Mozart Effect: Exploring The Relationship Between Classical Music And Improvement In The Spatial-Temporal Cognitive Abilities Of Elementary School Children, Michael J. Ader
Graduate Student Dissertations, Theses, Capstones, and Portfolios
The purpose of this study was to learn if classical music stimuli can be used to enhance the thinking abilities of children as measured by a cognitive testing instrument. A comparison of classical music exposure and student achievement was conducted to specifically ascertain if music of varying types had an effect on measurable intelligences (especially spatial-temporal intelligence), as measured by the Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Test (NNAT). An exploration of the theoretical and empirical literature regarding the improvement of cognitive abilities of elementary school aged children was examined to identify if exposure to arts education produced measurable gains which could facilitate …
Building A Bridge From The Research Office To The Moon, Linda M. Galloway
Building A Bridge From The Research Office To The Moon, Linda M. Galloway
Librarian Publications
Creating an information services “bridge” – from the library to another department within an institution - serves as a conduit for exchange of resources and ideas. This bridge will strengthen the information services department and solidify its purpose as an integral part of the institutional whole. Within our small campus library, we were able to create a librarian position that links Moon Library to the Office of Research Programs in a mutually beneficial relationship. A modified librarian position was shaped that combines traditional academic library services with those of a grants librarian – collecting and disseminating relevant funding notices to …

Vof/Navier-Stokes Numerical Modeling Of Surface Waves Generated By Subaerial Landslides, Stéphane Abadie, Denis Morichon, Stephan Grilli, Stéphane Glocker
Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications
Landslide generated waves are studied using a numerical model based on Navier-Stokes equations, with a VOF algorithm to track the interfaces. Unlike most earlier simulations of this problem, our model implicitly describes the coupling between slide and water. Simulations are first compared with earlier measurements of a solitary wave generated by a rigid bloc falling down in a shallow water flume. We then perform simulations to evaluate the role of slide deformation on the characteristics of generated waves. Results highlight both the importance and complexity of slide deformation on wave characteristics. Hence, we recommend to consider slide rheology in tsunami …

The Papua New Guinea Tsunami Of 17 July 1998: Anatomy Of A Catastrophic Event, D. R. Tappin, P. Watts, Stephan T. Grilli
Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications
The Papua New Guinea (PNG) tsunami of July 1998 was a seminal event because it demonstrated that relatively small and relatively deepwater Submarine Mass Failures (SMFs) can cause devastating local tsunamis that strike without warning. There is a comprehensive data set that proves this event was caused by a submarine slump. Yet, the source of the tsunami has remained controversial. This controversy is attributed to several causes. Before the PNG event, it was questionable as to whether SMFs could cause devastating tsunamis. As a result, only limited modelling of SMFs as tsunami sources had been undertaken, and these excluded slumps. …

Cenozoic biostratigraphic, cosmogenic isotope, magnetostratigraphic, and cyclostratigraphic data derived from Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Expedition 302, the Arctic Coring Expedition (ACEX), are merged into a coherent age model. This age model has low resolution because of poor core recovery, limited availability of biostratigraphic information, and the complex nature of the magnetostratigraphic record. One 2.2 Ma long hiatus occurs in the late Miocene; another spans 26 Ma (18.2–44.4 Ma). The average sedimentation rate in the recovered Cenozoic sediments is about 15 m/Ma. Core‐seismic correlation links the ACEX sediments to the reflection seismic stratigraphy of line AWI‐91090, on which the ACEX sites …
Refinement Of Reduced-Models For Dynamic Systems, Huajun Li, Min Zhang, Sau-Lon James Hu
Refinement Of Reduced-Models For Dynamic Systems, Huajun Li, Min Zhang, Sau-Lon James Hu
Ocean Engineering Faculty Publications
A refinement procedure for the reduced models of structural dynamic systems is presented in this article. The refinement procedure is to “tune” the parameters of a reduced model, which could be obtained from any traditional model reduction scheme, into an improved reduced model. Upon the completion of the refinement, the improved reduced model matches the dynamic characteristics – the chosen structural frequencies and their mode shapes – of the full order model. Mathematically, the procedure to implement the model refinement technique is an application of the recently developed cross-model cross-mode (CMCM) method for model updating. A numerical example of reducing …

Strengthening And Rehabilitation Of Steel Bridge Girders Using Cfrp Laminates, Ahmed Sabri Abd-El-Meguid
Strengthening And Rehabilitation Of Steel Bridge Girders Using Cfrp Laminates, Ahmed Sabri Abd-El-Meguid
All ETDs from UAB
hile traditional retrofitting methods for steel bridge girders could be time consuming and uneconomical, an alternative repair method is suggested using Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) laminate strips, providing engineers with a competitive solution that will increase the life-cycle of repaired bridges. This study investigated its feasibility as an option to strengthen and rehabilitate steel bridges. The main advantages of using CFRP laminates are their light weight and durability, which results in ease of handling and maintenance. The dissertation conducted experimental and analytical work to evaluate the effectiveness of strengthening steel beams by the use of novel CFRP laminate strips …

Multiracial Tobacco, Alcohol, And Drug Use: An Investigation Of The Function Of Racial Identity In A Longitudinal Sample From Youth To Young Adulthood, Julia Katrina Crumly
All ETDs from UAB
The purpose of the research is threefold. The first purpose is to determine if multiracial individuals are at a higher risk for alcohol, tobacco, and drug use. The second purpose is to determine the relationship between racial identity and risk behaviors. The third purpose is to determine how the change/no change of racial identity longitudinally contributes to one’s risk to engage in risk behaviors. A national representative longitudinal data set was obtained and analyzed for the purpose of this study. Results of the study reveal that there are differences in multiracial groups for risk behaviors, minority identification is not necessarily …

The Effects Of Maternal Prenatal Insults On The Bmi Growth Trajectory Of Children Between The Ages Of 5-12 Years, Anthony Goudie
All ETDs from UAB
The level of childhood obesity in the United States is at epidemic proportions. Most population studies looking at the factors contributing to childhood obesity focus on obesity as a dichotomous outcome. The purpose of this study is to test for the effects of maternal prenatal insult behaviors on the growth trajectory of a sample of children 5-12 years of age in the United States. This is the first known study to use a latent growth curve model and a cohort-concurrent analytical design to test the association between maternal prenatal insult behaviors and the annual longitudinal increase in body mass index …

Using the allostatic load model of disease processes, this study investigated gender differences on cardiovascular risk and cardiovascular disease among PTSD and MDD veterans. Cross-sectional analysis of 884 de-identified veteran's data from four VISN7 primary care clinics was completed via ANCOVAs and binary logistic regression analyses. Veterans with PTSD had significantly higher levels of SBP. Among female veterans without PTSD, MDD was associated with increased DBP. Among veterans with neither PTSD nor MDD, male veterans had higher levels of DBP. Veterans without PTSD and men had higher rates of cardiovascular disease. Study results support continued focus on gender differences in …
Growth Hormone Signaling And Action In Osteoblasts, Douglas J. Digirolamo
Growth Hormone Signaling And Action In Osteoblasts, Douglas J. Digirolamo
All ETDs from UAB
Growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) exert profound growth promoting actions during pre- and post-natal skeletal development. GH and IGF- 1 appear to cause these anabolic actions by influencing a variety of effects on osteoblast proliferation, differentiation, and survival. However, because GH stimulates the production of IGF-1 from the liver and other GH-responsive peripheral tissues, including bone, the individual contributions of these two molecules to anabolic responses in bone remains poorly defined. In this dissertation research, I sought to distinguish the direct and indirect (IGF-1 dependent) GH actions on osteoblasts. In the first section of this thesis, I …
Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On The Asthmatic Lung, Matthew M. Hewitt
Effects Of Aerobic Exercise On The Asthmatic Lung, Matthew M. Hewitt
All ETDs from UAB
Asthma is identified by the clinical symptoms of wheezing, chest tightness, dyspnea and cough, and by the presence of airway hyperresponsiveness (AHR) to inhaled stimuli. We have reported previously that repeated bouts of moderate intensity aerobic exercise attenuate airway inflammatory responses in a mouse model of atopic asthma. Because the effects of exercise on physiological responses are dependent upon several variables, including total exercise duration, the hypothesis of the current work was that differing amounts of moderate intensity aerobic exercise exert dissimilar effects on AHR and airway inflammation. The aims to test this hypothesis included: 1) determine the effect of …
Molecular Regulation Of Pax5-Mediated Biological Functions, Ti He
Molecular Regulation Of Pax5-Mediated Biological Functions, Ti He
All ETDs from UAB
B lineage cells are major players in the adaptive immune system. Pax5 is essential for B lineage cell development and function. Pax5 controls B lineage cell developmental progression by regulating expression of many B lineage specific genes and the B lineage specific VH to DJH recombination; and the meantime, Pax5 also represses the transcription of lineage- and developmental stage- inappropriate genes to restrict the B lineage developmental pathway. It is not clear how Pax5-mediated function can be regulated to fulfill its role in different biological reactions. In this dissertation, we focused on the study of the molecular regulation of Pax5-mediated …

Biogenesis, Trafficing, And Function Of Wild-Type And Mutant Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane Conductance Regulator (Cftr), Asta Jurkuvenaite
All ETDs from UAB
Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a genetic disease resulting from mutations in the cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR), a cAMP-activated chloride channel that functions at the apical surface of epithelial cells and plays a critical role in mucociliary clearance. The most common mutation in the CFTR gene involves a deletion of phenylalanine at position 508 in the protein (ΔF508 CFTR). ΔF508 CFTR is recognized as misfolded in the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) and is degraded. In vitro manipulations such as culturing cells at 27°C can “rescue” ΔF508 CFTR to the plasma membrane (rΔF508 CFTR), but no pharmacological agent has produced comparable …
Wavelet-Based Regression And Classification For Longitudinal Diffusion Tensor Imaging Data, William R. Prucka
Wavelet-Based Regression And Classification For Longitudinal Diffusion Tensor Imaging Data, William R. Prucka
All ETDs from UAB
Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) is a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) technique capable of in vivo characterization of the spatial and angular dependence of free water diffusion in tissue. By studying intra- and extra-cellular water mobility, inference can be made about the surrounding medium. The non-uniform angular dependence of diffusion, known as anisotropy, is evident in fibrous tissues, which exhibit greater diffusion parallel versus perpendicular to the fiber orientation. DTI’s sensitivity to anisotropy makes it an effective tool for measuring the integrity of fibrous myelinated white matter tracts in the brain. For demyelinating diseases such as multiple sclerosis (MS), DTI has …
Fast Domain Wall Motion In Nanostripes With Out-Of-Plane Fields, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff
Fast Domain Wall Motion In Nanostripes With Out-Of-Plane Fields, Andrew Kunz, Sarah C. Reiff
Physics Faculty Research and Publications
Controlling domain wall motion is important due to the impact on the viability of proposed nanowire devices. One hurdle is slow domain wall speed when driven by fields greater than the Walker field due to nucleation of vortices in the wall. We present simulation results detailing the dynamics of these vortices including the nucleation and subsequent fast ejection of the vortex core leading to fast domain wall speeds. The ejection is due to the reversal of the core moments by an out-of-plane field. The technique can be used to produce domain walls of known orientation, independent of the initial state.
Sustainable Professionalism, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Sustainable Professionalism, Trevor C. W. Farrow
Osgoode Hall Law Journal
This article challenges traditional visions of lawyering by building on current alternative narratives and articulating a new discourse of professionalism that is personally, politically, ethically, economically, and professionally sustainable. It is a discourse that makes space for lawyers' principles, interests, and life preferences by balancing them with other important interests (including, but not dominated by, those of clients). It is a discourse that seeks to make good on aspirational promises of equality, access to justice, and protecting the public interest. And it is a discourse that takes seriously obligations to, as well as benefits from, the culturally complicated makeup of …
Designing The Architecture For Integrating Accommodation: An Institutionalist Commentary, Susan P. Sturm
Designing The Architecture For Integrating Accommodation: An Institutionalist Commentary, Susan P. Sturm
Faculty Scholarship
Integrating Accommodation, by Elizabeth F. Emens, reshapes the framework for evaluating workplace accommodations to assure consideration of their third-party benefits. In an ingenious move, the article extends the contact hypothesis, which conventionally emphasizes the attitudinal benefits of integrating diverse groups, to the impact of integrating the accommodations made so that disabled people can effectively participate in the workplace. The article shows how accommodations benefit third parties by improving their workplace conditions and thus have the potential to change attitudes toward disability, accommodation, and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

The Role Of Ddx3 In Regulating Apoptosis, P53 And Snail, Mianen Sun
All ETDs from UAB
Cancer is a common disease that causes high rates of lethality. Resistance to cancer therapy is one major obstacle for producing an effective cancer treatment. Clarifying mechanisms of cancer development, such as resistance to apoptosis and metastasis, can provide important information for developing effective cancer treatment strategies. In the present study, DDX3 was demonstrated to have effects on both responses to cancer treatment and cancer development. DDX3 together with glycogen synthase kinase-3 (GSK-3) was found to impede death receptor-induced apoptosis, which is important because death receptors are activated by some cancer treatments. Additionally, DDX3 was shown to regulate two proteins …

Писатели О Языке: Contemporary Russian Writers On The Language Question, Ingunn Lunde
Russian Language Journal
Post-perestroika Russian society exhibits a pronounced concern with the language question. Linguistic issues are discussed at all levels of society, and a great many people engage in these debates: politicians, philologists, teachers, journalists, writers, students, bloggers, and others. Newspapers and journals feature columns or article series devoted to language; conferences discuss “the state of the Russian language”; the state sponsors a large number of radio and television programmes on language and language culture; various centres and institutions offer programmes promoting linguistic cultivation; there are information services on linguistic questions on the Internet; many blogs deal with the language question.

The Poetics Of Paraphrase: The Positivist Postmodernism In Mikhail Gasparov’S “Experimental Translations”, Heinrich Kirschbaum
Russian Language Journal
Two years before his death, Mikhail Gasparov (1935-2005) published his “Ėksperimental’nye perevody” (2003, “Experimental Translations,” or ETs), an anthology of translated works by authors from different time periods and literary traditions. The ETs are experimental in many ways: in some of his condensed translations, Gasparov shortens the originals drastically, in some cases by 80 percent. However, the ETs are not only experimental due to Gasparov’s new “technique of translation,” but also thanks to the choice of the originals to be translated. In addition to Hölderlin and Kavafis, Gasparov translates Pushkin and Lermontov from Russian to Russian, shortening and paraphrasing them …

Russian Language Journal
The post-Soviet period presents an illuminating picture of competition taking place between different public discourses for meaning construction and articulation. It has been observed that after an initial period when the public narrative of the nation experienced fragmentation, and, using Pierre Bourdieu’s term, went through a period of heterodoxy during the last decade―roughly corresponding with the presidency of Vladimir Putin―it has displayed the growing characteristics of orthodoxy, with its centrally produced “common sense” meanings and assumptions.

A Portrait Of Urban Youthspeak And The Russian Language In The 21st Century, Thomas J. Garza
Russian Language Journal
As the reality of a shattered Soviet empire began to enter the collective Russian consciousness in the early 1990s, the effects of a multiplicity of previously forbidden global influences began to emerge in virtually every arena of the new post-Soviet society, including within the Russian language itself. From mass media to commerce to politics, the language began to show the effects of the assimilation of previously unfamiliar lexicon and situational usage, as well as of the introduction of non-Russian neologisms in substantial numbers.
