Effect Of Hydrogen Peroxide In The Scald Tank On The Microbial Count Of Pork Skin, A. S. De Mello Jr., R. O. Roca

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) (50% v/v) on pork skin microbial populations. Forty-eight crossbred hogs were analyzed after dehairing and 30 during chilling. Three different concentrations of hydrogen peroxide were added to the scalding water (0.01, 0.05 and 0.1% of the total capacity of the scald tank). In treatment I no addition of H2O2 was applied while, in treatment II, H2O2 was added at 0 min and, in treatment III, it was added at 0, 30 and 60 min. Both treatments …

Performance And Digestibility Characteristics Of Finishing Diets Containing Distillers Grains, Composites Of Corn Processing Coproducts, Or Supplemental Corn Oil, K. J. Vander Pol, Matt K. Luebbe, G. I. Crawford, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein Jan 2009

Performance And Digestibility Characteristics Of Finishing Diets Containing Distillers Grains, Composites Of Corn Processing Coproducts, Or Supplemental Corn Oil, K. J. Vander Pol, Matt K. Luebbe, G. I. Crawford, Galen E. Erickson, Terry J. Klopfenstein

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Three experiments evaluated the lipids in distillers grains plus solubles compared with corn or other sources of lipid in finishing diets. Experiment 1 utilized 60 individually fed yearling heifers (349 ± 34 kg) fed treatments consisting of 0, 20, or 40% (DM basis) wet distillers grains plus solubles (WDGS), or 0, 2.5, or 5.0% (DM basis) corn oil in a finishing diet based on high-moisture corn (HMC) and dry-rolled corn (DRC). Cattle fed 20 and 40% WDGS had greater (P < 0.10) G:F than cattle fed 0% WDGS. Cattle fed the 5.0% corn oil had lower overall performance than cattle fed the other diets. Results from Exp. 1 indicated that adding fat from WDGS improves performance, whereas supplementing 5.0% corn oil depressed G:F, suggesting that the fat within WDGS is different than corn oil. Experiment 2 used 234 yearling steers (352 ± 16 kg) fed 1 of 5 treatments consisting of 20 or 40% (DM basis) dry distillers grains plus solubles (DDGS), 1.3% or 2.6% (DM basis) tallow, or HMC. All diets contained 20% (DM basis) wet corn gluten feed (WCGF) as a method of controlling acidosis. No differences between treatments for any performance parameters were observed in Exp. 2. The DDGS may be similar to tallow and HMC in finishing diets containing 20% WCGF. Experiment 3 used 5 Holstein steers equipped with ruminal and duodenal cannulas in a 5x5 Latin square design. Treatments were a 40% WDGS diet, 2 composites, one consisting of corn bran and corn gluten meal (COMP), and one consisting of corn bran, corn gluten meal, and corn oil (COMP + OIL), and 2 DRC-based diets supplemented with corn oil (CON + OIL) or not (CON). Cattle fed the WDGS diet had numerically lower rumen pH compared with cattle fed other treatments. Cattle fed WDGS had greater (P < 0.10) molar proportions of propionate, lower (P < 0.10) acetate:propionate ratios, greater (P < 0.10) total tract fat digestion, and a greater (P < 0.10) proportion of unsaturated fatty acids reaching the duodenum than cattle fed other treatments. Therefore, the higher energy value of WDGS compared with corn may be due to more propionate production, higher fat digestibility, and more unsaturated fatty acids reaching the duodenum.

Heart Frontal Section And Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Robin Kang Jan 2009

Heart Frontal Section And Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy, Robin Kang

Theses

The heart is one of the most vital and complex organs in the body. However, most of the existing heart animations focus on showing the outer surface of a beating heart, and attempt to simulate its function with its outer views. This thesis model, however, focuses on the inner structure of the heart in order to provide detailed visualizations of different parts of the heart, their functions and the related disease. This thesis model has been created by using a real human heart provided by the Rochester Institute of Technology, as well as published material about the inside structure of …

From Banners To Youtube: Using The Rear-View Mirror To Look At The Future Of Internet Advertising, Susan Barnes, Neil Hair

Articles

In twelve short years, Internet advertising has evolved from banners to experiential promotions. In the beginning advertisers viewed the Internet in similar ways as they considered traditional media (television, newspaper, magazines). The idea of using a new medium like an older one, was described by McLuhan's concept of the rear view mirror. This article describes the history of Internet advertising from 1994 to 2006 by looking back to understand the future direction of Internet advertising.

Exploring Prayer Contexts And Health Outcomes: From The Chair To The Pew, E. James Baesler, Kevin Ladd

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

Prayer in personal, interpersonal, small, and large group contexts is described in relationship to physical, psychological, and spiritual health. A sample of college and middle-aged adults (N = 189) completed cross-sectional surveys. Quantitative analyses revealed that prayer in all contexts predicted higher levels of spiritual health, and that the strongest prayer predictors of health were: large group prayer for mental health, and private and large group prayer for spiritual health. Qualitative results revealed that prayers for physical health in close personal relationships, and table blessing prayers among family members, were two of the most common types of prayer. Suggestions for …

Optimal Timing Of Legal Intervention: The Role Of Timing Rules, Barbara Luppi, Francesco Parisi Jan 2009

Optimal Timing Of Legal Intervention: The Role Of Timing Rules, Barbara Luppi, Francesco Parisi

Articles

In a recent article, Gersen and Posner (2007) examined the role of timing rules in promoting the optimal timing of legislative action. In this brief essay, we address the issue of optimal timing of lawmaking through the lens of option theory. We provide a formalization of seven alternative timing rules and evaluate the option value of those legislative strategies. This formalization allows us to evaluate the desirability of alternative timing rules in different regulatory environments.

Irb Guidance: The No Man's Land Of Tax Code Interpretation, Kristin Hickman Jan 2009

Irb Guidance: The No Man's Land Of Tax Code Interpretation, Kristin Hickman

Articles

This Symposium Essay compares current patterns and practices surrounding IRS utilization of IRB guidance (revenue rulings, revenue procedures, and notices) with administrative law doctrine concerning informal agency guidance documents. In administrative law jurisprudence, the distinction between legislative and interpretative rules (and thus whether the Administrative Procedure Act requires public notice and comment procedures) and the determination of whether Chevron or Skidmore provides the appropriate evaluative standard on judicial review both ultimately turn on whether the agency legal interpretation at issue carries the force and effect of law. The precise contours of the force of law concept are unclear, as is …

Ross And Olivecrona On Rights, Brian H. Bix Jan 2009

Ross And Olivecrona On Rights, Brian H. Bix

Articles

Scandinavian legal realism was a movement of the early and middle decades of the 20th century, which paralleled the American legal realist movement, while presenting a more skeptical challenge to legal reasoning and discourse. The present paper was written for a forthcoming Oxford University Press collection on the Scandinavian realists. The approach to jurisprudence of Scandinavian realists Alf Ross and Karl Olivecrona was simultaneously simple and radical: they wanted to rid our thinking about law of all the mystifying references to abstract concepts and metaphysical entities. This paper offers a critical overview of Ross's and Olivecrona's views on legal rights, …

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to formulate early indicators for children at high risk for speech and language disorders. Indicators are important for acquisition of language from birth to age five. Method: Five children were assessed twice. The first assessment occurred when children were between 18 and 22 months of age. Articulation rate, syllable structure level, and phonetic inventory were calculated based on a twenty-minute speech sample collected while the child played with mother. The second assessment occurred when children were five years old. A standardized articulation test, the Goldman Fristoe Test of Articulation-2, and a phonological awareness …

From Formal Separation To Functional Equivalence: Tribal-Federal Dual Sovereignty And The Sixth Amendment Right To Counsel, Alex Hagen Jan 2009

From Formal Separation To Functional Equivalence: Tribal-Federal Dual Sovereignty And The Sixth Amendment Right To Counsel, Alex Hagen

Faculty Publications

The dual sovereignty doctrine reflects the bifurcated structure of the federal system, but it also incorporates individual Indian tribes as unique third sovereigns within that system. Recently, the doctrine's application to the Sixth Amendment right to counsel has split the federal circuit courts and revealed a conflict between adhering to the dual sovereignty principle and protecting the rights of an individual who is subject to simultaneous prosecutions. Yet the standard analysis of this conflict fails to account for the presence of tribal sovereigns and the unique position in which tribal members sit as citizens of tribal polities and the United …

Habitat Use By The Southeastern Beach Mouse (Peromyscus Polionotus Niveiventris) At Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida, Kathryn Simmons

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Successful recovery of the federally threatened southeastern beach mouse (Peromyscus polionotus niveiventris) depends in part on an understanding of their habitat requirements. I studied habitat use by beach mice at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Florida from March 2005 until March 2006. I livetrapped six grids, three on coastal dunes and three within scrub located inland from the coast. On each grid and trap station, I quantified the extent of bare ground, woody vegetation, non-woody vegetation, height of vegetation, and percentage of coarse sand in the surface soil. I assessed trap success relative to these habitat variables using linear and …

Application Of Alkylsilane Self-Assembled Monolayers For Cell Patterning And Development Of Biolocial Microelectromechanical Systems, Kerry Wilson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Advances in microfabrication and surface chemistry techniques have provided a new paradigm for the creation of in vitro systems for studying problems in biology and medicine in ways that were previously not practical. The ability to create devices with micro- to nano-scale dimensions provides the opportunity to non-invasively interrogate and monitor biological cells and tissue in large arrays and in a high-throughput manner. These systems hold the potential to, in time, revolutionize the way problems in biology and medicine are studied in the form of point-of-care devices, lab-on-chip devices, and biological microelectromechanical systems (BioMEMS). With new in vitro models, it …

Qualitative Freshwater Mussel Survey Of The South Fork Spring River, Missouri And Arkansas, H. C. Martin, John L. Harris, Alan D. Christian

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A qualitative freshwater mussel survey was performed in the South Fork Spring River, Arkansas between May 13 and June 20, 2006 to assess community composition, density, and the presence of endangered mussel species (Family Unionidae). Twenty-one species from 460 individuals of mussels were collected using qualitative methods. Of those 21 species, 11 were ranked as S1, S2, or S3 using rankings established by the Arkansas Natural Heritage Commission Heritage Program. Three species, Amblema plicata (Say 1817), Lampsilis reeveiana (Call 1887), and Ptychobranchus occidentalis (Conrad 1836), comprised 48% of all mussels collected with 12%, 15%, and 21%, respectively. Mussel abundance within …
