Does The Addition Of A Duration Improve The Liso-E Peak Relation For Gamma-Ray Bursts?, Andrew C. Collazzi, Bradley E. Schaefer Nov 2008

Does The Addition Of A Duration Improve The Liso-E Peak Relation For Gamma-Ray Bursts?, Andrew C. Collazzi, Bradley E. Schaefer

Faculty Publications

Firmani et al. proposed a new gamma ray burst (GRB) luminosity relation that showed a significant improvement over the Liso-Epeak relation (where Liso is the isotropic peak luminosity and E peak is the photon energy of the spectral peak for the burst). The new proposed relation simply modifies the Epeak value by multiplying it by a power of T0.45, where T0.45 is a particular measure of the GRB duration. We begin by reproducing the results of Firmani for his 19 bursts. We then test the Firmani relation for the same 19 bursts, except that we use independently measured values for …

Temperature Dependence Of The Training Effect In Exchange Coupled Ferromagnetic Bilayers, Christian Binek, Srinivas Polisetty, Sarbeswar Sahoo Nov 2008

Temperature Dependence Of The Training Effect In Exchange Coupled Ferromagnetic Bilayers, Christian Binek, Srinivas Polisetty, Sarbeswar Sahoo

Christian Binek Publications

The temperature dependence of the training effect is studied in an exchange coupled thin-film bilayer composed of a hard ferromagnetic pinning (CoPtCrB) layer in proximity of a soft ferromagnetic pinned (CoCr) layer. Interlayer exchange shifts the hysteresis loops of the soft layer along the magnetic-field axis. This shift is quantified by the bias field in far reaching analogy to the exchange bias field of conventional antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic heterostructures. A ferromagnetic domain state induced in the hard layer experiences aging very similar to the training behavior of the antiferromagnetic domain state in conventional exchange bias systems. Training originates from changes in the …

Detection Of Recurrent Copy Number Alterations In The Genome: A Probabilistic Approach, Oscar M. Rueda, Ramon Diaz-Uriarte Nov 2008

Detection Of Recurrent Copy Number Alterations In The Genome: A Probabilistic Approach, Oscar M. Rueda, Ramon Diaz-Uriarte

COBRA Preprint Series

Copy number variation (CNV) in genomic DNA is linked to a variety of human diseases (including cancer, HIV acquisition, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases), and array-based CGH (aCGH) is currently the main technology to locate CNVs. Several methods can analyze aCGH data at the single sample level, but disease-critical genes are more likely to be found in regions that are common or recurrent among samples. Unfortunately, defining recurrent CNV regions remains a challenge. Moreover, the heterogeneous nature of many diseases requires that we search for CNVs that affect only some subsets of the samples (without prior knowledge of which regions and …

Exploring The Mialome Of Ticks: An Annotated Catalogue Of Midgut Transcripts From The Hard Tick, Dermacentor Variabilis (Acari: Ixodidae), Jennifer M. Anderson, Daniel E. Sonenshine, Jesus G. Valenzuela

Biological Sciences Faculty Publications

Background: Ticks are obligate blood feeders. The midgut is the first major region of the body where blood and microbes ingested with the blood meal come in contact with the tick's internal tissues. Little is known about protein expression in the digestive tract of ticks. In this study, for analysis of global gene expression during tick attachment and feeding, we generated and sequenced 1,679 random transcripts (ESTs) from cDNA libraries from the midguts of female ticks at varying stages of feeding.

Results: Sequence analysis of the 1,679 ESTs resulted in the identification of 835 distinct transcripts, from these, a total …
