Aid Effectiveness In Insecure Areas, Sharmala Naidoo
The Journal of Conventional Weapons Destruction
The issue of aid effectiveness in conflict-affected and insecure areas is receiving increased attention within the development community. The Paris Declaration on Aid EffectivenessPrinciples for Good International Engagement in Fragile States and Situations and the recent Accra Agenda for Action signal donor and recipient commitment to improve the effectiveness of aid. Conflict-affected countries often present aid-effectiveness challenges that require special attention—but what does this mean for countries affected by mines and explosive remnants of war? This article examines recent developments, highlighting some implications for mine action.

Determination Of 6-Benzylthioinosine In Mouse And Human Plasma By Liquid Chromatography–Tandem Mass Spectrometry, Lan Li, Yan Xu, David N. Wald, William Tse
Chemistry Faculty Publications
This paper described the development and validation of a liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC–MS/MS) method for the quantitative determination of 6-benzylthioinosine (6BT), a novel myeloid leukemia differentiation-inducing agent, in mouse and human plasma. In this method, 2-amino-6-benzylthioinosine (2A6BT) was used as internal standard and ethyl acetate was used as organic solvent for the extraction of 6BT and internal standard from plasma samples. The extracted samples were separated on YMC ODS-AQ® column (2.0 mm × 50 mm), and the eluates from the column were monitored by the positive-electrospray-ionization tandem mass spectrometer (ESI+-MS/MS). Quantification of 6BT by internal calibration with 2A6BT was …

Dilute Sulfuric Acid Pretreatment Of Switchgrass In Microwave Reactor For Biofuel Conversion: An Investigation Of Yields, Kinetics,, Oscar Martin
Theses and Dissertations
Lignocellulosic materials provide a raw material source for biofuel conversion and offer several advantages over fossil fuels- usage of a renewable resource, reduced greenhouse emissions, a decreased dependence on foreign oil, and stimulation of the agricultural sector. However, a primary technological challenge in converting lignocellulosic biomass into fuel is overcoming the recalcitrance of its matrix to enzymatic hydrolysis. To overcome these problems for chemical processing, naturally occurring cellulose biomass must be pretreated before it can be further processed using enzymatic hydrolysis or bioconversion. The goal of this work was to develop a model that predicts the glucose yield (pretreatment and …

Nonhomologous End-Joining: Tdp1-Mediated Processing, Atm-Mediated Signaling, Amy Hawkins
Nonhomologous End-Joining: Tdp1-Mediated Processing, Atm-Mediated Signaling, Amy Hawkins
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis investigates two separate features of nonhomologous end-joining (NHEJ) DNA repair: end processing, and DNA repair kinase signaling. DNA end processing was investigated in a mouse model of hereditary spinocerebellar ataxia with axonal neuropathy (SCAN1), a congenital neurodegenerative disease. SCAN1 is caused by a homozygous H493R mutation in the active site of tyrosyl-DNA phosphodiesterase (TDP1). To address how the H493R mutation elicits the specific pathologies of SCAN1 and to further elucidate the role of TDP1 in processing DNA end modifications, we generated a Tdp1 knockout mouse and characterized their behavior and specific repair deficiencies in extracts of embryonic fibroblasts …

Interactions Between Connected Half-Sarcomeres Produce Emergent Mechanical Behavior In A Mathematical Model Of Muscle, Kenneth S. Campbell
Interactions Between Connected Half-Sarcomeres Produce Emergent Mechanical Behavior In A Mathematical Model Of Muscle, Kenneth S. Campbell
Physiology Faculty Publications
Most reductionist theories of muscle attribute a fiber's mechanical properties to the scaled behavior of a single half-sarcomere. Mathematical models of this type can explain many of the known mechanical properties of muscle but have to incorporate a passive mechanical component that becomes approximately 300% stiffer in activating conditions to reproduce the force response elicited by stretching a fast mammalian muscle fiber. The available experimental data suggests that titin filaments, which are the mostly likely source of the passive component, become at most approximately 30% stiffer in saturating Ca2+ solutions. The work described in this manuscript used computer modeling to …

Memory - Ness: The Collaboration Between A Library And Museum, Kelsey Doughty
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Picture a historical library and a historical art museum coming together to challenge the interaction between each other to help experience, explore, and discover the past within the present. While it sounds like a good idea, it is rare to see a library and museum under one roof.
With the increasing population of tourists looking to visit places and buildings that reconnect with history, there is a higher demand for places to be able to 're-live the past' through art and literature. People enjoy visiting places where history was made and where it becomes part of a city's identity. With …
Monkey Pots: Inferring Meaning Through Time And Space From Function, Decoration, And Context, Benjamin Jacob Skousen
Monkey Pots: Inferring Meaning Through Time And Space From Function, Decoration, And Context, Benjamin Jacob Skousen
Theses and Dissertations
In this thesis, I interpret the meaning of “monkey pots,” a pottery vessel found throughout the Maya world. This study looks at three kinds of monkey pots recovered from the Mirador Basin. Carmelita Incised and Zacatal Polychrome monkey pots date to the Late Classic period (AD 680-800) and were manufactured in the Basin; Telchac Composite monkey pots date to the Terminal Classic period (AD 780-830) and were made in the Usumacinta River region. These monkey pots are described, followed by an analysis and comparison of the function, the monkey genus on the vessels, and the contexts from which the vessels …

Part 2: Professional Development Curriculum: Integrating Molecular Biology And Microbiology Into The Existing Secondary Biology Curricula, Mary Ruth Greer
Theses and Dissertations
PART 1: Thirty-one medicinal plant species from Hawaii, Morocco, and the Sonoran Desert, USA have been shown in past studies to be highly inhibitory to pathogenic bacteria, fungi, and certain cancer cell lines. However, none were tested for antiviral activity. Acetone and methanol extracts from these species were bio-assayed for antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV 1 and HSV 2) and for cytotoxicity to the Vero C1008 cell line. Extracts from these species were tested in vitro for antiviral activity using an immunoperoxidase mini-plaque reduction assay to detect viral structural protein synthesis. Sulforhodamine B and …
