Weed Control In No-Till Pumpkins, Elizabeth T. Maynard Jan 2008

Weed Control In No-Till Pumpkins, Elizabeth T. Maynard

Purdue Fruit and Vegetable Research Reports

"No-till production systems for pumpkins are of interest to Midwest producers, but achieving acceptable weed control without cultivation can be difficult. Research was conducted in Wanatah, Indiana in 2007 to evaluate postemergence weed control options for pumpkins no-till planted into a fall-seeded, spring-killed winter wheat cover crop. Weeds in no-till pumpkins were controlled reasonably well with a preemergence herbicide (Strategy®) followed by a hooded sprayer, row-middle application of a nonselective, nonresidual herbicide (glyphosate). Weed control, yield, and fruit size with this treatment were comparable to conventional tillage with a preemergence herbicide (Strategy®) and one cultivation. Hand weeding could be substituted …

Application Of The Dsmc Method For Design Of A Coaxial Microthruster Nozzle, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko Jan 2008

Application Of The Dsmc Method For Design Of A Coaxial Microthruster Nozzle, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

The Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method is used to numerically simulate and design a micronozzle with improved performance. Thrust calculations using the DSMC method demonstrate that the coaxial micronozzles can achieve milli-Newton thrust levels with specific impulses on the order of 45 s using argon in a cold gas expansion. Improved micronozzle designs of coaxial microthrusters are also proposed. Coaxial micronozzles utilizing center-body geometries to exploit pressure thrust show about 140% increase in specific impulse at low Reynolds numbers compared to a traditional converging nozzle.

“Revenge” And “Rescue:” Workplace Deviance In The Taxicab Industry, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Jan 2008

“Revenge” And “Rescue:” Workplace Deviance In The Taxicab Industry, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

This study explores taxicab drivers’ acts of “revenge” and “rescue,” some of which are expressive acts, while others are more instrumental. This article builds on earlier theories of workplace deviance, demonstrating how deviance can serve different purposes and expanding the concept of “deviance admiration” (Heckert and Heckert 2004). It examines deviance in a circumstance – the taxicab industry – which introduces a tension between mandated conformity and necessary deviance: employees must conform to the employers’ rules and yet, to accomplish their jobs well, they need to abandon those rules occasionally. In addition to its theoretical contributions, this work has important …

Open-Ended Interviews And Emotional Labor: Succeeding At The Emotionally Challenging Job Interview, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann Jan 2008

Open-Ended Interviews And Emotional Labor: Succeeding At The Emotionally Challenging Job Interview, Elizabeth A. Hoffmann

Department of Sociology Faculty Publications

For most job candidates, the interview experience is "an emotionally challenging endeavor." To succeed in interviews, candidates must understand the emotional labor needed to "manage their feelings" as they "create a publicly observable facial and bodily display." This is particularly true when recruiters use open-ended interviews that are not constrained to a narrow set of questions. The author's work in conducting research interviews illustrates several aspects of emotional labor in the interview context. Although the author talks from the perspective of the interviewer, this discussion of her own emotional labor is instructive for people entering an open-ended interview as either …

Determining The Optimal Contact Length For A Metal/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Interconnect, C. Lan, D. N. Zakharov, R. G. Reifenberger Jan 2008

Determining The Optimal Contact Length For A Metal/Multiwalled Carbon Nanotube Interconnect, C. Lan, D. N. Zakharov, R. G. Reifenberger

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

A focused ion beam (FIB) is used to sequentially reduce the contact length of an evaporated metal film to a multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT). By using this FIB contact cutback technique, the contact resistance between an individual MWCNT and evaporated thin films of Au, Au/Ti, and Ag are accurately determined. The data permit a rational way to specify the minimum contact length of a metallic thin film to a MWCNT. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Gamnas-Based Hybrid Multiferroic Memory Device, M. Overby, A. Chernyshov, L. P. Rokhinson, X. Liu, J. K. Furdyna

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We report a nonvolatile hybrid multiferroic memory cell with electrostatic control of magnetization based on strain-coupled GaMnAs ferromagnetic semiconductor and a piezoelectric material. We use the crystalline anisotropy of GaMnAs to store information in the orientation of the magnetization along one of the two easy axes, which is monitored via transverse anisotropic magnetoresistance. The magnetization orientation is switched by applying voltage to the piezoelectric material and tuning magnetic anisotropy of GaMnAs via the resulting stress field. Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Top-gated, few-layer graphene field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated on thermally decomposed semi-insulating 4H-SiC substrates are demonstrated. Physical vapor deposited SiO2 is used as the gate dielectric. A two-dimensional hexagonal arrangement of carbon atoms with the correct lattice vectors, observed by high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy, confirms the formation of multiple graphene layers on top of the SiC substrates. The observation of n-type and p-type transition further verifies Dirac Fermions' unique transport properties in graphene layers. The measured electron and hole mobilities on these fabricated graphene FETs are as high as 5400 and 4400 cm(2)/V s, respectively, which are much larger than the …

Mojave: Monitoring Of Jets In Agn With Vlba Experiments. Iv. The Parent Luminosity Function Of Radio-Loud Blazars, M. Cara, M. L. Lister

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We use a complete sample of active galactic nuclei (AGN) selected on the basis of relativistically beamed 15 GHz radio flux density (MOJAVE: Monitoring of Jets in AGN with VLBA Experiments) to derive the parent radio luminosity function (RLF) of bright radio-selected blazar cores. We use a maximum likelihood method to fit a beamed RLF to the observed data and thereby recover the parameters of the intrinsic (unbeamed) RLF. We analyze two sub-samples of the MOJAVE sample: the first contains only objects of known FR II class, with a total of 103 sources, and the second subsample adds 24 objects …

Search For Pulsar Wind Nebula Associations With Unidentified Tev Gamma-Ray Sources, C. Chang, A. Konopelko, W. Cui Jan 2008

Search For Pulsar Wind Nebula Associations With Unidentified Tev Gamma-Ray Sources, C. Chang, A. Konopelko, W. Cui

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

Many of the recently discovered TeV gamma-ray sources are associated with pulsar wind nebulae (PWNe). In fact, they represent the most populous class of Galactic sources at TeV energies. In addition, HESS has also discovered, in a survey of the Galactic plane, a population of TeV gamma-ray sources that are still without definitive counterparts at longer wavelengths. For a number of these sources, a pulsar is an evident association, which is often located within an extended region of the TeV gamma-ray emission. These particular HESS sources are promising candidates for yet not resolved PWNe. Here we have undertaken a systematic …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present the first detailed abundance analysis of the metal-poor giant HKII 17435-00532. This star was observed as part of the University of Texas long-term project Chemical Abundances of Stars in the Halo ( CASH). A spectrum was obtained with the High Resolution Spectrograph (HRS) on the Hobby-Eberly Telescope with a resolving power of R similar to 15,000. Our analysis reveals that this star may be located on the red giant branch, red horizontal branch, or early asymptotic giant branch. We find that this metal-poor (Fe/H = -2.2) star has an unusually high lithium abundance [log epsilon(Li) +2.1], mild carbon …

Department of Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

We present a detailed analysis of week-long simultaneous observations of the blazar Mrk 421 at 2-60 keV X-rays (RXTE) and TeV gamma-rays (Whipple and HEGRA) in 2001. Accompanying optical monitoring was performed with the Mt. Hopkins 48 inch telescope. The unprecedented quality of this data set enables us to establish the existence of the correlation between the TeV and X-ray luminosities, and also to start unveiling some of its characteristics, in particular its energy dependence and time variability. The source shows strong variations in both X-ray and gamma-ray bands, which are highly correlated. No evidence of an X-ray/gamma-ray interband lag …
