Integration-Regulation And Lethal Violence: A Sociological Examination Of The Rural-Urban Suicide Differential In The U.S. Gulf South 1970-2000, Russell R. Davis

Within the sociological literature rates of lethal violence have theoretically andempirically been associated with urban location. In many advanced industrial countries rising rates of rural suicide have resulted in an unprecedented reversal of the rural-urban suicide differential. This study contributes to the existing literature by examining the implications of rural-urban location within contemporary Durkheimian macro social suicide research. Combining county level mortality, demographic, economic, and religious data thisstudy empirically: a) details longitudinal patterns of rural and urban county age-adjusted suicide rates for the Southern Gulf States from 1970-2000; b) standardizes and regresses crude white male suicide rates for rural and …

Illegal Dumping: Large And Small Scale Littering In Rural Kentucky, Kenneth D. Tunnell

Illegal dumping, a social problem greatly affecting some rural states, occurs at both the large and small scale as open dump sites and roadside trash. Focusing on Kentucky, a rural state without mandatory trash pickup and a per capita income below and a poverty rate above the national average, this photo essay describes the dumping and littering problem. As is shown, legislative and executive initiatives have made some inroads in large-scale clean up. Some local governments, however, appear apathetic about addressing illegal dumping in their own communities. The Game Of Wardens And Poachers, Craig J. Forsyth

This paper is a descriptive analysis of the main aspect of the job of game wardens, the apprehension of poachers. Based on data from interviews with 62 game wardens the author describes the actions of game wardens in attempting to enforce wildlife conservation laws. Extensive quotations from interviews with game wardens are presented. The analysis is focused around their responses to guiding questions regarding the probability of apprehension of poachers. These include: (1) poaching alone, (2) very experienced at poaching, (3) nevertalks about their poaching activities, (4) the use of informants, (5) remaining mobile, (6) being familiar with the geographic …

Theoretical Predictors Of Delinquency In And Out Of School Among A Sample Of Rural Public School Youth, Preston Elrod, Irina R. Soderstrom, David C. May

Journal of Rural Social Sciences

This paper compares predictors of in-school and out-of-school delinquency and is based on data collected from 2,011 subjects at two elementary, one middle, and one high school in a rural school district. Predictors were derived from a variety of theoretical perspectives including social organization and social control; interactionist theory; differential association and social learning; strain, culture conflict, and critical theory. In addition, several demographic variables were included in the analysis. Regression results revealed that negative peer influence, victimization experience, attachment to school, gender, general strain, alienation, and the student’s self-reported response to a weapon at school were significant predictors of …

Prior research has documented a higher rate of violent crime within the South relative to other U.S. regions. Some scholars argue that higher rates of violence in the South are due to the lasting effect of the unique culture of the Scots-Irish immigrants that came into the U.S. in the mid-1700's. Though there is a large body of literature examining the link between culture and violence in the South, an implicit assumption of this line of study is that the cultural effect occurs largely within the white male population in rural Southern areas. Penelitian ini bertujuan menguji pengaruh pendekatan Pendidikan Matematika Realistik Indonesia (PMRI) dan pelatihan metakognitif terhadap peningkatan kemampuan siswa dan proses memecahkan masalah. Penelitian ekperimen semu ini dengan desain pretes-postes menggunakan kelompok non-ekuivalen, dua kelompok eksperimen dan dua kelompok kontrol. Populasi penelitian adalah seluruh siswa kelas IV sekolah dasar di Kabupaten Sleman. Sampel diambil menggunakan teknik sampling tersedia. Data dikumpulkan menggunakan tes, angket, wawancara, dan observasi dan dianalisis dengan analisis kovarians. The prevalence of Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are rising at an alarming rate as the average age of the population increases, especially in developing nations. The efficacy of the new medical treatments critically depends on the ability to diagnose these diseases at the earliest stages. To facilitate the availability of early diagnosis in community hospitals, an accurate, inexpensive, and noninvasive diagnostic tool must be made available. The focus of this thesis is the study and recommendation of optimal techniques for developing immersive virtual environments for generic applications. The overarching objective is to ensure that virtual environments can be created and deployed, rapidly and accurately, using commercial off-the-shelf software. Specific subjective and objective criteria have been employed to determine trade-offs between multiple pathways for designing such environments and specific recommendations are made for the applicability of each. As medicinal and technological advances lengthen the average human life span, diseases affecting the elderly such as Alzheimer's disease and Parkinson's disease are seeing increasingly growing numbers, especially in developed countries. As a result, the necessity for an accurate, inexpensive, noninvasive means of diagnosis becomes particularly important, since such a method is not readily available to the general population. One biomarker that has recently showed promise is the analysis of the electroencephalogram (EEG).

This article explores the paradoxical figure of the ghost in Robinson Jeffers’ poetry as a means of understanding his complex relationship with human presence in nature. In poems like “Tor House” and “The Place for No Story,” Jeffers’ spectral self-representation embodies both his desire for integration with the natural landscape and his ambivalence about human impacts on the environment. While Jeffers strives for an ecocentric vision that would minimize human presence, his use of the ghost figure reveals the inescapable trace of human consciousness in environmental perception and expression.
