Unl Libraries Liaison Program, Elaine L. Westbrooks

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Presentations

My Framework
• The purpose of the library has not changed-- our role has
• Liaison librarians play a central role in representing the library
• Librarian’s Roles are changing and expanding
• Support and engagement of academic units is critical
• We must expect ongoing demands to acquire, organize, and provide access to locally held resources
• Research universities are under fire
• Our users prefer convenience over quality
• The library has become a virtual destination
• It is our responsibility to ask “What is the future of the academic library?” and “How can they be transformed in …

Argument Structure Effects In Action Verb Naming In Static And Dynamic Conditions, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Steve Fix, Todd B. Parrish, Cynthia K. Thompson Nov 2008

Argument Structure Effects In Action Verb Naming In Static And Dynamic Conditions, Dirk B. Den Ouden, Steve Fix, Todd B. Parrish, Cynthia K. Thompson

Communication Sciences and Disorders Faculty Articles and Research

Argument structure, as in the participant roles entailed within the lexical representation of verbs, affects verb processing. Recent neuroimaging studies show that when verbs are heard or read, the posterior temporoparietal region shows increased activation for verbs with greater versus lesser argument structure complexity, usually bilaterally. In addition, patients with agrammatic aphasia show verb production deficits, graded based on argument structure complexity. In the present study, we used fMRI to examine the neural correlates of verb production in overt action naming conditions. In addition, we tested the differential effects of naming when verbs were presented dynamically in video segments versus …

A Computer-Based Economic Analysis For Manufacturing Process Selection, Manocher Djassemi Nov 2008

A Computer-Based Economic Analysis For Manufacturing Process Selection, Manocher Djassemi

Industrial Technology and Packaging

An important part of financial planning in product development is considering whether the capital expenditures meet volume and cost goals. A good business plan should provide investors with the implications of process selection on the company's bottom line. It is estimated that there are least 1000 manufacturing processes and sub-processes. Considering the number of process choices and quantity of cost data, an economic analysis for process selection may pose a challenge for decision makers. This paper provides an insight to Ashby’s cost modeling method for generating an estimate of unit product cost. The cost model provides a broad indicator for …

Autoethnography As A Never-Ending Story: A Review Of Guyana Diaries: Women’S Lives Across Difference, Laurie L. Charles

The Qualitative Report

The proliferation of autoethnographies offers scholars and writers multiple opportunities to consider the various methods of authorial positioning in qualitative research inquiry. In this article, I review Guyana Diaries: Women's Lives across Difference, by Kimberly D. Nettles, while reflecting my own choices as an autoethnographic author. Autoethnographic writing is presented as a 'never-ending story,' which may have lasting, transformative effects on those who produce it

A Group-Based Approach To Examining The Association Among Risky Sexual Behavior, Drug Use, And Criminal Involvement In A Sample Of Newly Arrested Juvenile Offenders, Kristina K. Childs

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study focuses on the interrelationships between risky sexual practices, substance use, and arrest history. The sample consists of 948 newly arrested juvenile offenders processed at a centralized intake facility in 2006. A series of confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling techniques are used to 1) determine if risky sexual behavior, marijuana and cocaine use, and arrest history form a unidimensional latent factor, 2) examine the direct effect of age on the latent factor, and 3) compare the factor structure, as well as the effect of age on the latent factor, across four demographic subgroups based on race and …

Phase Separation Induced Polar Electrooptical Effect In A Doped Nematic Liquid Crystal Cell, Ji-Hoon Lee, Daeseung Kang, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt Nov 2008

Phase Separation Induced Polar Electrooptical Effect In A Doped Nematic Liquid Crystal Cell, Ji-Hoon Lee, Daeseung Kang, Rolfe G. Petschek, Charles Rosenblatt

Faculty Scholarship

A cell prepared for vertical alignment was filled with a mixture of the liquid crystal octylcyano biphenyl, doped with a three-legged molecule, in the isotropic phase in the presence of an imposed temperature gradient perpendicular to the substrates. After cooling the cell through the nematic phase and restoring the temperature uniformity, an electrooptic response was observed on applying an electric field across the cell in one direction but not in the other. This unipolar effect was absent for cells prepared in the absence of a temperature gradient. The results are discussed in terms of phase separation and preferential adsorption of …

Multi-Level Regulation Of Argininosuccinate Synthase: Significance For Endothelial Nitric Oxide Production, Karen Davidowitz Corbin Nov 2008

Multi-Level Regulation Of Argininosuccinate Synthase: Significance For Endothelial Nitric Oxide Production, Karen Davidowitz Corbin

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The citrulline-nitric oxide (NO) cycle, comprised of the enzymes argininosuccinate synthase (AS), argininosuccinate lyase (AL) and endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), is responsible for the regulated production of endothelial NO. Although most studies have focused on eNOS to uncover important regulatory mechanisms, we and others have determined that AS is an essential and regulated step in endothelial NO production. AS is rate limiting for endothelial NO production and is the primary source of arginine, the substrate for eNOS-mediated NO production, despite saturating intracellular levels of arginine and available arginine transport systems. AS is essential for endothelial cell viability and its …

From Cancer To Sexually Transmitted Infection: Explorations Of Social Stigma Among Cervical Cancer Survivors, Karen E. Dyer Nov 2008

From Cancer To Sexually Transmitted Infection: Explorations Of Social Stigma Among Cervical Cancer Survivors, Karen E. Dyer

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research project aims to examine the idea of stigma attached to cervical cancer in light of its association with HPV, a sexually transmitted infection (STI). The public recognition of this relationship appears to be increasing due to the current media attention surrounding HPV's causative role in the development of cervical cancer, and the newly-released HPV vaccine. Thus, this study explores the experiences and perceptions of cervical cancer patients and survivors living with this disease at a moment in time when it is becoming a very visible manifestation of a sexually transmitted infection, versus one identified historically as a life-threatening …
