Reconstructing The Dormant Commerce Clause Doctrine, Brannon P. Denning Nov 2008

Reconstructing The Dormant Commerce Clause Doctrine, Brannon P. Denning

William & Mary Law Review

In this Article, I argue that the alleged incoherence and unpredictability of the dormant Commerce Clause doctrine (DCCD) is rooted in the Supreme Court's search, through the years, for a stable set of rules enabling it to distinguish permissible from impermissible state regulations of interstate commerce and commercial actors. Its lack of success, the Article argues, is due in large part to the Court's inability to settle on the constitutional command the doctrine was to enforce. Historically, the Court would promulgate a set of rules, apply them for a time, then alter or modify them as the rules became unsatisfactory. …

Sensation Seeking And Visual Selective Attention In Adults With Hiv/Aids, David J. Hardy, Steven A. Castellon, Charles H. Hinkin, Andrew J. Levine, Mona N. Lam Nov 2008

Sensation Seeking And Visual Selective Attention In Adults With Hiv/Aids, David J. Hardy, Steven A. Castellon, Charles H. Hinkin, Andrew J. Levine, Mona N. Lam

Psychological Science Faculty Works

The association between sensation seeking and visual selective attention was examined in 31 adults with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Sensation seeking was measured with Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale Form V (SSS-V). Selective attention was assessed with a perceptual span task, where a target letter-character must be identified in a quickly presented array of nontarget letter-characters. As predicted, sensation seeking was strongly associated (R2 = .229) with perceptual span performance in the array size 12 condition, where selective attention demands were greatest, but not in the easier conditions. The Disinhibition, Boredom Susceptibility, and Experience Seeking subscales of the …

Procrastination, Deadlines, And Statutes Of Limitation, Andrew J. Wistrich Nov 2008

Procrastination, Deadlines, And Statutes Of Limitation, Andrew J. Wistrich

William & Mary Law Review

Statutes of limitation are deadlines. Although psychologists have discovered a great deal about how people respond to deadlines during the past thirty years, the basic structure of statutes of limitation has not changed since at least 1623. This Article explores the question of whether the received model of statutes of limitation remains optimal in light of what we now know about procrastination, the planning fallacy, loss aversion, intertemporal discounting, the student syndrome, and other features of human cognition. It concludes by suggesting a more modern approach to statutes of limitation that is based on a better understanding of how people …

Department of Psychology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

The Lewis (LEW) strain of rat appears more sensitive to nicotine than other strains in self-administration, conditioned place preference, and drug discrimination behavioral studies. The present study sought to further evaluate the behavioral effects of chronic nicotine treatment in the LEW strain by assessing spontaneous activity, which has consistently revealed sensitization to chronic nicotine administration in Sprague Dawley (SD) rats. High active and low active male and female LEW rats (N = 8 per group) were treated twice daily with either nicotine (0.4 mg/kg, sc) or vehicle for 14 consecutive days. Regardless of baseline activity level or sex, spontaneous activity …

Summer Sessions Breakdown Of Course Dates And Time, Paul Savory Nov 2008

Summer Sessions Breakdown Of Course Dates And Time, Paul Savory

Department of Industrial and Management Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

This report highlights an exhaustive analysis of the hundreds of Summer Session courses to develop an understanding of when they occur during the day and during which of the four academic terms. The analysis shows that the most popular time for scheduling courses is between 9:30 am and noon for each of the four summer session terms. Given the limited number of general purpose classrooms on campus, accommodating faculty preference for rooms, buildings, and computer equipment is sometimes not possible during the most in demand course times. The results also showcase the potential for having summer courses four-day per week …

Mixed Methods Approaches In Family Science Research, Vicki L. Plano Clark, Catherine Huddleston-Casas, Susan Churchill, Denise O'Neil Green, Amanda Garrett Nov 2008

Mixed Methods Approaches In Family Science Research, Vicki L. Plano Clark, Catherine Huddleston-Casas, Susan Churchill, Denise O'Neil Green, Amanda Garrett

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

The complex phenomena of interest to family scientists require the use of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Researchers across the social sciences are now turning to mixed methods designs that combine these two approaches. Mixed methods research has great promise for addressing family science topics, but only if researchers under¬stand the design options and procedures that accompany this methodological choice. Discussions of mixed methods in the family science literature are difficult to locate, and little has been written about how family scientists apply this approach in practice. This article presents an overview of mixed methods research, including its definition, terminology, and …

Review Of Joseba Gabilondo, Nazioaren Hondarrak: Euskal Literatura Garaikidearen Historia Postnazional Baterako Hastapenak, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers

In this book written in Basque, Joseba Gabilondo offers a panoramic view of Basque literature from 1898 until 2002, focusing primarily on contemporary narrative. The book consists of ten chapters that the author has previously published as articles in English, Basque and Spanish in the last fifteen years. The title, translated by the author on his web page (http://www.joseba.net) as Remnants of the Nation: Prolegomena to a Postnational History of Contemporary Basque Literature, calls attention to the main arguments that are developed in the book. As Gabilondo explains in the foreword, he uses the Basque word “hondarrak”—which means both “remnants” …

Extracellular Matrix Protein Orientation By Adsorption On Self-Assembled Monolayers Controls Nonviral Gene Delivery, Beth A. Duensing, Angela K. Pannier Nov 2008

Extracellular Matrix Protein Orientation By Adsorption On Self-Assembled Monolayers Controls Nonviral Gene Delivery, Beth A. Duensing, Angela K. Pannier

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Presentations and White Papers

To date, most efforts to understand and improve the efficiency of nonviral gene delivery have focused on altering the physicochemical properties of delivery systems and developing new delivery strategies. The importance of the cellular microenvironment in achieving successful nonviral gene transfer has not been thoroughly examined, though proteins of the extracellular matrix (ECM) mediate cell adhesion and serve to regulate cellular behavior that may, in turn, dictate the cellular responsiveness to nonviral gene delivery. Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of alkanethiols on gold were used to control adsorption of ECM molecules and thus control the architecture of the extracellular environment presented to …

Noninsulinoma Pancreatogenous Hypoglycemia Syndrome In A Saudi Male, Abdullah M. Karawagh, Layla S. Abdullah, Abdelhamid M. Gasim, Muntasir M. Abdelaziz Nov 2008

Noninsulinoma Pancreatogenous Hypoglycemia Syndrome In A Saudi Male, Abdullah M. Karawagh, Layla S. Abdullah, Abdelhamid M. Gasim, Muntasir M. Abdelaziz

Saudi Medical Journal

Nesidioblastosis is focal or diffuse islet hyperplasia leading to hyperinsulinism with subsequent hypoglycemia in the absence of insulinoma, usually described in neonates and infancy. We described the first adult case of nesidioblastosis in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf region. The diagnosis and treatment of the condition can be very difficult and challenging. Despite the fact that our patient responded initially to surgical treatment, his hypoglycemic symptoms occasionally recurred and needed adjunctive medical treatment. Although initially thought to affect only infants and children, cases of nesidioblastosis can affect adults and pose a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge to the clinicians.
