An Exploratory Study Of Proximal Mentoring In Graduate Education, Susan E Gunn
An Exploratory Study Of Proximal Mentoring In Graduate Education, Susan E Gunn
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation explored the construct of Proximal Mentoring from the perspective of the professor, student-mentees, and Proximal Mentors. A master's course and a beginning doctorate course were selected for implementation. All participants were in agreement that the definition of the role of Proximal Mentoring is: "provider of content and feedback, model for collaboration, clarifier of course objectives, guide, and role model." None of the participants in this study perceived the role of the PM as a tutor. However, they did not see the role as an expert mentor either. This dissertation suggested that PMs were able to increase their depth …
Avoiding The Sexual: Visual Attention And Distraction In Dyspareunia, Amy D Lykins
Avoiding The Sexual: Visual Attention And Distraction In Dyspareunia, Amy D Lykins
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Dyspareunia, defined as genital pain associated with intercourse, holds the unenviable status of being one of the most prevalent yet understudied of the sexual dysfunctions. The coupling of sex and pain creates an interesting theoretical conundrum of clinical significance: are women with dyspareunia distracted from sexual stimuli (as the sexual dysfunction literature would suggest), or are they hypervigilant to sexual stimuli because these stimuli elicit thoughts and expectations of pain (as the pain literature would suggest)? Eye-tracking may be a uniquely relevant tool to measure potential differences in attention between women with and without dyspareunia. The current study tested distraction …
Parametric Study Of Self -Consolidating Concrete, Hamidou Diawara
Parametric Study Of Self -Consolidating Concrete, Hamidou Diawara
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The research investigation presented herein was intended to study the influence of parameters, such as aggregate size, admixture source, hauling time, and temperature on the fresh and hardened properties of three distinct groups of self-consolidating concretes (SCC). Within each group, the selected SCCs were made with a constant water-to-cementitious materials ratio, a uniform cementitious materials (cement and fly ash) content, and a constant coarse-to-fine aggregate ratio that provided the optimum aggregate gradation. Three coarse aggregate sizes (ASTM C 33 #8, #7, and #67) obtained from two different quarries were investigated. Four sources of polycarboxylate-based high range water-reducing admixtures (HRWRA) and …
Perceptions Of "Others": The Role Of Heterosexism In The Decline Of College Women Coaches, Amy Sandler
Perceptions Of "Others": The Role Of Heterosexism In The Decline Of College Women Coaches, Amy Sandler
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Since Title IX was signed into law in 1972, opportunities for females to participate in collegiate sport have increased tremendously. But these advancements have not held true for women head coaches in collegiate sport. For female head coaches, in fact, the inverse has resulted. Whereas prior to 1972, women led most collegiate women's athletic teams, today the majority of women's collegiate athletic teams are led by men. Previous researchers have pointed to the existence of a relationship between heterosexism and the decline of women coaches, but prior to this study, little or no empirical research on lesbian head coaches' perceptions …

A Cognitive -Behavioral -Based Workshop Intervention For Perfectionism, Marcus T Lasota
A Cognitive -Behavioral -Based Workshop Intervention For Perfectionism, Marcus T Lasota
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
Perfectionistic thinking, attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors can have negative influences on mental and physical health. Overly rigid and self-critical perfectionistic thinking also complicates treatment for people seeking to alleviate mental health and medical concerns. Several researchers have offered suggestions for treating perfectionism, but no empirical treatment studies with follow-up results have been published. Only DiBartolo, Frost, Dixon, and Almodovar (2001) conducted a brief manipulation of public speaking fears related to concern over mistakes and employed a control group. The current study expanded the research literature with the creation and evaluation of a 3-hour cognitive-behavioral workshop for perfectionism. The results indicate …

Evaluating The Use Of System Dynamics For Improving Stakeholder Decision Making, Marcia Lynne Turner
Evaluating The Use Of System Dynamics For Improving Stakeholder Decision Making, Marcia Lynne Turner
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
When lay stakeholders are involved in complex environmental decision making, the ensuing decision does not always effectively solve the problem of focus. This can be due to the fact that standard facilitation methods commonly used to manage such efforts frequently fail to promote thorough and rational decision analysis. A review of classical and behavioral decision theory, stakeholder research and standard facilitation practices suggests that standard facilitation methods tend to enable behavioral decision making strategies which oversimplify decision making tasks, rather than employing classical rational strategies which stress a more thorough decision analysis and maximization of decision outcomes; To test this …

Wayward Fictions: A Study Of The Dynamic Picaresque Novel, Tina Ogorek
Wayward Fictions: A Study Of The Dynamic Picaresque Novel, Tina Ogorek
UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations
The picaresque has been considered a narrow and historically closed genre, limited to a few examples, as well as a wide and flexible genre inclusive of any number of narratives. As an alternative, I propose that it should be seen as a dynamic form, conserving certain historic characteristics, but also adapting to newly current, mostly social, concerns by reconfiguring form and content. Through its double structure it incorporates inconsistencies and controversies, remaining culturally relevant. In the following chapters I have redefined the picaresque elements of two well-known British picaresque novels, added another picaresque novel to the canon, and qualified two …
