A See-Ability Metric To Improve Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator Awareness Using Video Georegistered To Terrain Models, Cameron Howard Engh Nov 2008

A See-Ability Metric To Improve Mini Unmanned Aerial Vehicle Operator Awareness Using Video Georegistered To Terrain Models, Cameron Howard Engh

Theses and Dissertations

Search and rescue operations conducted in wilderness environments can be greatly aided by the use of video filmed from mini-UAVs. While lightweight, inexpensive and easily transportable, these small aircraft suffer from wind buffeting and may produce video that is difficult to search. To aid in the video search process, we have created a system to project video frames into a 3D representation of the search region. This projection allows us to tie each frame of video to a real-world location, enabling a myriad of novel views, mosaics and metrics that can be used to guide the search including a new …

Benthic Microalgae And Nutrient Flux In Florida Bay, Usa, Merrie Beth Neely Nov 2008

Benthic Microalgae And Nutrient Flux In Florida Bay, Usa, Merrie Beth Neely

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this study was to address the relationship between benthic microalgal communities and the phosphate nutrient dynamics of Florida Bay sediments and how they relate to benthic and water column primary production. In situ phosphate (P) flux between the sediment and the water column was measured in three regions of Florida Bay. Differences in the ratio of inorganic to organic phosphate flux were found between the three regions in relation to the amount of phosphate measured in the water column. Based upon the average sediment flux in my study, more than 1600 metric tons of P would be …

Reside…Commute…Visit... Reintegrating Defined Communal Place Amongst Those Who Engage With Tampa’S Built Environment, Matthew D. Suarez

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The phenomenon of place has always been a key issue of inquiry throughout theoretical discourse in relation to architecture and urban planning. To comprehend such a phenomenon, one must begin to understand how to concretize the factors that can be used to create such a meaningful environment. With respect to such a topic, what becomes of interest are the four primary elements that come together to illustrate how the structure and spirit of place are defined. Space, character, orientation, and identification are the elements that begin to provide such a definition.

Ever since the end of the Second World War, …

Catch That Pepsi Spirit Nov 2008

Catch That Pepsi Spirit

China Beat Blog: Archive 2008-2012

This interview was conducted over email between Kelly Hammond and Micki McCoy in parallel with McCoy’s article in Yishu: Journal of Contemporary Chinese Art(forthcoming January/February 2009) on the depiction of ethnic minorities in propaganda posters in the People’s Republic of China made prior to the Opening and Reform. The posters can be seen as historical predecessors for contemporary official depictions of ethnic diversity such as that seen at the 2008 Olympics Opening Ceremonies. Yet this imagery is distinct from current commercial visualizations of ethnicity and nationality in the PRC, as described in the interview below regarding Hammond’s participation in a …

Benchmarking Corn Water Productivity In Nebraska Irrigated Cropping Systems, Kenneth Cassman Nov 2008

Benchmarking Corn Water Productivity In Nebraska Irrigated Cropping Systems, Kenneth Cassman

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: White Papers and Presentations

Improving corn water productivity is the key to meet the challenge of ever tightening water resources for irrigation and greater demands for food, feed and fuel. Corn grain yield per unit of water supply must therefore be increased dramatically in Nebraska and globally. In Nebraska, ≈80% of the irrigated land is for corn production. At present, there is a substantial exploitable gap between actual farm yields and attainable yields. This reflects, in part, inefficient use of water supply, and/or other non‐water related yield constraints. Boundary functions define the relationship of yield with water supply and are used to benchmark crop …

Improving The Efficiency Of Water And Energy Use In Nebraska’S Irrigation Soybean Production Systems, James Specht Nov 2008

Improving The Efficiency Of Water And Energy Use In Nebraska’S Irrigation Soybean Production Systems, James Specht

Nebraska Center for Energy Sciences Research: White Papers and Presentations

The use of irrigation in Nebraska’s soybean production systems has steadily increased to the extent that irrigated soybean acreage in recent years has accounts for about 45% of State total soybean acreage. Technological advances in irrigation equipment can greatly improve on‐farm water application efficiencies (with respect to both energy and water). However, producer adoption of these advances is very slow because of the capital expenditures required for irrigation system upgrades. An alternative approach is greater producer adoption and use of irrigation water management strategies that ensure that water is scheduled and applied in a just‐in‐time fashion, which also optimizes water …
