Meaning Constitution Analysis: A Phenomenological Approach To Research In Human Sciences, Roger B. Sages, Jonas Lundsten Jan 2009

Meaning Constitution Analysis: A Phenomenological Approach To Research In Human Sciences, Roger B. Sages, Jonas Lundsten

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Each and every thought, word, feeling or action of a person harbor a richness of meaning, opening on all the possible worlds accessible for him/her. A vision on those possible worlds, those open possibilities of action, should be of great interest for human science research. We believe that the phenomenological thinking of Edmund Husserl, reworked to adapt to the modern conception of the human sciences, can allow such an understanding of a person or a more or less large group, giving not a static picture of his mind, but a dynamic view of the ongoing process of constitution of meaning. …

Beyond Indigenization: International Dissemination Of Research By Majority-World Psychologists, John G. Adair, Yoshi Kashima, Maria Regina Maluf, Janak Pandey

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Analyses of the affiliations of authors of articles published in targeted samples of North American and international journals revealed trends toward increasing international publication by psychologists from countries outside the U.S., i.e., from countries in the rest of the world (ROW). Relatively few of these ROW publications came from psychologists from developing countries. Because developing countries are most numerous and represent the majority of the people in the world, their contribution to the world of psychology is important. Following a summary presentation of data for each journal for psychologists from East Asia, Latin America and the Caribbean, and South Asia …

Asca Code Of Ethics And The Relevance Of Eastern Ethical Theories, Amy Cook, Rick Houser Jan 2009

Asca Code Of Ethics And The Relevance Of Eastern Ethical Theories, Amy Cook, Rick Houser

Counseling, School Psychology & Sport Faculty Publication Series

As schools become increasingly diverse through immigration and growth of minority groups, it is important that school counselors incorporate culturally sensitive ethical decision-making in their practice. The use of Western ethical theories in the application of professional codes of ethics provides a specific perspective in ethical decision- making, but may not provide school counselors with a broad cultural perspective. We discuss the use of Eastern theories of ethics (Taoism and Hinduism) and their relevance to the ASCA Ethical Standards for School Counselors to inform school counselors’ work with Asian immigrant students.

Developing Creative Writing Skills In Early Childhood: A Case Study From Pakistan, Nilofar Vazir, Shairoz Ismail

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

The study explores how a teacher of Early Childhood teaches young children creative writing skills in a community-based school in Karachi, Pakistan. A qualitative case study method was used to examine the practices of the teacher and four early years’ learners (seven to eight years). Data was generated through semi-structured interviews; classroom observations and document analysis. Findings reveal that current practices of teaching and learning creative writing as development of language and literacy skills are highly influenced by how the teacher herself perceives creativity and creative writing in young learners. The teacher selects the topic for the children to write …

Circle : A Relationship-Based Dialogic Approach To Growing Out Of Racism : A Project Based Upon An Investigtion With The Partnership For Latino Success, Leominister, Massachusetts, Kristin Elaine Pinto-Wilson

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This study was undertaken to discover whether Circle could be used to foster individual and collective transformation regarding issues of racism. The director for the Partnership for Latino Success designed and implemented a dialogue series called "Changing the World by Changing Ourselves" for individuals to engage in a Circle journey about racism in daily life, relationships, and the community. The dialogues focused on microaggressions, relearning relationships and engaging in meaningful collaborations, and removing shame and blame from social change efforts. This researcher engaged in the dialogue series as a participant/observer and interviewed eight individuals who participated in at least two …

Values And Value Creation In Public-Private Transactions , Nestor M. Davidson Jan 2009

Values And Value Creation In Public-Private Transactions , Nestor M. Davidson

Faculty Scholarship

Scholars have developed a significant body of literature exploring the work of deal lawyers with the essential insight that attorneys acting as transaction-cost engineers have unique potential to add to the overall value of deals. This value-creation literature has traditionally made two foundational assumptions about the role of the state in transactional law. First, scholars have assumed that regulation is essentially irrelevant to transacting-that from the deal lawyer's perspective, the government is a factor only to the extent that the state will enforce private agreements. Second, scholars have assumed that private parties uniformly view public policy as a constraint in …

Compulsive Hoarding In Children: Six Case Studies, Edward H. Plimpton, Randy O. Frost, Brianna C. Abbey, Whitney Dorer

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Semi-structured interviews were conducted with the parents of six children who showed signs of compulsive hoarding. The cases revealed a wide variety of hoarding behaviors. Hoarding manifested in difficulties in discarding and maintaining control over possessions. Few cases had problems with clutter or excessive acquisition. In three cases hoarding was episodic and stress-related. Most of the cases showed overlapping ADHD symptoms and a majority demonstrated problems with perfectionism. Only two had clear obsessive-compulsive disorder, although concerns about others touching or moving possessions, which was present in all of the cases, may represent a form of ordering and arranging compulsions. None …

Modeling And Experiments In Microchannels For The Separation And Detection Of Bacteria Using Antibody-Coated Filter And Quantum Dots, Narendra Sharma Jan 2009

Modeling And Experiments In Microchannels For The Separation And Detection Of Bacteria Using Antibody-Coated Filter And Quantum Dots, Narendra Sharma

Open Access Dissertations

Capture and detection of biomarkers for organisms is an important aspect in the design of a Lab-on-a-Chip (LOC). In this research, modeling and experiments were conducted to separate, capture and detect E. coli K12 bacteria from water samples using microchannels. Microchannels were fabricated using the soft lithography technique. The bacteria were separated from the sample and captured at a polyester filter whose surface was modified by attaching functional groups that had affinity for antibodies specific to E. coli K12. The bacteria bound to the functionalized filter were then tagged with quantum dots conjugated with E. coli K12-specific antibodies for detection …

Online Bayesian Analysis, Ruibin Xi, Yongjin Kim, Nan Lin, Yixin Chen, Gruia-Catalin Roman Jan 2009

Online Bayesian Analysis, Ruibin Xi, Yongjin Kim, Nan Lin, Yixin Chen, Gruia-Catalin Roman

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

In the last few years, there has been active research on aggregating advanced statistical measures in multidimensional data cubes from partitioned subsets of data. In this paper, we propose an online compression and aggregation scheme to support Bayesian estimations in data cubes based on the asymptotic properties of Bayesian statistics. In the proposed approach, we compress each data segment by retaining only the model parameters and a small amount of auxiliary measures. We then develop an aggregation formula that allows us to reconstruct the Bayesian estimation from partitioned segments with a small approximation error. We show that the Bayesian estimates …

Non-Programmers Identifying Functionality In Unfamiliar Code: Strategies And Barriers, Paul Gross, Caitlin Kelleher Jan 2009

Non-Programmers Identifying Functionality In Unfamiliar Code: Strategies And Barriers, Paul Gross, Caitlin Kelleher

All Computer Science and Engineering Research

Source code on the web is a widely available and potentially rich learning resource for non-programmers. However, unfamiliar code can be daunting to end-users without programming experience. This paper describes the results of an exploratory study in which we asked non-programmers to find and modify the code responsible for specific functionality within unfamiliar programs. We present two interacting models of how non-programmers approach this problem: the Task Process Model and the Landmark-Mapping model. Using these models, we describe code search strategies non-programmers employed and the difficulties they encountered. Finally, we propose guidelines for future programming environments that support non-programmers in …

Runx1 In Primitive Hematopoiesis And Characterization Of Hematopoietic Stem Cells In A Mouse Chronic Inflammatory Arthritis Model, Yunglin Ma Jan 2009

Runx1 In Primitive Hematopoiesis And Characterization Of Hematopoietic Stem Cells In A Mouse Chronic Inflammatory Arthritis Model, Yunglin Ma

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Hematopoietic cells are essential for growth and survival throughout adult life. Two different aspects of hematopoiesis are addressed in this dissertation. I. The regulation of primitive hematopoiesis by Runx1 and TGF-beta signaling. Primitive hematopoiesis, occurring exclusively in the yolk sac, is characterized by its transient nature. As the primitive hematopoiesis declines in the yolk sac, definitive hematopoietic progenitors generated in the yolk sac and/or embryo take over in blood cell production. Whether the transition from primitive to definitive hematopoietic program reflects a mere shift in hematopoietic sites or whether it is an actively regulated process is currently unknown. Runx1 is …

Mammalian Postcranial Evolution And Primate Extinction In The Middle Eocene Of North America, Rachel Dunn Jan 2009

Mammalian Postcranial Evolution And Primate Extinction In The Middle Eocene Of North America, Rachel Dunn

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Primates constituted a dominant part of the mammalian faunas of North America during the early and middle parts of the Eocene: 55-46 ma). Beginning in the Uintan North American Land Mammal Age: 46-42 ma) primates declined in diversity and abundance in the Rocky Mountain region. This decline has been linked to the recession of tropical rain forests out of northern latitudes at that time. Climatic change of this magnitude would presumably have an impact on the contemporary mammalian faunas, with reduction or extinction of forest groups like primates, but perhaps radiation of mammals that preferred more open habitats such as …

Mechanisms Of Feedback In The Visual System, Adam Eggebrecht Jan 2009

Mechanisms Of Feedback In The Visual System, Adam Eggebrecht

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Feedback is an ubiquitous feature of neural systems though there is little consensus on the roles of mechanisms involved with feedback. We set up an in vivo preparation to study and characterize an accessible and isolated feedback loop within the visual system of the leopard frog, Rana pipiens. We recorded extracellularly within the nucleus isthmi, a nucleus providing direct topographic feedback to the optic tectum, a nucleus that receives the vast majority of retinal output. The optic tectum and nucleus isthmi of the amphibian are homologous structures to the superior colliculus and parabigeminal nucleus in mammals, respectively. We formulated a …

A Quest For Meaning In Spontaneous Brain Activity - From Fmri To Electrophysiology To Complexity Science, Biyu He Jan 2009

A Quest For Meaning In Spontaneous Brain Activity - From Fmri To Electrophysiology To Complexity Science, Biyu He

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The brain is not a silent, complex input/output system waiting to be driven by external stimuli; instead, it is a closed, self-referential system operating on its own with sensory information modulating rather than determining its activity. Ongoing spontaneous brain activity costs the majority of the brain's energy budget, maintains the brain's functional architecture, and makes predictions about the environment and the future. I have completed three separate studies on the functional significance and the organization of spontaneous brain activity. The first study showed that strokes disrupt large-scale network coherence in the spontaneous functional magnetic resonance imaging: fMRI) signals, and that …
