Regulation Of Polyamine Metabolism In Transgenic Poplar Cell Cultures, Smita Cherry Jan 2009

Regulation Of Polyamine Metabolism In Transgenic Poplar Cell Cultures, Smita Cherry

Master's Theses and Capstones

Polyamines (PA) are naturally occurring low molecular weight aliphatic amines found in all living organisms and essential for their growth and development. The present study uses the tool of transgenic manipulation to elucidate the regulation of PA pathway in poplar cells. This study was divided into two segments; the first segment provides insight into biochemistry of a putrescine overproducing cell line (HP) that overexpresses a mouse ornithine decarboxylase (mODC) under 35S-CaMV promoter, with respect to different treatments. The second segment focused on creation and biochemical characterization of a cell line (SOS1) that overexpresses ODC/SAMDC from Plasmodium falciparum controlled by the …

Effect Of Cholinergic Deafferentation Of Prefrontal Cortex On Working Memory For Familiar And Novel Odors, Emily Carter Jan 2009

Effect Of Cholinergic Deafferentation Of Prefrontal Cortex On Working Memory For Familiar And Novel Odors, Emily Carter

Master's Theses and Capstones

The role of acetylcholine in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) in working memory was investigated in aged rats. Subjects with cholinergic lesions of the prelimbic portion of the mPFC (pACh-lx) or a sham lesion of the same region were trained on an odor delayed non-match to sample paradigm. The effects of prefrontal cholinergic depletion and aging were assessed in task variations that manipulated mnemonic demand and stimulus novelty.

pACh-lx animals were impaired relative to sham-lx animals at memory for familiar stimuli over delays. This global impairment was not dependent on the length of the delay, suggesting that aged pACh-lx animals …

A Survey Of School Counselor Attitudes Regarding Animal-Assisted Interventions, Sara Morrow Jan 2009

A Survey Of School Counselor Attitudes Regarding Animal-Assisted Interventions, Sara Morrow

Master's Theses and Capstones

Though animal-assisted interventions (AAI) have been used in many institutional settings, there is little evidence of AAI use in public schools. This study examined attitudes of school counselors regarding the incorporation of AAI into their practice.

The Pet Attitude Scale Modified (PAS-M) was used to measure attitudes towards animals and was incorporated into an online survey containing items addressing knowledge, interest, and perception of benefits and challenges associated with AAI. A sample of 220 public school counselors completed the online survey. Most considered themselves knowledgeable about AAI (73%), approximately half were interested in using AAI (56%), "reducing stress and anxiety" …

The Federal Art Project In Provincetown, Massachusetts: The Impact Of A Relief Program On An Established Art Colony, Whitney E. Smith Jan 2009

The Federal Art Project In Provincetown, Massachusetts: The Impact Of A Relief Program On An Established Art Colony, Whitney E. Smith

Master's Theses and Capstones

The Federal Art Project of the Works Progress Administration had a lasting impact on the American art scene. The experiences of artists associated with the Provincetown, Massachusetts art colony make evident the impact of the federal relief programs. The importance of the Provincetown art colony to the American art scene survived through the 1930s because of federal support. The focus on Provincetown and this smaller group of artists allows for comparisons to be made with the national society and art scene. The value of the Federal Art Project did not lie mainly in the finished artwork, but rather in the …

Grief, Grieving And Death, E Elaine Andrews-Ahearn Jan 2009

Grief, Grieving And Death, E Elaine Andrews-Ahearn

Master's Theses and Capstones

Grief is a journey one can only take alone. There is no rehearsal for it, no primer courses, it cannot be measured or timed. No one can do it with you, or for you. There is never an end, completion, finish line. There is not one prescribed way to do it, nor is there a tidy process. Grief is messy. Most importantly, grief is something that no one ever escapes. It surrounds us all the time, it is layered in our lives, permeates the atmosphere. It is ubiquitous. There are many types and degrees of grief; there are deep pockets …

Examination Of The Internal Morphology Of The Ixodid Tick, Amblyomma Maculatum Koch, (Acari: Ixodidae); A “How-To” Pictorial Dissection Guide, K. T. Edward, J. Goddard, A. S. Varela-Stokes Jan 2009

Examination Of The Internal Morphology Of The Ixodid Tick, Amblyomma Maculatum Koch, (Acari: Ixodidae); A “How-To” Pictorial Dissection Guide, K. T. Edward, J. Goddard, A. S. Varela-Stokes

Midsouth Entomologist

There is inadequate documentation of how to dissect ticks, a process required for many tick and disease studies. While the literature may contain numerous line drawings and instructions describing the process, none is adequate for the novice tick dissector. We present a “how-to” description and pictorial essay outlining our approach to tick dissection. The ticks used in this study were adult male and female Gulf Coast ticks, Amblyomma maculatum Koch, though the methods described herein could be applied to any species. None of the A. maculatum specimens we dissected adequately demonstrated ovaries, so we used one female A. americanum L.tick …

The Role Of Frizzled-1 And Frizzled-3 In Olfactory Sensory Neuronal Targeting, Mina Safain Jan 2009

The Role Of Frizzled-1 And Frizzled-3 In Olfactory Sensory Neuronal Targeting, Mina Safain

Yale Medicine Thesis Digital Library

THE ROLE OF FRIZZLED-1 AND FRIZZLED-3 IN OLFACTORY SENSORY NEURONAL TARGETING. Mina G. Safain. Department of Neurosurgery, Yale University School of Medicine, New Haven, CT. While most areas of the brain do not exhibit profound neurogenesis or continuing synaptogenesis in the adult, there are notable exceptions which include the olfactory and hippocampal regions of the nervous system. In the olfactory system the olfactory sensory neurons continually turn over and extend their axons into the olfactory bulb in a highly precise manner. Some preliminary data exists that suggests the presence of Wnt and Frizzled (Fz) family members in the primary olfactory …

"Who's The Man?": Masculinities Studies, Terry Stops, And Police Training, Frank Rudy Cooper Jan 2009

"Who's The Man?": Masculinities Studies, Terry Stops, And Police Training, Frank Rudy Cooper

Scholarly Works

In this article, Professor Frank Rudy Cooper examines how masculinity contests specifically, and masculinities studies generally, affect policing. He reviews the hegemonic masculinities school of thought and identifies the following background principles of the hegemonic pattern of masculinities in the United States: (1) men's concern with the opinions of other men; (2) anxiety over whether one has proved one's manhood; (3) a competitiveness reflected in a need to dominate other men and a general aggressiveness; and (4) a denigration of contrast figures reflected in a repudiation of femininity and homosexuality as well as subordination of racial minorities. Then he identifies …

Faithful Hermeneutics, Francis J. Mootz Iii Jan 2009

Faithful Hermeneutics, Francis J. Mootz Iii

Scholarly Works

This article was presented at the Annual Meeting of the Association of American Law Schools on January 9, 2009 as part of a panel on "Scriptural and Constitutional Hermeneutics." The panel was co-sponsored by the Law and Religion Section, Section on Jewish Law, and Section on Islamic Law, and the papers will be published by the Michigan State Law Review.

My article compares legal and religious hermeneutics by exploring the dual nature of what I term "faithful hermeneutics." The ambiguity evoked by this phrase is intentional. On one hand, it suggests an investigation of the relationship between legal and religious …

Apexification Of Nonvital Immature Mandibular Premolars Using Two Different Techniques, Ping-Han Wen, Ji-Uei Liou, Bor-Ren Duh

Journal of Dental Sciences

The purpose of this report was to present two cases of mandibular premolars with necrotic pulp and open apices treated with two different techniques. The first case was a 20-year-old female whose teeth 35 and 45 were diagnosed with pulpal necrosis and chronic apical periodontitis, possibly resulting from dens evaginatus. Traditional apexification with Ca(OH)2 was chosen; however, teeth 35 and 45 fractured after 2 and 9 months, respectively. The second case was an 11-year-old boy whose tooth 45 was diagnosed with necrotic pulp and a chronic apical abscess, possibly resulting from dens evaginatus. The mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) barrier technique …

Altruism And Intermediation In The Market For Babies, Kimberly D. Krawiec Jan 2009

Altruism And Intermediation In The Market For Babies, Kimberly D. Krawiec

Washington and Lee Law Review

Central to every legal system is the principle that certain items are offlimits to commercial exchange. In theory, babies are one such sacred object. This supposed ban on baby selling has been lamented by those who view commercial markets as the most efficient means of allocating resources, and defended by those who contend that commercial markets in parental rights commodify human beings, compromise individual dignity, or jeopardize fundamental values. However, the supposed and much-discussed baby selling ban does not, and is not intended to, eliminate commercial transactions in children. Instead, it is an asymmetric legal restriction that limits the ability …

Articles

In this review, antimicrobials from a range of plant, animal, and microbial sources are reviewed 10 along with their potential applications in food systems. Chemical and biochemical antimicrobial 11 compounds derived from these natural sources and their activity against a range of pathogenic and 12 spoilage microorganisms pertinent to food, together with their effects on food organoleptic proper- 13 ties, are outlined. Factors influencing the antimicrobial activity of such agents are discussed 14 including extraction methods, molecular weight, and agent origin. These issues are considered in 15 conjunction with the latest developments in the quantification of the minimum inhibitory (and …

BACKGROUND: Glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) is the most aggressive primary brain tumor that carries a 5-y survival rate of 5%. Attempts at eliciting a clinically relevant anti-GBM immune response in brain tumor patients have met with limited success, which is due to brain immune privilege, tumor immune evasion, and a paucity of dendritic cells (DCs) within the central nervous system. Herein we uncovered a novel pathway for the activation of an effective anti-GBM immune response mediated by high-mobility-group box 1 (HMGB1), an alarmin protein released from dying tumor cells, which acts as an endogenous ligand for Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) signaling …
