The Jew’S Text: “Shem The Penman” And “Shaun The Post”, Maren Linett

Department of English Faculty Publications

Wyndham Lewis was one of the few early critics of Ulysses to see that, like Stephen Dedalus, Leopold Bloom is a Joycean self-portrait.1 Driven by his anti-Semitism, Lewis was irritated by the sympathy Joyce garnered by portraying himself as a Jew. In Time and Western Man, he complains that Bloom has too much dramatic power: As it is, of course, the author, thinly disguised as a middle-aged Jew tout (Mr. Leopold Bloom), wins the reader’s sympathy every time he appears; and he never is confronted with the less and less satisfactory Dedalus (in the beau role) without the latter losing …

High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Boltzmann Model Equations, Alina A. Alexeenko, Cyril Galitzine, Alexander M. Alekseenko Jan 2008

High-Order Discontinuous Galerkin Method For Boltzmann Model Equations, Alina A. Alexeenko, Cyril Galitzine, Alexander M. Alekseenko

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

High-order Runge-Kutta discontinuous Galerkin (DG) method is applied to the kinetic model equations describing rarefied gas flows. A conservative DG discretization of nonlinear collision relaxation term is formulated for Bhatnagar-Gross-Krook and ellipsoidal statistical models. The numerical solutions using RKDG method of order up to four are obtained for two flow problems: the heat transfer between parallel plates and the normal shock wave. The convergence of RKDG method is compared with the conventional secondorder finite volume method for the heat transfer problem. The normal shock wave solutions obtained using RKDG are compared with the experimental measurements of density and velocity distribution …

Rfccd Microthruster Performance Via Numerical Simulation, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, Ivana Hrbud Jan 2008

Rfccd Microthruster Performance Via Numerical Simulation, William B. Stein, Alina A. Alexeenko, Ivana Hrbud

School of Aeronautics and Astronautics Faculty Publications

Particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo (PIC/MCC) and Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) algorithms comprise a numerical model to assess the propulsive capability of a RF plasma microthruster concept. This thruster concept is an electrothermal device and exploits RF capacitively coupled discharge (RFCCD) to heat a propellant. This RF plasma microthruster has potential to alleviate some severe constraints on microsatellite propulsion systems such as power, mass, volume and lifetime. The discharge characteristics are investigated by permuting electrode geometry (0.5 - 10 mm) and applied voltage (10 - 500 V) at a constant RF frequency of 200 MHz and a pressure of 3 Torr. PIC/MCC …

Nesting Forward-Mode Ad In A Functional Framework, Jeffrey M. Siskind, Barak A. Pearlmutter Jan 2008

Nesting Forward-Mode Ad In A Functional Framework, Jeffrey M. Siskind, Barak A. Pearlmutter

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Technical Reports

We discuss the augmentation of a functional-programming language with a derivative- taking operator implemented with forward-mode automatic differentiation (AD). The primary technical difficulty in doing so lies in ensuring correctness in the face of nested invocation of that operator, due to the need to distinguish perturbations introduced by distinct invocations. We exhibit a series of implementations of a referentially- transparent forward-mode-AD derivative-taking operator, each of which uses a different non-referentially-transparent mechanism to distinguish perturbations. Even though the forward-mode-AD derivative-taking operator is itself referentially transparent, we hypothesize that one cannot correctly formulate this operator as a function definition in current pure …

3d Modeling Of Optically Challenging Objects, J. Park, A. C. Kak Jan 2008

3d Modeling Of Optically Challenging Objects, J. Park, A. C. Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We present a system for constructing 3D models of real-world objects with optically challenging surfaces. The system utilizes a new range imaging concept called multipeak range imaging, which stores multiple candidates of range measurements for each point on the object surface. The multiple measurements include the erroneous range data caused by various surface properties that are not ideal for structured-light range sensing. False measurements generated by spurious reflections are eliminated by applying a series of constraint tests. The constraint tests based on local surface and local sensor visibility are applied first to individual range images. The constraint tests based on …

A Novel Evidence Accumulation Framework For Robust Multi-Camera Person Detection, Hidekazu Iwaki, Gaurav Srivastava, Akio Kosaka, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak Jan 2008

A Novel Evidence Accumulation Framework For Robust Multi-Camera Person Detection, Hidekazu Iwaki, Gaurav Srivastava, Akio Kosaka, Johnny Park, Avinash Kak

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

We propose a novel evidence accumulation framework that accurately estimates the positions of humans in a 3D environment. The framework consists of a network of distributed agents having different functionalities. The modular structure of the network allows scalability to large surveillance areas and robust operation. The framework does not assume reliable measurements in single cameras (referred to as 'sensing agents' in our framework) or reliable communication between different agents. There is a position uncertainty associated with single camera measurements and it is reduced through an uncertainty reducing transform that performs evidence accumulation using multiple camera measurements. Our framework has the …
