Postcolonial discourses describe colonization as a process of invention to impose the will of a conquering West on "backward" societies. The will to power conjugated with the need for row materials served as the main catalysts. They put side by side a hegemonic intruder bent on duplicating itself, and a powerless and compliant native unable to react to the blitz of transformations. Hence, the master/slave or father/child relationships that describe the colonial framework. The task is to interrogate these generally accepted assumptions and binary oppositions. Although marginalized, the Congolese native was unwilling to become on object for the colonizer's gaze. …

Federal And State Policy Influence On Woody Biomass Utilization, Susan Balint
Federal And State Policy Influence On Woody Biomass Utilization, Susan Balint
Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports - Open
A considerable portion of public lands in the United States is at risk of uncharacteristically severe wildfires due to a history of fire suppression. Wildfires already have detrimental impacts on the landscape and on communities in the wildland-urban interface (WUI) due to unnatural and overstocked forests. Strategies to mitigate wildfire risk include mechanical thinning and prescribed burning in areas with high wildfire risk. The material removed is often of little or no economic value. Woody biomass utilization (WBU) could offset the costs of hazardous fuel treatments if removed material could be used for wood products, heat, or electricity production. However, …
Nutritional Immunomodulation As An Approach To Decreasing The Negative Effects Of Stress In Poultry Production, G. R. Huff, W. E. Huff, N. C. Rath
Nutritional Immunomodulation As An Approach To Decreasing The Negative Effects Of Stress In Poultry Production, G. R. Huff, W. E. Huff, N. C. Rath
Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science
Stress can lead to changes in the immune response resulting in both increased and decreased resistance to opportunistic bacterial pathogens. Growth-promoting antibiotics have been a major tool in modulating hostpathogen interactions and limiting clinical and subclinical bacterial infection in confined animal production. Regulatory pressures to limit antibiotic use in poultry production and recent international marketing agreements that prohibit treating poultry with antibiotics have limited the disease-fighting tools available to poultry and livestock producers, particularly in Europe. There is a need to evaluate potential antibiotic alternatives to improve both production and disease resistance in high-intensity food animal production. Nutritional approaches to …

Expelling Law Firm Partners, Douglas R. Richmond
Expelling Law Firm Partners, Douglas R. Richmond
Cleveland State Law Review
Law firm partners may be de-equitized or expelled by their firms in good times as well as lean. Such actions appear to be on the upswing. There are, however, relatively few cases on these subjects. The leading case, Holman v. Coie, is dated; the practice of law, at least in large law firms, has changed considerably in the thirty plus years since Holman was decided. Looking ahead, courts must carefully reanalyze the intra-firm duty of good faith and fair dealing. Rather than confining liability to cases of economic predation, courts should review partner de-equitizations and expulsions under either excluder or …
The Effectiveness Of Teaching Math Using Manipulatives In The Fourth Grade At Southwest Laurens Elementary, Denise D. Taylor
The Effectiveness Of Teaching Math Using Manipulatives In The Fourth Grade At Southwest Laurens Elementary, Denise D. Taylor
The Corinthian
I have taught math at Southwest Laurens Elementary for the past twenty years, my first twelve years as a second, third, fourth, fifth, and sixth grade Title I teacher and my last eight years as a self-contained regular education fourth grade teacher. For all twenty years I have taught at least one math class. One concern I have often had with the math curriculum at my school was the exclusion of many math manipulatives either because of lack of funding or because of the required time for preparation of lessons and instruction when including manipulatives. In this research project, I …

Devaluing Life And Education: The Effect Of Naturalism On The Field Of Education, Erin R. Reynolds
Devaluing Life And Education: The Effect Of Naturalism On The Field Of Education, Erin R. Reynolds
Senior Honors Theses
The rise of naturalism has affected every area of life. This thesis seeks to address the negative influence of naturalism in various educational settings, exposing the degradation of the secular society while challenging the Christian to pursue change. The United States’ participation in eugenics during the early 20th century caused a lack of regard for the lives of special education students. Regular education, specifically the science classroom, has been a target for the naturalistic point of view. Even the abolition of God in the public school setting stems from the rise of naturalism. Lastly, many scientists and professors who hold …
The Interdependent Relationship Between Internal And External Separation Of Powers, Gillian E. Metzger
The Interdependent Relationship Between Internal And External Separation Of Powers, Gillian E. Metzger
Emory Law Journal
In this Essay, I first describe internal separation of powers mechanisms and the constitutional role they can play. I next take up the question of whether these constraints are effective checks on Executive Branch overreaching and emphasize the mutually reinforcing relationship between such internal constraints and external checks on the Executive Branch. Finally, I discuss the general failure of current separation of powers doctrine to directly connect internal and external constraints and analyze whether including such a linkage would be appropriate.

The Effects Of Feeding Level And Stocking Density On The Growth And Feed Efficiency Of Himri Barbel Fry, Barbus Luteus (Heckel, 1843), Kaya Gökçek, Yalçin Tepe
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Two stocking densities (20 and 40 fry/80-l tank) with 4 feeding rates (2.5%, 5.0%, 7.5%, and 10.0% body weight/day) were used to determine the optimum feeding level for himri barbel fry during a 60-day culture period. Water quality parameters (temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, and total ammonia nitrogen) were monitored during the experiment. Final body weight and specific growth rate (SGR) was significantly lower with the 2.5% feeding rate than with the others, at both stocking densities; however, no significant differences were observed between the other feeding rates and between stocking densities. The best feed conversion ratio (FCR) of 1.37 was …

White muscle disease (WMD) is a world-wide nutritional disease of all animal species characterised by degeneration of skeletal and cardiac muscles. In the present study we determined the cardiac troponin I (cTnI) and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression in hearts of the lambs with WMD (n = 15). Eight clinically healthy lambs served as control. Creatine kinase (CK), creatine kinase MB (CK-MB), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities were analysed for both groups. cTnI levels were measured by a commercially available ELISA kit. Mean cTnI (10.49 ± 0.25 ng/ml), CK (261.16 ± 38.61 U/l), CK-MB (214.16 ± …

Vascular Ring Anomaly Associated With Right Aortic Arch In A German Shepherd Dog, Ebru Yalçin, Nureddi̇n Çeli̇mli̇, İ. Taci̇ Cangül, Ahmet Akkoç, Zeki̇ Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
A 12-week-old, intact, male German shepherd dog was presented with a history of regurgitation since weaning to solid food. The dog was emaciated, and the cervical esophagus of the animal was palpable as a flaccid and air-filled cavity. Contrast radiography of esophagus revealed contrast material accumulation in the thoracic esophagus craniodorsal to the heart. A diagnosis of vascular ring anomaly was made and surgical correction of the defect was decided. The dog died during the preoperative period despite supportive treatment in intensive care unit. Necropsy findings confirmed a diagnosis of persistent right aortic arch.

The Relationship Between Morphometric And Long Bone Measurements Of The Morkaraman Sheep, Hasan Alpak, Vedat Onar, Rifat Mutuş
The Relationship Between Morphometric And Long Bone Measurements Of The Morkaraman Sheep, Hasan Alpak, Vedat Onar, Rifat Mutuş
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
In this study, a total of 40 adult female Morkaraman sheep, a local Turkish breed, were used. After taking their body measurements and carcass weights, the meat was cut off the bones; the skeletal bones were then removed, macerated and every long bone weighed. Thereafter, morphometric measurements of the long bones were taken. The coefficients obtained from the correlation of osteometric measurements and morphological data were in general low (r < 0.600), though certain relationships were found to be significant. Regression of morphological variables on osteometric measurements was statistically significant. By this, regression formulas were obtained which can contribute to predict the visible morphology in zooarchaeological studies. Length measurements would be more suitable for predicting shoulder height than using width measurements of the long bone. On the other hand, body and carcass weights and chest circle would be determined more efficiently by measuring the width of long bones (Bp, Bd, SD). Furthermore, the humero-femoral index formula can be used to identify sheep in an archaeological bone collection of several animals.

Seasonal Changes In Condition, Hepatosomatic Index And Parasitism In Sterlet (Acipenser Ruthenus L.), Mirjana Lenhardt, Ivan Jaric, Predrag Cakic, Gorcin Cvijanovic, Zoran Gacic, Jelena Kolarevic
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Measurements of biomarker responses in fish from contaminated sites could provide valuable data for environmental risk assessment. Biomarkers are sensitive to both environmental pollution and confounding factors that are not related to pollution (e.g., season, nutritional status, and population density). Unfortunately, data about the latter group are scarce. Therefore, juvenile sterlet (Acipenser ruthenus L.) specimens were collected on a monthly basis from the Danube River from September 2002 through August 2003 to determine if seasonal changes exist in condition, hepatosomatic index, and parasitism. Fulton condition factor (FCF range: 0.27 - 0.79), hepatosomatic index (HSI range: 1.14 - 6.67) and Skrjabinopsolus …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The pharmacokinetics of gentamicin, tobramycin, amikacin, kanamycin, and apramycin were investigated after single intravenous administration in goats. their antimicrobial activity against 30 strains of Staphylococcus aureus isolates from goats was also studied. On the base of the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data, a comparison between antibiotics was made. All 5 antibiotics showed a marked high in vitro antibacterial activity. The lowest MIC_{90} values were those of amikacin and the highest one was of kanamycin. The ratios of Cmax/MIC showed that amikacin has an advantage of providing the highest values of the concentration/MIC_{90} ratio, as well of the time providing bactericidal levels, …
