Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Numeracy
This paper compares the academic performance of students in three similar elementary statistics courses taught by the same instructor, but with the lab component differing among the three. One course is traditionally taught without a lab component; the second with a lab component using scenarios and an extensive use of technology, but without explicit coordination between lab and lecture; and the third using a lab component with an extensive use of technology that carefully coordinates the lab with the lecture. Extensive use of technology means, in this context, using Minitab software in the lab section, doing homework and quizzes using …

Taking The Sustainable Agriculture Challenge: Recontextualizing Rural Sociology, Betty L. Wells
Taking The Sustainable Agriculture Challenge: Recontextualizing Rural Sociology, Betty L. Wells
Journal of Rural Social Sciences
Agroecosystems Analysis (SusAg 509), a required course for all majors in Iowa State University’s Graduate Program in Sustainable Agriculture, provides an immersion experience in the situated challenges of sustainable agriculture. The field portion of SusAg 509, which takes place every year during the first two weeks of August, brings students face-to-face with different understandings of sustainability and the diverse complexity of Midwestern agriculture. Dialogue and reflection turn the raw stuff of experience into learning, as students discover the power and validity of multiple perspectives. More than two dozen site visits help make abstract concepts, such as the economy and social …

Voiding Dysfunction In Cerebellar Stroke: A Casereport, Chi-Chung Ho, Yu-Hui Huang, Su-Ju Tsai, Ko-Shin Jian, Yung-Liang Kao, Liu-Ing Bih
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Animal studies have suggested that the cerebellum plays an inhibitory role in the collecting phase and a facilitatory role in the emptying phase of the voiding reflex in the micturition cycle.A 12 year old girl was admitted who complained of a headache and had a disturbance in consciousness after running in school. An emergent brain computed tomography scan showed massive bleeding over bilateral cerebellum hemispheres, vermis, and ventricles. An occipital craniotomy was performed to remove the hematoma. Simultaneously, an arterio-venous malformation was found and excised. She regained consciousness 3 weeks later, thereafter urine retention was noted as well as trunkal …

Is the analysis of patron–client networks still important to the understanding of developing country politics or has it now been overtaken by a focus on ‘social capital’? Drawing on seventeen country studies of the political environment for livestock policy in poor countries, this article concludes that although the nature of patronage has changed significantly, it remains highly relevant to the ways peasant interests are treated. Peasant populations were found either to have no clear connection to their political leaders or to be controlled by political clientage. Furthermore, communities ‘free’ of patron–client ties to the centre generally are not better represented …

Background: Previously we have shown that B cell receptor (BCR) expression and B cell receptor signaling pathways are important for the basal growth of B lymphoma cells. In particular we have shown that the activation of Syk, a non-src family protein tyrosine kinase and the mitogen activated protein kinases (MAPK), ERK and JNK that mediate BCR signals are required for the constitutive growth of B lymphoma cells. Since src family protein tyrosine kinases (SFKs) like Lyn are known to be needed for the phosphorylation of BCR co-receptors, Ig-alpha and Ig-beta, we hypothesized that one or more SFKs will be constitutively …

The Kyoto Protocol In A Global Perspective, Andreja Cirman, Polona Domadenik, Matjaž Koman, Tjaša Redek
Economic and Business Review
The global climate has changed notably since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution. Atmospheric concentrations of greenhouse gasses (GHG) have increased dramatically followed by an increase in global average temperature. In order to avoid negative potential outcomes of global warming, countries have adopted the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change that has so far been ratified by 192 countries. In 1997 the Kyoto Protocol, a binding GHG reduction plan, was adopted and entered into force in 2005. But several countries, including the USA, have had doubts about the potential negative consequences of the planned 5% global joint reduction of …
Climate Protection And Ocean Acidification : The Case For Immediate Action In International Law & Policy Negotiations, Carolyne Okeijn
Climate Protection And Ocean Acidification : The Case For Immediate Action In International Law & Policy Negotiations, Carolyne Okeijn
World Maritime University Dissertations
This dissertation discusses ocean acidification as an emerging priority in international climate protection processes within the UNFCCC and the IMO. It provides discussion in an area where there is currently a gap between ocean acidification science and corresponding action in law and policy processes. It builds the case for substantial, immediate action on CO2 within the context of negotiations at UNFCCC for the post-Kyoto climate regime. This dissertation contains an examination of the available science publications on ocean acidification and submissions made by leading ocean acidification experts at COP-15; references to “ocean acidification” in the IMO MEPC meeting protocols and …

This paper is concerned with the impact of urbanization in aquifer well-system located in the Municipal area of Arusha city, Tanzania. A system dynamic (SD) model was built under VENSIM PLE workbench from twenty-five years (1978-2003) physical and non-physical data to simulate their interactions and relations. This involved use of mathematics ideas and concepts in studying the physical and non – physical components separately, and finally putting them together in new form (model) and study their relations. After model was found to be structurally complete and simulate properly by using the model and unit check tool of VENSIMPLE, parametric calibration …
Managing A Creative Practice, Julie C. Barrett
Managing A Creative Practice, Julie C. Barrett
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
Myths and assumptions about creativity often lead us to believe that creativity is innate. Researchers find though, that we develop creative skills like any other ability, through opportunity, encouragement and practice. They also believe that most people fail to reach their creative potential, not because of lack of ability, but lack of opportunity. In this paper, I studied how creativity functions (specifically in terms of my own painting practice) and how it can be applied more flexibly. Certain factors, such as access to strong mentors, freedom to experiment, and readily available resources, help potentially exceptional minds find the passion to …

Assessments Of Spasticity By Hoffmann Reflex Parameters In Patients With Spinal Cord Injury, Juei-Hsiang Wang, Yen-Ho Wang, Chein-Wei Chang, Shin-Liang Pan, Che-Sheng Lin
Rehabilitation Practice and Science
Muscle spasticity is a common problem that affects patients who have suffered spinal cord injury (SCI). It can affect the motor skills, activities of daily living, and quality of life of these patients. The modified Ashworth scale (MAS) is a widely used clinical rating scale for spasticity, but its validity and reliability have been questioned. Much attention has been devoted to the evaluation of spasticity by using electrophysiological approaches. Increased excitation of motor neurons, exaggerated stretch reflex, decreased presynaptic inhibition, and reduced reciprocal inhibition have been found to be associated with spasticity. In several previous studies, the Hoffmann (H) reflex …

Chitin, a homopolimer, is the most abundant renewable natural resources after cellulose. Chitin and its derivatives hold many applications in agriculture, textile, pharmacy and medic. Chitin that extracted from waste shrimp shells by biological fermentation has better quality than chemical procees. Demineralization of chitin by biological procees use lactic acid as product of fermentation. Deproteinization of chitin use proteolytic activity of enzyme that produce by bacteria in fermentation. Lacto-bacillus acidophilus FNCC116 has been immobilized by entrapment methods and 2% sodium alginate in 0,2 M CaCl2 as the matric . The ability of immobilized Lacto-bacillus acidophilus FNCC116 cell in fermentation was …

Leasing Potential For Smes In Tanzania: Experience From Lessors And Lessees, Tobias A. Swai, Moyo Violet Ndonde
Business Management Review
Lease finance has been referred to as one of the best alternative sources of long-term finance for Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs). There is a lack of literature on the engagement of both lessors and lessees in relation to lease finance in Tanzania. The researchers employed seven case studies consisting of two lessors and five lessees, in order to present the current experience and perspectives of the leasing business in Tanzania. The findings suggest that the lease finance has potential in Tanzania based on the needs of SMEs. Good clientele, good suppliers and the availability of credit in a good …

BACKGROUND: Selection for exercise-adapted phenotypes in the Thoroughbred racehorse has provided a valuable model system to understand molecular responses to exercise in skeletal muscle. Exercise stimulates immediate early molecular responses as well as delayed responses during recovery, resulting in a return to homeostasis and enabling long term adaptation. Global mRNA expression during the immediate-response period has not previously been reported in skeletal muscle following exercise in any species. Also, global gene expression changes in equine skeletal muscle following exercise have not been reported. Therefore, to identify novel genes and key regulatory pathways responsible for exercise adaptation we have used equine-specific …
