The Effects Of Intrinsic And Extrensic Factors On Floral Visitation Of Xanthosoma Undipes In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2008, Kirsten Martin
The Effects Of Intrinsic And Extrensic Factors On Floral Visitation Of Xanthosoma Undipes In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2008, Kirsten Martin
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Both intrinsic and extrinsic floral characteristics exert important influences on floral visitation. The average distance between flowering plants, the number of flowering plants, and the spadix temperature were assessed to determine the influence of these intrinsic and extrinsic floral factors on floral visitation in Xanthosoma undipes in Monteverde Costa Rica. Observations were made for seven nights in which the distances between all flowering plants, abundances of all morphospecies of arthropods present and spadix temperatures were taken. Both the number of plants in flower and the average distance between flowers did appear to have an affect on flower visitation among pollinators. …
Within-Crown Asynchrony Of Ficus Pertusa (Moraceae), November 2008, Hannah Lippe
Within-Crown Asynchrony Of Ficus Pertusa (Moraceae), November 2008, Hannah Lippe
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Well-supported theory says that populations of Ficus species reproduce asynchronously across populations and synchronously within individual trees. However, recent studies in the Monteverde area have found evidence for within-crown asynchrony for Ficus tuerckheimii, a large strangler fig, and hinted at within-crown asynchrony for Ficus pertusa, a small free-standing tree. I tested the prediction that fig tree populations are asynchronous and individuals are synchronous by looking at fifteen F. pertusa trees with fruits. I looked for microclimate effects on flowering synchrony as a result of uneven sun exposure within a crown. As predicted, the population was asynchronous, but 13 out of …
Presence Of Mucilage On Aerial Roots In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2008, Chase Kincaid
Presence Of Mucilage On Aerial Roots In Monteverde, Costa Rica, November 2008, Chase Kincaid
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Many hemiepiphytes produce aerial roots and some have mucilage on the growing tips of these roots. The purpose of this study was to determine if mucilage varies at different altitudes in the Monteverde Cloud Forest in Costa Rica. Mucilage may serve to protect the roots from the dry environments, or from altitudes more prone to fungal infections since it has both high water storing capacities and anti-fungal properties. Transects were run along different altitudes, and samples of plants’ mucilage were taken, measuring the weight and length of the mucilage. Monstera was the most common plant with mucilage found in the …
The Effect Of Hummingbird Feeders On The Pollen Loads And Diversity In Nectarivorous Bats (Glossophaginae) In A Tropical Cloud Forest, November 2008, Benjamin Juan Padilla
The Effect Of Hummingbird Feeders On The Pollen Loads And Diversity In Nectarivorous Bats (Glossophaginae) In A Tropical Cloud Forest, November 2008, Benjamin Juan Padilla
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Bats are some of the most important pollinators in tropical regions. I studied the effect of hummingbird feeders on pollen loads in nectarivorous bats in the Monteverde region. I mist netted bats at two locations Selvatura Hummingbird Garden (deemed high feeder density), and the Santa Elena Reserve (low feeder density). Pollen was removed from the bat’s back using clear scotch tape and placed directly onto microscope slides for examination. A Shannon-Weiner diversity index showed that there was a difference between the pollen diversities (Selvatura H’=5.47, Reserve H’= 4.63) although mean pollen diversity and overall pollen count were not different. These …
A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks
A Comparison Of Hemoparasite Loads Between Bats (F: Phyllostomidae) Of Different Feeding Guilds In San Luis, Costa Rica, November 2008, Rachael Zacks
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Bat hemoparasite studies have focused on bats as vectors for viruses that cause human diseases such as rabies, Ebola, and Henipavirus, while ectoparastite studies have looked at a broad range of ecological and abiotic factors that influence ectoparasite prevalence including age, sex, roosting ecology, and habitat. Yet diet had been largely ignored in both hemoparasite and ectoparasite studies. In this study, I looked at diet as a possible factor in hemoparasite load and also looked at the relationships between hemoparasites, health (with weight as a proxy), and ectoparasites. Four guilds were compared, sanguinivores, omnivores, frugivores, and nectarivores, with an overall …
Elevation, Habitat Structure And Monteverde Bird Communities, November 2008, Karl Fairchild
Elevation, Habitat Structure And Monteverde Bird Communities, November 2008, Karl Fairchild
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
One hypothesis for why “biodiversity begets biodiversity” when this pattern is observed in bird communities is that by increasing vegetative complexity finer niche partitioning is allowed for among bird species. Bird diversity has been shown to correlate positively with vegetation structure along a successional gradient. However, no such studies have been done in actively managed areas in the tropics. I used three 50 m fixed-radius point counts each in two pairs of study sites at different elevations to compare bird diversity in structurally simple and structurally complex pastures at two different elevations in Monteverde, Costa Rica. Within each pair, one …
Effects Of Urban Sprawl On The Vulnerability To A Significant Tornado Impact In Northeastern Illinois, Walker S. Ashley, Soren G. Hall
Effects Of Urban Sprawl On The Vulnerability To A Significant Tornado Impact In Northeastern Illinois, Walker S. Ashley, Soren G. Hall
Faculty Articles, Papers, and Other Scholarship
A sprawling U.S. population continues to spread into the fringes of urban development placing both populations and property in areas that were once largely unoccupied. Population tallies, housing unit totals, and housing values for 1990 and 2000 are examined to determine the extent to which this growth has affected the tornado hazard in northeastern Illinois. The growing town of Plainfield, Ill., located southwest of Chicago, is examined to determine how vulnerability to a tornado impact has changed in the town since an F5 tornado struck the community in 1990. The population and housing data indicate an increase of 8,629 persons …
Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone
Lessons Of Abu Ghraib: Understanding And Preventing Prisoner Abuse In Military Operations, Paul T. Bartone
Defense Horizons
The abuse of prisoners by U.S. Soldiers at Abu Ghraib had broad strategic consequences, leading many people around the world to question the legitimacy of U.S. goals and activities in Iraq. This paper draws on extensive unclassified reports from multiple investigations that followed Abu Ghraib, and applies key psychological as well as social-situational perspectives to develop a better grasp of the causative factors. From a psychological standpoint, most young adults are powerfully inclined to behave in accord with the social conventions and pressures around them. Especially in ambiguous circumstances, then, it is important that standards of behavior be clear and …
Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey
Perceptions Of Selected Athletic Directors In The Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex Region Regarding Factors And Issues Of Ethics In Interscholastic Athletics, Rodney W. Bussey
Faculty Works
Interscholastic athletic directors have a tremendous responsibility in guiding athletic programs in today’s ever-changing society. Their decisions on the numerous issues confronting them reflect what they perceive as ethical (Conn & Gerdes, 1998). The purpose of the study was to investigate the perceptions of selected athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex regarding the issues and factors related to the ethical conduct of personnel involved in the directing of interscholastic athletic programs. To accomplish this, the researcher collected qualitative data from eight athletic directors in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex who are responsible for at least three interscholastic athletic programs that …

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are present in all known plant and animal tissues and appear to be somewhat concentrated in the mammalian nervous system. Many different miRNA expression profiling platforms have been described. However, relatively little research has been published to establish the importance of 'upstream' variables in RNA isolation for neural miRNA expression profiling. We tested whether apparent changes in miRNA expression profiles may be associated with tissue processing, RNA isolation techniques, or different cell types in the sample. RNA isolation was performed on a single brain sample using eight different RNA isolation methods, and results were correlated using a conventional …
Numerical Simulation Of Local Temperature Distortions During Ice Nucleation Of Cells In Suspension, D. Kandra, R. V. Devireddy
Numerical Simulation Of Local Temperature Distortions During Ice Nucleation Of Cells In Suspension, D. Kandra, R. V. Devireddy
Faculty Publications
Knowledge of intercellular ice formation in cells embedded in an extra-cellular suspension is essential for effective design of freezing protocols. The presence of cell membrane causes super-cooling of the intra-cellular region, which nucleates at much lower temperatures than the surrounding extra-cellular space and is accompanied by the exothermic release of the latent heat. This is a dynamic process and causes thermal distortions in and around the cell where nucleation occurs. In the present study, an attempt has been made to numerically determine the magnitude of thermal distortion (ΔT) and the time (dt) it takes for this distortion to damp out …

A Method To Quantify Residents' Jargon Use During Counseling Of Standardized Patients About Cancer Screening, Lindsay Deuster, Stephanie Christopher, Jodi Donovan, Michael Farrell
College of Professional Studies Faculty Research and Publications
Background
Jargon is a barrier to effective patient-physician communication, especially when health literacy is low or the topic is complicated. Jargon is addressed by medical schools and residency programs, but reducing jargon usage by the many physicians already in practice may require the population-scale methods used in Quality Improvement.
Objective
To assess the amount of jargon used and explained during discussions about prostate or breast cancer screening. Effective communication is recommended before screening for prostate or breast cancer because of the large number of false-positive results and the possible complications from evaluation or treatment.
Participants
Primary care internal medicine residents. …

While The Government Fiddled Around, The Big Easy Drowned: How The Posse Comitatus Act Became The Government's Alibi For The Hurricane Katrina Disaster, Candidus Dougherty
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This article analyzes how the government's blame of the Posse Comitatus Act (PCA) for its late response to the Hurricane Katrina disaster was misplaced. In Part II, the author discusses the history of the Posse Comitatus Act, including a summary of some of its many judicial and congressional expansions. In Part III, the author applies the PCA to the Hurricane Katrina disaster to show that, under its proper application, the PCA does, in fact, permit the lawful use of the military for humanitarian purposes. Based on this analysis, the article concludes that we should focus our efforts less on the …
An Argument For A Return To Plessy V. Ferguson: Why Illinois Should Reconsider The Doctrine Of "Separate But Equal" Public Schools, Rick Guzman
Northern Illinois University Law Review
This Comment analyzes the steady erosion of the 1954 landmark Brown v. Board of Education case. Specifically, it argues that the millions of poor and overwhelmingly minority school children who are attending 99% single-race schools might actually have access to better teachers and more adequate educational funding under the long-abandoned principle that "separate" schools must be "equal," by some measure, than such students fare under today's watered down interpretation of the Brown case. Illinois, which ranks dead last in school-funding equality as measured by disparity in per pupil expenditures, is examined in depth. The Comment provides extensive statistical analysis and …
Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl
Spoliation Of Electronically Stored Information, Good Faith, And Rule 37(E), Andrew Hebl
Northern Illinois University Law Review
The Federal Rules of Civil Procedure were amended effective December 1, 2006 to address concerns about discovery of electronically stored information. One of those amendments, Rule 37(e), created a safe harbor for parties who destroy relevant information as a result of the good faith, routine operation of their electronic storage systems. The rule recognizes the enhanced difficulty of preserving relevant information in the electronic context due to the automatic operation of electronic storage systems and the necessary deletion and modification of such systems' contents from time to time due to storage constraints and other technological limitations. The rule's good-faith requirement …

Linking Mine Action And Development | Humanitarian And Development Ngos, Gichd
Global CWD Repository
Mine action programmes often are not linked early and strongly enough with key development actors. Despite the availability of extensive research documenting the need for greater coordination between mine action and development organisations, concrete guidance for practitioners and policy-makers on how to link mine action with development has been lacking. In response, the Geneva International Centre for Humanitarian Development has published guidelines on how to ensure mine action promotes development in mine-affected countries. More specifically, the guidelines seek to:
- Increase awareness that landmines and other remnants of conflict block development in many affected countries
- Strengthen coordination between mine action and …

Granulocytic Sarcoma Causing Cord Compression In A Pregnant Woman With Acute Myeloid Leukemia And T(8;21), Enaam M. Al-Sobhi, Talal M. Jeha, Mohammad I. Al-Taher
Saudi Medical Journal
Chloroma or granulocytic sarcomas (GSs) are solid tumors originating from myeloid precursors. Most frequently they occur in acute myeloid leukemia (AML), myeloproliferative disorder, and myelodysplasia. It may involve any organ system, but mostly it affects the bone and soft tissue of the head and neck. Granulocytic sarcoma resulting in spinal cord compression is rare. The association between t(8;21), and GS has been reported. In spite of the fact that t(8;21) is considered to be associated with good prognosis, patients with GS and spinal cord compression had less favorable prognosis than other AML patients with t(8;21). Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and surgical decompression …
