Mexican Immigrant Parents' Beliefs And Practices Related To Literacy, Pamela M. Spurgeon

Education Masters Theses

The purpose of this study was to describe the literacy practices and beliefs exhibited by immigrant parents of Mexican descent in Oregon. The researcher collected data using a questionnaire and examined the correlation between generational differences of immigrants and respondents' beliefs and practices regarding reading and writing. From the survey sample, the researcher selected 5 representative families for observations and interviews to further explore how literacy is practiced in Mexican immigrant families' homes and daily lives. The belief regarding whether or not children begin learning before they go to school generated the most disagreement amongst participants. Data correlating acculturation and …

The Relevance Of Confucian Philosophy To Modern Concepts Of Leadership And Followership, Sujeeta Dhakhwa, Stacey Enriquez Jan 2008

The Relevance Of Confucian Philosophy To Modern Concepts Of Leadership And Followership, Sujeeta Dhakhwa, Stacey Enriquez

All Volumes (2001-2008)

The purpose of this paper is to discuss Confucian philosophy and compare its relevance to modern concepts of leadership and followership. It will demonstrate that both exemplify the same ideology, though separated by centuries of history. The paper first introduces the reader to the history of Chinese government and the life of Confucius as a teacher. Then it will expand on the importance of understanding his philosophy on leadership and followership as well as its impact on China’s political and cultural development. It will then examine three Confucian teachings on leadership and three on followership. Finally, with this information, it …

Characterization Of The Basigin-Mct1 Complex In Vertebrate Retina, Vilma S. Carson Jan 2008

Characterization Of The Basigin-Mct1 Complex In Vertebrate Retina, Vilma S. Carson

All Volumes (2001-2008)

It has been hypothesized that the cell adhesion molecule Basigin and the lactate transporter monocarboxylate transporter-1 (MCT1) interact to form a lactate shuttle necessary to fuel photoreceptor neurons in the retina. The purpose of this study was to characterize the interaction between the two proteins. Specifically, the amino acids within MCT1 that interact with Basigin were investigated. MCT1 is a large protein. Therefore, the complementary DNA (cDNA) for MCT1 was divided in half via the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and each half was cloned into a bacterial expression vector to generate protein probes. The probes were then used to test …

Assessing Babesia Microti Sensu Lato In Small Mammals In Northeast Florida, Kyla Marie Savick Jan 2008

Assessing Babesia Microti Sensu Lato In Small Mammals In Northeast Florida, Kyla Marie Savick

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Babesia microti is the causative agent of human babesiosis. Black-legged ticks (Ixodes scapularis) are the only proven vector and white-footed mice (Peromyscus leucopus) serve as the main reservoir in northeastern United States. The aim of the present study was to determine if B. microti is present in small mammals in southeastern United States and to compare strains found in this study to reference strains from around the world. Blood samples were obtained from cotton mice, cotton rats, a flying squirrel, golden mice, rice rats, Virginia opossums, wood rats, and raccoons in northeastern Florida. DNA was extracted from the blood, and …

The Cultural House In Ostrov And Its Relation To Czech Secession Style, Dita Dlugosova-Knappova Jan 2008

The Cultural House In Ostrov And Its Relation To Czech Secession Style, Dita Dlugosova-Knappova

All Volumes (2001-2008)

Architecture in the former Czechoslovakia was heavily dominated by Soviet influence after the Communist Coup in February 1948. The research presented in this paper focuses on a building called the Cultural House, which was created during the worst times of political repression in the 1950s in a small town of Ostrov, located on the Czech western border with Germany. (Fig.1) It is in my opinion that for the Cultural House in this town, Czech architects were able to integrate their Austrian and Czech teachers’ ideas from the pre-World War II period and mixed Secession styles with Socialist Realism, in part …

Structure On Attitude Polarization, Ryan Gladding Jan 2008

Structure On Attitude Polarization, Ryan Gladding

All Volumes (2001-2008)

People hold attitudes about a wide range of issues. People hold attitudes about issues ranging from toothpaste brands to foreign policies. One issue, for example, that has recently become salient in both the United States and Europe is illegal immigration. Consider two people sitting around discussing current affairs. One person mentions illegal immigration. The other person states that immigration is becoming a problem, but there are other things the government should worry about first. After a few minutes of thought, the gentleman that stated the government should worry about other things first blurts out that illegal immigration will be the …

Spatial And Seasonal Variations In The Pelagic–Benthic Coupling Of The Southeastern Beaufort Sea Revealed By Sedimentary Biomarkers, Nathalie Morata, Paul E. Renaud, Sonia Brugel, Keith A. Hobson, Beverly J. Johnson Jan 2008

Johnson

All Faculty Scholarship

Photosynthetic pigments and stable isotopes from suspended particulate organic matter (POM) and surface sediment of the southeast Beaufort Sea, including the Mackenzie shelf and the Amundsen Gulf, were studied during fall 2003 and summer 2004. This multiple-biomarker approach led to an increased understanding of spatial and seasonal variation in pelagic–benthic coupling, as these 2 biomarkers reflect inherent differences in the time scales over which they integrate. Sedimentary pigments highlighted the importance of local water-column production as a source of phytodetrital inputs to the sea floor. In the summer, the dominance of diatoms in the water column was reflected in the …

A Review Of Barriers To Biofuel Market Development In The United States, Karl R. Rábago Jan 2008

A Review Of Barriers To Biofuel Market Development In The United States, Karl R. Rábago

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In recent years, biofuel markets have begun a resurgence. At one time, biofuels were the only way humanity obtained useful energy, but they were almost totally displaced by fossil fuels during the last century. Now, due to a range of drivers, they have begun a small but seemingly solid comeback. This Article reviews the remaining barriers to full commercial success for biofuels in the United States with an emphasis on transportation fuels. While recent success has been impressive, markets for transportation biofuels are hardly “self-sustaining” in the purest sense of the concept. The author does not seek to disparage the …

Family Context Of Children And Youths Experiencing Online Interpersonal Victimization, Brian Michael Hinchee Jan 2008

Family Context Of Children And Youths Experiencing Online Interpersonal Victimization, Brian Michael Hinchee

Master's Theses and Capstones

Internet victimization of children is a recent phenomenon that is now widely studied. The various predictors of Internet victimization have received less attention. My study measures Online Interpersonal Victimization, which includes harassment and sexual solicitations. I analyze victimization using the Family Context model and Routine Activities and Lifestyles Theory to examine how relationships with parents contribute to youth victimization.

This study uses 2005 data from the Youth Internet Safety Survey (YISS2), a nationally representative sample of youth Internet users and their parents. Survey participants (N=1500) were regular Internet users between the ages of 10 and 17. It was hypothesized that …

Climate Change Policy: Why Germany Leads And The United States Lags, Kristin Kesling Jan 2008

Climate Change Policy: Why Germany Leads And The United States Lags, Kristin Kesling

Master's Theses and Capstones

Why is climate change a top priority on the political agenda in Germany and not a top priority on the political agenda in the United States? This study seeks to answer this question by examining the evolution of climate change policy in both countries. Analyzing Germany's and America's environmental movement, the thesis points to several theories which include the European Union and cultural values. However, it is the nations' political structures/institutions and their post WWII foreign policy views that most determine where climate change policy stands on each country's political agenda. The analysis concludes with a possible outlook on America's …

Recovery Policy, The Endangered Species Act And The Yellowstone Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctos Horribilis): A Case Study Analysis Of The Role And Function Of Environmental Organizations, Rachel A. Platt Jan 2008

Recovery Policy, The Endangered Species Act And The Yellowstone Grizzly Bear (Ursus Arctos Horribilis): A Case Study Analysis Of The Role And Function Of Environmental Organizations, Rachel A. Platt

Master's Theses and Capstones

This Thesis explores the question, "what are the politics of de-listing an endangered species?" The Yellowstone grizzly de-listing process offered environmental organizations a platform to provide the general public with a genuine opportunity to engage with the comments and positions, to the federal government. It contends that a symbolic consensus has been constructed about the American West, Yellowstone National Park and the grizzly bear and these constructed were strong enough to generate the majority of edited responses to the Fish and Wildlife Service during the de-listing process. This thesis looks at the manner in which environmental organizations employ this natural …

Role Stress, Role Resources, And Mental Health Outcomes Among Recreational Runners, Leslie Dillon Jan 2008

Role Stress, Role Resources, And Mental Health Outcomes Among Recreational Runners, Leslie Dillon

Master's Theses and Capstones

Research on the impact of multiple role management on mental health outcomes has yet to consider the implications of a recreational athlete role. Role Conflict theory predicts that incorporating this additional role would increase potential for stress manifested as a mental health problem. Role Expansion theory predicts the social qualities of this additional role can be helpful in buffering against stress. In an exploratory study, a sample of recreational runners from New England were recruited by email to complete an online survey that evaluated role resources, role stress, depression, and alcohol problems. Results show no significant relationships between role stress, …

Evaluating The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative Within And Across The New England Region, Jessica A. Parent Jan 2008

Evaluating The Serious And Violent Offender Reentry Initiative Within And Across The New England Region, Jessica A. Parent

Master's Theses and Capstones

The reentry of inmates back into the community is a hotly debated topic in society today. A descriptive study was conducted to analyze what mental health services were being provided to inmates who were participants in the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative (SVORI). Additionally, barriers to implementing comprehensive mental health services, along with trends within and across the New England Region regarding mental health services were examined. The data collected was from three program evaluation surveys completed by Project Directors for SVORI in 2003, 2005, and 2006. The results indicate that the mental health services provided to SVORI participants …
