Alkoxyamine Polymers: Versatile Materials For Surface Ligation Applications, Lindsey Hines, Jessica Moore, David Dahl, Belinda Lady, Johnathan Brantley, Hasan Palandoken
Chemistry and Biochemistry
Immobilization of biomolecules (i.e., proteins, carbohydrates), on polymeric surfaces has been an area of intense research. The resultant bioconjugates often display increased stability, bioavailability and activity. Our research program seeks to explore the utility of the alkoxyamine (RONH2) functional group in new materials as versatile ligating sites for the immobilization of various compounds.
The ease with which alkoxyamines (RONH2) condense with aldehydes or ketones has prompted their widespread use in labelling liposome, bacterial and mammalian cell surfaces as well as chemoselectively ligating small molecule ‘recognition elements' onto polyfunctional substrates. These condensation reactions proceed in aqueous media to afford the robust …

Cariporide Prodrugs: Targeting Brain Cancer Cells Through Sodium-Proton Exchange Inhibition, Jacob Vervynckt, Johnathan Brantley, Jessica Moore, Mark Graves Ii, William Harley, Fredric A. Gorin, Hasan Palandoken
Chemistry and Biochemistry
More than 200,000 people in the United States are diagnosed with a primary or metastatic brain tumor annually. The life expectancy for these individuals is approximately 9-12 months from the time of diagnosis. This poor prognosis is due to the ineffectiveness of existing therapies (i.e., chemotherapy and radiotherapy) against brain cancer, where the primary problem is the inability to differentiate cancer cells from healthy brain cells.
Relative to healthy brain tissue, the heightened metabolism of cancer cells increases their reliance on the ion transport proteins NHE (sodium-proton exchanger) and NCX (sodium-calcium exchanger). Inhibition of these proteins disrupts the intricate pH …

The aerobic oxidation of 5-hydroxy pentenes to trans-tetrahydrofurans (THFs), the Mukaiyama oxidation, has in recent years emerged as a powerful tool in synthetic chemistry. In this report we describe the first crystal structures of 2,4-dioxo-alkanoic acid dialkylamide complexes for both Co(II) and Co(III) salts. The Co(II) structures show an unprecedented arrangement of atoms, with a central Co(II)(H2O)6 flanked by two Co(II) atoms each coordinated with three anionic chelating ligands. The dimeric Co(III) structures show two anionic chelating ligands and bridging hydroxyl groups.
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For Teaching Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Learners In Rural Eastern North Carolina, Debra D. O'Neal, Marjorie Ringler, Diane Rodriguez
Teachers’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For Teaching Linguistically And Culturally Diverse Learners In Rural Eastern North Carolina, Debra D. O'Neal, Marjorie Ringler, Diane Rodriguez
The Rural Educator
The number of English language learners (ELL) students in the US is increasing dramatically. The growth is even more evident in rural areas of the United States such as North Carolina where teachers are facing classrooms with a majority of second language learners. The authors conducted a study interviewing 24 teachers at a rural elementary school in eastern North Carolina. Teachers were interviewed regarding their perceptions of their preparedness to teach English language learners in the mainstream classrooms. Findings revealed that teacher training programs have not prepared these individuals for the student population they face today regardless of the year …

Factors Associated With The Personal Assessment Of College Among American Indian Students At A Rural University, Terry Huffman
The Rural Educator
This study examines the relationship between four independent variables (gender, age, reservation background, and cultural traditionalism) with three dependent variables (assessment of college, transition to college, and impact of college on an appreciation of Native heritage) among a sample of American Indian students attending a small, rural university. Findings include no significant relationships between any of the independent variables and the assessment of college. However, the transition to college is associated with age, reservation background, and cultural traditionalism while the impact of college on an appreciation of Native heritage is related to cultural traditionalism.

Weighing In: Rural Iowa Principals’ Perceptions Of State-Mandated Teaching Evaluation Standards, Terri A. Lasswell, Nicholas J. Pace, Gregory A. Reed
The Rural Educator
As the accountability movement has gained momentum, policy makers and educators have strived to strike a difficult balance between the sometimes competing demands at the local, state, and federal levels. Efforts to improve accountability and teacher evaluation have taken an especially unique route in Iowa, where local control and resistance to state mandated curricular standards have been popular topics from the statehouse to the convenience store. This research explores principals’ impressions of Iowa’s state-mandated standards for best-practice teaching (as opposed to state mandated curricular standards). Further, the research examined the extent to which the Iowa Teaching Standards (ITS) and accompanying …
Considering Student Writing From The Perspective Of Parents In One Rural Elementary School, Kathy Brashears
Considering Student Writing From The Perspective Of Parents In One Rural Elementary School, Kathy Brashears
The Rural Educator
This article explores the perspective of parents regarding their elementary children’s writing in one rural, elementary school. During the research, thematic strands emerged indicating that parents may value their children’s writing for purposes that differ from the purposes deemed appropriate by the school. Upon interviewing 30 parents/guardians, the following codes materialized identifying elements that contribute to the parents’ perspectives. These elements include the following: Parents do not see the connection between school and real world writing, parents lack understanding on writing purposes, parents’ perceptions of writing are based on their own school experiences, and some parents are illiterate. Not only …
The Effect Of Knowledge And Attitudes Of Emergency Contraception On Its Use In Undergraduate Students, Amanda Marie Waldrup
The Effect Of Knowledge And Attitudes Of Emergency Contraception On Its Use In Undergraduate Students, Amanda Marie Waldrup
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
A web-based cross sectional analysis utilizing the Spearman Coefficient was used to examine the relationship between 341 college students’ knowledge and attitudes toward emergency contraception. Personal characteristics and background factors such as age, race, gender, past and current use of contraception, past unintended pregnancies, and type of sex education in high school were compared to current knowledge levels and attitudes as related to use among college students. Results indicated that general knowledge is high, but detailed knowledge is lacking. Confusion between emergency contraception and RU-486 exist, which could lead to concerned attitudes ultimately effecting use. Most high schools that offer …

On The Jump Behavior Of Distributions And Logarithmic Averages, Jasson Vindas, Ricardo Estrada
On The Jump Behavior Of Distributions And Logarithmic Averages, Jasson Vindas, Ricardo Estrada
Faculty Publications
The jump behavior and symmetric jump behavior of distributions are studied. We give several formulas for the jump of distributions in terms of logarithmic averages, this is done in terms of Cesàro-logarithmic means of decompositions of the Fourier transform and in terms of logarithmic radial and angular local asymptotic behaviors of harmonic conjugate functions. Application to Fourier series are analyzed. In particular, we give formulas for jumps of periodic distributions in terms of Cesàro-Riesz logarithmic means and Abel-Poisson logarithmic means of conjugate Fourier series. © 2008 Elsevier Inc. Micromechanics Model Based On The Nanostructure Of Pfsa Membranes, Ahmet Kusoglu, Michael H. Santare, Anette M. Karlsson, William B. Johnson, Simon Cleghorn
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
A micromechanics model is developed to predict Young’s modulus of perfluorosulfonic acid (PFSA) membranes at various temperatures and water contents. The morphology of PFSA membranes is characterized by a two-phase structure, where hydrophilic clusters expand to hold water molecules during swelling, whereas the hydrophobic polymer network maintains the structural stability. A representative volume element (RVE) is proposed based on the descriptions for the nanostructure of PFSA membranes available in the literature. On the basis of mechanics model, we estimate Young’s modulus in tension of PFSA membranes as a function of water volume fraction for various temperatures. The results show that …
