An Improved Synthesis Of The Hdac Inhibitor Trichostatin A, Joseph Colombo Jan 2009

An Improved Synthesis Of The Hdac Inhibitor Trichostatin A, Joseph Colombo

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDIs) have found a wide variety of medicinal uses and are most noted for their specific apoptotic action towards cancer cells. Several hydroxamate HDIs have since been moved on to phase 1 and 2 clinical drug trials, with one having already been approved for treatment of advanced cutaneous T-cell lymphoma. Trichostatin A is one of the most potent known naturally-occurring inhibitors of histone deacetylase. Unfortunately for researchers, the syntheses that have been reported are both long and difficult, which leads to a low overall yield and therefore to a prohibitively expensive product, limiting its medicinal potential. This …

Development Of A Headspace Solid-Phase Microextraction (Hs-Spme) Procedure For The Determination Of Short-Chain Fatty Acids (Scfas) In Activated Sludge By Gc-Fid, Shiyan Cheng

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The process of wastewater treatment includes the removal of inorganic solids such as sand and gravel as well as organic materials, phosphorus, and nitrogen. Activated sludge, containing a variety of living organisms, is added into the wastewater treatment system. Short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), an energy source of the bioorganisms, are produced during activated sludge digestion, and play a significant role in phosphorus and nitrogen removal as well as the removal of organic materials during the process of wastewater treatment. Extensive research has been carried out recently in search of optimized conditions to increase the level of fatty acids in the …

Here Tunggë Made Here Slayn: Dangerous Speech Acts In Four Exempla From Robert Mannyng Of Brunne’S Handlyng Synne, Emily Russell

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In this project, I consider four exempla from Robert Mannyng of Brunne’s Handlyng Synne: “The Tale of the Bloody Child,” “The Tale of the Sacrilegious Carolers of Colbek,” “The Tale of the Midwife Who Christened the Child Wrongly,” and “St. Gregory’s Tale of the Nun Who Spoke Naughty Words.” I read these exempla through the theoretical texts of Georges Bataille, Jacques Derrida, Julia Kristeva, and Mary Douglas, as well as others, and conclude that speech acts, whether deviant or sanctioned, make identity at any level (de)constructable. I hope to show that while this is particularly noticeable against the historical …

Regulatory Competition, Choice Of Forum And Delaware’S Stake In Corporate Law, Faith Stevelman Jan 2009

Regulatory Competition, Choice Of Forum And Delaware’S Stake In Corporate Law, Faith Stevelman

Articles & Chapters

As Delaware corporate law confronts the twenty-first-century global economy, the state's legislators and jurists are becoming sensitive to increased threats to the law's sustained preeminence. The increased presence of federal laws and regulations in areas of corporate governance traditionally allocated to the states has been widely noted. The growth of federal corporate law standards may be undermining Delaware's confidence in the sustained prosperity of its chartering business - which has been a vital source of revenues and prestige for Delaware, its equity courts, and especially its corporate bar. The Delaware Court of Chancery appears to be concerned about the emigration …

Reading Between The Lines: Understanding Assistants In Fieldwork, Rina Sherman Jan 2009

Reading Between The Lines: Understanding Assistants In Fieldwork, Rina Sherman

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

In this presentation I will look at the various levels of interaction between the three agents, the researcher, the assistant and members of the community within which research is being conducted within the context of my fieldwork amongst the Ovahimba people over a period of seven years. The potential interaction between these three agents are manifold and can be questioned in a number of ways, of which: What the researcher wants, what the assistant thinks the researcher wants, what the assistant wants in terms of his or her respective relationships with the researcher and members of the community, what members …

Cops, Robbers, And Search Engines: The Questionable Role Of Criminal Law In Contributory Infringement Doctrine, Mark Bartholomew Jan 2009

Cops, Robbers, And Search Engines: The Questionable Role Of Criminal Law In Contributory Infringement Doctrine, Mark Bartholomew

Journal Articles

Online technologies have created a new litigation locus for intellectual property rights holders, one that targets intermediaries, not direct infringers. This unprecedented litigation strategy has put sudden pressure on the courts to evaluate the liability of indirect infringers. Without a developed body of precedent at their disposal, judges have resorted to analogies from the criminal law of accomplice liability to set the boundaries of contributory infringement. Does it make sense for intellectual property regulation to depend on the same principles that animate criminal law? This Article maintains that it would be a mistake to remake contributory infringement law in criminal …

Planted Grasslands And Native Sod Prairie: Equivalent Habitat For Grassland Birds, Kristel K. Bakker, Kenneth F. Higgins Jan 2009

Planted Grasslands And Native Sod Prairie: Equivalent Habitat For Grassland Birds, Kristel K. Bakker, Kenneth F. Higgins

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Little is known about how avian relationships to tracts of native sod prairie compare with avian relationships to single and multiple species of cool- and warm-season grassland plantings. We compared grassland bird species richness and density in 5 grassland cover types (n = 97) in the tallgrass prairie region of eastern South Dakota and western Minnesota, 2001–2004. Grassland bird species richness was significantly higher in native sod prairies than it was in all planted cover types except warm-season mixes. Grasslands dominated by exotic species did not support as many grassland bird species or have species densities as high as grasslands …

Dietery Response Of Sympatric Deer To Fire Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Liver Tissue, W. D. Walter, T. J. Zimmerman, D. M. Leslie Jr., J. A. Jenks Jan 2009

Dietery Response Of Sympatric Deer To Fire Using Stable Isotope Analysis Of Liver Tissue, W. D. Walter, T. J. Zimmerman, D. M. Leslie Jr., J. A. Jenks

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

Carbon (δ13C) and nitrogen (δ15N) isotopes in biological samples from large herbivores identify photosynthetic pathways (C3 vs. C4 ) of plants they consumed and can elucidate potential nutritional characteristics of dietary selection. Because large herbivores consume a diversity of forage types, δ13C and δ15N in their tissue can index ingested and assimilated diets through time. We assessed δ13C and δ15N in metabolically active liver tissue of sympatric mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus) and white-tailed deer (O. virginianus) to identify dietary disparity resulting from use of burned and unburned areas in a largely forested landscape. Interspecific variation in dietary disparity of deer …

The Memory Archive: Filmic Collaborations In Art And Anthropology, Alyssa Grossman, Selena Kimball Jan 2009

The Memory Archive: Filmic Collaborations In Art And Anthropology, Alyssa Grossman, Selena Kimball

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper forms the space for dialogue between a social anthropologist (Grossman) and a visual artist (Kimball), who have been collaborating on installations and films throughout the past decade. Our most recent films, including Into the Field (2005), and Objects of Memory (in progress) are shot on location in Grossman’s fieldwork sites in Romania, and incorporate sequences of stop-motion animation by Kimball. These films explore and question the conventional boundaries between art and anthropology. In this article, we examine the process of filming collaboratively in the field, and discuss the challenges and transformations we each undergo through sharing the literal …

Practice In Mediated Space: Engaging 'Hobbiton' And Its Visitors Through A Constructivist Media Anthropology, Robert Moses Peaslee Jan 2009

Practice In Mediated Space: Engaging 'Hobbiton' And Its Visitors Through A Constructivist Media Anthropology, Robert Moses Peaslee

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This paper calls for a (re)emphasis in site-specific, open-ended investigation of individual experience as a viable and valuable strategy across disciplines of the social sciences and the humanities, especially in the face of ongoing trends toward globality, hybridization, convergence, and destabilization of symbolic and material culture. The paper is particularly interested in reporting on the application of such methodologies toward investigating the media-tourism complex, a constellation of government, industrial, and personal activity which relies on globally mediated conceptions of place and practice and which represents a dynamic and ever-present field of symbolic and actual capital within which consumers operate and …

Glucocorticoid Physiology And Behavior During Life History Transitions In Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria Immutabilis), Rachel Seabury Sprague Jan 2009

Glucocorticoid Physiology And Behavior During Life History Transitions In Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria Immutabilis), Rachel Seabury Sprague

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

Organisms have different life history stages where their energetic priorities differ between the goals of growth, survival, and reproduction. Behavioral decisions within stages and in the transition between stages have significant repercussions for future success so the timing of behaviors is extremely important. In this dissertation, I ask: How do intrinsic and extrinsic factors control the timing of behavioral decisions during tradeoffs within life history stages (the tradeoff between reproduction and self maintenance in breeding adults), and transitions between life history stages (the transition to independence in young animals) in a pelagic seabird, the Laysan Albatross (Phoebastria immutabilis).

First, I …

Farmers' Perceptions And Reactions To Changes In Grain Elevator Size And Location In Central Montana, Jessie June Reynolds Jan 2009

Farmers' Perceptions And Reactions To Changes In Grain Elevator Size And Location In Central Montana, Jessie June Reynolds

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

In Central Montana, grain elevators serve as the primary market for wheat. What began in the 1910’s as numerous small grain elevators scattered at short intervals along the railroad has now been condensed to a few very large grain elevators at central points in the region, increasing their efficiency and reducing their costs as they can load larger trains in less time with fewer employees. For farmers, this often means reduced competition among elevators that buy grain and an increase in the distance they must transport their grain. Existing literature addressing agricultural markets and transportation costs typically employs a quantitative …

Characterization Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Virulence Factors: Plasticity Zone Macpdf Domain Family Protein Ct153 And Polymorphic Membrane Protein D, Lacey Diane Taylor Jan 2009

Characterization Of Chlamydia Trachomatis Virulence Factors: Plasticity Zone Macpdf Domain Family Protein Ct153 And Polymorphic Membrane Protein D, Lacey Diane Taylor

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

C. trachomatis is an obligate intracellular pathogen that is a leading cause of sexually transmitted diseases and blinding trachoma worldwide. Genes encoded in the plasticity zone (PZ) and the polymorphic membrane proteins (Pmps) represent major virulence determinants for chlamydiae. Elucidating their roles will be essential for the development of a vaccine to control human chlamydial diseases.

The PZ MACPF domain protein CT153 is expressed as a 91 kDa polypeptide in elementary bodies of all human serovariants suggesting a common function. CT153 is processed during infection into an N-terminal p42 and a C-terminal p59 that contains the MACPF domain. Similar processing …

Investigation Into Regulatory Mechanisms That Limit The Th2 Response In A Mouse Model Of Allergic Asthma, Teri Alyn Girtsman Jan 2009

Investigation Into Regulatory Mechanisms That Limit The Th2 Response In A Mouse Model Of Allergic Asthma, Teri Alyn Girtsman

Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers

The prevalence of asthma has markedly increased in recent decades. Asthma affects approximately ten percent of the population of the United States, and is the leading cause of childhood hospitalization. This epidemic has been attributed to air pollution, childhood immunizations and a more sanitary living environment. Allergic asthma is clinically characterized by airway hyperreactivity (AHR), increased mucus production and airway remodeling. On the cellular level, pulmonary eosinophilic infiltration and augmented levels of serum IgE arise as a consequence of a CD4+ Th2 cell response in the airway following exposure to allergen. It has been proposed that the chronic inflammation …

Ca125/Muc16 Is Dispensable For Mouse Development And Reproduction, Dong-Joo Cheon, Ying Wang, Jian Min Deng, Zhen Lu, Lianchun Xiao, Chun-Ming Chen, Robert C Bast, Richard R Behringer

Faculty, Staff and Student Publications

Cancer antigen 125 (CA125) is a blood biomarker that is routinely used to monitor the progression of human epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) and is encoded by MUC16, a member of the mucin gene family. The biological function of CA125/MUC16 and its potential role in EOC are poorly understood. Here we report the targeted disruption of the of the Muc16 gene in the mouse. To generate Muc16 knockout mice, 6.0 kb was deleted that included the majority of exon 3 and a portion of intron 3 and replaced with a lacZ reporter cassette. Loss of Muc16 protein expression suggests that Muc16 …
