Early Maladaptive Schemas, Attachment, Negative Affect And Relationship Satisfaction, Nicole Mcdermott Nov 2008

Early Maladaptive Schemas, Attachment, Negative Affect And Relationship Satisfaction, Nicole Mcdermott

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines early maladaptive schemas (EMSs), attachment styles, depression and anxiety, and relationship satisfaction. A sample of 47 (61.7% females, 38.3% males) college students who were in a current relationship completed standardized measures for each study variable. As predicted, depression and EMSs were related to decreased relationship satisfaction. Unexpectedly, attachment styles were under-represented and therefore could not be examined in the study. Contrary to hypotheses, anxiety and relationship satisfaction were not significantly related to one another.

Corrosion Damage Studies Through Microscopy And Stress Analysis, Ronak Patel Nov 2008

Corrosion Damage Studies Through Microscopy And Stress Analysis, Ronak Patel

Theses and Dissertations

Corrosion is the destructive result of chemical reaction between a metal or metal alloy and its environment. Airplanes, power generating plants, chemical process and manufacturing plants, concrete structure, and many others which widely uses aluminum alloy and stainless steel alloys are subjected to corrosion. The estimated cost of corrosion damage is in order of 3 to 5 percent of gross national product (GNP). Out of all forms of corrosion, pitting corrosion is most commonly observed in aluminum alloy 2024 and stainless steel type 316. There is a need to study the stress environment around the pits in order to predict …

Modular, Distributed Spatial Metadata Repository On The Services Principle, Christopher C. Miller

GIS Day

Despite major improvements in GIS technologies in recent years, it remains particularly difficult to efficiently locate geospatial data. Purdue Libraries, in keeping with their efforts to build a distributed, cross-discipline data repository, is nearing an alpha release of a metadata portal through which large amounts of base data as well as Purdue-produced geospatial data can be located, downloaded or connected to. GIS Librarian Miller will discuss the project and how it might interact with existing campus systems.

Using Virtual Machines To Prototype Mapping Applications, Larry Theller Nov 2008

Using Virtual Machines To Prototype Mapping Applications, Larry Theller

GIS Day

We have recently started using the virtual machine technology to speed up our development of online maps, based on ArcIMS or Google Maps -- and various databases. These are developed in our department on a virtual or physical server, and then the image of the machine is loaded on the Agriculture Information Technology groups virtualized cluster. It is successful in that the hardware costs of setting up servers are eliminated, management is available 24/7, security is handled by professionals, and performance is quite good. I will display the steps in the process of virtualizing, which are not difficult.

The study found that first year teachers valued and expected, but did not …

The Impact, On Equity, Of Raising The Equalization Factor In The North Dakota Foundation Aid Formula, Michael A. Bitz Nov 2008

The Impact, On Equity, Of Raising The Equalization Factor In The North Dakota Foundation Aid Formula, Michael A. Bitz

Theses and Dissertations

From 1973-2006, the North Dakota Legislative Assembly had been trying to achieve equity in the school foundation aid formula by multiplying an equalization factor times the taxable valuation in each local school district and then withholding this amount from the school district's entitlement. The money recaptured by the state as a result of the equalization factor was then used to increase the per pupil payment. Since its inception in 1973, the equalization factor rose from 21 mills to its high level of 41 mills in 2006. The perception was that every time the equalization factor was increased, the state foundation …

The Design And Synthesis Of Zinc(Ii) Ion Fluorescence Sensors, Julius Ngunde Ngwendson Nov 2008

The Design And Synthesis Of Zinc(Ii) Ion Fluorescence Sensors, Julius Ngunde Ngwendson

Theses and Dissertations

This work is a study of a new class of aromatic amines as fluorescent zinc sensors. N-(Carboxymethyl)-N-[3-[(carboxymethyl)amino]-2-methoxy-5-methylphenyl]glycinate exhibits more than 20-fold fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Zn(II) ions when excited at 300 nm. This compound shows a fluorescence emission at 390 nm, which in the presence of Zn(II) ion exhibits a 20 nm emission blue shift. The tetraacetate version, potassium N,N'-(2-methoxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bis[ N-(carboxymethyl)]glycinate, exhibits a 7-fold sensitivity to Zn(II) ion, and there is no emission band shift observed. Investigations point to the methoxy group for the ratiometric behavior and increased sensitivity to zinc. The diacetate versions—sodium N-(carboxymethyl)- N-(2-methoxyphenyl)glycinate, sodium N,N'-(2-methoxy-5-methyl-1,3-phenylene)bisglycinate …

Foundational Data Repository For Numeric Engine Validation, Jason Michael Hollingsworth Nov 2008

Foundational Data Repository For Numeric Engine Validation, Jason Michael Hollingsworth

Theses and Dissertations

Many different numeric models have been created to address a variety of hydraulic and hydrologic engineering applications. Each utilizes formulations and numeric methods to represent processes such as contaminant transport, coastal circulation, and watershed runoff. Although one process may be adequately represented by a model, this does not guarantee that another process will be represented even if that process is similar. For example, a model that computes subcritical flow does not necessarily compute supercritical flow. Selecting an appropriate numeric model for a situation is a prerequisite to obtaining accurate results. Current policies and resources do not provide adequate guidance in …

Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph A. Saxton, Feride Tiğlay Nov 2008

Global Existence Of Some Infinite Energy Solutions For A Perfect Incompressible Fluid, Ralph A. Saxton, Feride Tiğlay

Mathematics Faculty Publications

This paper provides results on local and global existence for a class of solutions to the Euler equations for an incompressible, inviscid fluid. By considering a class of solutions which exhibits a characteristic growth at infinity we obtain an initial value problem for a nonlocal equation. We establish local well-posedness in all dimensions and persistence in time of these solutions for three and higher dimensions. We also examine a weaker class of global solutions.

Pfisr Nightside Observations Of Naturally Enhanced Ion Acoustic Lines, And Their Relation To Boundary Auroral Features, R. G. Michell, K. A. Lynch, C. J. Heinselman, H. C. Stenbaek-Nielsen

Dartmouth Scholarship

We present results from a coordinated camera and radar study of the auroral ionosphere conducted during March of 2006 from Poker Flat, Alaska. The campaign was conducted to coincide with engineering tests of the first quarter installation of the Poker Flat Incoherent Scatter Radar (PFISR). On 31 March 2006, a moderately intense auroral arc, (~10 kR at 557.7 nm), was located in the local magnetic zenith at Poker Flat. During this event the radar observed 7 distinct periods of abnormally large backscattered power from the F-region. These were only observed in the field-aligned radar beam, and radar spectra from these …

The Effects Of Experience On The Perception Of German Rounded Vowels By Native Speakers Of American English, Bradley J. York Nov 2008

The Effects Of Experience On The Perception Of German Rounded Vowels By Native Speakers Of American English, Bradley J. York

Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the effects of experience in German on the categorical perception of German rounded vowels, namely /uː/, /ʊ/, /oː/, /ɔ/, /yː/, /ʏ/, /øː/, and /œ/, by native speakers of American English (AE). Of special interest is whether more experience in German leads to more accurate perception of German front rounded vowels, namely /yː/, /ʏ/, /øː/, and /œ/, which do not have correlates in American English and are well known to cause perceptual problems for native AE speakers (Strange, Bohn, Trent, & Nishi, 2004). Subjects in this study were students at Brigham Young University that were divided into 4 …
