Integration-Regulation And Lethal Violence: A Sociological Examination Of The Rural-Urban Suicide Differential In The U.S. Gulf South 1970-2000, Russell R. Davis

Within the sociological literature rates of lethal violence have theoretically andempirically been associated with urban location. In many advanced industrial countries rising rates of rural suicide have resulted in an unprecedented reversal of the rural-urban suicide differential. This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the implications of rural-urban location within contemporary Durkheimian macro social suicide research. Combining county level mortality, demographic, economic, and religious data thisstudy empirically: a) details longitudinal patterns of rural and urban county age-adjusted suicide rates for the Southern Gulf States from 1970-2000; b) standardizes and regresses crude white male suicide rates for rural and …

Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji pengaruh pendekatan Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) dan pelatihan metakognitif terhadap peningkatan kemampuan siswa dan proses memecahkan masalah. Penelitian ekperimen semu ini dengan desain pretes-postes menggunakan kelompok non-ekuivalen, dua kelompok eksperimen dan dua kelompok kontrol. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh siswa kelas IV sekolah dasar di Kabupaten Sleman. Sampel diambil menggunakan teknik sampling tersedia. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tes, angket, wawancara, dan observasi dan dianalisis dengan analisis kovarians. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa kemampuan siswa memecah masalah yang memperoleh pembelajaran matematika dengan pendekatan PMRI dan pelatihan metakognitif lebih unggul dibandingkan dengan pendekatan konvensional, yaitu terdapat perbedaan pengaruh yang signifikan, …

Levamisole, which is the L-isomer of tetramisole, has been used as an antihelminthic agent. Due to its immunomodulating property, it has been used to treat recurrent aphthous ulcers, pemphigus vulgaris, and malignant melanoma. It also has been used along with 5-fluorouracil to treat colon cancer. The side effects are mild and include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and metal taste. However, existing evidence suggests that levamisole can induce multifocal inflammatory leukoencephalopathy. The course of levamisole-induced multifocal inflammatory leukoencephalopathy is monophasic and progressive. Clinical symptoms include gait ataxia, dysarthria, dysphasia, conscious disturbance and weakness of the extremities (from hemiparesis to tetraplegia). The exact …

Background and purpose: Ultrasonography is an accurate and non-invasive imaging tool for assessing a ruptured Achilles tendon. This study attempts to correlate the sonographic appearances of surgically repaired Achilles tendons with their clinical outcomes.Methods: Ten patients (3 men and 7 women) with surgically repaired Achilles tendons were enrolled in this study. All patients had unilateral Achilles tendon ruptures related to sports injuries. All were treated by the same orthopedic surgeon at a University Hospital, from January 1990 to September 2000. Patients had a mean age of 47.2 years (range: 22-66). Mean post-surgical duration was 6.0 years (range: 2.1-12.1). All patients …

The focus of this thesis is the study and recommendation of optimal techniques for developing immersive virtual environments for generic applications. The overarching objective is to ensure that virtual environments can be created and deployed, rapidly and accurately, using commercial off-the-shelf software. Specific subjective and objective criteria have been employed to determine trade-offs between multiple pathways for designing such environments and specific recommendations are made for the applicability of each. As medicinal and technological advances lengthen the average human life span, diseases affecting the elderly such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are seeing increasingly growing numbers, especially in developed countries. As a result, the necessity for an accurate, inexpensive, noninvasive means of diagnosis becomes particularly important, since such a method is not readily available to the general population. One biomarker that has recently showed promise is the analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG).

This article explores the paradoxical figure of the ghost in Robinson Jeffers’ poetry as a means of understanding his complex relationship with human presence in nature. In poems like “Tor House” and “The Place for No Story,” Jeffers’ spectral self-representation embodies both his desire for integration with the natural landscape and his ambivalence about human impacts on the environment. While Jeffers strives for an ecocentric vision that would minimize human presence, his use of the ghost figure reveals the inescapable trace of human consciousness in environmental perception and expression. The New Hampshire Estuaries Project (NHEP) provided a $9,075 grant to Bear-Paw Regional Greenways to support the Isinglass River Conservation Corridor Project. The grant helped fund some of the transaction costs associated with the project that protected high-value conservation land along the Isinglass River and in other areas of the watershed in Strafford, New Hampshire. The $2.9 million project was a collaboration of Bear-Paw, the Trust for Public Land (TPL), and the Town of Strafford that protected five properties and 868 acres of forest, over one mile of road frontage, more than three miles of frontage on streams and rivers …

Nitrogen enrichment is a growing concern for the Great Bay Estuary. For the 2006 State of the Estuaries report (NHEP, 2006), the NHEP calculated the nitrogen load from wastewater treatment facilities (WWTF) using data on total dissolved nitrogen in WWTF effluent in 2002 from Bolster et al. (2003). The NHEP needs to update this indicator for the 2009 State of the Estuaries report. Not only is more recent data needed but also measurements of total nitrogen are needed to avoid assumptions about the ratio of dissolved to total nitrogen. A prototype of a web-based interface for an online database was developed to be used by youth organizations in Dar-es-Salaam. A participatory approach involving secondary students in the identification of user interface requirements, in designing and testing the prototype was used. A questionnaire was designed and manned in seven secondary schools in Dar-es-Salaam to estimate the Internet usage. Interviews were conducted to countercheck the questionnaire responses. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether the differences in nerve conduction, soft tissues, and joint angles of the elbow exist between the bilateral arms of college tennis players and their controls. Sixteen healthy high-ranking tennis players and 15 controls without any history of pain in their upper extremities were recruited. Nerve conduction tests, ultrasonography, and X-ray evaluation were conducted on the elbows bilaterally of the players and controls.Results of the players showed that the sensory amplitudes of the ulnar nerve of the dominant arm were decreased (p=0.003). The nasogastric tube syndrome (NG tube syndrome) is a rare but a potentially life-threatening complication of a patient with indwelling nasogastric tube feeding. The cause of the syndrome is due to the NG tube irritation, resulting in ulceration and infection of the posterior cricoid region with subsequent dysfunction of vocal cord abduction. This dysfunction may result in complete loss of vocal cord abduction and cause serious airway obstruction. Reports of this syndrome are rare in the literature.
