul A. Johnsgard
Birds of the Rocky Mountains by Paul A. Johnsgard
The Rocky Mountains represent the longest and in general the highest of the North American mountain ranges, extending for nearly two thousand miles from their origins in Alaska and northwestern Canada southward to their terminus in New Mexico, and forming the continental divide for this entire length. As such, these mountains have provided a convenient corridor for northward and southward movement of both plants and animal life, but on the other hand have produced important barriers to eastern and western plant and animal movements. These effects result nat only from their height and physical nature, but also from their manifold …

Context: It has been difficult to distinguish the independent effects of caloric restriction versus exercise training on insulin resistance.
Objective: Utilizing metabolic feeding and supervised exercise training, we examined the influence of caloric restriction vs. exercise training with and without weight loss on hepatic and peripheral insulin resistance.
Design, Participants, and Intervention: Thirty-four obese, older subjects were randomized to: caloric restriction with weight loss (CR), exercise training with weight loss (EWL), exercise training without weight loss (EX), or controls. Based on an equivalent caloric deficit in EWL and CR, we induced matched weight loss. Subjects in the EX group received …

The Legacy Of Solem V. Bartlett: How Courts Have Used Demographics To Bypass Congress And Erode The Basic Principles Of Indian Law, Charlene Koski
The Legacy Of Solem V. Bartlett: How Courts Have Used Demographics To Bypass Congress And Erode The Basic Principles Of Indian Law, Charlene Koski
Washington Law Review
Only Congress has authority to change a reservation’s boundaries, so when disputes arise over whether land is part of a reservation, courts turn to congressional intent. The challenge is that in many cases, Congress expressed its intent to diminish or disestablish a reservation as long as one hundred years ago through a series of “surplus land acts.” To help courts with their task, the Supreme Court in Solem v. Bartlett laid out a three-tiered analysis. This Comment examines how courts have applied modern demographics—part of Solem’s third and least probative tier—and demonstrates that they have consistently and primarily used the …

Moldy Corn For Beef Cattle, Cody Wright, Ben Holland, Russ Daly, Larry Osborne
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
Certain weather conditions and/or physical injury to the plant may result in the development of mold in various parts of the plant. Accumula¬tion of mold and production of mycotoxins may present a risk for livestock producers. However, after examination and analysis, moldy feeds may be able to be used in beef cattle diets—with little or no risk to the health of the animal.

Comparative Acute Toxicity Of Neonicotinoid And Pyrethroid Insecticides To Non-Target Crayfish (Procambarus Clarkii) Associated With Rice-Crayfish Crop Rotations, Gary C. Barbee, Michael J. Stout
Faculty Publications
Background: Most insecticides used to control rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuscel) infestations are pyrethroids. However, pyrethroids are highly toxic to non-target crayfish associated with rice-crayfish crop rotations. One solution to the near-exclusive reliance on pyrethroids in a rice-crayfish pest management program is to incorporate neonicotinoid insecticides, which are insect specific and effective against weevils but not extremely toxic to crayfish. This study aimed to take the first step to assess neonicotinoids as alternatives to pyrethroids in rice-crayfish crop rotations by measuring the acute toxicities of three candidate neonicotinoid insecticides, clothianidin, dinotefuran and thiamethoxam, to juvenile Procambarus clarkii (Girard) crayfish …

Edwardsiella Ictaluri Encodes An Acid-Activated Urease That Is Required For Intracellular Replication In Channel Catfish (Ictalurus Punctatus) Macrophages, Natha J. Booth, Judith B. Beekman, Ronald L. Thune
Faculty Publications
Genomic analysis indicated that Edwardsiella ictaluri encodes a putative urease pathogenicity island containing the products of nine open reading frames, including urea and ammonium transporters. In vitro studies with wild-type E. ictaluri and a ureG::kan urease mutant strain indicated that E. ictaluri is significantly tolerant of acid conditions (pH 3.0) but that urease activity is not required for acid tolerance. Growth studies demonstrated that E. ictaluri is unable to grow at pH 5 in the absence of urea but is able to elevate the environmental pH from pH 5 to pH 7 and grow when exogenous urea is available. Substantial …

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy
This submission details the reforms that the author believes are necessary in order to ―rationalize‖ the Copyright Act. It attempts to answer five questions which have been posed by the Ministers of Industry and Heritage in connection with the public consultation on the need to ―modernize‖ the Copyright Act. The author is concerned that the ‘modernization‘ that is called for may simply serve to protect powerful interest groups such as the MPAA. A variety of reforms are suggested, including: protection from any form of government censorship; a functional definition of ‘works‘ which focuses on originality, self-expression and fixation; minimum benefit …

Osgoode Hall Review of Law and Policy
The entertainment software industry is one of the fastest growing market segment in the global economy, with Canada rapidly establishing itself as a world leader in the multi-billion dollar global video game industry. The employment opportunities in this industry, as well as its investments in research and technology are also significant. These investments are not without risk – in the highly competitive industry of video game production the chance of a video game being a commercial failure outweighs the chances of its success. Internet piracy of video game software has also undergone explosive growth and represents a significant problem for …

Actin-related protein 5 (ARP5) is a conserved subunit of the INO80 chromatin-remodeling complex in yeast and mammals. We have characterized the expression and subcellular distribution of Arabidopsis thaliana ARP5 and explored its role in the epigenetic control of multicellular development and DNA repair. ARP5-specific monoclonal antibodies localized ARP5 protein to the nucleoplasm of interphase cells in Arabidopsis and Nicotiana tabacum. ARP5 promoter-reporter fusions and the ARP5 protein are ubiquitously expressed. A null mutant and a severe knockdown allele produced moderately dwarfed plants with all organs smaller than the wild type. The small and slightly deformed organs such as leaves and …

Transposable elements (TEs) are an important source of genome diversity and play a crucial role in genome evolution. A recent study by Zhao et al. describes novel patterns of TE diversification in the genome of the extinct mammoth Mammuthus primigenius. Analysis of Mammuthus has provided a unique genome landscape, a pivotal species for understanding TEs and genome evolution and hints at the diversity we verge on discovering by expanding our taxonomic sampling among genomes. Strategies based on this work might also revolutionize investigations of the interface between TE dynamics and genome diversity. © 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Fall arrival is an important period in the life history of migratory birds because processes during this period determine where birds spend the winter, which is linked to subsequent survival and condition at the time of spring migration. Henslow's Sparrows (Ammodramus henslowii) winter in savannas of longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), but their secretive behavior limits our knowledge of their winter ecology, including behavioral processes that lead to their documented preference of an ephemeral habitat-recently burned savannas. We expected that upon arrival Henslow's Sparrows actively seek out recently burned savannas and that their over-winter location is dependent on intraspecific interactions during …

Can R&D Investment Offset The Negative Impact Of Climate Change On Agricultural Productivity?, Nazrul Islam, Ruhul A. Salim
Climate Science Published Reports
Productivity growth in agriculture helps maintain the nation's economic prosperity. However, long-run productivity growth in agriculture faces several challenges such as the potential worsening of climate due to global warming and the loss of productive land due to land use competition, salinity, wind erosion and soil acidity. Strategic policy making and appropriate funding for sustained productivity growth in agriculture is therefore crucial.
Research and development (R&D) to drive innovation is an acknowledged main source of productivity growth. The development and application of technologies generated through R&D boosts agriculture's productivity. Agricultural R&D activities in Australia and in most other developed economies …
