Cultivating Innovation: The Role Of Mentoring In The Innovation Process, Susan Wills Amat

Open Access Dissertations

Organizations are seeking ways to become more innovative as a response to increased global competitiveness. While innovation is clearly important, many strategies have been attempted with this goal but no clear method has proved successful. This study shows that firms who are considered to have innovation as one of their core competencies utilize mentoring to facilitate and cultivate innovation. Utilizing a qualitative, case study approach, interviews were conducted with key stakeholders at four major U.S. companies considered to be among the most innovative in the world. Optimal Cutpoint Estimation With Censored Data, Mithat Gonen, Camelia Sima

We consider the problem of selecting an optimal cutpoint for a continuous marker when the outcome of interest is subject to right censoring. Maximal chi square methods and receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves-based methods are commonly-used when the outcome is binary. In this article we show that selecting the cutpoint that maximizes the concordance, a metric similar to the area under an ROC curve, is equivalent to maximizing the Youden index, a popular criterion when the ROC curve is used to choose a threshold. The Need for Extended Time Off (EXTO):

  1. New children: More women and mothers are working, and there is an increase in the number of couples with children in which both parents work.
  2. Health issues: According to a 2000 survey of employees regarding the Family & Medical Leave Act (FMLA), among those who took FMLA leave, more than half, 52.4%, of workers used the leave to attend to their own health conditions. Thirteen percent reported taking leave to care for a parent and nearly 12% reported using leave to care for an ill child.
