Phytochemical Screening And Antibacterial Activity Of Leaf Extracts Of Pterocarpus Marsupium Roxb. (Fabaceae), S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

The present study was carried out to screen and evaluate the antimicrobial activity of bark and leaf extracts from Pterocarpus marsupium Roxb. Hexane, ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were tested against four selected Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. Result indicated that phytochemical extracts of P. marsupium exhibited significant anti-bacterial activity at all dosage tested (1mg/ disc and 5mg/ disc). However, the inhibitory activity was found to be dose dependent. Ethyl acetate and methanol extracts were found to be more active towards the organisms tested than hexane extract. This study depicts that ethyl acetate and methanol extracts of bark and …

In Vitro Evaluation Of Antibacterial Activity Using Crude Extracts Of Catharanthus Roseus L. (G.) Don., S. Ramya Et Al.

Ethnobotanical Leaflets

Catharanthus roseus popularly known as Madagascar periwinkle is a potential source for anti-leukemic alkaloids. The present study aims to evaluate the possibility for the presence of novel bio-active compounds against pathogenic bacteria, as most of the pathogens develop drug resistance against commonly used antibiotics. To determine antibacterial activity, crude extracts from different parts of C. roseus were tested against bacterial strains of clinical significance. Extraction of bio-active principles in appropriate solvent was followed by evaluation of antibacterial activity by disc diffusion assay against selected bacterial stains. Data depicts that the pattern of inhibition largely depends upon extraction procedure, plant part, …

Changes In The Seasonality Of Precipitation Over The Contiguous Usa, S C. Pryor, Justin T. Schoof Nov 2008

Changes In The Seasonality Of Precipitation Over The Contiguous Usa, S C. Pryor, Justin T. Schoof

Publications

Consequences of possible changes in annual total precipitation are dictated, in part, by the timing of precipitation events and changes therein. Herein, we investigated historical changes in precipitation seasonality over the US using observed station precipitation records to compute a standard seasonality index (SI) and the day of year on which certain percentiles of the annual total precipitation were achieved (percentile day of year). The mean SI from the majority of stations exhibited no difference in 1971–2000 relative to 30-year periods earlier in the century. However, analysis of the day of year on which certain percentiles of annual total precipitation …

Department of Entomology: Faculty Publications

The European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Crambidae), is a widely distributed and serious economic pest to corn production in the U.S. Genetic variability of O. nubilalis was studied in 18 sub-populations in the upper Midwestern United States using amplified fragment length polymorphism. The relatively low GST values indicate that more variation exists within populations than between populations. High gene flow (Nm) values were indicated across the entire O. nubilalis population; the lowest degree of gene flow was in the northern samples (Nm = 1.96) and the highest degree of gene flow was in the southern samples (Nm = …

Putting Missouri V. Holland On The Map, Edward T. Swaine Nov 2008

Putting Missouri V. Holland On The Map, Edward T. Swaine

Missouri Law Review

While I can think of no fitter setting for a symposium on this important topic, it must be admitted that geographically speaking, Missouri v. Holland disappoints. One thrills to the prospect of a divisive dispute between the State of Missouri and a province of the Netherlands - perhaps a sub-national compact on flood control gone sour? It quickly becomes apparent, though, that "Holland" is merely a lower-level federal official. And Missouri's particulars play a limited role in the case, as suggested by the fact that Kansas came to its side in the Supreme Court proceedings. Those who are not students …

Crucial Role Of The States And Private International Law Treaties: A Model For Accommodating Globalization, The, Julian G. Ku Nov 2008

Crucial Role Of The States And Private International Law Treaties: A Model For Accommodating Globalization, The, Julian G. Ku

Missouri Law Review

This brief essay highlights the central and important role that state governments play in the development and integration of private international law treaties into the United States legal system. States play this central role even though, as some of the papers in this symposium have concluded, there are few, if any, constitutional constraints on the ability of the federal government to sign, ratify, and implement treaties that would displace state law. The primacy of states in the integration of private international law, this essay argues, points the way to a model of accommodation of other kinds of treaties affecting traditional …

Elusive Foreign Compact, The, Duncan B. Hollis Nov 2008

Elusive Foreign Compact, The, Duncan B. Hollis

Missouri Law Review

Missouri v. Holland marks one of the great rivalries of foreign affairs law, with Missouri and the federal government squaring off over states' rights limitations on the federal government's treaty-making power.' But the rivalry did not end with that case. Recently, Missouri and the federal government opened a new chapter in their feud over state and federal powers in foreign affairs. This time, however, the constitutional challenge involved an international agreement made by Missouri, not the federal government

"Everybody Is Making Love Or Else Expecting Rain": Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin Nov 2008

"Everybody Is Making Love Or Else Expecting Rain": Considering The Sexual Autonomy Rights Of Persons Institutionalized Because Of Mental Disability In Forensic Hospitals And In Asia, Michael L. Perlin

Washington Law Review

One of the most controversial policy questions in all of institutional mental disability law is the extent to which patients in psychiatric hospitals have a right to voluntary sexual interaction. The resolution of this matter involves difficult and sensitive questions of law, social policy, clinical judgment, politics, religion, and family structures. As difficult as these questions are in cases involving civil hospitals, the difficulties are exacerbated when the topic is the application of the right in forensic hospitals. Such facilities typically house individuals involved in the criminal-justice system: who may be incompetent to stand trial; who have been found incompetent …

Locating Oil Spills Under Sea Ice Using Ground-Penetrating Radar, John H. Bradford, Lee M. Liberty, David F. Dickens

CGISS Publications and Presentations

The accelerating level of interest in arctic oil and gas exploration was demonstrated in the overwhelming response to recent lease sales in the Alaskan OCS region. As development increases, the potential for accidental oil spills in the arctic marine environment increases. The need for reliable systems to detect oil trapped in a range of ice conditions remains at the forefront of continued efforts to improve response to ocean spills.

Task Specificity In Early Oral Motor Development, Erin M. Wilson, Jordan R. Green, Yana Y. Yunusova, Christopher A. Moore

Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders: Faculty Publications

This article addresses a long-standing clinical and theoretical debate regarding the potential relationship between speech and nonspeech behaviors in the developing system. The review is motivated by the high popularity of nonspeech oral motor exercises (NSOMEs), including alimentary behaviors such as chewing, in the treatment of speech disorders in young children. The similarities and differences in the behavioral characteristics, sensory requirements, and task goals for speech and nonspeech oromotor behaviors are compared. Integrated theoretical paradigms and empirical data on the development of early oromotor behaviors are discussed. Although the efficacy of NSOMEs remains empirically untested at this time, studies of …

Collection Development Policy For General Interest Newspapers, Jeanetta Drueke

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Collection Development Policies

General interest newspapers are those that contain news, articles of opinion, features, and advertising. They do not include subject specific periodicals such as W or Barron’s. The audience for newspapers is wide-ranging: undergraduates, graduate students, faculty, and community users.

The University Libraries provides newspapers and newspaper articles in a variety of formats: print, microfilm, electronic full facsimile collections (such as ProQuest Historical Newspapers Online), online aggregators (such as LexisNexis), free newspaper websites, and online-only newspapers.

The goal of newspaper collection development is a full and appropriate transition from print to online newspapers.

Corporate Predators Caught In Meltdown, Gil Villagran Nov 2008

Corporate Predators Caught In Meltdown, Gil Villagran

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

The meltdown of Wall Street's so-called 'investment institutions' where the financial bubble of over-valued assets finally burst is so mind boggling that even economic gurus with PhDs and Nobel Prizes, and CEO billionaires testifying before Congress fail to fully explain what happened. Did the "invisible hand" of the "free market" finally deal America a losing set of cards after years of a winning streak? Is it all due to bad luck? Fate? An unfortunate financial version of a perfect storm, similar to Hurricane Katrina hitting the Gulf Coast?

Faculty Publications

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and peptide YY (PYY) are anti-diabetes/obesity hormones ecreted from the gut after meal ingestion. We have shown that dietary-resistant starch (RS) increased GLP-1 and PYY secretion, but he mechanism remains unknown. RS is a fermentable fiber that lowers the glycemic index of the diet and liberates short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) through fermentation in the gut. This study investigates the two possible mechanisms by which RS stimulates GLP-1 and PYY secretion: the effect of a meal or glycemic index, and the effect of fermentation. Because GLP-1 and PYY secretions are stimulated by nutrient availability in the gut, the …

Data Note: Tracking Employment And Day Support Participation And Outcomes In State Intellectual Disability And Developmental Disability Agencies, Samita Bhattarai, Jean E. Winsor

Data Note Series, Institute for Community Inclusion

As a part of the FY2007 National Survey of Day and Employment Programs data was requested from state Intellectual Disabilities and Developmental Disabilities (ID/DD) agencies regarding the sources of information used to report the total number of individuals served in the following services categories: integrated employment, facility-based work, community-based non work, and facility-based non work. Data on sources is an important factor to note when comparing each state’s service outcomes over time. Collecting information on the source of the data can help to explain unexpected trends in state service distribution when the state has not implemented changes in policy or …

Fits & Starts: The Difficult Path For Working Single Parents, Rebecca Loya, Ruth J. Liberman, Randy Albelda, Elisabeth Babcock Nov 2008

Fits & Starts: The Difficult Path For Working Single Parents, Rebecca Loya, Ruth J. Liberman, Randy Albelda, Elisabeth Babcock

Center for Social Policy Publications

With dramatic shifts in the economy in recent years, it has become increasingly difficult for families to move into or stay in the middle class without access to higher education and skills training. Government-sponsored work supports help by providing direct assistance to working families to meet basic needs, such as child care, food, and housing. Yet, many supports do not reach low-wage working families in Massachusetts because of low eligibility thresholds, inadequate funding, limited availability, limited awareness, and numerous barriers to accessing such supports. Even for low-wage workers who do receive key work supports, such as subsidized child care and …

A Comparison Of Student Achievement Between Missouri Professional Learning Communities Project Participants And Non-Participants, Chanda Long Nov 2008

A Comparison Of Student Achievement Between Missouri Professional Learning Communities Project Participants And Non-Participants, Chanda Long

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

The purpose of this non-experimental quantitative study was to suggest a response to the following research question: Is there a significant relationship between student scores on the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) achievement test and the type of Missouri high school attended, PLC or NPLC? This study focused on two populations of high school students in the state of Missouri: those that were participants in the state’s Professional Learning Communities Project (PLC) and those that were not participants in the state’s Professional Learning Communities Project (NPLC). Both school populations were arranged in a typical ninth through twelfth grade configuration.

The means …

Highly Qualified Teacher Status And The Reading Achievement Of Students With Disabilities, A. Helene Robinson

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

With the advent of the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) legislation, many changes are occurring in the field of special education. More than ever before, students with disabilities are being included in each state’s NCLB required assessment to determine adequate yearly progress. This has resulted in an influx of students with disabilities enrolled in intensive reading classes in the schools. Educators, administrators, and reading coaches are attempting to figure out the best way to educate these students to achieve the reading gains that NCLB requires. The purpose of this study was to examine factors believed to affect reading achievement of …

A Case Study: The Preparedness Of Adult Education Students For College-Level Education, Julie Gibbons Griffin Nov 2008

A Case Study: The Preparedness Of Adult Education Students For College-Level Education, Julie Gibbons Griffin

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Each year adult education programs have served over three million people. Approximately 40% of these students aged 24 years and younger who were economically and educationally disadvantaged have benefited from postsecondary education. Although adult education programs have offered high school diploma (HSD) and General Educational Development (GED) credentials to the adult population including young adults, many of the graduates who enrolled in higher education failed to enter at college-level. Because most non-traditional students left college during their first year, their preparation for college-level education had a dire consequence for not only their success, but that of society as well. The …

Two-Factor Mutual Authentication Based On Smart Cards And Passwords, Guomin Yang, Duncan S. Wong, Huaxiong Wang, Xiaotie Deng

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

One of the most commonly used two-factor user authentication mechanisms nowadays is based on smart-card and password. A scheme of this type is called a smart-card-based password authentication scheme. The core feature of such a scheme is to enforce two-factor authentication in the sense that the client must have the smart-card and know the password in order to gain access to the server. In this paper, we scrutinize the security requirements of this kind of schemes, and propose a new scheme and a generic construction framework for smart-card-based password authentication. We show that a secure password based key exchange protocol …

37 | Paneas Volume I: The Roman To Early Islamic Periods Excavations In Areas A, B, E, F, G And H, Vassilios Tzaferis, Shoshana Israeli

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

Occupation at the site of Paneas, also known as Caesarea Philippi and Baniyas, spanned some 2300 years, from the establishment of a small sanctuary devoted to the cult of Pan in the Hellenistic period, to the prosperous Roman capital and polis Caesarea Philippi, and becoming a Christian pilgrimage site known as Paneas in the Byzantine period; following the Muslim conquest, a formidable fortress stood here during the Middle Ages, when the site was known as Baniyas, and finally a poor Ottoman village abandoned in modern times.

This is the first volume of a series documenting the large-scale IAA excavations at …
