Purdue Methods for Rice Growth
This document is one entry in a series of questions and answers originally posted to the Purdue University Department of Horticulture & Landscape Architecture’s Plant Growth Facility Web site [http://www.hort.purdue.edu/hort/facilities/greenhouse/RiceMethod.shtml] regarding best practices for rice plant growth in a greenhouse. Controlled studies were conducted with the goals of optimizing growth and yield; developing standardized methodology using readily available commercial materials; and providing recommendations for large-scale high-throughput production. Digital images showing treatment differences are included. A summary of recommendations; materials and methods description; and a reference list are available in separate documents.

The Grothendieck Property For Injective Tensor Products, Qingying Bu
The Grothendieck Property For Injective Tensor Products, Qingying Bu
Analysis Seminar
Let ⊗ denote the injective tensor product of Banach spaces and . (a) Suppose that either or has the Radon-Nikodym property and that either ** or ** has the approximation property. If both and have the Grothendieck property and each continuous linear operator from * to ** is compact, then ⊗ has the Grothendieck property. (b) Suppose that is a reflexive space with an unconditional finite-dimensional decomposition and has the Grothendieck property. Then ⊗ has the Grothendieck property if and only if each continuous linear operator from …

Hydrophobic Silver Nanoparticles Trapped In Lipid Bilayers: Size Distribution, Bilayer Phase Behavior, And Optical Properties, Geoffrey D. Bothun
Hydrophobic Silver Nanoparticles Trapped In Lipid Bilayers: Size Distribution, Bilayer Phase Behavior, And Optical Properties, Geoffrey D. Bothun
Chemical, Biomolecular, and Materials Engineering Faculty Publications
Background: Lipid-based dispersion of nanoparticles provides a biologically inspired route to designing therapeutic agents and a means of reducing nanoparticle toxicity. Little is currently known on how the presence of nanoparticles influences lipid vesicle stability and bilayer phase behavior. In this work, the formation of aqueous lipid/nanoparticle assemblies (LNAs) consisting of hydrophobic silver-decanethiol particles (5.7 ± 1.8 nm) embedded within 1,2-dipalmitoyl-sn-glycero-3- phosphocholine (DPPC) bilayers is demonstrated as a function of the DPPC/Ag nanoparticle (AgNP) ratio. The effect of nanoparticle loading on the size distribution, bilayer phase behavior, and bilayer fluidity is determined. Concomitantly, the effect of bilayer incorporation on …

A Transnational Study: Young Adult Literature Exchanged Between The Us And Germany, Kristana Miskin
Theses and Dissertations
Both young adult literature and transnational literature occupy transitional spaces and defy simple classifications. Their commonalities naturally suit the two sets of literature for concurrent study. However, the field is underdeveloped, particularly in the United States. With a concentration on the exchanges taking place between the U.S. and Germany, this thesis addresses the need to assemble primary materials and pertinent critical commentary into a single place available to educators, scholars, and researchers to acquire background on transnational YAL themes. The thesis delineates methods used in conducting and compiling research on U.S.-German YAL exchange and highlights the translation and publication concerns …
Moving To The Nebraska Panhandle: A Broad Picture Of The Decision Process, Charlotte Narjes
Moving To The Nebraska Panhandle: A Broad Picture Of The Decision Process, Charlotte Narjes
Cornhusker Economics
New residents to the Nebraska Panhandle compared and researched rural communities before making their decision to move. This was one of the themes that emerged in a qualitative study conducted by the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, funded by the United States Department of Agriculture CSREES National Research Initiative Grant program. The new movers not only compared communities, but they had choices, as one individual stated, “We spent about six months looking at different communities … we developed a formula … 50 percent job … 25 percent community, 25 percent school.”
Thirteen questions were asked to 78 new residents that participated in …

Washington Pension System Review, Peter S. Barth, Heather Grob, Henry George Harder, H. Allan Hunt, Michael Silverstein
Upjohn Institute Technical Reports
The purpose of this study is to analyze the incidence of Total Permanent Disability (TPD) pensions in Washington State's workers' compensation program. Concerns exist at both the legislature and in the Department of Labor and Industries as there appears to have been a sharp upturn in the number of pensions awarded since late in the 1990s. This report examines the factors that may be causally related to any upsurge in such awards. Our task is to evaluate pension incidence for both the state fund and the self-insured populations, with a view towards identifying causes of the trend in both sectors, …

Antiphase Ordering And Surface Phases In Lithium Aluminate, Richard R. Vanfleet, J. A. Simmons, D. W. Hill, M. M. C. Chou, B. H. Chai

Antiphase domains are seen in single crystal gamma lithium aluminate (gamma-LiAlO2) with 16.7 nm periodicity in the <110> direction. Alternate domains have a (1/2) [001] shift. Beta phase lithium aluminate (beta-LiAlO2) is seen to form on the surface of the as-received wafers with an epitaxial strain limited relationship with the bulk gamma phase. The orthorhombic beta phase aligns with the a and b axes (0.528 and 0.630 nm) matching with the tetragonal gamma phase's a and c axes (0.5168 and 0.6268 nm). The gamma and beta phases are seen to have different etch rates. The beta phase converts back to the …110>

Ocean Literacy And Reasoning About Ocean Issues: The Influence Of Content, Experience And Morality, Teresa Greely
Ocean Literacy And Reasoning About Ocean Issues: The Influence Of Content, Experience And Morality, Teresa Greely
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Ocean issues with conceptual ties to science and a global society have captured the attention, imagination, and concern of an international audience. Climate change, over fishing, marine pollution, freshwater shortages and alternative energy sources are a few ocean issues highlighted in our media and casual conversations. From the life-giving rain that nourishes crops and our bodies, to life-saving medicines; from the fish that come from the ocean, to the goods that are transported on the sea's surface-the ocean plays a role in our life in some way every day (NOAA, 1998). However, a disconnect exists between what scientists know and …
